Creativit y – save yourself, save the world Entertainment is fun. It’s a diversion from whatever is bothering us. In a world full of bother there has to be a lot of entertainment. That’s why we invented social media and we can now exchange more funny cat pictures than at any other time in human history.

This story is not entertaining, although here’s a cat doing a creative workout.

And now for the heavy lifting. One of the things most often lost in schools is confidence.

Not surprising if you have a system that’s competitive, obsessed with standardised testing and generates ‘winners’ and ‘also-rans’.

Maybe schools are really good for about a third of the students and manageable for another third. For the rest, they are somewhere between ‘boring’ and ‘disastrous’.

If they were a production line for cars they’d be closed down because they’re so unreliable.

As it happens, I was in the first group until age 17, achieved excellent marks and then became a semi-dropout. I focused on art because it was the only area where I could be myself. Then I went to art school and found that they wanted me to be someone else. I dropped out again and ended up at Teachers College in Palmerston North.

Sometimes you arrive at a miracle and that’s how it was for me at PNTC. The college treated students as real people. The courses were open-ended and exploratory, a creative adventure. It was the sort of education I could relate to.

The educators* behind the college were as spectacular as Sir Edmund Hillary (now on the money), but they didn’t climb Mt Everest and weren’t household names. Their achievements were allowed to fade into history when educational politics shifted back to money and control.

The good news is that the legacy is alive and well at TLC. The fundamentals are as relevant as ever and we’ve evolved them to fit today’s needs.

We’re concerned with getting great results for everyone. We’ve thrown out parts of orthodox teaching that get in the way. TLC has no compulsory lectures. No grading (just ‘completed’ and ‘yet to complete’). No essays, unless you choose to write on your own subject.

No classes, unless you want to attend. No need to visit the campus (you can study from anywhere). Sounds so easy, but it’s a lot harder than obediently doing what you’re told.

We focus on one-to-one tutor engagement; plenty of sharing of student ideas; sustainability (including being savvy about money); transferable skills and learning by doing. Most of our ‘doing’ relates to art processes which is why we’re best known as an art school. The truth is that our creativity approach crosses over to any area where new thinking is important. We’re offering ‘whole’ education that starts with you and your own experience.

If it sounds too good to be true, unfortunately that’s the same scepticism that shifted education to being a supplier of graduates to industry. Let’s get past that. Let’s focus on making creativity happen. Let’s develop skills that will be relevant regardless of which jobs are taken over by robots. Let’s build communities in which humanity matters more than bar codes.

Let’s restore trust and confidence.

Our style of teaching is to draw out, rather than to stuff things in.

By drawing from your life experiences we enable you to develop your individual creativity and see how this relates to the wider community. We focus on learning by doing so our programmes are hands-on and practical. Our mission is to achieve sustainable creativity for every single student.

NZQA qualifications

The Learning Connexion is a Category 1 provider, which means that we provide some of the highest standards of training available from a New Zealand academic provider. We offer accredited tertiary level, NZQA approved qualifications in art and creativity.

All of our programmes are student-centric, hands-on, and emphasise collaboration and connections between creativity, the process of art making and the wider field of creative application.

During their course of study students, working closely with their tutors and mentors, develop creative ideas to explore. Students gain a creativity and art education that embraces personal choice and gives them the hard and soft skills necessary to become a successful, professional, practicing artist.

All of our programmes are supported with on-site classes, distance learning resources and supervised independent study and research.

Creativity: Thinking for a change (CTFAC) | Rachelle Smith, Leo Semau and Sarah Brock

Entry requirements and recognition of prior learning While our Certificate (level 4) programme is open entry (no previous experience needed), students wanting to enrol into programmes above the Certificate level are required to submit a portfolio for admission.

A portfolio needs to include artwork that shows competence in at least three types of visual media, e.g. drawing, painting and 3D, as well as the processes used to create the work, e.g. designs and sketches. Evidence of any relevant qualifications already achieved and a brief written outline of previous creative experience is requested.

