Most people know The Naples Players as a theatre. Yet on any given day, you are just as likely to find students attending classes at The Naples Players Academy of Dramatic Arts, volunteers building scenery and mentoring young artists, healthcare and community partners delivering arts-based programs, and audiences gathering for productions created largely by members of our community. That is because The Naples Players is more than a producing theatre. We are home to Southwest Florida’s only performing arts middle and high school, one of the nation’s largest volunteerpowered theatre programs, and nationally recognized initiatives that use the arts to improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life through partnerships with more than 45 community organizations. Few theatres in America create at this level, educate at this scale, and serve their community in so many ways. Together, these efforts demonstrate what is possible when a theatre is built not just for a community, but by one. Thank you for helping make all of this possible.

SPOTLIGHT ON

Stage, Care, and Community: How

Jennifer Hart

Lives Her Passion at The Naples Players

Whether she is guiding workplace culture, raising four children, or bringing characters to life on stage, Jennifer Hart embodies the transformative power of community theatre.

As Chief Culture Officer at Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH), Jen’s professional life centers on human connection—a passion that seamlessly bridges into her extensive work with The Naples Players (TNP). Currently starring opposite James Duggan as Rita, the ex-wife, in Rocket Man, Jen’s path back to the stage was sparked by collaboration and trust. “I don’t really search for acting opportunities,” Jen shares. “James Duggan directed my first TNP play, and when he told me about Rocket Man, I read the script and instantly connected to its unique, surprising story. It’s an exciting role, and working with director Veronica Ostroski made it complete.” Jennifer Hart in Clue: On Stage

20

BACKSTAGE

To prepare, Jen digs deep into the script weeks before rehearsals start, collaborating with the director on character foundations and curating a custom music playlist. “Actors often use music to connect with a character,” she explains. “Comparing playlists with James deepened our dynamic on stage.” For the Hart family, TNP is a true family affair. Jen and her husband, Jon—who both performed in high school theatre—moved to Naples and immediately immersed themselves and their children in the community. In 2024, the couple shared the stage in TNP’s Clue: On Stage. Their children grew up in TNP’s KidzAct program (now TNPAcademy), and their youngest daughter, Kizzie, is now a 7th grader at TNP’s Baker Day School. Kizzie often jokes that the renovated theater was named just for her. Through endless carpools, rehearsals, and performances, theatre became a cornerstone of their home. “Theatre teaches you how to speak publicly, read body language, and handle rejection,” Jen reflects. “Through the power of theatre, my children and their friends benefitted both academically and emotionally.” Beyond performance, Jen collaborated with James Duggan, in his role as an Artistic Associate at TNP, and

THE NAPLES PLAYERS

Jennifer performing in Readers Theatre

Summer Pliskow, TNP’s Director of Arts Access, to create ARTRx which aims to transform community, health and well-being through the power of artistic engagement. Jen and James engaged real actors to portray patients in NCH’s Simulation Center, modeled after TNP’s use of actors for the crisis negotiation work with Collier County Sheriff’s Office. Physicians credit the program with literally saving lives, and its success inspired NCH to expand into music, painting, and crafting for many of their patients, including those on oncology units and transfusion clinics. The Story

BehindThe Story THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Long before multiverses became a staple of movies and television, playwright Steven Dietz was asking a deceptively simple question:

What happens to the lives we didn’t choose? In Rocket Man, Donny Rowan has reached a breaking point. He puts everything he owns on his front lawn beneath a sign reading, “Here’s my life. Make an offer.” Then he retreats to his attic, convinced that somewhere in the universe exists another version of his life, one where all the roads he never took are still being traveled. The result is what Dietz calls a “serious comedy,” blending an ordinary midlife crisis with some decidedly extraordinary possibilities.

