7-hour wait to drink could be on tap OU State lawmaker proposes bill to make people wait until 7 a.m. on 21st birthday before buying alcohol SARAH MARTIN Campus Reporter

Bar trips for freshly turned 21-yearolds will have to be postponed if a proposed legislative amendment receives Oklahoma lawmakers’ support. Rep. Cory Williams, D-Stillwater, has introduced House Bill 3100, which

would ban the sale of alcohol to 21-yearolds before 7 a.m. on their birthday. The amendment is intended to prevent overconsumption of alcohol by 21-year-olds from midnight to 2 a.m. on their birthday, Williams said. Legally requiring people to wait until after 7 a.m. to purchase alcohol would encourage

responsible drinking over several hours instead of heavy drinking over just two hours, Williams said. A constituent proposed the idea after her daughter spent time in the hospital recovering from alcohol poisoning after drinking at midnight on her 21st birthday, Williams said. More than 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported in the U.S. every year,

An OU student organization is helping international and exchange students improve their grasp of the English language in an informal setting. English Conversation Café, which met Saturday for the second time, is presented by students involved with Campus Crusade for Christ and is intended to provide students a friendly way to improve their Englishspeaking skills, environmental health graduate student Andy Borgstrom said. “We knew that there were a lot of international students who need to learn English,” Borgstrom said. “We thought we should put ourselves in their shoes.” The group’s w e ekly meetings offer students the chance to practice their English while having fun, communication sophomore Sarah Hunt said. “It’s like we were just hanging out, it’s not intimidating as a classroom,” Hunt said. English Café attendees get to choose what they want to talk about and work on, making the exercises well-adapted to their needs, Hunt said. “ We a sk t h e m w hat would they want to work on and what would benefit them the most,” she

Many exchange students embark on journeys to the U.S. with hopes of improving their English. For some, now six months into their stay, improvements have been noticeable, even if there have been missteps and complications along the way. German mechanical engineering student Kristian Strüdde said the process has been a fulfilling one. Strüdde began learning first-hand by listening to common words American students were using. “My accent improved but I still sound German,” Strüdde said. “I guess I’ll never get rid of it.” When he arrived in America, Strüdde became aware of the stereotypes often associated with German accents by the media, he said. “In at least 50 percent of the movies I’ve seen here, the Germans were the bad guys,” Strüdde said. “Once, I heard my voice in a video, and I realized I sounded like the evil guy here.” Though his English see REACTION paGe 5
