East Longmeadow buries 2026-2076 time capsule IN THIS

EAST LONGMEADOW — History repeats itself in East Longmeadow with the burial of the 2026-2076 time capsule, hoisted down and sealed off in the same location as residents did 50 years ago with the 1976-2026 time capsule.

Residents and elected officials gathered at Heritage Park on July 16 to get one final look at the time capsule until it is unearthed in 2076. Contents in the 1976 capsule will be unveiled on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center.

East Longmeadow Rotary Club member Dawn Starks kicked off the celebration by recognizing her fellow Time Capsule Committee members, who refer to themselves as the “time capsule keepers.”

The “time capsule keepers” include Starks, Historical Commission Chair Christine Devlin, Historical Commission member George Kingston, Historical Commission associate Brian Bracci, Historical Commission contributor Andrea Driscoll, Rotary Club member Dan Burack, former School Committee member Greg Thompson and Town Manager Tom Christensen.

“We’ve had a successful submission from our town’s folks, all kinds of really cool stuff that’s wanted,” Starks said. “We’ve had families that have taken a lot of time to put together a lot of things of the times. We have a lot of town artifacts, pictures,

Starks said the time capsule was in memoriam for the “head honcho,” former Historical Commission Chair Tom Behan, who died in January. She said “he had a great vision for this and we tried to stay true to it and honor his memory” before giving the floor to Devlin.

Devlin said Behan proposed burying a new time capsule when she first joined the Historical Commission in 2024.

“Tom said, ‘it will be here before we know it,’ and he was right,” Devlin said. “We very sadly lost Tom in January of this

year. Thankfully though, we’ve had a fantastic team that has come together to pick up where Tom left off. It was a true group effort, but without Tom’s excitement and enthusiasm for this project, we would not be here today.”

She said burying this time capsule while unearthing the 1976 one has shown how much things change in 50 years. Items in the 1976 capsule include cassettes tapes, 8mm film, old photographs and letters.

“It’s difficult to even imagine what 2076 may look like,” Devlin said. “We’ve had some fantastic submissions, and we thank all the residents and businesses that have participated, and a special thank you to Go Graphix for their donation of the beautiful wrap for the capsule.”

2025-2026 Rotary Club President Derrick Feuerstein said the club’s theme is “united for good,” and that the capsule is a great example of that. He added that he first met Behan in the Fazio’s parking lot, stating that he was “so full of excitement.”

“He was like, ‘there’s a time capsule, it needs to be dug up, we need to do something about it, we need to have a party, we need to create a new one, we need to do this and that,’” Feuerstein said.

“I’m like ‘okay, come talk to our group.’ The fun thing was, there were people at that meeting who were here when they buried the last one … the rotarians, the East Longmeadow Historical Commission, town officials and others

Event celebrates 100th anniversary of hockey in area

WEST SPRINGFIELD — Hockey players and fans from the United States and Canada are set to gather at West Springfield’s Better Living Center in the Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds to celebrate 100 years of professional hockey in Western Massachusetts at the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society’s annual “Hockeyday” on July 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for members of the heritage society and $18 for non-members, available at hockeyday2026.eventbrite.com or in-person at West Springfield’s Steve’s Sports, 94 Front St. The Springfield Hockey Heritage Society is a nonprofit that strives to “preserve the history of hockey in Springfield,” according to a press release.

Hockey in Western Massachusetts dates back to 1926 when the Springfield Indians, named after the Springfield-based Indian Motorcycle Company, began playing for the American Hockey League at the Eastern States Coliseum.

“Hockeyday” will take place just a building away from the Coliseum, and features raffles, an auction for hockey-memorabilia and non-hockey related items,

Town Council President Ralph Page said it’s amazing to look at the items put into the new capsule, and that events like these are a part of the town’s culture and show town pride.

“We love it here,” Page said.

“Anyone that moves here is just overtaken by it, and that’s what

cornhole and other games, vintage jersey and equipment displays, and exclusive merchandise and apparel with past Springfield hockey logos.

Former Springfield Kings player Mike Corrigan said in the release that the event grows each year and includes more former professional players coming back to reminisce on their Springfield playing days. The Springfield Indians temporarily rebranded to the Kings from 1967-1975.

“The Springfield Hockey Heritage Society really cares about preserving the history of hockey in Springfield and it shows,” Corrigan said in the release.

“This gathering is first-class all the way.”

Springfield Hockey Heritage Society Executive Director Steve Bordeaux said around 20 former Springfield players will be in attendance to share stories and sign autographs. He added that the Springfield Thunderbirds’ team bus will be there, along with mascots from the Thunderbirds and possibly the Worcester Railers.

“It’s a good day, all in all,” Bordeaux said. “Just lots of stuff going on … The Springfield Thunderbirds bring their inflatable shooting game, there is cornhole for the kids and whom-

ever to play.”

The event is going back to Springfield hockey’s roots, and Bordeaux said the heritage society found the family of a player from the 1926 Springfield Indians and invited them to the event.

“There was one player on the 1926 team, his name was [Henry ‘Buddy’ Maracle],” Bordeaux said. “We’ve actually tracked

down his descendants up in St. Catherines, Ontario, and we’re bringing four of his descendants down. They couldn’t be more excited to come down and see where Buddy played 100 years ago. I think that’s gonna be super special for them and for us.”

He added that the heritage society is just trying to have a great event for its attendees.

“It’s more about the people that want to go and be part of it, that they have a good time,” Bordeaux said. “We’re behind the scenes putting it all together, and it could get stressful, and it does get stressful, but it’s more about the people having a good time.”

