Kia ora Welcome to The Learning Connexion. We’re pleased to bring you another term of inspiring and hands-on classes in the visual arts, here at our colourful campus. Whether you’re a currently enrolled student, or coming along as a casual student just wanting to join some classes, we’re sure you’ll find something to tempt you to explore your creativity. This booklet gives you a brief insight into the content of the weekend, evening and kids classes that we run. You’ll find more in-depth information on our website, www.tlc.ac.nz, under ‘Study with Us’.
Creative Art Classes for Kids We run creative art classes for kids after school, during term time, and in the school holidays. Kids’ Winter Art Holiday Programme 5-12 year olds

Held one evening a week. These evening classes run for seven weeks per term. Cost to casual students: $315 per term, plus materials. Please note: Enrolled students can attend any of these classes at no extra cost except materials.

KIDS’ TERM CLASSES These classes offer kids a range of interesting, challenging and cool projects to complete. Each week kids will learn new skills, gain confidence and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor. $10 discount for return students. MONDAY CLASS

MONDAY CLASSES In this class kids will create a variety of different art projects. Each week, there will be a different activity ranging from painting,drawing, printing making, animation, sculpture, craft and more. Kids will learn new skills, gain confidence, play games and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor.
Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice. This is a great class for younger artists and is focused on experimentation, play and self expression. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.
WEDNESDAY CLASSES In this class, students will work on a variety of painting, drawing and clay projects that could include but are not limited to 3D modelling, sculpting, expressive painting, drawing from life, dioramas, papiermâché, ceramics, crochet, screenprinting, drawing, design and more! Students are encouraged to develop their own art style, to experiment and try out different techniques.

This class is designed to enhance skills in creative thinking, problem solving, dexterity and self-expression. At the end of the term, students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.
THURSDAY CLASSES Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice.
This is a great class for kids who are more 3D focused and like to work with their hands. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.

KIDS’ WINTER ART HOLIDAY PROGRAMME | 5-12 year olds Whether you are working or just need a break, The Learning Connexion’s Kids’ Holiday Programme is timed just right to keep your kids happy, engaged and having creative holiday fun! Our holiday programme is taught by two experienced and wonderfully creative tutors. Held at our vibrant Taita campus, we provide children with an unforgettable authentic art school experience. This is a hugely popular programme, so book today to secure your child’s place. Our programme is now OSCAR approved, meaning that there are WINZ subsidies available if you need help meeting costs. Enchanted Gnome Doors
UV Lava Lamps
Create a magical gnome or fairy door using wood, paint and natural materials and join us for a woodland scavenger hunt through the forest to collect Gnome treasures!
Make your own bubbly Lava Lamp that glows under UV light. Design and customize with your own colours and decorations!
Nature Crochet
Clay Tree Spirits
Learn some basic crochet patterns inspired by nature and make your own crochet or loom band jewelry.
Bring a tree spirit to life using earth clay and natural materials and learn how to design and sculpt a 3D ceramic head. There is a $5 fee if you would like your work fired in our kiln (optional).
Still Life Art
Chocolate Art
Want to improve your drawing and painting skills? In this class we will be learning how to draw from life, use value and colour. Come and create some beautiful still life images with us!
Create a variety of fancy chocolates including chocolate bliss balls to take home in a decorated box. Vegan-friendly - just let us know if you are vegan or have any dietary requirements.
Pixel Art
Expressive Painting
Learn how to make pixel art images and animate them digitally using Pixel Station. We will be using our brand new art tablets! Feel free to bring your own device!
Get messy and experiment with a range of different expressive painting techniques including squash paintings, building layers, adding textures and playing with colour.
Stick People
Home-Made Recycled Paper
Are you good at drawing stick people? Want to take your stickman drawing to the next level? In this class we will be learning how to transform 2D stick people into 3D sculptures using natural materials and hot glue!
Learn the process of making your own recycled paper. Decorate your paper with bio-glitter, flowers, plants colours and patterns!

Flax weaving
Tiny World Terrariums
Learn how to harvest and prepare harakeke and learn how to make some basic flax designs including a fish (ika) and rose (putiputi). Turn your designs into jewellery, bag tags or wall hangers.
Make your own living garden in a jar! In this class you’ll learn the basics of creating a self sustaining ecosystem in a jar. Make tiny mushrooms and creatures to make your own tiny world! Bring in your own jar or use one of ours.
Realistic Drawing
Spring Bird Feeders
Want to learn how artists make drawings look real? In this class we will be learning how to sketch and shade realistic New Zealand birds and creatures using pencils and charcoal.
Come on a bird watching tour with us and learn about the different birdlife in Lower Hutt. We will be making our own custom bird feeders including a nectar feeder and bird seed holder using recycled materials.
Plein air Watercolor Art
Pet Rocks
Get out into the fresh spring air and learn how to draw and paint the great outdoors! We will be learning techniques in plein air sketching and watercolour.
A pet rock is a great alternative for anyone who wants a pet but does not have the time or space to take care of one. In this class students will make their own pet rocks and build them a house.
Dream Catchers
Glowing Nature Houses
Do you sometimes have bad dreams? The Native American dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. Learn how to design, weave and decorate your own dream catcher to take home and catch your unwanted dreams.
Using natural materials you’ll create beautiful nature houses for the fairies or goblins in your garden. Glow in the dark paint will be used to make the houses glow at night!
Paper Puppets
2D Stop Motion Animation
Learn how to make your own poseable paper puppet. Choose an animal or human from one of our templates or design and make your own!
In this class we will be learning how to make animated movies using the stop motion studio pro app. Create 2D animations with sound using paper puppets and 2D objects.

