wo College Football Playoff dark horses match up in an early-season tilt.

Notre Dame, coming off a dramatic victory over Virginia last week, finds itself injury-laden at skill positions with starting QB Malik Zaire and RB Tarean Folston both out for the season. The Irish still have plenty of weapons, including RB C.J. Prosise who’s put up a 6.8 rushing yards per attempt average. If the Irish can help ease new starting QB DeShone Kizer into his role, they still have a chance.

Georgia Tech is coming in as a forgotten ACC power whose run-heavy offense has already amassed over 900 rushing yards after just two games. Although against inferior competition, the Yellow Jackets have scored at least 65 points in both games, as well as only allowing 16 total points. Everyone knows they’re going to run the ball, but no one can seem to figure out how to stop it. The Irish will have their hands full.

he Crimson Tide will be the favorite Saturday night in Tuscaloosa, and the main reason for this might be because they’ll be looking for revenge against the team that beat them last season.

The Tide look solid so far this season, with a nice victory against No. 23 Wisconsin at a neutral site to open the season. RB Derrick Henry looks stout so far, with a 7.8 yards per rush average.

Alabama’s defense has been tough once again and Ole Miss will need to continue

to light it up offensively to have a chance in this one.

The Ole Miss Rebels have been thus far outstanding offensively. They’ve scored over 70 points in both of their games, outscoring teams 149-24 in doing so. New QB Chad Kelly has been effective this season, posting a 234.0 passer rating, and RB Jaylen Walton shined last week. All that being said, UT-Martin and Fresno State are no Alabama and their true ability has yet to be seen.

The Tigers’ first game of year was one of the nation’s most difficult, having to face No. 25 Mississippi State on the road.

The Tigers hung on for a 21-19 win as the Bulldogs missed a long field goal as time expired. It’s hard to hold much against Les Miles’ squad as they didn’t have the benefit of a tune-up game as their first against McNeese State was rained out. Leonard Fournette (159 yards and 3 TDs) had a

stand-out game and might actually be worth all the hype.

The Auburn Tigers needed overtime on Saturday to shake FCS opponent Jacksonville State 27-20. The Tigers trailed for most of the second half, but benefitted from Jacksonville State’s inability to milk the clock, allowing the then sixthranked Tigers to force overtime. Auburn’s Heisman hopeful Jeremy Johnson has thrown five interceptions this season and looks like anything but the nation’s best player.

CLA might not have expected BYU to be ranked when it came time to play them, but after back-to-back Hail Mary victories against Nebraska and Boise State, the Cougars have proven to be a formidable foe.

UCLA QB Josh Rosen has already emerged as a freshman Heisman candidate after amassing 574 yards through two games. The Bruin’s defense has looked effective, allowing just 19 points in two games, including a 37-3 victory last weekend in Las Vegas. UCLA will have a nice test in BYU as they try to maintain success

after former QB Brett Hundley’s NFL departure.

The Cougars should be 0-2 right now, but thanks to some magic and lackluster defense, they’re 2-0 and riding high.

Last week, BYU took down Boise State in Provo after QB Tanner Mangum threw a 35-yard prayer with less than a minute remaining on fourth down that landed in WR Mitchell Juergens’ hands to give the Cougars the win. They continue an early string of tough opposition as they head to Los Angeles Saturday night.

ominique Alexander didn’t have much to say about playing against his brother.

When Derrick, a senior linebacker two years older than Dominique, travels to Norman with Tulsa to take on Oklahoma Saturday, it will mark the third time the Alexanders have taken the field against each other as Division I athletes.

“It’s a great thing for family — just to be able to go against each other,” Dominique said. “But it’s not like we go against each other ever. (I) just hope he does a great job.

He hopes I do a great job.”

Derrick said much of the same.

“Honestly, it just, it seems like it’s almost just a coincidence,” the Golden Hurricane defensive end said. “It’d be different if he played offense, and I actually got a chance to hit him and stuff … I really don’t think about it as a different game. It’s cool to play against him. It’s cool to have a brother that plays on that team. We play against them, and other than that, that’s about it.”

The lack of excitement from the two men at the center of one of this week’s most intriguing story lines is not too surprising. The two won’t see the field at the same time, so neither will have the chance to actually compete against the other. There will be no brother versus brother moment.

Take things back a few years, however, and the Alexanders have a little more to say.

It wasn’t too long ago that Derrick and Dominique played side by side, literally, at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Being so close to his brother helped Dominique through the recruiting process his senior year, and his early exposure to a Division I college workout regimen made for a smoother transition when he left for OU. Derrick may have led by example, but Dominique didn’t stop when his example left for school.

“Dominique started catching on,” Derrick said. “And then all the sudden when I’m off to college, Dominique has like dumbbells.

He like takes the dumbbells from the high school — has them at the house — and like a whole barbell. He has the barbell at his house, and he was doing like push-ups and curls, triceps. So he was — that dude, man.

I’m glad I (helped), but Dominique definitely took some on his own too.”

As Derrick wraps up his college career he has nothing but admiration for his brother and what he has been able to accomplish.

He may not be in the same room as him, encouraging him to do push ups at 2 a.m., but he still pays attention like he did five years ago when they lined up just yards apart at game time.

“Dominique’s a good kid. He’s real smart,” Derrick said. “Any time he did mess up he’d be hard headed for a little bit, but he found his way.”

As far as Dominique is concerned, he wouldn’t be what he is today — a imposing menace to Oklahoma’s opponents — without Derrick’s influence.

“He really — everything,” Dominique said. “For me to be where I’m at — he’s really the reason.”

Oklahoma and Tulsa both head into this week’s matchup at 2-0 for the first time since 2009. The Golden Hurricane appears rejuvenated under new head coach Phillip Montgomery and could pose a much greater threat to the Sooners than in past seasons.

QUARTERBACK Baker Mayfield didn’t have a Heisman-level game

against Tennessee, but he had a Heisman moment.

Actually, he had several. The passing game should be there for Mayfield against Tulsa this week, but now we know that he can make plays with his legs when he needs to.

For Tulsa, Dane Evans won the starting QB job over true freshman Chad President and he hasn’t disappointed. Evans has 745 yards and four touchdowns in his two starts, torching both Florida Atlantic and New Mexico.

RUNNING BACKS AND RECEIVERS Oklahoma’s depth at these positions would land it

amongst the top programs in the country, but Tulsa isn’t lacking in talent. Led by senior Zack Langer and sophomore D’Angelo Brewer in the backfield, Tulsa has already amassed 473 yards and six scores on the ground.

DEFENSIVE FRONT

Against Tulsa, OU will likely go back to a nickel defense, as opposed to the 3-4 look that it featured in Knoxville.

Going from four defensive backs to five likely means that linebacker Devante Bond won’t be on the field as much. He’ll still have an impact but maybe not as much as he did against Tennessee.

Tulsa returns experience on its defensive line with All-AAC performer Derek Alexander and two-year starter Derrick Luetjen. At linebacker, Tulsa will rely on Trent Martin, Matt Linscott and Craig Suits.
