The original NZ School of Creativit y Everyone on The Learning Connexion’s staff engages with creativity. This includes those from accounts, maintenance, administration and all the other supposedly non-creative areas of an organisation. We regard EVERY AREA and EVERY PERSON as creative and we understand that creativity is a core part of work and life.

TLC has taught creativity in our organization and with our students for 30 years. We understand that this is as much a community process as an individual practice.

The photograph (on frontcover) shows some of our staff working to create the highest free-standing structure to support the weight of a medium-sized stone involved imagination, experimentation, maths, physics, risk-taking, visualisation, a steady nerve and much more. It might look like an exercise for year 1 kids, but why not try it out for yourself and send us your photographs!

We underestimate the value of paying attention to what kids do with creativity, or how important it is for their development. Embracing what seem like childlike exercises, for instance stone and newspaper, allows us to move past any fear of being ‘wrong,’ or not getting it right.

TLC staff are used to this and they leap into these challenges with a great sense of freedom. Yet, in the business world, it’s rare to come upon this level of openness. We find that the fast exploration of creativity helps discussions and teams achieve good strategic decisions.

The underlying plan at TLC is to support both individual and collective creativity, and we carry this into our classes.

Tutors work alongside students’ individual creativity patterns and encourage them to share these outcomes with the rest of the group. This gives students the highest benefit from the group’s creative energy and helps them discover what more they can do on their own.

In the everyday world, unfortunately, there is a tendency to resist creativity (this is a bigger story than I can write about here). At TLC, on the other hand, our staff are attracted to creativity and encourage students to test out their creativity skills in that strange place that is sometimes called the ‘real world’.

The challenge is to develop the blend of resilience, craft and originality that will give each of them the best chance to build sustainable creativity into their lives.

TLC, as an organization, is on the same journey. We’re trying to find out how a school can nurture creativity within a national system that, despite all the clever slogans, is really cautious and afraid (of creativity). It takes courage.

Our students and our school are on the same path and that’s what makes us so special.

Located at Taita in Lower Hutt, The Learning Connexion campus is set within four hectares of New Zealand native bush. We have expansive views that look out over the Hutt Valley. Our campus is an action-packed art space, where students and tutors come to explore their creative ideas in a supportive environment.

What makes us unique

Creativity: Thinking for a change (CTFAC)

Experienced tutors & mentors Our tutors and mentors are all practising artists. They bring real world expertise from their respective creative industries to their roles. Passionate about art and creativity, they are enthusiastic teachers who love seeing their students grow in confidence and develop their skills.

Tutors run classes on our campus and assist students in developing and achieving their personal artistic goals. Our tutors’ professional knowledge and hands-on technical skills are passed on to their students. Tutors facilitate regular class group critiques as students develop the ability to articulate and self-critique their work and support others.

Mentors work closely, one-on-one, with distance delivery students to support their individual needs. All students are assigned a mentor who works with them throughout their programme, guiding their development and giving individual feedback and suggesting study resources.

Community liaison To use creative thinking to problem solve in a ‘live’ environment is a valuable, and sought after skill set. We advocate for collaboration with community groups, whilst studying, as this allows students to develop ideas, test them out and gain invaluable experience. To support our students’ studies we provide an experienced community liaison person who connects students with community projects and events to help them build their networks and gain industry experience while studying.

Student exhibitions Throughout the year students are expected to participate in public TLC exhibitions. This helps them build confidence and understand how their work is connecting with a wider audience. They learn a range of relevant skills from how to prepare work for an exhibition, what to exhibit, right through to the basics of setting themselves up for selling work within a gallery or online.

Student support We offer a dedicated on-site learning support staff member to support our students' learning needs. This includes help with study skills and understanding of programme requirements. We also have experienced programme support staff members who are responsive to the daily challenges faced by our diverse group of students.

The Workroom and Online Resource Area Our school has an online digital community called The Workroom. This is a place where students can save and share photos of their work to show mentors and share their creative processes with one another.

The Online Resource Area (known as ORA) houses all of The Learning Connexion’s video content, podcasts and written resources in an easy to use online platform for all students to access.

