As Christmas Eve came and went, hundreds of families and thousands of children prepared to enjoy Christmas because the generosity of the local community made it possible.

The 2025 Toy for Joy drive officially ended with its traditional Dec. 24 deadline. However, contributions sent in just before the deadline and received after Christmas Eve will be applied to the campaign that brings the thrill of Christmas gifts to deserving children in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties.

The contributions of thoughtful individuals, families, groups and organizations were godsends for those children. These donations went directly to making those children happy.

Those who gave should feel proud of their contribution. The deep gratitude from those who spearheaded the drive — and the families who benefited — cannot be measured.

Salvation Army and wrapping up its 103rd year, brings toys, games and books to children whose circumstances would otherwise leave them left out of the holiday happiness enjoyed by others.

Salvation Army Captain Stacy McNeil was in her first year at the Springfield Citadel. McNeil plans to be here for years to come.

She says she was deeply moved by the generosity of the local community, and is already formulating strategies to make next year’s 2026 drive a bountiful success.

Neal, Banko warn legislation will hurt area health care

SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Health CEO Peter Banko and U.S. Rep. Richard Neal sat on either side of a low table in front of about 150 officials, health industry leaders and community organizers. The Dec. 15 panel of two, arranged by the Springfield Regional Chamber, answered questions about what fallout to expect from the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act, also called the OB3 Act, which was passed in July.

As part of the legislation, federal subsidies that lowered premiums on insurance plans obtained through the Affordable Care Act are set to expire. In Massachusetts, the Affordable Care Act marketplace is known as the Health Connector. Democrats pushed to extend the subsidies, and the resulting gridlock is what caused the recent government shutdown. Neal said he had not given up hope on forcing a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on whether to extend the subsidies for two years. Neal said forcing such a vote was “uphill,” but on Dec. 17, four Republicans joined with House Democrats to force the vote. As of press time, the future of the subsidies was uncertain.

Under the OB3 Act, $1 trillion was cut from the federal budget for health care programs.

For Massachusetts, that translates to a reduction of $4 million to $5 million.

Neal said the new eligibility requirements put 31,000 state residents in danger of losing their coverage completely, while hundreds of thousands more will see their premiums increase dramatically. In Neal’s district alone, there are 287,000 people on Medicare, and 106,000 of them are children. He said 21% of Massachusetts residents are uninsured, but every child in the state has coverage, if not through a private plan, then through Medicaid.

The legislation’s changes to

Medicaid eligibility implement work requirements, which Banko said have not worked in Georgia or Arkansas, where he previously worked in hospital administration. Medicaid mostly covers low-income Americans. More than 1-in-3 Medicaid recipients are children, 10% are seniors and another 10% are people with disabilities.

“We’re not talking about people who don’t deserve it,” Banko said of the health care coverage.

The system may not be perfect he said, but “we don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.”

Neal said politics have colored the way people see Medicaid. He said that if you ask people if they support the Affordable Care Act, they will say yes. But ask them if they support Obamacare — the nickname given to the law by Republicans when it was passed — and they will say no.

“If people think you’re taking it away from them and giving it to someone else, it’s a loser,” Neal said. He emphasized that the Affordable Care Act expands insurance coverage to more people, rather than choosing who gets coverage.

The cuts will also impact commercial insurance plans, Banko said. Under the law, hospitals are required to treat people with emergencies regardless of their ability to pay. As more uninsured people visit emergency departments for health care, the unpaid costs and financial pressures will filter into the wider insurance market.

“Emergency room visits are a bad way to get health care,” Neal said.

Neal went on to say, “Health care in our valley is not just about services.” He explained that it is also about people, including the “tens of thousands” employed in the area’s health care industry.

hospitals and 50 medical offices. Mercy Medical Center in Springfield employs 2,000 more, another 3,000 are employed by Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

From a different perspective, Neal said, Medicare is the largest employer in Western Massachusetts because so much health care is paid through the program.

Banko said nearly half of Baystate’s patients, 48%, have Medicare for insurance. Another 23% are on Medicaid.

Cost of business While 71% of Baystate patients use Medicare and Medicaid, Banko said neither of these programs fully cover care expenses incurred by patients. Last year, Baystate Health “operated in the positive” for the first time in six years. Banko said the $180 million in revenue was reinvested back into the facilities. However, he said the OB3 Act “wipes that out.” Banko said the expenses are largely out of the company’s control. These include employee health insurance costs and supplies. He said half of the rise in supply costs are due to federal tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Banko, who took over as CEO in 2024, remarked that he has taken heat over recent deci-

sions, including offering buyouts for some non-patient facing personnel who decide to voluntarily separate from the company.