State Rep. Angelo Puppolo thanked everybody who contributed to the project, adding that it continues East Longmeadow traditions of “excitement in all of the fun and festivities.”

“That’s what it’s all about,” Puppolo said. “It’s a tradition. It’s everybody coming together in town for a great cause, for a good time. We really have a reflection, not only about what we put years ago in here, but what we’re putting in now and what it signifies and the significance it has to what we have in a daily life right here

in East Longmeadow.”

He said the items in the capsule and the dedication it took to make it happen show the small town charm and what makes East Longmeadow special.

State Rep. Brian Ashe said the event is significant in honoring where the town has come in the last 50 years and what it’ll be in another 50 years. He said he will be 113 years old when it’s dug up, so “thank god medicine will be fantastic.”

He added that he and Behan were classmates throughout the East Longmeadow schools

and bumped into him again a few years ago. He said the event “brings a piece of the past back to us.”

“It really meant a lot to get to know him again, to talk about the old days and just growing up,” Ashe said. “Thank you all for contributing, thank you for keeping this alive. Thank you Tommy up there, I appreciate you, miss you brother.”

State Sen. Jake Oliveira said people like Behan “keep history alive for future generations.”

“I will say about Tom, if you got him on a tangent about a his-

torical marker, you might lose several hours of your time,” Oliveira said. “[The time capsule] really shows the history of East Longmeadow, and when people open this time capsule 50 years from now, I hope they understand that preserving our history for the future is so important.”

Once the speakers concluded, Thompson and his company, Stripes Lawn Service, lowered the lid onto the capsule, lifted it up and lowered it into the large hole. Dirt poured down on top of it and officially sealed the capsule’s new home until 2076.

Hockeyday is back on July 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Consider a candidate who will fight for queer constituents

In May 2026, Representative Angelo Puppolo addressed The Reminder about his 10th reelection race for the 12th Hampden District. In the interview, Puppolo looked both to his past record and his future priorities. One of the stances that he remarked upon with pride was his vote on marriage equality, which he said was a “critically important bill moving forward for individual rights”.

The full scope of his voting record on marriage equality, however, tells a different story.

In 2008, Puppolo was one of 21 Democrats who opposed the repeal of a 1913 law that had been used to block same-sex marriages involving out-of-state couples. Speaking to The Republican after the vote, he said “This law had really no impact on residents of Massachusetts. If people want to get married in Massachusetts, they should live here.”

The record continues. In 2011, Puppolo voted twice in opposition to legislation regarding transgender rights. One was a bill extending civil rights protections to the transgender community; the other a bill that would outlaw discrimination in employment, housing and credit against transgender persons.

In 2016, he was one of only 12 Democrats to vote against a bill that aimed to prevent discrimination against transgender people.

He did, however, vote in favor of an amendment that would have

created a criminal penalty of up to five years in prison for entering a restroom or locker room inconsistent with one’s sex assigned at birth.

Representative Puppolo has never publicly readdressed these votes or expressed regret for them. Claiming a record of advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community while voting against their rights is an outrageous contradiction. One that doesn’t speak to the character of a politician ready to fight for their queer constituents in office.

Puppolo’s Democratic primary challenger Michael Lachenmeyer, on the other hand, is a staunch supporter of queer and trans communities. Lachenmeyer volunteers for PFLAG East Longmeadow. PFLAG is, per their mission statement, the “nation’s first and largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them”.

On the legislative end of things, Lachenmeyer supports establishing LGBTQ+ parent advisory councils in Massachusetts public schools, as well as banning the LGBTQ+ “panic” defense, a legal strategy that uses the victim’s perceived sexual orientation or gender identity in order to evade accountability.

“LGBTQ+ people have had to fight for their human rights for far too long,” Lachenmeyer says on his platform page. “I am running for state representative because equality and dignity are not negotiable.”

This Sept. 1, let’s look to the candidate who won’t negotiate when it comes to his queer con-

stituency.

Massachusetts should ban cryptocurrency kiosks

Like many Americans, I’ve been horrified to hear the increasing number of reports of people’s life savings being wiped out by scammers. Upon retiring and moving to the Bay State in 2024, I decided to become an active volunteer in an organization that works to protect people against fraud. One source of fraud is cryptocurrency kiosks.

These machines, which resemble ordinary ATMs and can be found in convenience stores and gas stations, are increasingly being used by scammers to steal money from victims. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office found that more than 80 percent of high-dollar transactions at one crypto kiosk operator were tied to scams.

Massachusetts residents are losing almost 7 million dollars annually through fraud involving these machines. These are often life savings and retirement funds that victims never recover.

The Legislature should act now and pass Senate Bill 3048 (The SCAM Act) a statewide ban on cryptocurrency kiosks. Consumer protection should come before the interests of companies profiting from fraud.

Business owner proposes new indoor golf simulator

EAST LONGMEADOW — An East Longmeadow business owner is taking a swing toward obtaining a restaurant license from the Town Council to open a newly proposed, alcohol serving indoor golf simulator.

The council reorganized positions and welcomed applicant Joseph Tremblay to discuss the proposed business at its meeting on July 14.

Council President Connor O’Shea nominated Councilor Ralph Page to serve as Town Council president for the next year, which passed unanimously.

O’Shea still acted as president for this meeting at Page’s request.

Town Manager Tom Christensen said Tremblay was trying to avoid that by not having a kitchen, and Page added that using a microwave or a toaster is still serving food to the public.

