TIME WELL SPENT

How Nancy Hayer went from snowbird to stage management as a volunteer at The Naples Players By Lauren Speirs

H

ere at The Naples Players (TNP), we value every single one of our volunteers. We are excited to highlight different people in our family for our Volunteer of the Month feature! Our volunteers are from all walks of life - from students to retirees to working professionals - and we have a place for anyone who wants to join our theatre family!

Meet Nancy Hayer, a Minneapolis native whose parents were snowbirding in Naples since the early 1980’s. Frequent visits led to her making the big move in 2019. “I’ve been coming to Naples for such a long time and would go to 5th Avenue often where I would see the big Naples Players building. I always thought, ‘I have to go see a play!’ When I finally moved down here I went to one of the Evenings on 5th and saw the big banners for The Great Gatsby. I immediately went online to buy a ticket and the prompt ‘want to volunteer?’ came up. I said ‘yes’ and Pamela (Larkin Caruso, Director of Volunteer Advancement) called me the next day!” Eager to dive in and get involved, Nancy did not waste any time in starting to volunteer at the theatre. “Pamela gave me the tour of the building and had a specific show in mind for me to start out with in the future. I couldn’t

It sounds cliché, but you’re very much a part of the family here. I feel that way with every show I work on. wait to get involved so I asked her, ‘do you have anything starting today? Or tomorrow?’ I started immediately with backstage run crew for The Great Gatsby.” As a child, Nancy would attend the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. “When I moved back to Minneapolis for five years, I volunteered at the Guthrie Theater as an usher and when I lived in Milwaukee I was a season ticket holder to Milwaukee Rep but I never participated backstage like I have at TNP - it’s been really fun and I really enjoy it.” Volunteering at The Naples Players includes many opportunities beyond the stage. Many of our amazing helpers lend a hand backstage, and run crew is one of these opportunities. Nancy says, “You do everything! I even got to learn how to make prop drinks for The Great Gatsby which was fun because I am not a bartender. You do whatever the stage manager needs - we would fold the shirts after quick changes.” By day, Nancy is a speech pathologist at Moorings Park and has spent most of her career in

geriatric rehabilitation. She also had her own business in accent modification. At the end of a long day, it’s important for her to keep moving when she comes to volunteer at TNP. “I like working backstage because I like to be busy and be up and moving. Especially at night when I’ve been working all day - I don’t think I could do something stationary such as spotlights or light board.” Outside of volunteering for performances, Nancy is also on the membership committee, participates in Trees and Teas, and volunteers as an assistant stage manager. “I made some very good friends working crew for Gatsby. One of the reasons I wanted to get involved in stage management was to find out what happens in the rehearsal process before tech week. I did Cole’s stage management class and then I was assistant stage manager for Yours, Truly, Calendar Girls, Boeing Boeing, and The Savannah Sipping Society.” In the future, possibly after retiring, Nancy would like to get involved in more departments at TNP. “I would love to brush up on my sewing skills and work in costumes. At the

TIME WELL SPENT Continued From Page 11 gala when the actors came into the lobby in costume, you really saw the detail in the costumes for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and all that work was just amazing. I also would like to get involved in scenic and sets because I love building things and painting. When I retire and have more time during the day that would definitely be something to check out.” The Naples Players is lucky to have volunteers like Nancy and we’re happy to be a place to work hard and have fun. “It sounds cliché but you’re very much a part of the family here. I feel that way with every show that I work on. You move down here not really knowing anyone and try to start a new life so it means a lot to me to have that family here. You see someone that you worked a show with and they greet you and remember you. It’s just one big family.”

Interested in volunteering? With so many options to get involved, why wait? Contact Director of Volunteer Advancement, Pamela Larkin Caruso today to tell us about yourself and we’ll find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

.