“I’m trying to turn a battleship in a bathtub,” he said of his efforts to maneuver the company into a healthy financial position.

Banko said people should brace themselves for changes the healthcare industry will make in response to these economic factors. He predicted mergers and acquisitions as companies try to make use of economies of scale.

There will likely be a streamlining of services and programs and longer wait times in emergency departments as people without primary care doctors seek treatment. He acknowledged that wait times are already an issue.

Banko said many of the impacts will not hit people’s wallets until after the midterm elections in November 2026. “We’ve got time, so our community has to advocate on our behalf in Boston and Washington.” Neal said the American Hospital Association was also advocating against the end of the subsidies.

When asked what else people can do to help, Banko quipped, “Prayers are always good,” before asking the public to “support the people in our organizations” and “extend a little grace.”

Observances planned for Knox Trail’s 250th in Jan.

WESTFIELD — Westfield Historical Commissioner Jennifer Thielen read a proclamation to the City Council at its meeting on Dec. 18 in honor of Major General Henry Knox. The proclamation foreshadows planned celebrations in Westfield, Blandford and Springfield to honor Knox’s Noble Artillery Train, and in Westfield for the 250th signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 3, 2026.

Thielen said at the age of 24, Henry Knox led a crew of teamsters driving oxen and carrying cannons captured from the British at Fort Ticonderoga in New York through the Berkshire hills, and then through Westfield on Jan. 12, 1776, on his way to Cambridge to challenge the occupation of Boston by the British army.

Thielen said after the historic victory, considered a turning point in the Revolutionary War, Massachusetts was freed from the tyranny of King George III, and Knox rose in ranks to major general.

in Westfield, and declares him as an honorary citizen of the city of Westfield posthumously. It also resolves to undertake on July 3, 2026 in Westfield a celebration of the legacy of Knox and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The proclamation and planned celebration are two of several observances in the area of Major General Henry Knox and his efforts on what is commonly known as the Knox Trail.

Blandford observance On Jan. 11, the Blandford Historical Society is hosting a Cannon Salute and Bonfire Celebration from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Blandford Fairgrounds to commemorate the arrival of Henry Knox’s artillery train in Blandford.

According to Mary Hull, a member of the Historical Society, the winter expedition led by Henry Knox during the American Revolutionary War transported 60 tons of captured cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in New York to the Continental Army outside of Boston.

“The arduous 300-mile journey, undertaken in the winter of 1775-1776, was a critical logistical achievement that provided

the firepower needed to force the British evacuation of Boston in March 1776. Over the course of three winter months, Knox and his men moved cannons and other armaments by boat, horse, ox-drawn sledges, and manpow-

Westfield lights eighth Hanukkah candle on Dec. 21

WESTFIELD — The lighting of the Menorah on the Elm Street Plaza on Dec. 21, was not only the celebration of the eighth day of Hanukkah, the festival of lights, but of the rededication of the Congregation Ahavas Achim 50 years ago in Westfield.

Rabbi Shahar Colt led the attendees in a song that celebrated light and peace. “One little light can keep us going,” she said, saying the rededication was of Jews to Jewish life in the city.

Colt said the name of the holiday means dedication. She asked those gathered what each of them are rededicating themselves to as members of Ahavas Achim. “We rededicate ourselves to all the ways we support each other in the community of Westfield,” she said. “Especially in this time of violence, bias, and intergroup strife, how can we be more in community and connect to each other.”

Colt then asked Amy Tosi, representing Mayor Mike McCabe and City Hall, to light the eighth candle on the menorah. Also present on the stage were Councilors Bridget Matthews-Kane and Cindy Harris. Everyone was then invited to a Latkes and Lights party at the First United Methodist Church.

After the potato latkes were served, with sour cream, apple

sauce and oranges, longtime congregant Risa Larson introduced Westfield historian Robert Brown, professor emeritus at Westfield State University, who spoke about the history of the Jewish community and of the Congregation Ahavas Achim in Westfield.

Brown said he and his wife, Judy Brown, are the last surviving members of the original group of 14 families that reestablished the congregation 50 years ago, although the community’s origins date back to the mid-19th century.