A.W. Brown’s summer series includes baby goat Pilates class

EAST LONGMEADOW — East Longmeadow’s A.W. Brown’s Pet & Garden is bringing a furry-friend-filled Pilates class for attendees of all skill levels as a part of its “Summer Bash Event Series.”

Beyond Yoga & Wellness’ Ashley Bousquet will instruct baby goat Pilates on July 26 from 2-3 p.m. at A.W. Brown’s, 144 Shaker Road. Tickets are $30, or $50 to take part in a yoga class immediately following goat Pilates from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The class is designed for all levels, ages 7 and up, and mats are available to rent for $3. Every participant also receives a $10 gift card to A.W. Brown’s.

“Goat yoga and goat Pilates is super fun, it’s all levels and it’s family friendly,” Bousquet said.

“Everybody, literally everybody, any mobility, any nerve divergence, any limited disability or limited mobility. Everyone’s able to participate, and I think that’s

what makes these classes so unique and so special, because it truly brings the entire community together. There’s no boundaries, wellness without boundaries.”

She said goat yoga is typically a lot more common than goat Pilates, and that this is a low intensity mat class without many standing exercises. East Longmeadow’s Cloverbrook Farm lends the goats, training them to constantly interact with attendees.

“We have maximum contact with the goats,” Bousquet said.

“Maximum cuddles and snuggles with goats. They’re constantly climbing on people. We’re in different poses doing different exercises and the goats are constantly involved. They’re jumping on top of us, underneath us, around us.”

She added that this is a good first class for someone who has never done Pilates, and that the animals allow people to relax more than a typical class. While baby goats and other animals are a fun addition to a Pilates routine, there is a science to it.

“The science is, it’s definitely

backed,” Bousquet said. “It helps with any type of stress, anxiety disorders, dealing with PTSD, trauma, because it forces you to be present and the animals give you that sense of dopamine or serotonin. There’s all these extra feel good chemicals that go to the brain where there’s animals involved. It’s just endless joy and it’s all about joy … your mood increases, you feel more relaxed, you feel more at ease, you just feel good afterwards. Some people need that, and maybe they don’t even realize they need that until they take the class.”

Bousquet also hosts classes with puppies, pigs, bunnies and horses. She said horses have the ability to match human heart rate and allow people to feel calm.

“It’s really cool, it’s animal therapy,” Bousquet said. “I see firsthand what it does to people, like people with neurodivergence, who sometimes don’t feel included in some of these types of wellness classes. They’re able to take part, there’s a sense of relaxing and a sense of feeling includ-

Kennealy keeps $1M in loans despite OCPF objections

He said “keep the light snacks available where it’s not actual food preparation, that’s what we’re going for.”

Page said he had concerns based on zoning bylaws that don’t allow a bar, tavern or a “lounge,” and that there are restaurant permits for all-alcoholic businesses.

“Without food service, I mean, it’s specifically stated when we do it that you have to serve food at all times that alcohol is available,” Page said. “We’ve had issues with this, and I know we have other recreational facilities like Shaker Bowl … it’s a recreational facility but they also serve full food. That’s the way it’s always been done, and I would have a hard time looking to change from that.”

Page added it wouldn’t fall under “golf recreation” because it’s not in the golf recreation district.

“I assume this would be a recreational facility, commercial or private,” Page said. “In Industrial Garden Park, you do need a special permit for it.”

Tremblay said he would be happy to satisfy whatever rules needed upon obtaining a special permit, and that customers would be given UberEats or Grubhub gift cards to order food during their stay.

“They don’t have to order food if they’re not hungry,” Tremblay said. “They have the option to have food delivered right to the doorstep. That is part of the idea there to circumvent needing to

put a kitchen in.”

Christensen said there was a similar situation at the East Longmeadow High School concession stand, and that it still counts as giving out food even if someone else is bringing it in.

He suggested a meeting with the Health Department to figure out “where the line is” and how to not impact the space with a full commercial kitchen.

Page said the business should be a restaurant since the council would be giving a restaurant license, and that there is a difference between a food service and a restaurant.

“Unless the council at some point chooses to allow what we haven’t, whether it be taverns, bars, lounges,” Page said. “I think that would be a conversation that we had with the Planning Department … if you’re drinking alcohol, we want you to be able to consume food, which takes up some of it and offsets it.”

O’Shea said the business is a great idea and that he doesn’t have a problem with it, but that there is a “gray area” in terms of what the town currently allows “legally versus the line that we’re trying to find in the sand.”

He said “I’m not opposed to it, but I don’t know that we could approve it even conditionally tonight without doing a little more research and working with [Tremblay] on that.”

Tremblay said he isn’t seeking any favors or to “set a new precedent,” but would like to see the business work out for the betterment of the town and the building.

Asked by the News Service in May whether Kennealy had reclassified the loans as donations that couldn’t be recouped, OCPF spokesperson Jason Tait said, “If contributions are recategorized, they will appear on the public database.” OCPF confirmed on July 13 that “nothing has changed,” though the contributions are listed as “Loan Pending Legal Determination.”

Despite its numerous audits of Kennealy’s account, OCPF has not taken action to compel Kennealy to comply with campaign finance laws.

When asked whether allowing the contributions to remain categorized as a loan — or allowing Kennealy to claim that money back — could create a precedent for future candidates, OCPF reiterated its interpretation of the law but did not indicate any pending enforcement action.

“OCPF has and continues to enforce loan limits to ensure that the payment of such liabilities does not exceed the statutory lim-

Kennealy launched his campaign touting his fundraising strength, business background and experience in Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration, but his candidacy collapsed at the Republican convention in April after he failed to reach enough delegate support to appear on the primary ballot.