Basic Picture Framing Leah Wynne 31st Oct - 1st Nov Learn the skills and techniques of picture framing using professional equipment with tips and advice on how to do this at home with basic tools. Bring along your artwork or sentimental pieces that you have held off framing, and create your own framing masterpiece. Suitable for all levels.
Sculpt a Wall Mounted Figure Christine Fagan 7th & 8th Nov Here is your chance to create a sculptural form using ‘bas relief ‘ technique which can be mounted on a wall for indoor or outdoor display. Explore the possibilities from textured tiles to 3D wall-mounted sculptures, then prepare your creation for firing using best practice techniques. This is an exciting and challenging class where you can learn how to prepare your work for kiln safe firing, finishing techniques and mounting. Suitable for beginners and students with some knowledge of clay.

Make a Knife Dennis Berdinner 21st & 22nd Nov & 5th Dec Ever wanted to make your own knife? In this 3 day class over two weekends, learn how to develop a design then forge and grind a piece of spring steel into a wonderful kitchen knife perfect for slicing, dicing and chopping. Note - finishing details of the knife may be required after completion of the class. Follow-up instruction will be provided, if required, during class. Suitable for all levels. Minimum age is 13, though if under 16 will need to be accompanied by a supervising caregiver or parent.

An Evening with Clay Christine Fagan | Tuesdays
Jewellery - Open Studio Natalie Halley | Tuesdays Our open studio evening class provides a relaxed environment in which you can learn or expand your jewellery making skills. As a beginner, you will learn basic techniques and the safe handling of tools. As an intermediate or advanced student, you may wish to improve your skills in a particular field of jewellery making (for example, stone setting), have a go at trying a method new to you, or continue working on your project from a daytime class. This class will suit students at all levels of jewellery making.

Have you ever wanted to have a go with one of the most fundamental mediums on the planet? Here’s your chance to create your own vessels and sculptural forms using clay. Learn some simple hand-building techniques which will enable you to construct vessels and sculptures easily. Learn basic glazing techniques with readymade glazes. This fun-filled class is suitable for beginners and students with some knowledge of clay.
Contemporary Painting and Drawing Kiran Gandhi | Wednesdays What is drawing and painting in today’s age of expansive visual media? They are vital and powerful hands-on media which can help you to manage your creative thoughts and help you to become a more effective communicator.
An Evening with Clay
These classes will help you to bring out your personal language, your story, to the best of your ability while being informed by the contemporary creative practices around you. There will be room in each session to develop your personal work and to get one to one feedback from your tutor.

REGISTRATION PROCESS Every class is open to enrolled and casual students. We cannot guarantee you a place, so early bookings are essential.
REGISTRATION FORMS To register online, visit our website - tlc.ac.nz. From the menu select ‘Study with us’ and the class type you would like to register for. Choose the class you would like to attend and click the button at the bottom of the page to fill out the registration form.

Casual students will receive confirmation of their class placement by email or post, once classes are finalised. All classes must be paid for prior to the start of the class.
Please note: All classes need a minimum number to go ahead. If a class is cancelled, we will let you know 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date. You may then either transfer to another equivalent class (subject to availability), or receive a full refund of paid class fees.
CANCELLATION POLICY Casual students If you are not able to attend a class please let us know at least 5 days before the class is due to run so that your class fees can be reimbursed. If we don’t hear from you within this time frame your refund will be reduced to 50%. We won’t be able to give refunds for cancellations received after the class has started. If there are good reasons why you have not been able to attend a class which you have paid for, we will consider your request for a refund or transfer to another class if that is possible.
Kids Term Classes If you have registered your child for a class and wish to cancel the registration, we require notice of your cancellation five days before the start of the class. Failure to do this will mean 50% of the full fee for class registration will still be charged.
Kids Holiday Art Programme Parents must give 24 hours notice if their child will not be attending booked sessions. Failure to do this will mean the full fee for day/s booked will still be charged. Booking and payment are required in advance of attendance. If you are receiving funding by an agency, please note that we do not require payment in advance unless you are aware of what your proportion of the payment will be. 13