In addition to submitting a portfolio, applicants for the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced level) are also required to participate in an interview, the results of which become part of the application process.

No exams!

Anyone who’s crammed for a test the day before realises how futile exams and tests can be.

We’d rather you had real skills so you can ‘make it’ out there, where it matters most. That’s why we assess student progress via real creative work. We’ve found this approach to be far more effective and student-friendly.

Creativity for all Not sure if you’re ready for study?

You can try our programmes out by registering as a casual student for one of our on-site classes or booking into one of our free Creativity Workshops. Our workshops are run throughout New Zealand. They give you the opportunity to work alongside one of our tutors who will gently guide you through our unique and valuable creativity techniques. For more study options see page 25.

The Certificate programme focuses on the exploration, experimentation and building of key skills in art and creativity. It is a structured hands-on, practical introduction programme for those with little or no practical art experience.

Certificate students complete an introductory section (this is compulsory) and then select their majors and minors from 3D, drawing, painting, design, photography, computer graphics and videography.

Entry Requirements: Commitment, and the ability to maintain studies, are key prerequisites for all our qualifications. Students entering into the Certificate programme do not need to have any art experience or prior qualifications.

Diploma of Art and Creativity (NZQA Level 5)

1 year full-time (30 hours per week)

The Diploma of Art and Creativity programme focuses on increasing each student's focus and level of self-direction. Students develop a solid skill base, aligning their creative processes and personal interests by producing professional work in line with their own goals. They write their own briefs and create work to exhibit which shows an increasing level of creative continuity and technical prowess.

Entry Requirements: Students enrolling in the Diploma of Art and Creativity (level 5) need to have completed the Certificate of Art and Creativity (level 4) or equivalent qualification or apply for recognition of prior learning (see page 10 for further information). *See page 51 – 53 for more information about fees and enrolment details.

Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) (NZQA Level 6)

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours)(level 6) is a two and a half year programme that includes three stages; Stage 1: **Certificate of Art and Creativity (6 months full-time or 1 year parttime) (see page 12) Stage 2: **Diploma of Art and Creativity (1 year full-time or 2 years part-time) (see page 12) Stage 3: **Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) (1 year full-time or 2 years part-time) Majors and Minors: 3D, drawing, painting, design, photography, computer graphics, videography.

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) programme encourages students to be self-driven. Work will reveal the emergence of a personal style and a strong level of technical skill.

Students write their own briefs and undertake more independent study and self-direction. They are encouraged to continue to participate in school exhibitions, but will begin to share their work with the public through selfinitiated group shows and publications.

As a guideline, a full-time student will complete three major works (or the equivalent) per term and include supporting material that demonstrates their creative process.

Entry Requirements: Prospective students enrolling in the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) (level 6) who are starting with the Certificate of Art and Creativity (Level 4) do not need to have any art experience or prior qualifications. Progression through the programme is achieved by successful completion of the previous level.

Those wishing to enter into the programme part way through must apply for recognition of prior learning for that stage (see page 10 for more information). *See page 51 – 53 for more information about fees and enrolment details. **The programme fees are paid for at the start of each level.

Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) (NZQA Level 7)

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) programme builds on students’ existing skill base, focusing on art as a process with studio-based work developed from projects, briefs and independent research.

Students engage with ideas and practices that demonstrate the materials, methods and understanding of the concepts crucial to the meaning of the work. Students are expected to produce a body of experimental work for weekly studio critique and create several major works for exhibition.

Students will find their assumptions challenged and their art opened to a practice that is engaging both creatively and intellectually. They will develop new ways of viewing materials, a fresh approach to critiquing art and a deeper understanding of their own practice and how it relates within the broader spectrum of modernist and contemporary art.

Note that the structure of the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) differs from the Diploma and Honours levels in that it is structured around modules and projects that relate to all media, rather than courses which require the selection of majors and minors.

