Raising Cane’s wrecks records First year numbers beat out Chick-fil-A’s RYAN BLACKBURN Campus Reporter

A year into Raising Cane’s tenure on campus, the franchise has made over $135,000 for OU and has opened a new location in west Norman.

In its first year, Raising Canes has made $135,625.08 for the university, according to its statement of operations and budget comparisons.

There were no available records for Raising Canes’ individual profits, because OU doesn’t maintain those records.

In their first years on campus Burger King and Chickfil-A made significantly less profit for the university.

Burger King made $45,428.55 for OU and Chickfil-A made $25,652.67, according to requested records.

Raising Cane’s made almost 200 percent more than Burger King did during its first year in 1997 and almost 430 percent more than Chickfil-A in 1994.

While the profits do seem to be significantly more, if you account for inflation, using the 2012 value of money, Burger King made $64,537.30 and Chick-fil-A made $36,443.03.

Even accounting for inflation, Raising Cane’s made about 110 percent more than Burger King and about 272 p ercent more than Chick-fil-A. Adding to these profits, Raising Cane’s remained open this summer, with shorter summer hours, to accommodate summer session students, as well as the campers on campus this summer.

“We’ve been slow this summer, but campers, students, parents and faculty have been in to eat,” said Chris Reece, Raising Canes shift manager.

Starting Aug. 5, the campus location will be back to normal hours, staying open until midnight or later, Reece said.

The profits made at the OU location didn’t necessarily enable Norman Raising Cane’s owner Chad Achord to open a new location in west Norman, he said.

“The new location is a culmination of everything really,” he said.

A year into the new location, Achord is happy with how things are going at the campus location and grateful for the support of the OU community, he said.

“A year in, it’s been a wonderful experience,” he said.

“We’re very thankful and ready for the years to come.”

At least one student seems to happy about Raising Cane’s on campus, even if he hasn’t been able to get his late-night fix this summer.

“The [campus] location is very convenient. I’ve been quite a few times,” advertising senior Clayton Hooper said. “It’s a great option on campus, though I wish they were still open late. I am ready for some late night Cane’s,” Hooper said.

This support system is comprised of Sooners who are passionate about welcoming new students to campus and into the OU family.

After an application and interview process, prospective small group leaders are chosen and assigned groups to mentor.

“My goal as a small group leader is to make a connection with my campers,” Maez said. “So if they ever need help with anything they already have a student who can advise them in the best way possible.”

Two OU faculty members have received honors from The Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society for distinguished contributions to higher education.

Nancy Mergler, senior vice president and provost, and chemistry professor Donna Nelson were announced as inductees to the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame for outstanding service to higher education in Oklahoma, according to the press release.

Nelson said in an email she was pleased to receive the news about her induction a few weeks ago.

“I am delighted to receive this honor,” NANCY she said.

Nelson attributes this success in part to MERGLER her efforts to promote diversity in the sciences, for the sake of America’s scientific readiness.

“Through personal experience, I have learned that gender, race and ethnicity matters,” she said. “At the beginning of my career, as a female professor going into a physical science, it wasn’t easy, and I encountered challenges that weren’t only about chemistry,” she said.

She cites research as being her favorite professional activity.

“While I love the diversity of the activities, my favorite area has been research and writing for peer-reviewed publications,” she said. “It has given me real personal pleasure to know that I have contributed to our world’s knowledge in organic chemistry, so that others can build upon my contributions, as I have built on those DONNA who came before me.”

NELSON Mergler was unavailable for comment on her induction.

The formal induction ceremony and banquet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2013 at the Jim Thorpe Museum in Oklahoma City, according to the press release.

As new students flood the lawns of OU donning crimson shirts, Camp Crimson leaders strive to welcome incoming freshmen with friendly faces and the OU experience.

Will Maez, mechanical engineering junior, is one of the faces of Camp Crimson this summer.

Working alongside two other small group leaders, Maez was in charge of a group of about 22 new students, getting to know and guide them as they became familiar with fellow Sooners.

As a two-year member of the Dean’s Leadership Council, Maez has had an ongoing passion for leadership throughout his time at

OU. D e a n ’s L e a d e r s h i p Council members are selected through an application process, and mentor students within the engineering department, he said.