Since dropping out, he has thrown his support behind Mike Minogue — another Republican candidate for governor who has given huge sums of money to his own campaign. Since October, Minogue has contributed $15 million to his campaign and he went into July with just over $9 million cash on hand.

State law does not limit how much a person can donate to their own campaign, only how much they can loan and then recoup.

State Sen. Becca Rausch filed a budget amendment this year to limit self-donations, naming it “elections are not for sale,” but withdrew it without debate.

He said he would research what he needs to get it off the ground, and include a kitchen as a “very last resort.” He added that he visited other businesses similar to this one and that food is just a convenience more than a primary, and that people are mostly just focused on the golf.

O’Shea added that the coun-

cil could explore modifying the bylaw if it came down to it, but still prohibit uses that are strictly related to a drinking atmosphere.

He said “maybe there’s something we could do if that’s like an ancillary use to some other activity that’s occurring in a commercial space.”

Former Councilor Marilyn Richards attended the meeting and said serving food with alcohol is the responsible thing to do, bylaw aside. She said “I hope there’s a path to success because I think it’s a great idea.”

The public hearing continues at the Town Council’s meeting on Aug. 11 at 6:15 p.m.

BOSTON — Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Kennealy plans to keep more than $1 million in disputed campaign loans on the books, despite repeated objections from state campaign finance regulators.

Kennealy, who dropped out of the GOP governor’s race in April after failing to secure enough delegates at that month’s Republican convention, contributed $2 million of his own money to his campaign from April 2025 through January 2026 in 10 separate $200,000 installments categorized as loans. State campaign finance law caps candidate loans at $200,000 per election cycle.

The Office of Campaign and Political Finance repeatedly instructed the campaign to reclassify the excess funds as contributions.

“As your committee has exceeded this limit for the 2026 gubernatorial primary election, the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth loans must be reclassified as individual contributions from the candidate,” OCPF wrote in a Feb. 20 audit letter after Kennealy’s last loan payment.

But the campaign refused, arguing the law limits repayment of candidate loans, not the amount a candidate may lend to their own campaign. The campaign continued filing the money as liabilities owed back to Kennealy rather than donations.

The campaign told the News Service that Kennealy plans to keep the loans in his campaign account.

“The two million dollars Mike Kennealy committed to his campaign have been classified as loans to provide protection for his

family in the event of unforeseen tragedy. He has no plans to seek repayment of those loans at this time,” adviser Jim Conroy said in May. Conroy reconfirmed on July 14 that Kennealy has no intention of seeking repayment and will leave the loans on his campaign’s books.

The campaign has said for months that the strategy of lending the money, rather than just donating it outright, was intended to protect Kennealy’s family financially.

“The reason Mike Kennealy categorizes his personal contributions to the campaign as loans rather than direct donations is in the unlikely event of an unforeseen tragedy, this structure allows his family the ability to recoup the funds he invested in the campaign,” said former spokesperson for the campaign, Logan Trupiano, in October. Trupiano now works for GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Shortsleeve.

In response to OCPF’s monthly audits, Kennealy’s campaign repeatedly referred the agency back to an argument it made last summer, following a conversation between the two camps.

“I also understand from that discussion, and I agree, that Section 7 does not actually prohibit a candidate from loaning more than $200,000 to his or her campaign committee but rather, as a technical legal matter, prohibits the candidate’s committee from repaying more than $200,000 of a candidate loan,” campaign attorney Chris Ashby wrote to OCPF on June 27, 2025.

Ashby added that the campaign would not amend its filings “in order to preserve the right to seek an ultimate legal determination on the constitutionality of Section 7 at a later time, if

‘Family Fun Nights’ brings themed events to town pools

LONGMEADOW — The Longmeadow Parks and Recreation Department is making a splash at the town pools with themed family events on select Friday nights across the remainder of the summer.

The town’s “Family Fun Nights” series at Greenwood and Reynolds Pool kicked off on June 26 with a beach and tropical night, with the next event on July 24 at Reynolds Pool, located in Bliss Park at the corner of Bliss Road and Laurel Street. The theme is “Family Game Night.”

The fun continues on Aug. 21 with a “Family Float and Glow Night” at Reynolds, with “Furry Friends at the Pool” closing out the summer season on Sept. 4 at Greenwood, 231 Maple Road.

Each event runs from 7-9 p.m. and is free with a season pool pass. Attendees can also enter with the daily admission, which is $10 for residents and $13 for non-residents, or $5 after 5 p.m. every day.

The July 24 event will feature large games at different stations, with Aug. 21 having glow

in the dark vibes. Sept. 2 calls for attendees to bring their dogs for a swim.

Parks and Recreation Director Bari Jarvis said the events are an initiative that the town always did before the COVID-19 pandemic and are slowly being brought back. She added that the events are weather dependent, and the first one on June 26 went on through the pouring rain.

“The June 26 event, we had such high hopes for,” Jarvis said. “It was one of those Fridays where we had spot showers, but everyone still had fun.

It was a smaller crowd than we had hoped, so we really hope we get a large crowd for July 24.”

Reynolds Pool will host the next two events, and Jarvis recommended families to enjoy the new Bliss Park playground and have dinner in the park before attending the event.

She added that the department always tries to prioritize family friendliness when picking themed events, and that the game night has been a hit in the past. She said that the pool managers are regarded as “frontline staff” to interact with guests and hear input on what events they

would like to see.

Jarvis said her favorite part about events like these is being able to connect with the community.