Our programmes are multi-disciplinary. We encourage students to work across media and find the best way to communicate their ideas while honing technical skills.

Students explore and experiment with themes from history and current practice.

They also explore and develop understanding of the creative process.

Students studying creativity and art programmes at The Learning Connexion indicate their main areas of interest by selecting from the following courses: 3D, drawing, painting, design, photography, computer graphics and video/ multimedia.

What students select will guide the classes they will focus on and the resources that they will need as they work through their programme. There is plenty of flexibility for students to develop their own creative journey.

3D incorporates sculptural practices ranging from traditional casting processes to contemporary approaches that include mixed media and installation.

Finished works can range in scale from the tiny to the megalithic. Including media as varied as soft stone, clay, plaster, wood, wire, wax, bronze, glass and metals.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS

Computer graphics is for students who want to specialise in graphic design and explore how to shape creative concepts using computer-based technology and industry standard software.

Students learn how to manipulate photographic imagery, create digital illustrations and work with more traditional graphic design processes. For example, students can develop technical digital skills which could be linked with other art techniques to create images ready for use in printmaking classes and large format prints.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Digital painting, illustration and collage • Photo retouching and image manipulation • Typographical layout • Promotional material (including posters, flyers and business cards) • Interface design • Character design • Creating source material for animation • Producing visual material for video 19

Design explores the application of art in a commercial setting and teaches students ‘visual literacy’. This course incorporates a range of media including photography, computer graphics, drawing and painting.

Students will develop the ability to interpret information and communicate this to an audience visually.

Drawing is one of the most fundamental ways of learning how to see a subject and is an invaluable tool for developing ideas and concepts. Explore drawing and mark marking using charcoal, pencil, crayon, chalk pastel, ink, dye or watercolour.

Specific tuition is available in observational drawing, drawing from life and expressive gestural drawing.

Painting offers students an opportunity to develop a wide range of skills around wet media. Students will explore and experiment with colour, composition, materials and techniques to discover which processes best suit their creative goals. Work with wet media acrylics, pastels, gouache, oil paint and watercolour.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Realistic painting (including photographic components) • Super-realism • Illusions and combinations of literal and abstract • Abstract painting (including expression, imagination, abstraction, energy fields, dynamic surfaces) • Action painting, visual messages and integration with words • Painting for sets, film and animation • Illustration “I discovered the enjoyment of studying art. With new technology, photography is becoming an increasingly accessible and flexible medium.

Students can explore portraiture, documentary, studio photography, pinhole and photogram techniques and the use of photography for archiving and marketing artwork made in other media. The creative potential is limitless when linking the art of photography with other courses and classes* such as printmaking, design and computer graphics.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Portrait • Studio • Panoramic • Photographic collages • Photojournalism and story narratives • Photograms • Landscape photography (including sea and skyscapes) • Exploration of subject matter (e.g. the human body, animals, subconscious ideas and still-life) • Experimental and abstract photography • The use of photography to create multimedia artworks • Documenting artwork 23

Moving images are used to explore and develop ideas within a digital world. Students will undertake a range of technical classes and creative technology workshops in documentary, music video, drama, experimental video and animation.

Students script and tell stories in documentary or drama genres, extend painting and drawing skills through the use of animation, or transfer video skills into installation and non-narrative video works of art.

Creative applications may include (but are not limited to): • Storyboarding • Concept development of characters • Documentaries • Narrative dramas • Music videos • Animation (flip books, thaumatropes, loops, stop-motion, hand-drawn frames) • Experimental video (video collage, found footage work

S t udy O p t ions The Learning Connexion’s goal is to provide a pathway of learning which best suits the individual needs of each student within an inclusive learning environment. We offer options for on-site or distance study from home. All of our programmes can be completed full-time or part-time and we also offer short classes for casual students.

