Our Mission
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants is committed to research on the lineal descent of the Mayflower Pilgrims and education about the Pilgrims who traveled aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The Society provides education and understanding of why the Mayflower Pilgrims were important, how they shaped western civilization, and what their 1620 voyage means today and its impact on the world.
A Message from Governor General
JANE E. GROVES RIDDELL HURT We are pleased to share this report on the operations and finances of our great Society from July 01, 2022 through June 30, 2023. Member Societies are the strength of our organization. During the Forty-third General Congress we reported on the milestones achieved despite the adversities of the past three years. The General Society supports technology advancement to automate the application process through the Virtual Vault, the preparation of the Easy Application Generator, and the Indexing program while moving the Society forward bringing new opportunities and cost efficiencies. Our attention to the genealogical information about Mayflower families has resulted in the “gold standard” status that we enjoy today. In order to maintain our exacting standards, we are building technology advancements to create the infrastructure necessary to maintain that quality and efficiencies in our processes. Our beloved Mayflower Society House transformation was opened during this 2023 General Congress. Skilled artisans and craftsmen labored and took great pride in the essential repairs. It was only through your generosity and support that it has been renovated to stand for the next generation of Mayflower descendants. Thank you! The GSMD lecture series offered to members and the public is a success. This project is an outreach of our education on the Pilgrims, their voyage in 1620, and the Mayflower Compact. The National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse will offer an incredible opportunity to further this educational portion of our mission to preserve the sacred legacy of our 1620 Pilgrim ancestors for posterity. On behalf of the Society, I want to thank our 54 Member Societies who serve as ambassadors for membership, while nurturing the bonds of existing members. To each of the numerous people who have participated in these activities and who have supported the work and mission of the General Society, I offer my heartfelt thanks.

A Message from Executive Director MARK SCHMIDT
The fiscal year 2022-2023 was one in which The Mayflower Society had its share of triumphs as well as challenges. While restoration work continued on the Mayflower Society House, with a targeted end date of September 1, 2023, and on the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse, which will take many more years to complete, the Society continued to function and grow. The backlog of applications from 2020 were brought to bear under the able guidance of Director of Genealogy and Research Services Dr. Erin Scheopner and her skilled team. The Technology Committee continues to make progress on the “Easy App Generator”, which will be designed to make the application process easier and faster for those seeking admission to the Society. The application processes continue to improve as more digitization and technology speed up the timetable. Virtual programming expanded with the intention of reaching more and diverse households. The General Board of Assistants meeting in Minnesota was well-attended and well-run. Monetary grants were provided to the Society for a variety of projects and reasons. The financial picture ended strongly for the Society. There was much to celebrate. There was also much to remember more somberly. Dr. Scheopner left the Society at the end of March for a position at Boston College. Director of Finance Cheryl Whittaker was hospitalized and ultimately forced to work from home due to a fall resulting in a broken femur, cracked ribs and back issues. Secretary General Meg Averett essentially had to cut her term short when she endured a fall, resulting in a broken femur. Marketing Manager Doug Blake was hospitalized with back issues. Other health woes impacted other staff members as well. But, resilient as ever, the staff moved forward. The upcoming fiscal year will provide its own set of challenges. Once the Mayflower Society House construction concludes, tours will be available for the public beginning in May 2024. The Mayflower Society Library was rebranded as the Mayflower Society Research Center, and the replacement for Dr. Scheopner will be the initial Research Center Director. Digitization of approved applications will continue so that all of our data is safe and available to be used in the Easy App Generator project. The triennial Congress will be held in September 2023, and a new Executive Committee will be elected. The Silver Books team continues to research and improve our proprietary lineage study, and a new Silver Books Index is on the horizon. As the Research Center evolves, other fiscal and educational opportunities will manifest themselves. This is a time of great growth potential for the Society. A word, if I may, about the outgoing Executive Committee, led by Governor General Jane Hurt. It is an honor and a privilege for me to serve under this EC, who I know are proud and devoted to make GSMD as strong an organization as they can make it. I am humbled to serve with a staff as talented and dedicated as those who currently are employed by GSMD. The abilities of both groups are inspiring, and each day provides new opportunities to demonstrate just how strong an organization this has become. There is work to be done, and there are imperfections that need correction, but the aptitude shown by committee members, staff members and other contributors to the organization demonstrate the capabilities we collectively possess. The upcoming fiscal year 2023-2024 will present a new array of challenges and opportunities for the Society to succeed. We want to promote ourselves and attract new members while retaining those who have already chosen to join. We are striving to improve the member experience while enhancing our reputation as the “Gold Standard” for lineage membership. We have grand plans for the future and our outlook is bright. We trust you will like how this year’s fiscal picture is presented to you, and how this Annual Report reads to you. A Message from Treasurer General BART HENSON
The financial state of your Society remains strong. For the fiscal year 2023, which ended June 30, 2023,
Operating Revenue $2,530,350 Operating Expense $2,310,147 Operating Surplus $220,203 Operating revenue was $57k higher than the budget and up 10.2% from last year as dues, endowment draws, and gifts increased. Operating expenses were under budget by $153k but up 7.2% from last year. Sales continued lower than the peak 400th Anniversary year. Expenses were significantly below budget due mainly to staffing vacancies and lower GBOA costs, partly offset by higher inflation costs and higher Silver Book investment. As of June 30, 2023, total assets were $13,343,473, primarily in investment securities or cash. Total liabilities are only 4% of assets. Our total assets, excluding the actual value of our historic structure (Mayflower Society House), increased in value by 3.6% in the year as our invested assets gained $727k in the fiscal year due to the general market gains.