Library and resource room

Reference Library Our library and resource room has a fantastic collection of read-worthy books and informative videos. We have four computers available for student use with swipe key access to an A3 colour photocopier. DVDs can be viewed within the library itself or loaned out. Books are available as on-site reference material, for students only.

Financial support Our Admissions team, along with our StudyLink advisor, can assist you with applying for a Student Loan through StudyLink. WINZ may be able to provide support for childcare costs while studying. For more information contact WINZ on 0800 559 009, or visit www.workandincome.govt.nz.

Creative art classes for children Held on our vibrant Taita campus, we provide children with several unforgettable, authentic art school experiences.

Art classes for kids: Creative art classes for kids run for a full term and offer kids a range of interesting and fun projects. They are designed to be lots of fun, encouraging experimentation, imagination and lots of spontaneity in a safe and creative environment.

Weekly classes include, but are not limited to, 3D sculptural creations, animation, filmmaking, photography, printmaking, painting and drawing. Kids also have the opportunity to exhibit their work at our end of term exhibition.

Kids holiday art programme: Whether you are working, or just need a break, The Learning Connexion’s kids holiday programme is a great way to keep your kids happy, engaged and having creative holiday fun!

The Learning Connexion is a Category 1 provider, which means that we provide some of the highest standards of education available from a New Zealand academic provider. We are a member of the New Zealand Quality Tertiary Institutions Inc., which is driven by innovation, collaboration and excellence in tertiary education.

All of our nationally recognized qualifications in creativity are student-centric, hands-on, and emphasise collaboration and connections between creativity, the process of art making and the wider field of creative application.

During their programme of study students work closely with their tutors and mentors to develop creative ideas to explore. Students gain a creativity and art education that embraces personal choice and gives them the hard and soft skills necessary to become a successful, professional, practising artist.

All of our programmes can be studied via distance learning or on-site at our Taita campus. All students participate in supervised independent study and research.

While students cannot put their programme on hold once they have enrolled, students can take a break between programme levels, i.e. between Certificate and Diploma and between years if they are a part-time student (i.e. year one and year two). In some cases we may be able to grant an extension, but only where there are extenuating circumstances.

This qualification is for people wanting to gain foundation skills in creativity, including the ability to explore ideas in a range of conventions and media.

Graduates will be able to apply skills with some guidance in experimentation, communication of ideas, problem-solving, risk-taking and self-evaluation in different areas of work and communities.

Entry requirements Commitment, and the ability to maintain studies, are key prerequisites for all of our qualifications. Students entering into the Certificate programme do not need to have previous art experience or prior qualifications.

Although no previous art experience or prior qualifications are required, the qualification does provide a pathway from the: • New Zealand Certificate in Arts and Design (Level 3) • New Zealand Certificate in Digital Media and Design (Level 3) • New Zealand Certificate in Ngā Toi (Level 3) The qualification provides a pathway to higher level diploma or degree-level study, for example, the New Zealand Diploma in Creativity (Level 5) [Ref: 2867]. *See page 35-38 for more information about fees and enrolment details.

The goal of the Diploma in Creativity (level 5) programme is to acquire a range of skills in creativity, including the ability to expand original ideas in a range of conventions and media/material to provide an understanding of creative process and practice.

You will focus on your areas of interest and, by working with your core drivers, expand your transferable and transportable skills, as well as your creativity.

The Diploma in Creativity (level 6) programme encourages students to be self-driven. Work will reveal the emergence of a personal style and a strong level of technical skill.

This qualification is for people seeking the skills and knowledge to effectively apply creative processes across a range of vocations and disciplines.

Graduates will be able to apply creative thinking and creative-making skills independently, in a new role or their current role, across a broad range of vocations and disciplines.

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) programme builds on a student's existing skill base, focusing on art as a process with studio-based work developed from projects, briefs and independent research.

Students engage with ideas and practices that demonstrate the materials, methods and understanding of the concepts crucial to the meaning of the work. Students are expected to produce a body of experimental work for weekly studio critique and create several major works for exhibition.

Students will find their assumptions challenged and their art opened to a practice that is engaging both creatively and intellectually. They will develop new ways of viewing materials, a fresh approach to critiquing art and a deeper understanding of their own practice and how it relates within the broader spectrum of modernist and contemporary art.