These flexible study options give our students the opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills while meeting existing personal commitments (e.g. work and family).

Full-time study requires a commitment of 30 hours of work per week.

Part-time study requires a commitment of 15 hours of work per week.

Study on-site Studying on-site provides a vibrant, supportive community that enhances creativity with students having access to the wide range of facilities available at The Learning Connexion.

Students can attend weekend, block and evening classes in addition to their main weekday classes. Daily contact with staff and other students offers quick and easy feedback about ideas and processes. Many new friendships continue beyond the programme and we see students collaborating on projects long after they have graduated.

On-site weekday classes run from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Study from home Distance delivery (study from home) is offered in a variety of ways to meet student needs. This gives students the scope to learn in their own time and in their own environment. With The Learning Connexion, you can study creativity and art from anywhere around the world!

Study from home students are each assigned a personal mentor who will help guide them through their chosen programme and provide feedback on their artwork. Each student will also have access to TLC’s comprehensive video resources and course materials.

In addition to this, distance students can also attend on-site classes at The Learning Connexion campus.

Students from outside New Zealand often choose to move to Wellington – ‘The coolest little capital in the world’ for the duration of their programme, enrolling as an on-site student. Read about Gwee Poh Hee, an international student from Singapore (see page 45) who made the decision to come to New Zealand to study creativity and art.

International students also have the option of studying from their home country, or anywhere in the world, by distance delivery (study from home).

Corrections students The Learning Connexion welcomes study enquiries from within Corrections facilities around New Zealand. Achieving an NZQA qualification in Art and Creativity gives Corrections students valuable future skills, including creative techniques, problem-solving, commitment, focus and confidence.

Creativity: Thinking for a Change (CTFAC) 2016

Casual classes Classes at The Learning Connexion are available to the public.

The Learning Connexion produces a class booklet four times a year with full details of classes available for each term. For a list of our classes on offer, or for more information regarding costs and how to register, please visit our website at www.tlc.ac.nz The Learning Connexion offers: • Block Week Classes: The first week of each term is known as ‘Block Week One’. This is a one week intensive class where students get a good chance to really hone their skills in a particular area. The last week of each term is known as ‘Block Week Two’. We advertise the Block Week Two classes at the beginning of the term in which they occur.

In our ceramics studio students can create sculptural forms from earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, paper clays and a variety of raku clay bodies which are available.

Master a simple set of hand-building techniques, turn creative ideas into three dimensional clay forms and fire them (bake them) in our electric and raku kilns.

Use our pottery wheels, large clay extruder, wedging table, hand-building turntables, as well as wet cutting, polishing and grinding areas and learn to master a sand blaster. We have a wax room with hot wax facilities, soldering irons, caulking guns and steam-out equipment.

Students in the open studio sculpture classes and the mould-making class can pursue projects in cast glass.

The Learning Connexion offers beginner classes for artists wanting to develop an online portfolio and explore the marketing of their work, up to more advanced classes for those wanting to explore how to shape visual concepts and specialise further in digital media.

Explore your creativity and craftsmanship through the transformative qualities of fire. Our main hot arts area contains a foundry for melting and casting bronze and other metals, as well as a welding and fabrication studio for creating and assembling metal sculptures. Use our blacksmith studio to soften steel and forge a seriously sharp knife or try your hand at decorative ironwork.

Here, students can design and create their own storybook characters within imaginary worlds, produce cartoons, posters and graphic novels and learn how to present quality finished illustrations to real-world, industry driven deadlines.

Each class encourages students to strengthen their visual problem-solving skills by understanding and applying core design principles through the use of a wide range of media and drawing techniques.

Design development, as well as marketing of work, is an integral part of any jewellery class.

There are Macs and PCs available to download, optimize and digitally manipulate images. Students use our traditional wet darkroom to process black and white films and make hand printed black and white prints.

Our printmaking studio gives students the space and opportunity to create and reproduce their own unique images, forms and markings.