In addition to prior experience with student mentoring, Maez said he became interested in helping with Camp Crimson to set an example for incoming freshmen.

“It’s important to show them you can relate to them, so they know they’re not alone,” Maez said.

On a campus so spacious and with so many organizations with which to get involved, Maez said it is important freshman know they aren’t the only ones that can feel overwhelmed.

ordered “Pancetta Wrapped Chicken Breast” for $14. Our waiter pointed out that the dishes didn’t come with a side and that the sides were big enough to share, so we also ordered “Pancetta Mac and Cheese” at his suggestion.

While waiting for our food to arrive, I took a moment to observe the patrons of the new restaurant. From what I could tell, most of the visitors were families. Typical college students were in

sparse supply, which made sense given the price of a meal at Scratch. You could eat for under $20, but you might go home a little hungry.

My thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of our food, and I’ll admit I was pleasantly surprised. My “Grilled Chicken on Whole Wheat Bun” might be the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. The addition of caramelized onions and oven roasted tomatoes to a traditional chicken sandwich was a great success. My

date and I both agreed the “Pancetta Mac and Cheese” was delicious as well. The pasta was thick with cheese, pancetta and crunchy breadcrumbs.

The least impressive of our dishes was the “Pancetta Wrapped Chicken Breast.”

We both agreed that it was tasty, but perhaps not worth $14 — especially since it didn’t even come with a side.

At the end of our meal, the waiter brought us the check, which totaled to around $46 with tip. This might be a reasonable amount for a

nice date night, but for your average starving college student, Scratch may be a rare treat. Was Scratch good?

Absolutely. Was it overpriced? Probably.

All in all, it seems Scratch fits right where it needs to be — on Main Street. I predict it will be a favorite with locals, but perhaps not the college crowd that frequents Campus Corner.

Oklahoma’s defense under major scrutiny Sooners look to improve this season

As a defensive back at Iowa in the late 70s and early 80s, Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops knows a thing or two about running an effective and successful defense.

But that hasn’t been the case for Stoops and the Sooners the past few years.

Since 2005, Oklahoma has given up 14 40-plus point games. From 1999 — Stoops’ first year as the team’s coach — to 2004, OU didn’t allow a single 40-point game.

Now, brother Mike Stoops is entering his second season with the Sooners. The defensive-minded sibling duo will look to take control of one of the nation’s top defenses.

“We’ve gone about our business of coaching and trying to be great on defense, and the way we work it, the same way a year ago as we did back in ’99 and 2000, in years where we’ve had great defenses,” Bob Stoops said Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days.

Four starters return on a defensive unit that already was a little shaky last season.

Senior defensive back Aaron Colvin anchors the defense that is looking for answers.

“This offseason, we’ve focused on finishing; so when that translates to the fourth quarter, we’ll finish,” Colvin said. “Personally, I want to see the defense go out there and be more physical. I want to see us more consistent. I just want to see us get back to that mindset of having that chip on our shoulder and

going out there and dominating every offense.”

Speculations were the team would switch to a 3-4 defense from a 4-3 package, but those thoughts have diminished since, as the team will stick to a traditional fourman front.

Stoops believes the quality of quarterbacks in the league is a factor of the recent

decline in their quality of defense.

“I think you do have to give a little bit of credit to every year, it seems, in our league there’s some incredible quarterbacks,” he said.

“You see a good number of them littered throughout the NFL once they leave here.

So, that always — to me — the better the quarterback, whether it’s in the NFL or in college football, the harder they are to stop.”

One top concern for Oklahoma is its front seven.

The Sooners lost seven guys from last year, so inexperience will play a large factor this year.

“We do feel we have quality players and a good number of them up there in the defensive line, so those guys have to continue to develop, and they’re working hard

at it,” Stoops said. “I believe we’ll have a chance to be a good, solid unit up there.

There’s good talent in those positions.”

Another main concern for the defense is the amount of rushing yards it allowed. Last season, Oklahoma allowed nearly 2,500 rushing yards, ranking ninth in the Big 12.

That’s definitely not something Stoops is satisfied with, but he believes there’s still room for hope.