We were blessed with a number of gifts we received during the year, including a bequest of $250,000 from Ms. Jean Foss of the North Carolina Society, $200,000 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council as well as special gifts from members, member societies, and other groups. For the first time, we conducted a successful spring appeal in addition to the traditional late-year appeal. We will continue doing two appeals a year. Thank you to all who helped! As you know, a major refurbishment project is well underway at our Society House. Long-deferred and much-needed repairs will be completed by the end of 2023. Funding is being provided by the Governor General’s 1620 fund, the Jean Foss bequest, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and town of Plymouth gifts, unexpected Employee Retention tax credits, individual gifts, some of the fiscal year 2021 surplus, and a draw from the Mayflower House Endowment Fund, none of which came from current Operating budgets. I’d also like to note that the National Pilgrim Memorial Meeting House finances (gifts, accounts, and expenses) are handled completely separately by a different Treasurer and Trustees except for being included in our joint tax filings, and sharing use of several GSMD staff. I thank the Governor General, other officers, the Executive Director, and especially the Finance Director for their help and support!

Governor General’s 1620 Club 2022 - 2023 The Governor General’s 1620 Club Membership is a designation given to The Mayflower Society’s donors who give at the level of $1,620 or more per year. These donations are designated for special projects that would not otherwise be supported. 1620 Club donors receive an exclusive 1620 Club pin, and an invitation for two to the Governor General’s annual tour, followed by the 1620 Club Banquet. The Governor General’s 1620 Club members have gifted $1,620 or more during the giving period. The giving period for this year ended September 2023.

The Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes excellence and dedication to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) and is presented for extraordinary and extensive service. The recipient of the 2022 Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award was Alexandra “Allie” Shires Golon of the Colorado Society. Ms. Golon has been a faithful supporter and volunteer for GSMD in many capacities.
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants’ (GSMD) prestigious Pilgrim Academic Research Award recognizes scholarly contribution and advancement in Pilgrim related research. The 2022 Pilgrim Academic Research Award was presented by Governor General Jane Hurt to Richard H. Pickering, Deputy Executive Director of Plimoth Patuxet Museums, on September 11, 2022, at the Governor General’s 1620 Club Banquet in Bloomington, Minnesota.
