After a long offseason, college football will finally hit the airwaves Thursday night. Here’s a guide to the first games of 2015: Louisville vs. o. 6 Auburn | Georgia Dome - Atlanta, Georgia | 2:30 p.m. CT - CBS The Cardinals went 9-4 last year, had a stout defense and an average offense. The Cardinals still have a fourway QB race, according to Petrino, who believes there might be multiple QBs taking snaps on Saturday. The receiving corps will need some more production from junior James Quick to replace that of DeVante Parker, who averaged 12.6 yards per target last season.

Tigers are favor ite to unseat Alabama as SEC West champions. Junior Jeremy Johnson is already a Heisman candidate after stellar performances in his short time last year. If the Tigers’ defense holds consistently and gets the production from Johnson, there’s no reason why Malzahn & co. can’t challenge for a SEC West title.

For most of the season in Norman, it’s over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, sunny, and you’re surrounded with thousands of sweaty fans.

Therefore, you need something that shows your spirit, still looks cute, and most importantly, keeps you cool.

It’s that time of year again.

With a hint of fall in the air, gamedays are quickly approaching, and with that, The Daily has prepared a couple of recipes to make gameday even more delicious.

Walk and Talk Salad— a quick and easy salad inside a crust that you can take tailgating.

Ingredients: 1 8 oz. cream cheese 2 packages of crescent rolls 1/2 cup of sour cream 1/2 teaspoon of finely chopped dill

RECIPES FOR GAMEDAY SNACKS TO WHET YOUR APPETITE

rolls onto a lightly greased pizza pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 13 to 17 minutes.

When you take out the crust, let it cool completely.

Once it’s cool, add the dressing and spread it out over the crust top. Top it with your favorite veggies, like lettuce, tomatoes, onion, spinach, cherry tomatoes, black and green olives or shredded carrots.

Once decorated, sprinkle with fried bacon bits, cut into pizza slices and enjoy!

Take Velveeta, cut into quarter-inch chunks, place chunks into a bowl, add 1/4 cup of milk.

Microwave the mixture on high for three minutes.

Tear it along the perforated edge, place on a baking sheet at least one quarter of an inch apart.

t ’s time for football.

Tickets are becoming scarce, and with those dwindling numbers, it’s time to think about backup plans: Sports bars. Here are the five best places to watch the game without being in the stands.

O’Connell’s Irish Pub and Grille — Not only is this a great place to party on St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s also a great place near campus to watch Saturday night football games. However, there are only a few TVs to watch the games, and it’s generally packed. That being said, it’s also appealing to fans’ stomachs, with great football-day menu items ranging from burgers and fries to drinks.

O’Connell’s is also one of the places that has been with the Sooners for a long time, dating back to the ‘80s at least.

There are pictures of celebrities with Sooner memorabilia along the walls, and it’s across the street from spirit shops on Campus Corner.

Plus, when the Sooners are home, it’s so close to the

stadium that people will be able to hear the cheers from their seats.

Diamond Dawgs — Although it is a baseball-oriented atmosphere, Diamond Dawgs can be a g re a t p l a c e t o w a t c h Saturday night games. There are pictures on the walls, including one of Barry Switzer.

It’s also close to campus, so that means people don’t have too far to go for some good food and a lively scene.

Sooner Legends Inn and Suites’ Sports Bar — This sports bar, attached to a hotel and restaurant, is a little pricier than the others listed, but it’s worth it to watch the Sooners score a touchdown on its 10-foot TV. Patrons are also surrounded by Sooner memorabilia, including photos of past football players, signed footballs from past games and upside down longhorn heads. Sooner Legends is also known for its barbecue, smoked meat and locally raised steaks. Also available are pool tables and a patio with two TVs. After the game, fans will be able to celebrate what hopefully is a Sooner win with karaoke.

Brothers Eatery and Pub — One of the longest standing bars around Norman, since the 1980s, Brothers offers 15 TVs and a special gameday menu for football

nights. The menu includes chips and queso, burgers and other popular gameday foods. Patrons should get to the restaurant early for later football games because it gets busy around 2 p.m., said Keith Allen, the owner of the bar. Brothers provides good food, history and a comfortable environment for the Saturday night lights.