“It’s still a work inwprogress,” Stoops said.

“Definitely, in some of our schemes a year ago, we were more coverage conscious, and it hurt us in the run game. [The defense] is working hard at it, so I believe we have a chance to make improvement there.”

Changes will be made, there’s no escaping that ;

it’s inevitable. But when and how are the two questions being asked. What will Stoops pull out of his hat this time?

“In the end, we’ll have to make some adjustments there,” he said. “And personnel-wise, we do lose quite a few guys, but we are very excited about the talent and ability of some of the young

players coming up that we’re still developing, still polishing, still trying to improve skills.”

The quarterback battle will continue into fall camp. No matter the starter, at least one other quarterback will see the field.

The SEC has its defense.

The Pac 12 has its speed. The Big 10 has its size. And the Big 12 has its quarterbacks.

Well, the Big 12 usually does.

Coming into the Big 12 Media Days on Monday and Tuesday, many teams still were having open competitions for the starting quarterback positions.

Defending co-Big 12 champions Kansas State is looking to replace former Heisman hopeful Collin Klein. Oklahoma State, who was picked to win the conference, has had its headlines of problems with its quarterback situation and may not know whom the starter will be until after the opening game.

And the list goes on. In fact, far more mascots were paraded around the Omni Hotel than starting quarterbacks did.

Only two teams, Texas and Kansas, brought a quarterback. One of those two, Kansas senior quarterback Jake Heap, claimed the quarterback battles could provide for a more open league — something that’ll benefit a struggling program like Kansas.

“I think it’s an opportunity for a lot of unproven guys to go out there and show what they’re capable of,” he said.

“It makes for a really exciting season. You don’t know who’ll come out on top, and it’s a really wide open season.”

After a good showing in the spring game, most had predicted Bell to be named to the starting job. No matter who recieves the starting job, expect to see packages involving two, if not all three of the quarterback candidates. This quarterback battle is not singular to OU; most teams in the league have yet to name their starter.

being put on display for local and national media is not too concerning, though. Most teams have solid options; the main issue will be how the chosen few react once they line up under center Aug. 31.

Fo r O k la h o ma, t h o s e options are clear and well known. For some people, as proved by the first question coach Bob Stoops fielded Tuesday, junior dual-threat quarterback Blake Bell is the man.

But Stoops shot down the notion as quickly as it was

made, leaving the door wide open for the idea sophomore Kendal Thompson and redshirt freshman Trevor Knight are right in the hunt.

“You’re kind of making assumptions if you think (Bell is) the guy right now,” Stoops said. We’ve got a number of guys in there in competition with (Bell) that are doing really well.”

So, if the assumption Bell will be the starting quarterback still is, at this point, an assumption, what other assumptions should everyone

not setting the depth chart make?

Play two quarterbacks?

How about all three?

Although Stoops did not hint at what’s going to happen in the fall, he kept open the idea of not limiting the offense to just Bell. If he named the starter, Thompson or Knight could be used as a pseudo-Belldozer option basically running the same type of offense Bell did the last two years but with more speed.

“The thing about you (putting) Kendal or Trevor back

there to run it, they’re faster,” Stoops said. “So you’ve got more options there of what you’re able to do with them.

Or if they happen to hit the crease, they’re not likely to be caught very soon.

“So there’s some of that to consider, and it gives (Bell) a break or gives him an opportunity to avoid … too many hits.”

And seeing that quicker change of pace option for the younger two quarterbacks would not be much of a surprise to those in the locker

room, senior offensive lineman Gabe Ikard said.

“Kendal, Trevor and Blake are all very talented football players that have similar skills, but each one of them does something better than the other one does,” he said. “Whether coach (Josh Heupel) develops new packages for each of them or for two of them, I foresee at least two or even all three getting on the field in some capacity because of how talented they are.”

Whoever wins OU’s quarterback battle is going to be the one who throws the ball the best — that goes without question — but he will have to be able to put up good numbers in the running game.

But as the old adage goes: If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have one.

The Sooners have runners who can throw; Bell, Thompson and Knight proved that in the Red-White spring game. Now at least one of the three needs to prove he can be a quarterback, a field general and a leader; any combination of the three will suffice.