Students are encouraged to build upon other classes such as drawing, painting, photography and computer graphics. Come and learn creative techniques such as etching, polyester plate lithography, monotype, screenprinting, bookbinding and collagraphy. Our studio uses non-toxic material practices where possible.

There are four computers available for student use with swipe key access to an A3 colour photocopier. Videos can be viewed within the library itself or at home. These are available to on-site and distance learning students and can be ordered online from our video library. Books are available as on-site reference material only for students.

The Learning Connexion materials shop sells art materials to students and the public.

Every student enrolled with The Learning Connexion is allocated an account from which they can purchase materials.

As part of their programme fees, an initial amount is credited to this account.

• Part-time Diploma/Honours/Advanced students receive $100 credit • Full-time Diploma/Honours/Advanced students receive a $200 credit • For Certificate students, the materials credit is used to purchase your starter kit and will be automatically deducted. The starter kit will be sent out to all distance delivery students (who should receive their materials in the week before their programme start date). Onsite students will be given their starter kits during our Creativity: Thinking for a Change orientation week.

Throughout the year students are expected to participate in public TLC exhibitions. This helps students build confidence and understand how their work is connecting with a wider audience. They learn a range of relevant skills from how to prepare work for an exhibition, what to exhibit, right through to the basics of setting themselves up for selling work within a gallery or online.

You are not just a part of nature. You are nature. You must re-create yourself and be creative and imaginative. Every day.

Art is one of the most important things that humankind should be doing. Connect to art and through art to others.”

Isaac Bishara’s friends call him Zack. He’s a bona fide, grassroots Kiwi man who works and lives for his community. He has a strong interest in healing the body and the soul and is looking for ways in which to amplify his own voice and effect real change in society. His involvement in the community has already brought Zack into contact with a wide variety of cultures, people and ideas.

Zack is working on developing his own whānau whakapapa to connect his community of relatives with those who no longer have a physical connection to their marae. His art-making is a living embodiment of himself and his ancestors.

Diploma of Art and Creativity Honours programme student “The most valuable thing I’ve learned so far isn’t skills or technique – it’s confidence.”

Making time to work on her lifestyle block whilst studying has been a walk in the park (or should that be, on the farm) for painter and ceramic artist, Ailene Cuthbertson. She studies art from home via distance learning to fit art making around her full-time job and her way of living.

Being in her own environment helps her find a natural pace and seasonal rhythm to the way she sculpts and paints. She’s able to experiment with an art routine that works in with her individual creative process.

Ailene’s artwork is very personal – self-portraits of heroines she wishes she could’ve been when she was bullied as a teenager at school. The most valuable thing that she’s learned through her studies so far has been about building her confidence and learning to be true to herself.

STUDENT | Not everything is black and white

Morrigan Smith

Diploma of Art and Creativity Honours Programme student “It’s not easy to stand up and be yourself. My art is the sum of all of my experience, my knowledge, my tastes, my everything...”

Morrigan Smith looks to find his own personal power and inner truth through art. His art making is a reflection of himself – a balance of the masculine and the feminine, mirroring who he is as an individual, where neither is more nor less important than the other – they merely offer two very necessary parts of one being.

Over time, Morrigan’s art had become mechanical, robotic. The tools of his trade had got in the way. He made the difficult decision to reset; to start from scratch and imbue all of himself into making art. His portrait subjects are now androgynous, neither strongly male or purely female. Nothing so black and white.

As a viewer you want to step up to them and ask: Who are you? What kind of world do you inhabit? It is as though you are viewing something private and personal, an intimately raw moment in their life.

box…and Singapore Gwee Poh Hee

Diploma of Art and Creativity programme graduate “My job now is to do my drawing, my painting and my art classes.”

From the fast paced metropolitan shores of Singapore to the laid back ‘she’ll be right’ Kiwi lifestyle, international student Gwee Poh Hee stepped out of everyday life and across vast oceans.