Buffalo Wild Wings — Finally, there’s the classic Buffalo Wild Wings. There’s plenty of room to watch the Saturday night lights and the modern-day gladiators flood the field. There are plenty of TVs to watch — around 64 between the dining area and the bar — and if anyone gets curious about an MMA fight or OSU game that happens to be at the same time, chances are it’s on another screen. With copious TVs, delicious food and drinks, eyes and stomachs will never go hungry.

Baker Mayfield grew up in a shadow — not just a shadow of those who came before him but of what he was supposed to be.

The first shadow Mayfield stepped into was Garrett Gilbert’s. Gilbert graduated from Lake Travis High School in 2009 as a five-star quarterback and one of the best division one prospects in recent memory. Gilbert eventually signed with Texas, but while he was getting his feet wet in Mack Brown’s offense, Baker Mayfield was splitting time on Lake Travis’ freshman squad.

When Mayfield first walked into Lake Travis in 2009 on what was surely a hot, August day in Austin, Texas, he stood just 5-foot-5 and only weighed about 130 pounds.

Considering Gilbert’s 6-foot-4, 205 pound frame, Mayfield was in the shadow of, quite literally, one of the giants at Lake Travis — someone that Mayfield would hope to replace some day.

“Physically, Baker was a late developer,” Lake Travis coach Hank Carter said. “He always felt like he had to prove something to everybody and to himself because of his size.”

That chip on his shoulder is something that Mayfield has had his entire life, according to Carter. It’s what caused him to leave Lubbock to pursue the starting job at Oklahoma after being disrespected by the Texas Tech coaching staff.

But perhaps more importantly, in hindsight, it’s what caused him to end up as a walk-on at Texas Tech in the first place.

“When college coaches come in and ask about our players, we’re honest with them because we need to keep our credibility,” Carter said. “We told them ‘this kid is a freakin’ stud and he can play the game of football.’”

But no one was buying the stock of Mayfield as a power-conference quarterback. He earned just a handful of division-one offers out of high school and only one, Washington State, was from a power-five conference.

Mayfield decided he could do better.

“I know he saw Texas Tech was running a similar offense (to Lake Travis) and viewed it as a place he could go earn a scholarship and have success at,” Carter said of Mayfield’s decision to forego several full-ride offers.

Texas Tech would eventually give Mayfield the opportunity to do what Florida Atlantic and Rice couldn’t: the chance to finally stand tall and break through the shadow of the giants that once towered over him.

Leadership

In December 2014, while Mayfield was home for winter break, he received a Facebook notification from someone in Carter’s immediate family.

It was an invitation for Carter’s nephew’s birthday

party later in the week. Rather than ignoring the message, Mayfield decided to attend as a surprise to his former coach and his family.

“That’s the type of individual he is and why his teammates gravitate towards him,” Carter said.

While that event happened after Mayfield was already on campus in Norman, his personality and leadership traits developed far earlier.

When Mayfield considered joining Texas Tech as a walkon, he wasn’t alone. His best friend from high school, Zach Austin, was a wide receiver at Lake Travis and was also looking for a collegiate

home.

Austin, now on scholarship for the Red Raiders according to Carter, has stuck with it in Lubbock, but it wasn’t without the help of Mayfield.

Carter says that Mayfield honed in on his leadership abilities with Austin, they kept each other accountable on and off the field in high school.

That relationship came to a halt, at least on the field, when Mayfield left Texas Tech for OU two seasons ago.

But his attitude and willingness to help those around him lingered.

“When he comes back (home) in the summertime, he does everything he can to rub off on the kids that are still at Lake Travis,” Carter said. “He’s out there coaching up kids that are playing seven-on-seven, energetic as ever.”

“Baker has never lost that ‘one of the guys’ feeling,” he said.

Home

Mayfield’s attitude and charisma translated very well at OU early on. Teammates Charles Tapper and Zack Sanchez both insisted Mayfield was accepted as a member of the team from the beginning.