Subject Areas / course content

Sculpture class

The subject areas you choose to focus on will influence the classes you take and the resources you use. Many classes and resources can apply to several subject areas so there is plenty of flexibility for you to develop your own creative journey.

If you want to make any changes to your subject areas talk to your mentor or programme support.

Please note that the structure of the Advanced Diploma of Art and Creativity NZQA Level 7 differs from the New Zealand creativity qualifications levels 4, 5 and 6 in that it has set modules and projects that relate to all media, rather than subject areas.

Classes and resources not only develop your technical skills, they also develop your creativity by extending your ability to apply those skills to your ideas.

Below is a list of subject areas, with the creative applications and technical skills specific to each area that you will work with if you select them.

Please note TLC can supervise your creative process in any area of study, but it may not be able to help with specialised knowledge and field skills. Where outside assistance is required this is your own responsibility.

3D class

3D incorporates sculptural practices ranging from traditional casting processes to contemporary approaches that include mixed media and installation.

Finished works can range in scale from the tiny to the megalithic, including media as varied as soft stone, clay, plaster, wood, wire, wax, bronze, glass and metals.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Creating 3D works using casting and moulding processes • Creating 3D works using additive and reductive techniques • Creating installation and performance work • Creating work from ready-made or found materials

Computer graphics is for students who want to specialise in graphic design and explore how to shape creative concepts using computer-based technology and industry standard software.

Students learn how to manipulate photographic imagery, create digital illustrations and work with more traditional graphic design processes. For example, students can develop technical digital skills which could be linked with other art techniques to create images ready for use in printmaking classes and large format prints.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Digital painting, illustration and collage • Photo retouching and image manipulation • Typographical layout • Promotional material (including posters, flyers and business cards) • Interface design • Character design • Creating source material for animation • Producing visual material for video

Design

Design explores the application of art in a commercial setting and teaches students ‘visual literacy’. This course incorporates a range of media including photography, computer graphics, drawing and painting.

Students will develop the ability to interpret information and communicate this visually to an audience.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Graphic design – logo design, magazine, promotional, corporate, video/TV, packaging • Illustration – transforming metaphorical ideas into visual statements and spot illustrations, the interpretation of a block of text • Book design – cover design and story illustration • Character design – comic books, caricature, political narrative and animation • Printmaking – covering multiple print techniques

Drawing is one of the most fundamental ways of learning how to see a subject and is an invaluable tool for developing ideas and concepts. Explore drawing and mark marking using charcoal, pencil, crayon, chalk pastel, ink, dye or watercolour.

Specific tuition is available in observational drawing, drawing from life and expressive gestural drawing.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Observational drawing • Imaginative and expressive drawing • Abstract drawing • Life drawing • Illustration • Sketching, planning and concept designing for other media

Painting offers students an opportunity to develop a wide range of skills around wet media. You will explore and experiment with colour, composition, materials and techniques to discover which processes best suit your creative goals. Work with wet media - acrylics, pastels, gouache, oil paint and watercolour.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Realistic painting (including photographic components) • Super-realism • Illusions and combinations of literal and abstract • Abstract painting (including expression, imagination, abstraction, energy fields, dynamic surfaces) • Action painting, visual messages and integration with words • Painting for sets, film and animation • Illustration

With new technology, photography is becoming an increasingly accessible and flexible medium. Students can explore portraiture, documentary, studio photography, pinhole and photogram techniques and the use of photography for archiving and marketing artwork made in other media. The creative potential is limitless when linking the art of photography with other subjects and classes* such as printmaking, design and computer graphics.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Portrait • Studio • Panoramic • Photographic collages • Photojournalism and story narratives • Photograms • Landscape photography (including sea and skyscapes) • Exploration of subject matter (e.g. the human body, animals, subconscious ideas and still-life) • Experimental and abstract photography • The use of photography to create multimedia artworks • Documenting artwork

Moving images are used to explore and develop ideas within a digital world. Students will undertake a range of technical classes and creative technology workshops in documentary, music video, drama, experimental video and animation.