“It’s fun to see people during

the day,” Jarvis said. “We see people’s children during the day for swim lessons, but to see families enjoying each other in a really nice atmosphere is always fun.”

Town pools are open from 1-8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m to 7 p.m. on the weekends.

Selectboard discusses potential changes in town health insurance

HAMPDEN — The Hampden Selectboard is discussing health insurance plans and costs after “taking a pretty hard” last year, according to Town Treasurer Richard Patullo.

Patullo joined the Selectboard to discuss potential changes in health insurance plans at its meeting on July 13.

The town self-insures through the Scantic Valley Regional Health Trust, which is composed of six government entities — Hampden, Wilbraham, East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District and the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative.

“We have a consultant that manages this for us and we hire the various insurance companies,” Patullo said. “They manage the insurance program for us and we collect the premiums and pay them the actual claims.

We buy self-insurance for people with very large claims, any individual over $150,000 we reinsure somewhere else.”

Patullo said there is flexibility on what is covered and what isn’t, adding the carriers suggested that GLP-1 medications for weight loss were “getting to be ridiculous” and that no policies carry them as of July 1.

He added that the health trust had “quite a bit of money in the bank” when he started 16 years ago and that around $4.3 million should be set aside for reserves — 12% of the previous 12

months of claims.

“When I first got on it, there was an extra $5 million in there,” Patullo said. “Hampden is about 10% of the trust … so of that $5 million that comes in, half a million of it was our money. I have endeavored to spend that money by reducing rates, returning it to the town for the last 15 years …

Every year the insurance company would say, ‘oh, it’s going to go up 8%,’ and I say, ‘no, I don’t think so,’ so we’d have a 3% rate increase. I’d say ‘well it’s going to cost us a million,’ and it didn’t.

It finally caught up with us in the last two years.”

He said that Hampden’s rate increases have been well below average, and that the town took a hard hit last year for the first time.

“We’re running at claims at about 120% of premiums,” Patullo said. “That’s why we ended up with a net of about 11% increase this year. I was shooting for 10%, but 11% is the best deal I could

get … we are actually about $245,000 below the $4.3 million for reserves, but we’re now into a little higher premium rate.”

There are a few opportunities if Hampden were to change its health insurance plan. Patullo said he detailed deductible and non-deductible plans in an email to the Selectboard, adding that East Longmeadow uses the deductible plan and that it includes “a little bit of savings, not huge.”

“It’s amazing how much smaller the premium is,” Patullo said. “When you look at an individual having a $2,000 medical deductible and a $3,000 prescription deductible, they’re only going to save less than $1,000 a year. They’d be pretty healthy to win on that one, but that is certainly a possibility that we could go to next July.”

Chair John Flynn said “it’s not so much us, I’m thinking more for the school district, which is obviously a much larger percentage, which would pass down into

their budget.”

Patullo said he didn’t know the school district’s numbers but that they’re a larger group and the town only gets 20% of the savings. He added that School Committee Chair Michal Boudreau and other members from the school inquired about a “low cost, low value” policy for younger employees.

“We are going to start looking at seeing if there is a low cost, less value option that we could offer young, healthy employees,” Patullo said. “Your average 25-year-old doesn’t go to the doctor as much as I do, so they’re really looking for the catastrophic. It will probably take us six months to get the answer to that question. We meet again next in September, and they’re going to see what is available in that option. I don’t anticipate it as being anything we force people into, but there might be people who would choose that, save themselves some money.”

Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival brings crowds to Court Square

SPRINGFIELD — Court Square was packed on July 10 for the kickoff of the Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival. The sounds of drums, trombones and banjos echoed off the buildings as people gathered on picnic blankets and

folding lawn and camp chairs.

Nearly a dozen acts took the stage across the two-day event, kicking off with Dan Gabel’s Jazz Ultimate. The free festival is a celebration of jazz and roots music. It is not solely focused on big-time headliners. It also amplifies local talent and youth arts, against a backdrop of communi-

ty. The second day of the festival included a second line parade, seven professional acts and students from the Community Music School of Springfield.

This was the first year the Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival was staged at Court Square.

The stage was set up facing the park, while a dozen food and

drink vendors and more than 20 local artisan crafters lined the street in front of City Hall.

Presented by Blues To Green, a nonprofit that uses music and the arts to center the cultures of the African diaspora in American culture and promote multicultural community. The Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival is the most

visible aspect of the organization, which was inspired by the life and music of Charles Neville. However, it also teaches the history and experience of Black and Afro-Caribbean people, encourages students to express themselves through music and explores the intersection of arts with racial and climate justice.

Legal injunction sought against Liberty Street courthouse site

SPRINGFIELD — The selection of 125 Liberty St. as the future home for the Springfield Regional Justice Center is in question after a legal injunction was sought by two developers whose proper-

ties had also been in the running.

motion in Hampden County Superior Court to halt the project.

According to the complaint, the site owned by FDS MA Liberty Junction LLC was selected

by Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance despite conflicts of interest.

“This decision, which is rife with conflicts of interest, undermines the integrity of the public procurement process by awarding the contract to a company whose principals, John Barros and Conan Harris, have deep conflicts. Mr. Barros is currently the Interim Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority ... a powerful state agency whose Board of Directors include senior DCAMM officials.” Matthew Gorzkowicz is the secretary of the Executive Office of Administration and Finance, the office overseeing DCAMM. He is also an MCCA board member.