A qualified secondary school art teacher from Singapore, Poh Hee stopped drawing and painting twenty years ago. Now retired and with a grown up family at home, she wanted to put herself and her artistic ambitions first.

Poh Hee selected The Learning Connexion School of Creativity and Art in New Zealand as her preferred place to study. Here, she was able to focus on her training, and pick up where she had left her painting skills twenty years ago.

Already a capable artist, Poh Hee was challenged to move into new areas with her painting. She experimented and painted with oils, and tried out acrylics – paint types completely new to her and very different mediums in comparison to the watercolour painting she did back home.

into the extraordinarily pretty Ben Smith

Diploma of Art and Creativity Honours programme student and graduate “Defy convention and don’t do boring art!”

Making things well and finding beauty in what most might think weird or disgusting is what Ben does best. He creates wearable sculptures and contemporary pieces of jewellery.

Growing up as a black-teed bogan from West Auckland, Ben Smith learned early on to trust his gut. He knew that he would have to carve out his own direction in life. And he has. From cruising the streets of West Auckland in dodgy, lowered vehicles, to residing in the student town of Dunedin, Ben has lived the classic storybook life of a struggling artist.

‘Embracing change’ is how Ben describes his personal art style. His ornamental artwork reflects a restless drive and passion for the unusual. Each of his pieces has a tale to tell and reveals deeper layers of meaning throughout its design. His jewellery is multi-functional and contains things like movable arms, glow in the dark plastic, brightly coloured possum fur, possum teeth, fake grass, mother of pearl, bone and ebony.

Jacqueline Siegenthaler

Diploma of Art and Creativity Advanced programme student and graduate “I absolutely loved TLC’s student centred approach!”

Jacqueline Siegenthaler embarked upon her love of learning by studying creativity and art from home (via distance delivery) through The Learning Connexion. She credits each of TLC’s programmes with its own dynamics in being instrumental to getting her to where she is now.

At TLC Jacqueline explored areas of creativity she had always wanted to by setting her own goals and creating her own briefs. Her old habits of creating were turned upside down. She even designed her own art studio! Jacqueline learnt how creative experiences could become integrated and transferred into everyday life, other fields of work, or further studies.

Since graduating, Jacqueline has produced new artwork, all of which is built upon the strong foundation she received at TLC. She has helped teach stone carving to people with special needs, and is currently working on her Master’s thesis - 'An investigation into the physicality of paint and its structural integrity by applying the techniques of crochet and knitting'.

Marama Hotere

Diploma of Art and Creativity Honours programme student and graduate “I’m collecting all these skills and want to piece them together.”

Raranga mahi artist Marama Hotere treads a flax strewn path at The Learning Connexion. A harakeke artist, she is bringing the traditional practice of flax weaving into the more contemporary areas which TLC offers the freedom to explore.

Brought up with traditional Te Ao Mārama (a Maori world view), everything Marama knew, and identified with, was based upon a strong culture of tradition and protocol. She is now redefining her position, her creative art style, and where she is at in the world by exploring alternative ways of thinking and creating taking traditional cultural practices and fusing them with creative training.

Marama learnt the traditional skills of kete weaving (raranga mahi) with flax from her raranga teacher at her local wānanga. These skills provide the foundation and groundwork for her more explorative, creative work at The Learning Connexion.

Oli Gedye

Diploma of Art and Creativity Advanced programme student and graduate “I infuse creativity into everything I do. I believe art is not limited to any medium, but can be an element of life that permeates all we do.”

Bohemian sculpture artist, Oli Gedye, makes meditative artwork using kinetic art principles. Sculptures that combine the rich colours and raw textures of nature with the sounds of the forest. Art that draws upon trees, wood, stones, rivers, mountains, valleys and moss – a melding together of the intrinsic connection between nature and creativity.