“The Jewish community of Westfield was always very small,” Brown said, adding that it was not a significant part of the political, social or economic life of Westfield, which he called in the early years “a very Yankee, very white community.”

He said in the 1850s, the Jews in Westfield were largely male, with not many women or children.

Known among them were the four Jackson brothers, who ran a dry goods store and were peddlers, taking trips to the hilltowns to sell their wares. On one of the trips, one of the brothers was murdered, which marked the first appearance in the newspaper of the community, Brown said.

A few years later, three Solomon brothers, John, Henry and Phineas, immigrated from England, where they were in the cigar industry, to Westfield. When war broke out, John and Henry

joined the 10th regiment in Massachusetts, representing the Union army, and Phineas joined a New York regiment.

After the war, John joined his brother, then known as Joseph Thompson, in Australia. Henry suffered a head wound in the war and Phineas became active in the cigar industry. Phineas became one of the founders of Woronoco Savings Bank, now known as Berkshire Bank.

Both Henry and Phineas eventually emigrated to Australia, where they are buried in a cemetery in Sydney under the name of Thompson that now serves as the site of American Memorial Day ceremonies in Sydney.

Brown said the second major period of the Jewish community in Westfield was from the late 19th century up until World War I, when 9,000 new immigrants, mostly Lithuanians, Poles, Russians and Slovaks, a small minority of them Jewish, doubled Westfield’s population.

He said the Jewish community resided in what he referred to as the Westfield Jewish ghetto on Morris and Maple streets off of Franklin Street for the first 30 to 40 years.

Brown said they were poor, mostly peddlers and shoemakers.

They had minimal religious services under lay rabbis until 1917, when they were able to create a Synagogue named Ahavas Achim

on Sumner Street. The building is behind Santiago’s restaurant, and now, a Puerto Rican church.

Their first rabbi, Jacob Kaplowitz, served from 1932 to 1941. After he left in 1941, the congregation was served by three rabbis, all refugees from the war and all trained rabbis who did not stay. Brown said by 1944, the congregation was aging and on shaky ground, and from 1955 to 1965, they no longer held services ex-

cept on high holy days. Finally, in 1967, the temple building was sold, and the Torah scrolls were transferred to Springfield.

In 1975, Westfield State psychology professor Harvey Rosen and history professors Marty Kaufman and Bob Brown met during a benefit and started talking about the lack of a Jewish congregation in Westfield, Brown said.

Library grounds project on hold after funding snafu

SOUTHWICK — The project to enhance the grounds of the public library has been paused after learning the Community Preservation Committee mistakenly approved its initial funding application to purchase fixtures in 2024, and once again in October to finish the project.

“Our project should never have been approved to begin with because it doesn’t fit their funding criteria,” public library Director Lynn Blair said during the Library Board of Trustee meeting earlier this month.

In February 2024, Blair applied for an allocation of $22,659 from the CPC to revitalize the lightly treed area on the west side of the library at 95 Feeding Hills Road.

She told the committee the plan was to purchase percussion musical instruments and fixtures for a story walk path to be permanently installed, and to buy picnic tables, benches, a

trash can and a security camera.

Using the recreation criteria for Community Preservation Act funding, the CPC members unanimously approved the request to ask Town Meeting to allocate the funds for the library, which it did in May 2024.

Originally, the town’s former building and grounds director was going to oversee the project, including taking care of the concrete needed to install the instruments and fixtures.

However, the building and grounds director left, and the project languished for over a year and a half as Blair explored the options to finish it.

After getting quotes for the concrete work and with pledges of $10,000 from the Wolf family, $5,000 from the Friends of the Library, $1,000 from the Mastroianni family, and from Southwick Tree Service LLC to remove two trees for free, Blair went back before the CPC in October for $24,232 to complete it.

The committee approved it and was in the process of drafting an article for the funding for the Special Town Meeting being held on Jan. 13 when it learned in November, after a presentation by the executive director of the Community Preservation Coalition Act, it shouldn’t have approved the library’s second application because the enhancements would not be considered permanent as required by the recreation criteria.

“I think we came to that realization when [the executive director] was speaking … we were going, ‘uh-oh,’” said CPC chair Christopher Pratt.

The coalition director said in a letter to the CPC about its approval of the library’s application that it was an “honest mistake” and offered an option, which was to have the town establish that parcel beside the library as a park.

Pratt included the possibility of just asking the Select Board for the funding.

“We might want to see if the town will just fund this thing.

