AN ADVENTURE There are many unique foods in Norman, as long as you know where to look. story by Rachel Schaub

Fried Oreos from Diamond Dawgs Diamond Dawgs offers the taste of a state fair on Campus Corner with their deep fried Oreos. These cookies are dipped in batter and fried, creating a unique dessert. Deep Fried Oreos come in servings of three, so bring a friend or a big appetite!

Donut Milkshake from Hurts Donut Hurts Donut on Campus Corner is home to many interesting donut flavors, but they take their pastries a step further with their donut milkshakes. You can choose any flavor donut, ranging from a caramel and cinnamon Jesus donut to sugary Cereal Killer donuts, they mix an entire donut into the milkshake. As if that’s not enough, they top the milkshake with another donut of the same flavor.

Zucchini Pancakes from Lemon Tree Lemon Tree, located on Main Street, boasts an original take on vegetables.

Their zucchini pancake combines zucchini, feta cheese, carrots and spices with a topping of yogurt sauce. These pancakes combine healthy food with unique spices, creating a dish that is both flavorful and interesting.

Fried Frog Legs from Asian Buffet For the adventurous eater, Asian Buffet may be the place to go. Their buffet carries fried frog legs, a food considered by many to be one of the weirdest in Norman.

What is the weirdest food you’ve had in Norman?

“I would say the weirdest food I’ve had in Norman would be some of the donuts from Hurts Donuts. Some of those are really unique concoctions!”

Hideaway Special from Hideaway Pizza

If you can never decide what toppings to put on your pizza, the Hideaway Special from Hideaway Pizza might be for you. Each slice of this pizza has a different topping. Vegetables cover half of the slices, while meat covers the other.

“The weirdest thing I probably ate was one of those drinks from tea cafe that has those squishy balls in the bottom of it.”

Oink & Moo Burger from Land Run Land Run’s menu hosts a burger straight from the dreams of meat lovers.

The Oink & Moo Burger is a beef patty topped with both grilled hot links and smoked pulled pork. This burger, which comes with barbecue sauce, puts an entire cookout on one plate.

“I haven’t eaten a lot of weird things here. Probably the sweet potato pancakes at Syrup. They’re really good though! The icing makes them perfect.”

“The weirdest thing I’ve eaten in Norman are these things called Calf Fries. Basically they’re just bull testicles. I don’t remember where I got them from but it was just weird.”

NORMAN FOOD bucket list story by Torri Sperry

1. The Diner Since the 1950’s, The Diner has been a go-to stop to experience 50’s style dining. The menu is comprised of classic American and Tex-Mex.

2. Othello’s For almost four decades, Othello’s has been a Norman landmark on Campus Corner. It’s known for its affordability and authentic Italian dishes.

4. Victoria’s Pasta Shop

Located on West Lindsey, this 50’s style drive-in offers a unique twist on fast food and specialty drinks. They are also home to the “Sprittle,” a famous drink for locals that combines Sprite and Skittles.

Victoria’s is a locally owned and operated Pasta shop located off Campus Corner. The menu offers a variety of pastas and is most famously known for its “Pink Sauce.”

5. The Mont

6. TEA Café

The Mont is nestled behind the train tracks at the intersection of Boyd and Classen, and is widely appreciated for their patio dining. Locals claim that every college student has to try their signature drink, “The Swirl,” during their time in Norman.

7. Midway Deli

Since the 1950s, Midway Deli has been a staple for college students and the entire Norman community.

The old-fashioned deli is located behind residential streets on the corner of Eufaula and Chautauqua.

TEA Café is an Asian Fusion restaurant located on campus corner. Known specially for their signature drinks, this spot has become one of the top destinations for OU students.

8. Donut King Donut King is located on West Lindsey and offers a variety of donuts, hot dogs and milkshakes. Locals can indulge in Donut King 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and always expect to see a familiar face.

3 What Norman restaurant is on your bucket list?

“I really want to try Blu on Crawford. I’ve heard it’s really nice and they have great drinks. I just haven’t had a chance to go yet.”

-Alic Long, communication junior “There are a few on my bucket list I haven’t gone to in the 20 years I’ve lived here, but the main one would be The Diner. I hear it’s absolutely incredible and just a really cool atmosphere. I’m all about the whole in the wall restaurants.”

–Alix Yaw, religious studies sophomore “I really want to try Tarahumara’s Mexican Café. Because I was born and raised in Texas, I’m always wary of trying Mexican food in other states besides Texas but I’ve heard there’s never a wait and that the food is delicious.”

–Courtney Brady, public relations sophomore “I’d like to try Grey Owl Coffee. I love cute little coffee shops. They’re so relaxed and homey. I’ve lived in Norman my whole life but I just haven’t had the time yet to drop in, although everything I’ve heard has been great.”

What is your favorite place to have delivered?

“My favorite delivery restaurant is Papa John’s.

The staff always greets me with interest and joy and the food has always been what was expected. I’ve never had a late or wrong order.

They’re the best because they have a standard of consistency most places can’t match.”

If you’re looking to start your day off right with a big meal in the morning, try Ozzie’s Diner. Located in the Max Westheimer Airport, this diner offers all-you-can-eat plates of breakfast food at reasonable prices.

Home of the Vegetarians Coolgreens is local, fresh, and full of various, healthy vegetarian dishes. Instead of being limited to a salad at many regular restaurants, you’ll have options ranging from wraps to pizza.

Your meat-loving friends will have numerous selections as well, and they may thank you for offering a healthy alternative to dining out.

Study Spots and Espresso Shots Finding a place for a study group to meet in Norman can be difficult. Gray Owl Coffee offers great drinks, ample space and a good atmosphere for a group to work together in. Gray Owl is perfect for studying in groups or alone, and their coffee makes homework a little less of a chore.

bites Romance on a Budget If you’re looking for a nice place to take a date, but don’t want to break your budget, Sergio’s Italian Bistro provides the ideal experience.

Conveniently located on Gray Street, it isn’t far from campus, but avoids the hustle and bustle of campus corner. Its peaceful atmosphere and friendly wait staff will make the night unforgettable. They have a wide variety of menu options including pastas, pizzas, salads, sandwiches, soups, seafood and several other authentic Italian specialties. Sergio’s makes it possible to enjoy a nice Italian dinner, while keeping costs low.

Don’t Miss the Game For many avid football fans who don’t want to miss the big game but can’t travel to every away game, O’Connell’s is the perfect game day destination. Students can enjoy the camaraderie of supporting their team with the presence oflike-minded sports fans without driving far or paying for tickets. O’Connell’s is located in Campus Corner and offers a variety of salads, burgers, sandwiches and other typical DzDzgame daydzdz meals. In addition to their food, they provide a large drink selection and frequently offer specials and price reductions on their burgers, wings and beer. OU students can also receive up to a 20% discount on certain weeknights.

“Crooked Crust is great and is open until 3 AM on some nights.