Students script and tell stories in documentary or drama genres, extend painting and drawing skills through the use of animation, or transfer video skills into installation and non-narrative video works of art.

S t udy O p t ions The Learning Connexion’s goal is to provide a pathway of learning which best suits the individual needs of each student within an inclusive learning environment. We offer options for on-site or distance study from home. All of our programmes can be completed full-time or part-time and we also offer short classes for casual students.

These flexible study options give our students the opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills while meeting existing personal commitments (e.g. work and family).

Study on-site Studying on-site provides a vibrant, supportive community that enhances creativity with students having access to the wide range of facilities available at The Learning Connexion.

Students can attend weekend, block and evening classes in addition to their main weekday classes. Daily contact with staff and other students offers quick and easy feedback about ideas and processes. Many new friendships continue beyond the programme and we see students collaborating on projects long after they have graduated.

On-site weekday classes run from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Study from home Distance delivery (study from home) is offered in a variety of ways to meet student needs. This gives students the scope to learn in their own time and in their own environment. With The Learning Connexion, you can study creativity and art from anywhere around the world!

Study from home students are each assigned a personal mentor who will help guide them through their chosen programme and provide feedback on their artwork. Each student will also have access to TLC’s comprehensive video resources and programme materials.

In addition to this, distance students can also attend on-site classes at The Learning Connexion campus.

International students We welcome students from all over the world!

Students from outside New Zealand often choose to move to Wellington – ‘The coolest little capital in the world’ - for the duration of their programme, enrolling as an on-site student.

International students also have the option of studying from their home country, or anywhere in the world, by distance delivery (study from home).

Corrections students The Learning Connexion welcomes study enquiries from within Corrections facilities around New Zealand. Achieving an NZQA qualification in Art and Creativity gives Corrections students valuable future skills including creative techniques, problem-solving, commitment, focus and confidence.

The Learning Connexion offers: • Block week classes: The first week of each term is known as ‘block week one’.

This is a one week intensive class where students get a good chance to really hone their skills in a particular area. The last week of each term is known as ‘block week two’. We advertise the block week two classes at the beginning of the term in which they occur.

• Weekend classes: These are a mixture of one, two or three-day workshops on weekends during the term. They are full day classes (10.00am - 4.30pm with a half hour lunch break).

• Evening classes: We offer various evening classes, (6.00pm - 9.00pm) each term, for the duration of seven weeks.

Entry requirements and recognition of prior learning TLC’s New Zealand Certificate in Creativity (level 4) programme is ‘open entry’ and no previous experience is needed to enrol in this programme. Students wanting to enrol into the New Zealand Diploma in Creativity programmes at levels 5 and 6 are required to either complete the Certificate at (at level 4) or submit a portfolio for assessment as part of the recognition of prior learning (RPL) process.

A portfolio needs to include at least six finished artworks that shows competence at the appropriate Diploma level in at least three types of visual media, e.g. drawing, painting and sculpture as well as the processes used to create the work, e.g. designs, experiments, samples, models and/or sketches.

The portfolio also needs to include evidence of any relevant qualifications already achieved, a brief written outline of previous creative experience and a written statement outlining the level you would like to skip, and why.

In addition to submitting a portfolio, applicants for the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced, level 7) are required to participate in an interview, the results of which become part of the application process.

The fine print Fees 2018 • All fees are GST inclusive and in New Zealand dollars if studying in New Zealand • All fees are for 2018 enrolments • For part-time students the fees for the second year of study are subject to change • Fees stated depend upon students qualifying for the funding subsidy. This is available, minus a few exceptions, to any New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. This includes permanent residents and Australian citizens living in New Zealand who meet minimum residency requirements • If a student’s full-time status changes during their period of study, fees will be adjusted accordingly Minors Persons under 18 years of age are legally classified as minors. When minors apply for enrolment the enrolment contract must be co-signed by a parent or guardian.

In addition, proof of guardianship is required. Persons under 16 years of age must meet Ministry of Education criteria. Contact us for more information on how to enrol a minor.