The complaint goes on to say

that the project request for proposal submitted by Liberty Junction contained inconsistencies and failed to comply with certain requirements. The document further alleges DCAMM’s decision to announcement of the project award July 2, just before the Independence Day holiday, has the “unmistakable appearance of impropriety” because it was during the “lowest-attention window of the summer, when press, legislative, and public scrutiny are at their thinnest.”

In a joint press release from the plaintiffs, Balise said his priority is creating a better downtown. “My family has lived and worked in the Springfield area for four generations, and a new courthouse done the right way could be a generational boost for our downtown.” Meanwhile, Patel commented, “A nearly $2 billion, 40-year commitment has to be built on a foundation of trust and transparency. We’re asking the court to press pause so Springfield gets the fair, honest process it deserves.”

Reminder Publishing reached out to Barros for comment but did not receive a response by press time.

Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi weighed in on the situation. “I’ve said for years that Western Massachusetts needs a safe, modern courthouse, and I remain pleased this project is finally moving forward because

every day of delay means people continue working in a building that should have been replaced years ago,” Cocchi said. “Too many people have become sick, and too many members of our courthouse family have passed away after working in conditions that should never have existed.”

He continued, “At the same time, I understand why local developers are frustrated. This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in the third-largest city in Massachusetts, and I believe the Commonwealth should have placed greater emphasis on long-term civic and economic impact, not just cost. I respect the legal process and hope this is resolved quickly so we can finally give Western Massachusetts the courthouse it deserves.”

Built in 1971, the Roderick L. Ireland Courthouse serves the Springfield district, and hears cases from Springfield, West Springfield and Longmeadow.

Over the past decade, courthouse employees have advocated for a new court, saying environmental conditions, such as mold, have made the current courthouse a “sick building.” Personnel working at the courthouse have experienced a litany of illnesses, including cancers, respiratory conditions and five deaths due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gherig’s Disease.

Brew at The Zoo blends craft beer, conservation and community

SPRINGFIELD — For one afternoon each summer, The Zoo in Forest Park trades children’s laughter for the clink of tasting glasses as hundreds of adults gather to sip local craft beer while supporting animal care and conservation.

Now in its eighth year, Brew at The Zoo has become more than a popular summer tradition.

The Aug. 1 event is The Zoo in Forest Park’s largest annual fundraiser, helping provide daily care for more than 200 animals while supporting the zoo’s award-winning wildlife education programs throughout the community.

For Assistant Executive Director Gabry Tyson, the event also offers an opportunity to remind residents that the zoo depends heavily on community support.

“One thing many people don’t realize is that The Zoo in Forest Park is an independent, nonprofit organization located within a city-run park,” Tyson said. “We are not owned or operated by the city of Springfield, so we rely on the support of our community, guests and fundraising events

like Brew at The Zoo to allow us to continue to serve as a resource within our community and for animals in need.”

This year’s event, presented

by PeoplesBank, runs from 1:305 p.m. and features samples from more than 20 breweries, live music by Stillwater Band, three food trucks, two dessert vendors, a raffle and the chance to explore the zoo after hours.

While many fundraising events remain largely unchanged from year to year, Tyson said Brew at The Zoo has evolved steadily by listening to both guests and participating vendors.

“Brew at The Zoo has definitely evolved over the past eight years, and much of that growth has been driven by guest and vendor feedback, she said. “We’ve worked to enhance the experience while keeping the event true to what it is.”

Among the changes are an extended VIP hour, the addition of a VIP non-drinking ticket option and relocating the popular homebrew competition to a larger space that encourages more interaction among brewers and attendees.

Returning guests, Tyson said, can expect “all of their favorite

elements like great local breweries, live music, animal encounters and a fun afternoon supporting a great cause, along with the welcoming community atmosphere that has made Brew at The Zoo one of our signature events.”

A highlight of the event remains the VIP experience, which offers early admission, keeper talks and up-close encounters with ambassador animals, including birds, reptiles and small mammals. But Tyson emphasized those memorable moments never come at the expense of the animals’ well-being.

“The well-being of our animals will always be our highest priority,” she said. “While we love creating memorable experiences for our guests, every animal’s participation is completely voluntary.”

Before each encounter, animal care staff evaluate whether an ambassador animal is interested in participating.

“If an animal shows us through their behavior or body language that they aren’t interested in participating that day, we don’t force them,” Tyson said.

To reduce stress, the VIP experience is limited in length, and

the animals are handled by the keepers and educators who know them best. Tyson said the zoo also intentionally keeps participating species a surprise until the day of the event.

“This is also why we never announce in advance which animals will be participating in events or programs,” she said. “It allows our team to make decisions based solely on each animal’s behavior and well-being that day.”

Although Brew at The Zoo is centered on craft beer, Tyson hopes visitors leave with something far more lasting than memories of a favorite brew.

“We hope first-time guests leave with a new appreciation for both our animals and our mission,” she said. “Many people think of the zoo as a place primarily for children, but Brew at The Zoo gives adults an excuse to return to The Zoo either for the first time or for the first time in a long time.”

She added that the zoo hopes visitors rediscover their curiosity about the natural world.

“While they’re here, we hope they’re reminded that you’re never too old to learn something new.

If guests leave feeling more con-

nected to nature and inspired to become advocates for wildlife in their own backyard, then we’ve accomplished exactly what we set out to do.”

The event also features the return of its popular Homebrew Competition, where guests vote for their favorite amateur brew.

Among the returning participants are Nick and Maddy Bednaz, owners of StrongHaus Brewing, who have competed for more than five years.

“Brew at The Zoo is one of our favorite beer events,” the couple said in a statement. “The atmosphere is always fun and supportive; from sharing brewing tips with fellow homebrewers to getting feedback and chatting with the attendees.”

