THE LEARNING CONNEXION School of Creativity and Art
Kia ora, nau mai to The Learning Connexion’s Term 3 Student Exhibition
S P R I N G F O RWA R D The Learning Connexion school of Creativity and Art combine holistic art thinking education with the realities of commercial practice. We encourage all our students to express their individuality and deepen their understanding of personal responsibility to themselves, to others, and to the world in which we live. Studying and learning creativity offers multiple directions in life. To be a change-maker is to think creatively. Our graduates have become artists, designers and creatives working in a wide range of disciplines from all around the globe. To learn more about our successful graduates, or become a change-maker yourself visit tlc.ac.nz or call 0800 ART POWER (278 769).
Please note: There may be strong language included in some artwork.

8 points towards sustaining yourself Great creative achievements usually hide all evidence of what happened behind the scenes. Creativity always involves mistakes, frustration and dogged persistence. One of the hidden areas is about food and shelter, often tucked behind that awkward word ‘money’. One of the goals behind TLC’s programmes is to help you earn enough money to grow your creativity. It’s simple and complex. There is no guaranteed recipe, because it is all about adapting to your own potential and the conditions of the world around you. There are many good tactics. Be patient and find ways to enjoy the bumps. Begin with no expectations.
1 | Learning about money starts with learning about yourself and others. At primary school it might be anything from participating in a play, team sports, being in a choir, helping with a collective garden and so on. Sometimes these things are seen as ‘extras’, whereas they may turn out to provide the most valuable clues about a creative career.
2 | Pay attention to where you have potential and a sense of purpose in what you’re doing. Are you a good team player? An organiser? An inspirer? A trouble shooter? Court Jester? A specialist of some sort?
If you’re desperate for cash, by all means opt for a short-term job that will help you pay the bills. Most of us end up working in situations that might not be one of our career choices. Unattractive areas of work teach a lot about the engine-room of our community. Ideally we find tolerable part-time employment that leaves us time to practice our creativity and/ or continue our studies.
3 | Look for where you can be useful. If people are excited about your art work, that’s a clue. If you could fix machinery when you were a kid, then pay attention. If you can organise friends to make a video skit, maybe you’re on the way to being a film director. Many of the most useful things aren’t part of the school curriculum because they are ‘physical’, ‘emotional’ or ‘creative’. If you can perform under pressure and have a high level of empathy, there are plenty of situations where you might thrive.
4 | Pay attention to skills that machines don’t have. Are machines taking over? Yes and no. Posties and typists have become endangered species. There are two big shifts: humans are working with machines and they are also making big headway in areas where machines aren’t competent. Keep in mind that machines are tools. I have a very clever camera, but it doesn’t know what I want to photograph. I have internet connections that spit out endless delightful images, although they are mere ghosts of actual experience. Computers are poor at ‘art’ because art connects with human experience.
5 | Recognise your learning style. In crude terms we learn through a mix of seeing, doing and hearing. There are sub-categories including order, logic, empathy, curiosity and so on. Occupations tend to be dominated by particular styles. Surgeons and motor mechanics have to be fluent in ‘doing and logic’, whereas the best shop assistants are well-organised
listeners (useful skills for surgeons, although not always their first choice).
6 | Curiosity and asking ‘Why?’ Curiosity might have killed a cat, but mostly it helps cats to successfully adapt to their world. It’s central to creativity.
7 | Look for meaning. It’s practical. Suffering the friction of meaningless employment is a good way to encourage ulcers and depression. We all find meaning in our own way. There’s an old story about three stone cutters. The first was cutting stones, the second was making money and the third was building a cathedral. What is your cathedral? Most of the small stuff then becomes less stressful.
8 | Get over the idea that money is bad. We have to come to terms with money, because starvation and homelessness aren’t helpful to creativity. There are plenty of socially positive ways to make an income. If you have overwhelming difficulty selling yourself and your work, swap roles with a creative friend. The idea is for you to help them sell their work while they in turn help you. Alternatively, explore opportunities to get your creativity ‘out there’ and pay attention to the way people respond. Sooner or later you will find a dealer or director who will help you deal with the parts of the process that you dislike. And yes, sometimes money IS bad. Monetarism has become dominant in our world. Education itself has been turned into a commodity and that’s crazy. Part of our task is to reconnect with sanity. 8 ideas are only a beginning. We’re exploring the big picture of sustainability. We keep learning and sharing. It works.