You know, it might be cheaper in the long run,” he said.

Blair made it clear during the trustee meeting that neither worked.

“Both of which I don’t think are very good options for us,” Blair said.

She said the Parks & Recreation Commission didn’t need another thing to worry about, and if the park option was used, it would mean any outside events on the library grounds would need to be approved by the commission.

As for asking the Select Board for the funding: “I don’t want to go to the Select Board for money because we have more pressing needs,” she said.

Fortunately, Blair said at the meeting, of the $22,269 allocation approved in 2024, only $855 has been used, which was to purchase the security camera.

Blair said on Dec. 22 that she will work with Town Ac-

countant Laura Fletcher to send the original allocation back and that the $855 will be covered by the library.

Also, the two families that pledged the money, the Wolf family had yet to make the donation, but the Mastroianni family had already donated the $1,000.

“They wanted to know if there are any other things that we wanted to work on or needed, we could just use the funds for that,” Blair said of that donation.

During the trustee meeting and speaking on Monday, Blair said the project is still a possibility.

“It may be something more budget-friendly we can look at in the future,” Blair said.

The CPC approves spending from an account funded by a surtax on local property taxes and matching grants from the state. Community preservation funds can only be spent on open space, public housing, history and recreation projects.

EDC urges board to form committee for Complete Street program

SOUTHWICK — With an eye toward connecting the Rail Trail to College Highway, the Economic Development Commission unanimously approved sending a letter to the Select Board asking it to establish an ad hoc committee that would determine if the state’s Complete Streets Program is a right fit for the town.

“So, I’m just making a recommendation to the Select Board to constitute an ad hoc committee to study a potential use for a million-dollar Complete Streets

grant,” said EDC chair Greg Deily during the commission’s meeting on Dec. 17.

“That’s all we’re saying here.

It’s not even defining what that proposal would be other than we should have a committee that studies it,” Deily said.

His reasoning is that the program is important for the economic development of the town.

“The main benefit would be economic development for the town and the quality of life,” he said.

Goddard said that is was relatively easy for the town to participate in the program, an incentive-based initiative providing technical assistance and construction grants of up to $1,000,000 to municipalities for designing safe, accessible roads for all users — pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and motorists of all ages/ abilities. It focuses on enhancing safety, equity, and multimodal mobility through infrastructure improvements.

All the town needs to do to participate is adopt a Complete Streets policy that outlines its commitment to designing and operating its streets for all users.

Once the town commits, it would immediately qualify for a $38,000 technical assistance grant to develop a detailed prioritization plan.

With that step done, the town would then qualify for grant funding to carry out the initiatives.

At the EDC meeting, Commissioner Craig Samuelsen said he wanted the letter to the Select Board to ask for more than just establishing an ad hoc committee.

“I wish we had more teeth in it,” Samuelsen said, referring to the letter asking for the committee. “I mean, if something needs to be done, then why don’t they just do it?”

Deily said unless a process was laid out, it might just get pushed aside.

“We’ve got to make it easy for them,” Deily said, referring to the Select Board.

Commissioner Stephen Roache supported an ad hoc committee being formed to research the projects related to the program and make proposals to the Select Board.

“It can make proposals for why we should do this and then have them use their authority to say yes,” Roache said.

Deily said that while researching the program, he found that nearly every city and town in the state, apart from Southwick, have used the Complete Streets program.

“Towns like Granville and Chester have all jumped on it and took advantage of it … and I think we should because we have projects.”

One of those projects is connecting the rail trail to College Highway. The idea has been bouncing around for over a year, but no real steps have been taken to make it a reality.

Deily hopes that having the committee could move it along.

The town’s Economic Development Commission approved sending a request to the Select Board to form a committee to determine if the town should participate in the state’s Complete Streets Program. The commission would like that committee to study building a connector from the Rail Trail to College Highway.

“I’ve got an initial suggestion which is to do the bike path connector, which will greatly increase the value of the bike path traffic, and in doing the connector, I also see it connecting to a safe pedestrian bike crossing on College Highway,” he said.

Commissioner Serena Fuller asked if the connector would cross the Christ Lutheran Church property, asking three times if that was the church Deily attends.

Deily said the route could be adjusted and he envisioned it ending somewhere near the Summer House and creating a crosswalk to cross College Highway.

“I’m not proposing the exact point, but to find the ideal crossing point that would allow people to get across,” he said.

