FEATURE STORY
MEET
NORMAN
TOBACK By Jillian Keith
An uplifting tale of family, love, and hope - It’s a Wonderful Life is a Christmas story that has stolen the hearts of audiences for over 70 years, including ensemble actor Norman Toback’s. For retired college dean and professor, Norman Toback, performing in this show is the opportunity of a lifetime. After moving to Florida in 2008, Toback says that he wasn’t completely ready for retirement. “I needed something to put my skills towards, and I have always wanted to be an actor. I started taking classes here and in Venice and eventually got up enough courage to start auditioning. I’ve discovered that being a college professor is a lot like acting. So far as I’m concerned, I’ve always been an actor. My lesson is my script - it’s all in my head. I know what my subject is, and I have to make it interesting for my class or audience. I have to use a lot of the same skills.” Since finding TNP in 2018, Norman hasn’t looked back. He’s been in several productions including Calendar Girls, The Sound of Music, a number of Readers Theatre productions, and the Readers Theatre Radio. “I love being

involved with TNP. This community has become my second home and my family. I love how professional it is here. This troupe, this theater, the people - everything keeps me coming back.” “I’m not a kid anymore, but I’m not done learning yet. This is a gift I’ve given myself to be able to try new things that perhaps are a little bit different from the way I had to make a living. This is me allowing myself to have fun and get involved every single day. Regardless of how hard it is - and it can be hard, you know you’ve got to memorize lines and movement - it’s still a gift. And if you want to get involved, this is a gift that you can give yourself as well.” Additionally, Norman was also a part of the original cast of It’s a Wonderful Life: Live
IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE
It’s one of my favorite movies. It’s a dream getting to do this play based on a movie I absolutely adore. – NORMAN TOBACK Radio Play three years ago. “I still remember when we got the call from Cole three years ago saying that two of our leads were ill and we would be unable to perform,” recalls Norman, “I’ve always said to my friends, ‘boy, I hope they bring it back,’ because it’s such a fun and impactful show. It’s a great show to be a part of and a great cast. Everybody is really animated and we’re having so much fun with the script and the story. I love every rehearsal, the process, and being on stage.” After three years apart, Norman says that he feels more prepared for this experience and show. “I now have two more plays under my belt, and I think I understand a little more about characterization. I’ve developed my ensemble characters a lot since three years ago. I’ve learned that acting is becoming the part. I’ve learned how to get into the head and the psychological process of the characters I play:
why they’re saying what they’re saying, and what motivates them to say something in a particular moment in a particular way.” While his characters and confidence level have changed, one thing has remained consistent. “My favorite part of the process has been the relationships I’ve developed with the other actors and the creative team. It’s a real family here. From the very first night of rehearsal, we fell right back into it. It was like the three years never happened.” It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the classic 1946 holiday movie with a clever twist: the production is staged as a live radio broadcast. Norman says he remembers listening to radio plays when he was younger, and still enjoys making them to this day. This component was one of the things that drew continued on next page

him to this production. “A radio play is a play that’s broadcast with only sound over the radio. It’s all about sound, voice characterization, and using your imagination. Since this show is live, it’s much more like a traditional play than a radio play, but it still heavily relies on your voice and sound to tell the story.” Described by Chicago Sun-Times as “One of the best holiday shows around. This is a fresh and inventive way of reconnecting with a classic story of love and redemption,” Norman says, “If you love the movie, you’re going to love the play, and you’re going to be surprised at how much the play adds to the story. The play adds no new content, but the live presentation adds to the audience’s understanding of what George Bailey is going through.” Thank you, Norman for coming back for round two of It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play!

HOW it CAME TO BE You know, even when we’re certain that the ending of a play will be happy, even when we’ve seen the same play 10 times, and even when its very title tells us that there’s not going to be any suspense about the outcome, we still LOVE it! That’s certainly true for It’s a Wonderful Life and especially in the wake of the unfortunate events related to the pandemic. Bringing Frank Capra’s classic film to the stage began almost 20 years ago when Joe Landry’s longtime friend and teacher asked him to adapt the movie for her high school troupe’s play. After the premiere of this original version — followed by an amateur performance by TheatreWorks in New Milford, CT — the play was

scheduled for its first professional production at the legendary Westport Country Playhouse. Sadly, the budget skyrocketed, and the play was dropped from the slate.
And fortunately for holiday audiences everywhere, that’s when the idea to stage the piece as a live radio play was born. It’s A Wonderful Life – the radio play - was “staged” as a 1940s live radio broadcast in front of a studio audience at Stamford Center for the Arts in 1996. Just five actors perform the dozens of roles in the play, accompanied by a Foley artist who produces all of the sound effects. It has been performed all across the country to critical acclaim, bringing the spirit of the season and the message of hope and goodness to tens of thousands.

DO THEY THEY HOW DO DO THAT One of the many joys of It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is, no kidding, the sound effects. Since it’s presented as a radio play, Wonderful Life must recreate all the sounds listeners would hear when they tuned into the play on their radios in the ‘40s. And those of us who are fortunate enough to come to the theater in person to “see” the radio play can actually take our seats, close our eyes, and hear everything. But it’s so much more fun to watch!