Tyson offered one final reminder for prospective attendees.

“Brew at The Zoo is strictly a 21 and up event,” she said.

“It’s the perfect reason to hire a babysitter and come explore nature, with a drink in your hand, of course.”

Brew at The Zoo will be held Saturday, Aug. 1. Advance tickets are required, and guests must present a valid photo ID for admission.

Women’s Fund of Western Mass. awards $195,000 to local organizations SPRINGFIELD — The Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts has announce $195,000 in general cycle grant awards to 17 organizations serving women, girls, and gender-diverse people across Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties in June.

The fund’s total fiscal year grant cycle, between August 2025 and June 2026, awarded $450,000 in community investment grants that were distributed throughout the four-county region.

The fund highlighted their 30year anniversary of grantmaking to reflect on decades-long part-

nerships throughout Western Massachusetts, while inviting new partners to expand its network. “This is an opportunity to reflect on 30 years of grantmaking,” says Kelley Bryant, director of grantmaking and impact at the fund. “The Community Investments committee, board, and staff sought to invest in close partners and new partners that sustain local communities and fuel gender equity in Western Massachusetts.”

Shortsleeve connects voter ID push to signature fraud cases

BOSTON — Following a ruling to disqualify a Republican candidate over allegations of signature fraud, GOP gubernatorial hopeful Brian Shortsleeve emphasized his support on July 14 for requiring voters to show identification at the polls.

Shortsleeve held a press conference outside the State House to emphasize his support of requiring identification to vote, couching the idea as a commonsense way to improve election integrity.

“Strong systems don’t wait for a crisis – they prevent one.

That’s exactly what voter ID does. It gives the public confidence that our elections are secure, fair, and worthy of the trust we can place in them,” Shortsleeve said. “And let’s be honest: public confidence matters when people lose faith in elections, everyone loses. Democrats lose.

Republicans lose. Most importantly, our democracy loses.”

In April, the House rejected a budget amendment sponsored by Billerica Republican Rep. Marc Lombardo to establish voter identification requirements similar to those Shortsleeve backs.

Rep. Rita Mendes, a Brockton Democrat who was born in Brazil, reflected on extra steps she took to secure an ID and cautioned the proposal could disproportionately affect voters in Gateway Cities like hers.

Shortsleeve also brought up allegations of signature fraud against two statewide Republican candidates, whom he didn’t explicitly name, during the press conference. The campaigns of Michael Walsh, who’s running for attorney general, and Anne Manning Martin, a GOP candidate for lieutenant governor, have been disrupted and derailed, respectively, due to objections stating they allegedly filed fraudulent signatures and did not receive the required 10,000 certified signatures to ensure ballot access.

A Supreme Judicial Court justice ruled on July 13 that Walsh can appear on the primary ballot, overturning a State Ballot Law Commission decision to disqualify the Lynnfield attorney from the ballot. An SJC judge ruled on July 14 that Manning Martin cannot appear on the ballot, finding there was “substantial, if not overwhelming evidence” that signatures she submitted were not signed

by the voters.

“While we’re talking about election integrity, let’s remember something else, integrity isn’t just about election day. It’s about every part of the process.

The people of Massachusetts watched one of the largest signature fraud scandals in recent state history unfold right here before our very eyes,” Shortsleeve said. “Fraudulent signatures were submitted to qualify a candidate for the ballot, that’s unacceptable and illegal. No matter whose campaign is involved, the standard cannot depend on whose side you’re on. The rules have to mean something.”

The allegations of signature fraud have exposed rifts within the state Republican Party — mainly among Shortsleeve’s campaign and the MassGOP and his primary contender, Mike Minogue.

Amy Carnevale, MassGOP chair, has celebrated the ruling to reinstate Walsh onto the ballot, saying it closed an “agonizing chapter in the nomination process for this critical office.”

“Voters deserve contested races, real choices, and confidence that election laws will be applied fairly and consistently.

Republicans across the Com-

monwealth are thankful that voters will have a clear choice of candidates come November,” Carnevale said in a statement on July 14.

Asked whether he thinks Walsh should not have been allowed back on the ballot, Shortsleeve said he was Walsh’s first donor and the only candidate “in this race who has sent him $1,000.” That’s because incumbent Campbell “has to go” and has been “a complete disaster for the state,” Shortsleeve said.

OCPF filings show Shortsleeve donated $1,000 to Campbell’s campaign in August 2021 and another $1,000 in March 2022. Shortsleeve also donated $1,000 to Walsh on Feb. 20, 2026.

“Brian never voted for Andrea Campbell and her performance in office validates the need for change so we can move forward with the audit of the Legislature and get focused on fighting crime and government corruption, and making [Massachusetts] more safe and affordable for working families,” Shortsleeve spokesperson Pat Nestor said in response to follow up questions about the candidate’s donations to Campbell.

low the ruling on Walsh’s case “closely,” adding there’s an investigation that he’s watching.

“I support decisions the courts have made, and we’re actively going to follow what is an open investigation,” he said.

Multiple district attorneys are investigating the allegations of fraudulent signatures, according to reporting by the Boston Globe.

Shortsleeve’s running mate, Shawn Oliver, lodged the initial complaint against Manning Martin that ultimately disqualified her from the ballot. Shortsleeve, asked about the SJC ruling tossing Manning Martin from the ballot, said his running mate “followed the rules” in filing the complaint. Oliver is now the sole GOP candidate for lieutenant governor.