He also said that, currently, the closest crosswalk is at the intersection of College Highway and Route 57/Feeding Hills Road.

“If you’re at the Summer House and you want to cross just the highway, the alternative to it is to walk all the way to the light [at the intersection] … which is a half mile,” Deily said.

He said he’s already done some preliminary work on connector. The Christ Lutheran Church council, he said, was 100% on board if the connector needed to cross its property.

With the construction of the 100-unit condominium project on

Depot Street starting soon, Deily said he communicated with the developer and that he “definitely” would cooperate. The connector would need to intersect the condo-project property.

Deily also said he had spoken to David DeiDolori, the chair of the Parks & Recreation Commission.

“He’s done some initial estimates. His estimate, kind of on the high side, would be $500,000,” Deily said, which prompted Samuelsen to ask how long the connector might be.

Deily said a quarter mile, and there were no major bridges or culverts that might increase the cost.

The only structure in the way in the gas pipeline.

Deily said he walked the proposed route with a representative of the Tennessee Gas Pipeline and was told crossing over it was “definitely doable.”

“So in any case, those are all issues to be dealt with. We’re not proposing a finished proposal.

This is a proposal to study it … to not do, or do it,” he said.

Fuller asked who might serve on the ad hoc committee if the Select Board allows it.

Deily thought a representative from the DPW, the Parks & Recreation Commission, the Planning Board and the Select Board.

Knox’s lead crew refused to continue beyond Blandford due to the lack of snow and the difficulty of the terrain. That’s when Blandford resident Solomon Brown stepped up with his teams of oxen to help get the artillery down the treacherous “Devil’s Staircase.”

He said while two of the three of them were in mixed marriages — Judy Brown is Jewish, and Bob Brown and Rosen’s wife were not Jewish — they decided to try to start one. They reached out to other Jews on the faculty, and Kaufman went through the phonebook, sending letters out to people asking if they would be interested in establishing a Jewish community.

The first meeting was held on April 14 at Brown’s house, where 25 people gathered to meet with a retired rabbi from Springfield, Irwin Schneider, who encouraged them to go for it. Schneider told them the history of the Jewish community in America is about

The anniversary program will feature living-history demonstrations and educational experiences that highlight the hardship, ingenuity and teamwork that defined Knox’s journey. Visitors will learn how this pivotal mission shaped the opening months of the Revolutionary War and influenced America’s path to

independence.

“This commemoration is about more than reenactments.

It’s about honoring the determination and teamwork that shaped the earliest days of our nation, the contributions of citizens in Springfield and the surrounding towns, and ensuring these stories remain alive for future generations,” said Superintendent Kelly Fellner.

Event highlights at the Springfield Armory will include horse- and oxen-drawn cannon sledge demonstration, showing how artillery was hauled across icy terrain during the winter of 1775–76; colonial militia interpreters presenting drills, equipment, and camp life; artillery and firearms blank firing demonstrations illustrating 18th-century weapons technology; and a Continental Arsenal in Springfield exhibit exploring the Armory’s

foundational role in supporting the Continental Army.

The commemoration is presented in collaboration with regional reenactors, historical organizations and patriotic groups.

Special recognition will be given to the Knox Trail communities of Westfield, West Springfield, Springfield, Wilbraham, Palmer and Warren — towns that continue to preserve and share the history of Knox’s route, Fellner said. At the next meeting on May 9, 1975, 14 families — 40 people — showed up. At the meeting, led

by Kaufman, they adopted the former name of Congregation Ahavas Achim. Brown said they also received strong encouragement from the five remaining members of the congregation, who were happy to see it start up again.

In the fall of 1975, they held their first high services led by a rabbinical student in Springfield.

Twenty-two families paid dues that fall, and they received a Torah scroll that had been donated to a Boston temple that had many of them.

Judy Brown started a Sunday school in their home that she ran for many years. Bob Brown said, unfortunately, Marty Kaufman died two years later, but the community was secure. In 1981, they held their first bar mitzvah for

Brown’s son, Bob Brown.

Initially, the new congregation met at the Masonic Temple and occasionally in the First Methodist Church. They have been meeting in the Interfaith Center at Westfield State University since the late 1980s.

Brown said since shortly after its founding, Congregation Ahavas Achim has been providing monthly meals for the Westfield Soup Kitchen on the first Thursday of each month and also preparing a roast beef dinner every year on Christmas.

“We became active once again and survived 50 years,” Brown said. “All organizations, after a number of years, get tired.