One critic described “Something Rotten!” as “easily the funniest thing to arrive on Broadway since The Book of Mormon ”. The show is the brainchild of a trio of Broadway rookies who created this valentine to Broadway musicals with a book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick and music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. “Something Rotten!” opened on Broadway in April, 2015, where it played for 742 performances. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and won one – Christian Borle as Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Tours and international productions have followed. Most Broadway newcomers don’t get their first show produced by Tony Award winner Kevin McCollum, or have Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw as their director-choreographer, or score a major hit when they choose to open directly on Broadway. But the Kirkpatricks and O’Farrell were very unusual Broadway first timers. The three of them traveled different creative paths: Karey had achieved success as an animated-film screenwriter, songwriter and director; Wayne had earned acclaim as a Grammy Award-winning songwriter; and O’Farrell had numerous writing successes.

30

BACKSTAGE

SOMETHING ROTTEN!

The seeds of Something Rotten! were sown in the mid-1990s when the Kirkpatricks started kicking ideas around with Kerry asking, ‘What would it be like writing in the shadow of William Shakespeare, after Romeo and Juliet just opened?’” With that, the brothers got down to work, and in 2010, Karey contacted producer McCollum, his old friend. Karey brought in O’Farrell to help craft the book; the brothers created the music and lyrics. A success ever since it opened and everywhere it has played, “Something Rotten!” is full of humor for Shakespeare aficionados and musical theater geeks. But as O’Farrell astutely observes, “If it works as a musical for people who don’t know musicals or Shakespeare, then I’m happy. It’s about show business and putting on a show. The show works on many levels, but mainly, I hope, it’s a great fun night out.”

THE

! ! ! T TES

While it’s true that “Something Rotten” does pass the Bechdel Test, very few people have any idea what that actually means. The Bechdel Test is a measure of women’s representation in media. In order for a work to pass, it must have a minimum of two named women who must have at least one conversation about something other than a man.

34

BACKSTAGE

SOMETHING ROTTEN!

The test is named after American cartoonist Alison Bechdel in whose 1985 comic strip the test first appeared. Bechdel actually credited the initial idea for the test in part to the writings of Virginia Woolf. The test came into use and has been widely discussed since the early 2000s. In Act Two of “Something Rotten”, Nigel meets Bea after she has had a baby shower with some female friends. Here we see the women talking to each other as Bea chats to them about the baby. The musical passes the Bechdel Test thanks to this scene alone. Passing or failing the test does not necessarily indicate how well women are represented in any specific work. Instead, the test is regarded as an indicator of the active presence of women in the film, stage, and fiction and is intended to call attention to gender inequality. (It’s interesting to note that studies indicate that works that pass the test perform better financially than those that do not.) Several variants of the test have been proposed, for example—that there must be at least a total of 60 seconds of conversation. The test has also attracted academic interest: in 2018, the term “Bechdel Test” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

BRADLEY VAN HOUTEN (Sound Designer) earned his bachelor’s degree in Theatre: Design & Technical Production and Theatre: Stage Management from Western Michigan University. After having the pleasure of working Off-Broadway on Soul Doctor and internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Brad joined TNP in 2013. Since then, he has worked on well over 100 productions and looks forward to many more. Select previous credits include The Wedding Singer, Footloose, Mamma Mia!, Peter and the Starcatcher, Chicago, Maple and Vine, She Kills Monsters, Sister Act, The Rocky Horror Show, and The 39 Steps.

CRAIG WALCK (Lighting Designer) After initially working for TNP from 2000-2006, Craig returned in 2011 after working for Columbia University, The All-Stars Project, and other theatrical groups in NYC from 2006-2008. He then oversaw the completion of construction, opening, and first two years of operation of the Miramar Cultural Center in Miramar, FL from 2008-2011. Overall, Craig has designed the lighting for over 170 TNP productions. Originally from Niagara Falls, N.Y., and a graduate of SUNY at Buffalo, he and his wife, Jessica, recently welcomed their greatest production ever: son Liam. Their dogs, Ziggy, Twoey, and Roscoe remain unimpressed.