24

BACKSTAGE

ROCKET MAN

A Play Ahead of Its Time Rocket Man was commissioned by Arizona Theatre Company and received its world premiere there in 1998. It was Dietz’s third world premiere with the company, following Private Eyes and his adaptation of Dracula. The original production starred Kurt Rhoads as Donny and included Lauren Tewes, best known to television audiences as cruise director Julie McCoy on The Love Boat. Dietz has since become one of America’s most frequently produced living playwrights, with more than 40 plays and adaptations performed at regional theatres across the country and internationally. Yet Rocket Man remains one of his lesser-known works, an unusual mixture of comedy, family drama and cosmic possibility.

How the Story Unites Us Most of us don’t put our belongings on the lawn and attempt to escape into a parallel universe. But nearly everyone has wondered, “What if?” What if I had taken that job? Stayed in that relationship? Made the other choice? Rocket Man turns that universal curiosity into something bigger. Our lives are shaped as much by the paths we leave behind as the ones we choose. And while we may never know what could have been, the story reminds us that there is still enormous possibility in what comes next.

Stage Manager

For audience members unfamiliar with the theater, what does a stage manager do? I consider a stage manager to be the heartbeat of a production, coordinating daily operations to keep everything on track. We manage schedules and communication so designers, directors, and administrators stay informed on production needs. Stage managers lead rehearsals and performances, record actor blocking for consistency, and build a detailed cue book to execute lighting, sound, and props perfectly.

How did your journey from volunteer to stage manager prepare you for this show? I started off volunteering in sound and lighting before moving backstage, where I believe most of my growth came from. Seeing how all elements work together was invaluable, but assistant stage managing Sweeney Todd last summer truly prepared me. Seeing the process from start to finish taught me to write reports, manage schedules, and understand the importance of blocking.

Once the curtain goes up, how do you keep the show running smoothly? When the curtain goes up, I keep time for the show and call cues so lights and sounds trigger at the right moment. I ensure actors enter on cue with the correct props. From the booth, I am in constant communication with my backstage crew to confirm actors are in place and ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

How does the play’s core question about choosing different paths resonate with you? Stage managing allows me to become deeply familiar with the script, discovering new insights through rehearsals. What really resonates with me is that whichever path you choose, what is meant to be will happen. My personal take is that it’s okay to make mistakes, as long as I enjoy the journey, appreciate loved ones, and trust my destination.

What happens behind the scenes if something unexpected goes wrong during a live performance? If something unexpected goes wrong, stage managers gauge the seriousness to determine if a show hold is needed. For minor audience issues, I coordinate with Front of House to handle it. For minor actor issues, I coordinate with backstage crew to provide quick solutions. If major problems require immediate attention, a show hold is called to keep everyone safe.

ROCKET MAN

SHERLAY CAJUSTE (Stage Manager) was born and raised here in Naples, FL. She came back home in 2022 after graduating from FSU looking to delve more in the film/theatre world and found The Naples Players. Having lived here her whole life, she did not know this wonderful community theatre was in her vicinity. Sherlay immediately signed up as a volunteer and her first show was Blithe Spirit where she met the kindest and most amazing community she could ask for. She couldn’t stop coming back after that. After a couple years of trying out different roles backstage, Sherlay finally mustered up the courage to take the stage management class offered by TNP and stage managed A Piece of My Heart last year. THOMAS HARTLAND (Co-Lighting Designer) is excited to be co-designing lights for this production of Rocket Man. Other notable credits for him include co-designing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Master Electrician for Little Women here at The Naples Players. He hopes you enjoy the show! AMY HUGHES (Props Designer) is thrilled to take on the role of Props Director for The Naples Players. With over thirty years of experience in community theatre on both sides of the stage, Amy enjoys the challenge of discovering, designing, and creating the props that help bring each story to life. Whether sourcing period pieces or crafting custom items, Amy believes every object on stage plays a part in the magic of live performance. Amy is grateful to work alongside such a talented cast, crew, and creative team and thanks family, friends, and you for supporting local theatre.
