PR TECT Y URSELF GUESS THE NUMBER OF CONDOMS IN THE JAR JON HOOVER | NEWS REPORTER Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma will pass out free condoms this week as part of National Condom Week in an effort to raise safe-sex awareness. Students can visit any Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma until Feb. 17 to partake in National Condom Week. The Planned Parenthood of Norman is located at 2100 W Lindsey St. The clinic will hold a “guess the number of condoms in the jar,” according to a press release.
Students can get free information, candy and a “Just Wear It” bumper sticker, according to the press release. Planned Parenthood clinics are also located in Edmond, Midwest City, south Oklahoma City and central Oklahoma City. The clinic will work with local radio stations in order to spread the word and reward callers with special prizes, according to the press release.

PUB CRAWL THIS WEEKEND STUPID CUPID PUB CRAWL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT NORMAN MUSIC ALLIANCE

Those looking to have fun this Valentine's Day can go to the Stupid Cupid Pub Crawl in downtown Norman at 7 p.m. this Friday. The event will be put on by the Norman Music Festival in conjunction with 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk and the Norman Arts Council, said Michelle Bui, public relations chair for Norman Music Festival. Proceeds will go to benefit the Norman Music Alliance along with helping local bars and businesses in Norman, Bui said. Anyone can go to any of the participating bars and pick up a ticket and join, Bui
said. All participants have to do is get a stamp from every bar on the list, and they will receive a free T-shirt. The event will finish out with a bang at the Opolis, where there will be live music, Bui said. The purpose event is "to have a cohesive community and have everyone working together" than to make money for the venues and pubs, Bui said. Overall, the goal is to "make a stronger community," she said. Between 100 and 300 participants are expected to come this year.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME OPENING WEEKEND ENCOMPASSES PASSION FOR AMERICA’S PAST TIME

C
an you feel it in the air? It’s the Clydesdales roaming a freshly groomed warning track in St. Louis, it’s means the President loosening up to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and it represents the long-awaited return of the nation’s pastime. It’s opening day. Baseball is back. While those opening day traditions will have to wait for the Major League season that begins in early April, Oklahoma starts its 2015 season this weekend when it hosts Notre Dame and SIU-Edwardsville in a five game series. The Fighting Irish, much like the Sooners, are expected to improve on their mediocre finish in 2014 after going 22-31 overall and 9-21 in ACC play. The difference will be made on the mound, where Notre Dame boasts several game-changers with experience. The Sooners will probably see senior Scott Kerrigan and junior Michael Hearne at some point over the weekend, both of whom rely heavily on off speed pitches to stifle
opposing lineups. Kerrigan and Hearne are Notre Dame’s top two returning starters from a year ago, and both fared well, posting a 1.87 and 2.51 ERA respectively. While both had success a year ago, this is an area that the Sooners offense can exploit. That’s due in large part to the quartet of hitters that the Sooners will showcase at the top of their order: Craig Aikin, Anthony Hermelyn, Hunter Haley and Sheldon Neuse. Those four combined to hit 17 home runs while sporting a .304 batting average. It’s Neuse in particular, a Baseball America pre-season All-American, who will strike the most fear into opposing pitchers. He had a team-leading seven home runs and 47 RBI during a stellar freshman campaign. But it’s not all about Notre Dame, as the Sooners will also host SIU-Edwardsville for a pair of games over the weekend. The Cougars went 16-14 last season in the Ohio Valley, but they won only five non-conference games thanks to a stout out-of-conference schedule, much like the one they’ll face to begin 2015.
The Cougars will rely on an embarrassment of experience — nine seniors make up this year’s roster — when they travel to Norman to face a pair of big time programs. Those are the important facts about OU’s upcoming weekend series against Notre Dame and SIU-Edwardsville. But there’s always more to it when talking about opening day. There’s always a certain romanticism about the first pitch of a new season. It’s given generations of Americans, athletes and fans alike, a much-needed distraction as they go through life. First pitch for OU will be at 5 p.m. on Friday against Notre Dame. The Sooners will then play a double header each of the next two days against the Fighting Irish and SIUEdwardsville, with games beginning at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday.