International students • All fees are for 2018 enrolments • Immigration New Zealand only issues a student visa to international students who study full-time • International students must pay fees in full to be eligible for a study visa 37

In accordance with section 236A of the Education Act 1989 and subsequent amendments, The Learning Connexion Ltd has an approved Trust Account for Student Fee Protection and Student Fee Indemnification. The Trust Account is administered by Peter Nankivell of Count On Us Ltd.

Payment options Cash payment: Students can pay tuition fees via cash, credit card, cheque or bank transfer. Full payment must be made no later than the first day of the student’s programme.

Time payment: The Learning Connexion accepts time payment from domestic students only. The finance rate applied is 10%. Tuition fees, for the level in which the student is enrolled, must be fully paid before final assessment.

Withdrawal from a programme Students may withdraw with a full refund of tuition fees from the programme they have enrolled in, within eight days of the starting date of their programme.

After that time, The Learning Connexion has no obligation to make any refund.

Students must apply for a programme withdrawal in writing and notify StudyLink of the change in their status. Refunds for overseas students will be made at the exchange rate on the day the withdrawal is approved for action.

Student loans and allowances StudyLink is the New Zealand Government Department which manages loans and allowances for tertiary students studying in New Zealand. They can assist students with fees, programme related costs and living expenses.

Both part-time and full-time students at The Learning Connexion may be eligible for a Student Loan. Contact StudyLink to see if you qualify, or for more information on 0800 889 900 or at www.studylink.govt.nz.

Note that students need to be studying full-time to receive a Student Allowance.

Additional costs Students will need to budget for purchasing any materials beyond the materials credit they first receive. This cost will be dependent on the type and scale of work they choose to do. The range of material costs is typically between $NZ10 and $NZ50 per week for full-time students (amounts may vary).

If students live outside of New Zealand, their programme study resources parcel may be subjected to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the country in which they live. These charges are the recipient’s responsibility. Note also that customs policies vary widely from country to country.

Students are advised to contact their local customs office to find out if there will be associated costs when picking up their parcels. The monetary value of programme supplies parcels is available from materials@tlc.ac.nz.

FAQ What’s different about The Learning Connexion programmes?

Our programmes are student-centric and flexible, allowing students to develop creativity skills in a way that has real meaning to them. We provide a safe and positive environment in which your creativity can prosper. If you work hard and commit yourself fully to your programme, you will succeed.

Do I have to be academically minded?

Our qualifications are all ‘hands-on’ programmes. There are no written exams.

Research and critical analysis are part of the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) programme. The programmes can be explored in a variety of ways to suit your individual learning style.

Can I do any of TLC’s programmes without previous art experience?

Yes. Our Certificate programme is aimed at helping students achieve a viable level of artistic skill. It is also an opportunity to try out a range of artistic disciplines. The more you use your skills, the better they will become! See page 16 for more information.

What sort of career can I expect after completing my programme?

The creativity skills you develop at The Learning Connexion can be transferred to many fields. We encourage students to do what they love for a living, continue to develop their natural talent, and look for a market niche that suits them. If your ideal job doesn’t exist, create it!

Potential career fields include: entrepreneur, advertising, project management and administration, professional art, costume designer, craftsperson, film or television producer, florist, graphic designer, hairdresser, illustrator, scenic painter, interior and landscape designer, jeweller, mason, photographer, screen printer, signwriter, tattoo artist, working in theatre/film production and design.

Do you recognise previous training or experience in art?

Yes. If you have previous experience or qualifications you can apply to skip our Certificate level and apply for direct entry to Diploma, Honours or Advanced levels. You will need to submit a portfolio for assessment. Entry to any programme level will be at the discretion of the Academic Board. See page 37 for more information.

Can I put my programme on hold and take a term off?

You cannot put your programme on hold once you are enrolled. In some cases we may be able to grant an extension, but only where there are extenuating circumstances. You can take a break between programme levels, i.e. between Certificate and Diploma.

Do I need to purchase anything?

Yes. This is dependent upon the classes you take and your personal artistic goals.

Every student enrolled at TLC is able to purchase art supplies from our materials shop. See page 08 for more information.

Can I study part-time and work to support myself?

Yes, you can study any of our four qualifications part-time or full-time. This gives you the opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills while meeting existing personal commitments (e.g. work and family). See page 32 for more information.