Oli works from an isolated old house truck set amidst forested Anatoki Valley. It’s not uncommon for him to have several projects on the go at once, in a constant state of creative chaos around the late night glow of a campfire.

His collection of work called ‘Earth Tone’ combines materials with the idea of sound as a sense alternative to vision. “Musical instruments are some of the most elegant objects made by people. The shape of a cello is beautiful to the eye but its shape is designed for sound. I am fascinated by the sounds different shapes produce and my works are a playful exploration of that.”

TLC currently employs over 70 staff, teaching approximately 700 students across New Zealand and around the world.

Our tutors and mentors are all practising artists. They bring real world expertise from their respective creative industries to their roles. Passionate about art and creativity, they are enthusiastic teachers who love seeing their students grow in confidence and develop their skills.

Tutors run classes on campus and assist students in developing and achieving their personal artistic goals. Our tutors’ professional knowledge and hands-on technical skills are passed on to their students. Tutors facilitate regular class group critiques as students develop the ability to articulate and self-critique their work and support others.

Mentors work closely, one-on-one, with distance delivery students to support their individual needs. All students are assigned a mentor who works with them throughout their programme, guiding their development and giving individual feedback and suggesting study resources.

The fineprint Fees 2017 • All fees are GST inclusive and in New Zealand dollars if studying in New Zealand • All fees are for 2017 enrolments • For part-time students the fees for the second year of study are subject to change • Fees stated depend upon students qualifying for the funding subsidy. This is available, minus a few exceptions, to any New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. This includes permanent residents and Australian citizens living in New Zealand who meet minimum residency requirements • If a student’s full-time status changes during their period of study, fees will be adjusted accordingly International students: • All fees are for 2017 enrolments • Immigration New Zealand only issues a student visa to international students who study full-time • International students must pay fees in full to be eligible for a student visa 52

In accordance with section 236A of the Education Act 1989 and subsequent amendments, The Learning Connexion Ltd has an approved Trust Account for Student Fee Protection and Student Fee Indemnification. The Trust Account is administered by Peter Nankivell of Count On Us Ltd.

Payment options Cash payment: Students can pay tuition fees via cash, credit card, cheque or bank transfer. Full payment must be made no later than the first day of the student’s programme.

Time payment: The Learning Connexion accepts time payment from domestic students only. The finance rate applied is 10%. Tuition fees, for the level in which the student is enrolled, must be fully paid before final assessment.

Withdrawal from a Programme: Students can withdraw with a full refund of tuition fees from the programme they have enrolled in, within eight days of the starting date of their programme. After that time, The Learning Connexion has no obligation to make any refund. Students must apply for a programme withdrawal in writing and notify StudyLink of the change in their status. Refunds for overseas students will be made at the exchange rate on the day the withdrawal is approved for action.

Additional costs Students will need to budget for purchasing any materials beyond the materials credit they first receive. This cost will be dependent on the type and scale of work they choose to do. The range of material costs is typically between $NZ10 and $NZ50 per week for full-time students (amounts may vary).

If students live outside of New Zealand, their programme study resources parcel may be subjected to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the country in which they live. These charges are the recipient’s responsibility. Note also that customs policies vary widely from country to country.

Students are advised to contact their local customs office to find out if there will be associated costs when picking up their parcels. The monetary value of programme supplies parcels is available from materials@tlc.ac.nz.

Minors Persons under 18 years of age are legally classified as minors. When minors apply for enrolment the enrolment contract must be co-signed by a parent or guardian.

In addition, proof of guardianship is required. Persons under 16 years of age must meet Ministry of Education criteria. Contact us for more information on how to enrol a minor.

Students should discuss their personal needs with the admissions staff when they enrol to ensure they receive the appropriate support. The Learning Connexion is very experienced in needs-based learning and our staff and programmes are responsive to the daily challenges faced by our diverse group of students.