Fast forward to the first week of classes this fall. Mayfield is seated next to Sanchez in a lecture hall full of students, oblivious to the verbal blows that the two exchange.

“He’s going to talk trash to me, and I’m going to talk trash to him on a daily basis, no matter what we’re doing,” Sanchez said. “He’s just a really funny dude to be around.”

In a short time, Mayfield has already built up a reputation for having a “sharp tongue” as his offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley puts it. It comes with the territory, growing up as an OU fan in Austin, Texas.

“He does a good job of relating to different kinds of people, which is important at that position,” Riley said. “There’s an edge about him and an aggressiveness that he has. It’s how he carries himself every day.”

Shortly after Mayfield’s class with Sanchez last Monday, OU announced he would be the starting quarterback.

It meant he had accomplished what many told him he couldn’t do, and it gave him validation for the chip on his shoulder he developed as a 130-pound freshman at Lake Travis.

“That’s just how I grew up,” Mayfield said plainly. “I’ve always had that chip on my shoulder when people doubted me.”

“It developed when I was in high school and it’s carried on since then,” he said.

Mayfield’s own high school coach admitted to being skeptical of him as a prospect at one point in time.

“His first two years of high school, I had my doubts,” Carter recalled. “We knew he had to grow or he wasn’t going to be able to make it.”

Mayfield would eventually develop into a star at Lake Travis, wining 25 games and a state championship in two seasons as Carter’s quarterback.

Fortunately for Mayfield, he did grow. Mayfield is now listed at 6-foot-1, 209 pounds on the official team roster, and he developed into a star at Lake Travis.

And that proverbial chip on his shoulder? That’s grown, too.

“I think Baker lives with a chip on his shoulder and carries it on the field,” center Ty Darlington remarked.

While that may be the case, it’s no longer necessary.

When Mayfield steps on to the field against Akron for the first time as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback, he’ll be under the lights and finally out of the shadow that used to define him.

ameday parking and tailgating will be a little different for OU’s first home game tomorrow and the rest of the football season; arriving early will be the key to a successful gameday experience.

The construction of the Residential Colleges and Jenkins parking garage will

eliminate the possibility of previous gameday parking.

Therefore, tailgating may prove to be more difficult this season than in years past.

Vicky Holland, the marketing manager for OU’s Parking and Transportation Services, said tailgating across from Headington Hall around the fence of

the Residential Colleges construction is allowed.

However, those who wish to tailgate there will have to carry their belongings from their cars parked in a different location.

James Chansombat, a public relations junior, said he tailgates with his fraternity, Lambda Phi Epsilon, during home games.

Chansombat said the fraternity has come up with a few alternative tailgating strategies due to the current construction.

Chansombat said Lambda plans to set up behind the Duck Pond instead of behind the Huston Huffman Fitness Center this year.

“We will probably send a brother out super early, eight or nine in the morning, just to grab a tent space,” he said. “If we can’t find a space we’ll likely do it at the house, but there will definitely be a lot of competition this year for spaces.”

Sooner Fan Fest could be an alternative option for tailgaters, Holland said. It

opens three hours before each home game, includes food and games and will be held at the Mosier Indoor Athletic Facility across from McCasland Field House.

Gameday parking, on the other hand, will never be easy in Norman with nearly 100,000 fans streaming in.

“Even though we are building a garage for 1,200 people, in the grand scheme of things, 1,200 isn’t a lot,” Holland said.

Arriving to campus early and parking at Llyod Noble Center is the least expensive and easiest way to get to campus, Holland said.

Jaclyn Knierim, a music education junior, lives near campus. Charging money

for parking in a front yard is easy for fans and a way to make some quick cash, she said.

“It’s a less than a mile from campus, quicker to get in and out of the stadium and it’s cheaper a lot of times too,” Knierim said.

“We charge $20 and can only fit two cars, but some houses build lots in their backyards and can fit up to six spots.”

Other on-campus parking options are pay-topark lots for $25 a space, reserving a space with OU Transportation Services in advance, or parking behind Dale Hall if you hold a valid permit and are a student or faculty member at OU.