“I am proud to stand tall with Shawn Oliver to fight for election integrity. Signature fraud is wrong anywhere it occurs,” Shortsleeve said.

Annual Mt. Carmel Society Italian Festa returns July 31

ENFIELD — Enfield’s Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Society is pulling out all the stops for its 100th annual Italian Festa, which takes place July 31 to Aug. 2.

This year’s three-day event includes homemade Italian food, a carnival, performances from local musicians, religious observations and special guest appearances from Deana Martin and Tony Orlando.

The Mt. Carmel Society was founded in 1926 by Italian immigrants that came to the Thompsonville section of Enfield.

“They came here, they were willing to work hard, they brought their culture, their faith in God and they wanted to be good Americans and their kids to be Americans, so they’d have opportunity,” Mt. Carmel Society President Carl Sferrazza said. “And they brought most of all, their faith in God, in this case the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.”

Sferrazza added that there is a connection between current and former members because they were their parents, aunts and uncles.

“We carry forth their memory and the values that they brought to America 100 years ago, which is our faith in God, our love of the United States, a love of family and friends, our food and our music,” he said. “And those values were what they built their life upon, the foundation 100 years ago, and I’d like to think that today they’re not antiquated ideals, that we still con-

Sferrazza said people can look forward to homemade Italian food throughout the festival.

“All the food that we serve here, there are no food trucks, we won’t allow it. We want to control the quality of the food as well as the price,” he said. “We know that we are catering to our family and friends and residents, so all the food here is prepared in our kitchens upstairs by the members of Mt. Carmel, so it’s not a food truck thing like the Big E. If I can brag a little bit, we are known for the quality of our Italian food.”

Sferrazza added that while attendees can expect traditional Italian food like spaghetti and meatballs, the society’s fried dough is “legendary.” For desserts, Sferrazza said people will be able to try food from “Cake Boss,” as the festival is partnering with Maurizio Belgiovine, the director of operations at Carlo’s Bakery.

The festival kicks off on Thursday, July 30, with a religious candlelight procession followed by free coffee, soda and Italian pastries.

On Friday, July 31, Johnny Six Guns will perform, Brat Pack will perform on July 2. Sferrazza said Saturday’s performance is the “pinnacle” with Martin’s appearance.

“Deana Martin, the daughter of Dean Martin, who performed here 2006 until 2016, every year, will be returning to perform that night.

Some of those celebrity friends include Mary Wilson, Bobby Rydell and Joe Piscopo. This year, Sferrazza said the celebrity friend is Tony Orlando, who is coming out of retirement for the festival.

Sferrazza said his wife suggested getting Martin to perform for the first time in 2006 after seeing she was going to perform at Foxwoods. He then picked up her book “Through my Father’s Eyes,” and found out that his favorite food was pasta fazool. His wife then made pasta fazool to bring to a meet and greet following her Foxwoods performance.

“I asked her if she’d come here and I explained that our resources are limited and her husband John stepped in and said it’s not always about the money, it’s about relationships. As I was leaving, John says, ‘you know maybe some time we can come,’ and Deana said, ‘nope, we’re going this year,’” he said.

On Sunday morning, there will be an outdoor mass at 9 a.m.

“This particular mass, because it’s 100 years, will be celebrated by the archbishop of Hartford.

The mass is a combination of a traditional mass, but some of the readings are in Italian and it’s just a great opportunity for people to come and see,” he said.

Following the mass, the society will take the statue of the Blessed Mother and put it on a float and process with the float through the streets of Thompsonville.

Alongside the procession, a Boston-based Italian marching band will perform.

While Sferrazza said Thompsonville initially was the Italian section of Enfield, he said the society continues the tradition in honor of the society’s founders and religious beliefs.

He added that preparations for the festival are done entirely by the members of the society.

“What you’ll see is, usually starting right after the Fourth of July, our members will get out of work, change into their clothes and come and we work together to make this happen,” he said.

Reflecting on the 100th anniversary, Sferrazza said he wanted to honor the society’s founders with the festival.

“It’s a celebration — not just of the current members — but we really want to pay homage and respect to our founders, pretty heroic people. Uneducated, but hard-working, brick layers, stone masons, carpenters, they left their country, they left their family behind to come to America, so their children could be Americans and have a better way of life,” he said.

“I think they’d be pretty proud that 100 years have gone by and the seeds that they planted back in 1926 continue today.”

Sferrazza said the society is a 501c3 nonprofit and they give back to the community by allowing people to use its field as a town park, offering its hall for the town to use for ceremonies and events, hosting a dinner fundraiser for Wreaths

Across America in Enfield and much more. The society also hosts a “Mt. Carmel style” pasta supper once a month.

“We’re very community oriented and that’s what we want to do is we want to be good neighbors and help all those different charities,” he said.

Everything the society does is catered to families.

“Coming into Mt. Carmel, I feel that time stands still, it still feels like may the 1950s, 1960s, by design,” he said. “We all know the reality of our world today, but it’s a reprieve from what’s going on outside, and you come here and you see your neighbors or people you went to high school with, you get a folding chair, you sit in front of the band stand, you eat some great food, it’s local, it’s safe, everything we do here is catered for families.”

Sferrazza said the festival is an opportunity for the public and members of the society to celebrate the society’s values.

“It’s a very special place, certainly for me and for a lot of people that grew up in town. For the people that didn’t grow up in town, it’s a great opportunity to come and try something here that’s a little different,” he said.

Tickets for the festival are $5, and children under 12 get in for free. The festival runs from 5-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 5-10 p.m. on Sunday.