We have a learning support staff member on-site who is available to offer advice and support to help students achieve a positive and successful learning experience. This includes help with study skills and understanding of programme requirements.

While students cannot put their programme on hold once they have enrolled, they can take a break between programme levels, i.e. between Certificate and Diploma and between years if they are a part-time student (i.e. year one and year two).

In some cases we may be able to grant an extension, but only where there are extenuating circumstances.

Deaf and hearing impaired students The Learning Connexion welcomes Deaf and hearing-impaired students.

Students can study from home (distance delivery) with our English subtitled video resources. Our mentors offer a range of flexible communication options to suit Deaf and hearing-impaired students’ needs.

Student loans and allowances StudyLink is the New Zealand Government Department which manages loans and allowances for tertiary students studying in New Zealand. They can assist students with fees, programme related costs and living expenses.

Note that students need to be studying full-time to receive a Student Allowance.

Creative art classes for children Held on our vibrant Taita campus, we provide children with several unforgettable, authentic art school experiences.

Art classes for kids: Creative art classes for kids run for a full term and offer kids a range of interesting and fun projects. They are designed to be lots of fun – encouraging experimentation, imagination and lots of spontaneity in a safe and creative environment.

Weekly classes include, but are not limited to, 3D sculptural creations, animation, filmmaking, photography, printmaking, painting and drawing. Kids also have the opportunity to exhibit their work at our end of term exhibition.

FAQ What’s different about The Learning Connexion programmes?

Our programmes are student-centric and flexible, allowing students to develop creative skills in a way that has real meaning to them. We provide a safe and positive environment in which your creativity can prosper. If you work hard and commit yourself fully to your programme, you will succeed.

Do I have to be academically minded?

Our qualifications are all ‘hands-on’ programmes. There are no written exams.

Research and critical analysis are part of the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) programme. The programmes can be explored in a variety of ways to suit your individual learning style.

Can I do any of TLC’s programmes without previous art experience?

Yes. Our Certificate programme is aimed at helping students achieve a viable level of artistic skill; it is also an opportunity to try out a range of artistic disciplines. The more you use your skills, the better they will become!

What sort of career can I expect after completing my programme?

The creativity skills you develop at The Learning Connexion can be transferred to many fields. We encourage students to do what they love for a living, continue to develop their natural talent, and look for a market niche that suits them. If your ideal job doesn’t exist, create it!

Potential career fields include: entrepreneur, advertising, project management and administration, professional art, costume designer, craftsperson, film or television producer, florist, graphic designer, hairdresser, illustrator, scenic painter, interior and landscape designer, jeweller, mason, photographer, screen printer, signwriter, tattoo artist, working in theatre/film production and design.

Do you recognise previous training or experience in art?

Yes. If you have previous experience or qualifications you can apply to skip our Certificate level and apply for direct entry to Diploma, Honours or Advanced levels. You will need to submit a portfolio for assessment. Entry to any programme level will be at the discretion of the Academic Board. See page 10 for more information.

Can I put my programme on hold and take a term off?

You cannot put your programme on hold once you are enrolled. In some cases we may be able to grant an extension, but only where there are extenuating circumstances. You can take a break between programme levels, i.e. between Certificate and Diploma and between years if you are a part-time student (i.e. year one and year two).

Do I need to purchase anything?

Yes. This is dependent upon the classes you take and your personal artistic goals.

Every student enrolled at TLC is able to purchase art supplies from our materials shop. See page 53 for more information.

Can I study part-time and work to support myself?

Yes, you can study any of our four qualifications part-time or full-time. This gives you the opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills while meeting existing personal commitments (e.g. work and family). See page 25 for more information.

Can I get a Student Loan and/or Student Allowance?

TLC encourages all students to make direct contact with other students. You can contact other students through our peer contact list, which is available on request. Students can keep up-to-date with what’s going on at TLC through our social media sites Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, or in person at our regularly held student exhibitions.