It’s clear that the community remains small and transient, always was, but it survived. Congratulations — as active members of a community that has a long history in Westfield.”

New Westfield resident Joseph Schneiderman, said he moved to

the city a year and a half ago. A lawyer and displaced New Yorker, he said he knew he was home when he taught the mayor and Matthews-Kane to play dreidel at last year’s Hanukkah celebration.

“I’m home at long last,” he said.

Domestic Violence Task Force training set for Jan. 14

HUNTINGTON — The Hilltown Safety at Home program and the Southern Hilltown Domestic Violence Task Force are offering the “In Her Shoes” training on Jan. 14, from 2:454:15 p.m. at Gateway Regional High School, 12 Littleville Road.

The interactive training includes walk-through real-life scenarios faced by survivors of domestic violence.

Discussions will consider how power and privilege intersect with class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and status.

Participants will have an opportunity to gain insight into the barriers and tough choices survivors encounter every day, and learn how to support and advocate for those affected by abuse.

It works closely with Gateway schools on a variety of prevention projects, including the first social norms dating violence prevention project in

the country and the Karen Hart scholarship.

Task force outreach projects include bystander campaigns using dozens of local residents in public service ads, and brochures aimed at those who are being abused but do not intend to leave their home.

“We firmly believe that

Heartbeat Theater presents “Proof” Newly founded Heartbeat Theater will present its inaugural production, “Proof,” by David Auburn, opening Jan. 16 in The Blue Room at CitySpace in Easthampton.

Directed by Jason RoseLangston, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is set in the early 2000s and centers on the family of a recently deceased mathematical genius, examining grief, legacy and questions of truth through shifting moments between past and present.

The cast includes William Spademan as Robert, a professor of mathematics; Kimberly Gaughan as his daughter and caretaker, Catherine; Anne Zager as Catherine’s sister, Claire; and Shelton Windham as Hal, a former student of Robert’s.

Majestic to stage ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ The Majestic Theater in West Springfield will present “The Hound of the Baskervilles” from Jan. 8 through Feb. 15. Written by Stephen Canny and John Nicholson, the play is a parody adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mystery.

The production follows Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as they investigate the death of Sir Charles Baskerville, believed to be connected to a supernatural hound. The cast features three actors performing multiple roles.

Supremes, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye; while the Philly Sound, originated in Philadelphia and spearheaded by groups like Gamble & Huff and MFSB, featured lush orchestrations and arrangements and dance-oriented tracks, often with a funkier, and ethereal feel.

Both genres will be brought to life by Coaches, Liam, Keith and the Orchestra with hits by The Spinners, The Stylistics, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Lou Rawls, Diana Ross, Gamble & Huff, Percy Sledge and more.

Famous hits from the Philly Sound will include “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” “You’ll Never Find A Love Like Mine,” “Rock The Boat” and “Love Train,” joined by Motown staples including “What’s Going On,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “I’m Coming Out.” The SSO is hosting this Pops concert during the weekend of the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday and the Springfield-based community organization, MLK, Jr. Family Services, will be the SSO’s nonprofit partner for the event. Jeremy Keith is a highly accomplished alternative/soul recording artist, known for his distinctive tone and impressive background vocal work. With a career spanning over 20 years, he has earned international recognition, notably as the lead vocalist for the BB King All Star Band at

Sea and as a background vocalist for Grammy Award-winning artist Stephanie Mills, among other musical icons. One of his standout contributions includes background vocals on Kaleo’s double platinum hit, “Way Down We Go.” Keith’s latest release, “Try”, has garnered widespread acclaim.

William Waldrop, who recently conducted the SSO’s signature Holiday Pops concert on Dec. 13 for the fourth year, will return for “Let’s Groove Tonight.”

He is a broadway music director, conductor and pianist who served as the associate conductor for Broadway’s longest running musical, “The Phantom of the Opera.” Waldrop also served as

music director and conductor of the Broadway revival of “Cats” at the Neil Simon Theatre. He also completed a 30-city tour as the music director and conductor of the revival of “Evita” (Broadway National Tour) and conducted the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra in Washington, D.C. for the tour’s final performances. As a composer, he premiered his solo concert “Still,” and “Still Moving: The Music of William Waldrop” at New York City’s famed (and former) Metropolitan Room.

Waldrop is also an accomplished vocal coach and an active educator, leading regular master classes throughout New York City.