All because of a man called Jack Foley! Jack Donovan Foley started work at Universal Studios in 1914 during the silent movie era. When a competitor released the first-ever ‘talking’ film, Universal put out a call for employees with radio experience. Foley stepped forward and became head of the Universal sound crew. The rest, as they say, is history. Because microphones of the time could only pick up dialogue, all other sounds had to be added after the film was shot. The timing had to be perfect so noises like footsteps and closing doors could be synchronized with the actors’ movements in the film. Jack Foley created

sounds for films until his death in 1967, and his methods are still used today. Foley, as it became known, is the reproduction of everyday sounds that are added to enhance audio quality. They can be anything from the swishing of clothing to footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass, and they are completely realistic. It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play delights audiences and stays true to its billing as a radio play by featuring an array of sound effects right on stage. Most of the sounds come from easily recognizable objects used in unusual ways to recreate familiar sounds. And in addition to a very few actors having to switch between many roles in the play, the Foley artist must also keep up with the action!

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE
CHRISTINE MASTRANGELO (Ensemble) is grateful for the opportunity to perform
once again with The Naples Players and bring these characters to life. She is an active volunteer with the organization and has been involved in productions with TNP since 2016. Christine has been blessed to perform in various roles in NY, NJ, FL and Shanghai throughout her career. This performance is an opportunity to bring a message of love to the community. What a great pleasure to work with Bryce again alongside the talented cast and entire TNP family who collaborate to make these moments possible. Thanks for sharing the stage. A special thanks to her partner, Brad Brenner, who inspires her everyday. This performance is dedicated especially to my family. A message to those who may not easily recognize their “Clarence” - he’s out there, you are important, and you are loved. Always.
SYDNEY MILLER (Mary) is thrilled to be back on the TNP stage and it feels only fitting that she would be doing another holiday show with The Naples Players, since her very first TNP production was last season’s A Christmas Carol. While she loves musicals and rounded out a fantastic summer as an ensemble member in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, she’s been eager to join TNP for a straight play production. It’s a Wonderful Life holds a very special place in her heart and she’s honored to bring the role of Mary to life. Many thanks to the cast and crew for sharing their incredible talents, and to Bryce for entrusting her with this part. Sydney would also like to thank her amazing hubby for always supporting her in her endeavors. Enjoy the show!
MATT SCHWABAUER (George Bailey) is thrilled to be back on The Naples Players
stage. Recent TNP credits include Ensemble/The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Captain Von Trapp/The Sound of Music. Other notable past roles include Charlie Martin/On Golden Pond, Algernon Moncrieff/The Importance of Being Earnest, and Edgar/King Lear. During his daytime hours, he is the Technical Director/Head Carpenter at TheatreZone. His hope is that the riches of friendship and the wine of joy and prosperity would find you this holiday season.
ESTHER SNYDER (The Foley Artist/ Properties Coordinator) is excited for the opportunity to not memorize any lines! Her fascination with Foley began with listening to A Prairie Home Companion on family car trips. Previous roles include Edith/ Blithe Spirit, Annie Cannon/Silent Sky, Colleen/Ripcord, Johnna/August: Osage County (The Studio Players), and Ensemble/Love, Loss, and What I Wore. She dedicates this performance to her father, who forces her to watch the movie every Christmas. (Dad, you better be awake!) Many thanks to the cast, crew, designers, and all the dedicated volunteers at TNP!
NORMAN TOBACK (Ensemble) finished a full run last year as Liam in Tim Firth’s
Calendar Girls at The Naples Players. More recently, he has appeared as Frantz in The Sound of Music. Additionally, he has appeared in various Readers Theatre and Readers Theatre Radio productions. He is thrilled to be back for a rerun of It’s a Wonderful Life.

What George Bailey Teaches Us Set in upstate New York during the first half of the 20th century, It’s a Wonderful Life tells the story of a young man who wanted to travel, have adventures, go to college, and be an architect in a big city. But his responsibilities to family and his community kept him from leaving the small town where he grew up. He held a responsible job, raised a family, treated people decently, and helped out whenever he could. Then, one tumultuous Christmas Eve, Bailey is shown how much he has meant to those around him and that happiness can be found in family, friends, and fulfilling a responsibility, right in your own home town. The lesson of It’s a Wonderful Life is that everyone can make a difference by living a responsible, caring life. This message is different from the modern advice given to so many young people: follow your dream, leave home, and venture out into the world. According to the play, a wonderful life depends upon family, friends and having an honest job that contributes to the community.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE
This movie contains valuable lessons for our time. Bailey, as head of the town’s savings and loan, keeps his own salary at a reasonable level. He makes sure that the S & L benefits members and serves the interests of the community. He has an enduring competition with the town’s richest man who apparently will do anything to increase his wealth. This play holds that everyone makes a difference, good or bad, and that people who live responsible, empathic lives have a positive impact on those around them. Despite unfulfilled dreams and thwarted goals, Bailey’s grit, resilience, empathy and compassion reveal him to be a decent, caring human being. He’s determined to be a good father, husband, son, brother, business owner, and member of his community. Through the eyes of his guardian angel, Clarence, we see these qualities emerge, and we hope that George will come to see himself as we do before jumping from that icy bridge. During the dark fantasy where George sees what the world would have been like had he never been born, Clarence reminds him that a man’s life touches so many others, and when he isn’t around, he leaves a big hole. In the compelling words of Fra Giovanni* nearly five centuries ago, “The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within reach, is joy.” George Bailey’s redemption may be hard-won, but his strength of character makes it that much sweeter. *Giovanni Giocondo was born in Verona around 1433. He joined the Dominican Order at 18 and was one of the many of that Order who promulgated the Renaissance.
