Kia ora Welcome to The Learning Connexion. We’re pleased to bring you another term of inspiring and hands-on classes in the visual arts, here at our colourful campus. Whether you’re a currently enrolled student, or coming along as a casual student just wanting to join some classes, we’re sure you’ll find something to tempt you to explore your creativity. This booklet gives you a brief insight into the content of the weekend, evening and kids classes that we run. You’ll find more in-depth information on our website, www.tlc.ac.nz, under ‘Study with Us’.
CREATIVE ART CLASSES FOR KIDS
Thursday Class
We run creative art classes for kids after school, during term time, and in the school holidays.
23rd July – 24th September 3.30pm - 5.30pm, ages from 9 to 14 years $115 + $30 materials per term (10 weeks)
Kids’ Winter Art Holiday Programme 5-12 year olds

KIDS’ TERM CLASSES These classes offer kids a range of interesting, challenging and cool projects to complete. Each week kids will learn new skills, gain confidence and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor. $10 discount for return students. MONDAY CLASS

MONDAY CLASSES In this class kids will create a variety of different art projects. Each week, there will be a different activity ranging from painting,drawing, printing making, animation, sculpture, craft and more. Kids will learn new skills, gain confidence, play games and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor.
Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice. This is a great class for younger artists and is focused on experimentation, play and self expression. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.
WEDNESDAY CLASSES Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get your hands messy! In this class kids will use stories, music and imagination as their inspiration while they work on a variety of different ceramic projects including pottery and fanciful sculptures.
Techniques may include, but are not limited to: Learning about different types of clay from polymers, salt dough, paper clay and ceramics. Learning basic clay methods including how to make pinch, slab and coil pots, ceramics, rolling cylinders, altering shapes and applying surface textures, stamps and colors Learning 3D modeling including sculptinging and paint miniatures, 3D models, dioramas and unique sculptures.

THURSDAY CLASSES Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice.
This is a great class for kids who are more 3D focused and like to work with their hands. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.

KIDS’ WINTER ART HOLIDAY PROGRAMME | 5-12 year olds Whether you are working or just need a break, The Learning Connexion’s Kids’ Holiday Programme is timed just right to keep your kids happy, engaged and having creative holiday fun! Our holiday programme is taught by two experienced and wonderfully creative tutors. Held at our vibrant Taita campus, we provide children with an unforgettable authentic art school experience. Realistic Drawing
Ocean Clay Dioramas
Want to learn how artists make drawings look real? In this class we will be learning about sketching, shading, proportion and tone. During the class we will be sketching realistic eyes, shapes, animals and faces and more!
Learn how to sculpt with air dried polymer clay and create some colourful ocean sculptures. Learn how to make a number of different ocean animals or create your own!

Insect Art
Winter Canvas Painting
Learn about some of our native New Zealand creepy crawlies while we create some bug jar drawings, swash paintings and go on an insect scavenger hunt in the woods!
Learn some new canvas painting techniques and create your own winter landscape painting. In this class we will be trying out some new colour mixing and brush techniques and getting messy with paint.

Scratch Art
Sumi-e Ink wash painting
Learn how to create your own nature scratch art and oil resist art. We will be using oil pastels, paint and dye to create these colourful artworks in a range of different ways.
Ink wash painting, or sumi-e, is a type of East Asian brush painting that uses black ink. We will be learning some ink painting brush techniques to create some panda bamboo forest paintings, calligraphy and more!

Kaleidoscope Art
Salt Dough Pots
See the world in a new way with these colourful mirror toys! Learn how to draw vibrant mirror pattern art and make your own kaleidoscope toy
Learn how to make salt dough from scratch and create some creature pots. We will be learning about different sculpting and painting techniques.
Friday
Popsicle Stick Craft Houses
Magic Potions Class
In this class we will be making some miniature model houses out of popsicle sticks and recycled material. Learn how to design and build your own custom-made tiny house as well as creating furniture and decorations to go inside.
Learn how to brew dragon’s blood, floo powder and create your own magical potion. We will be using a variety of edible and unusual ingredients and designing our own potion labels.

Fantasyscapes
Build a Robot
In this class we will be drawing a variety of fantasy scenes from simple landscapes to enchanted forests, castles and fantasy worlds. Learn about one and two point perspective drawing and how to draw with colour and detail.
Learn how to build some simple robots and make your own moving robot arm out of recycled material.

How to draw Cartoons
Glow in the Dark Jewellery
Love to draw comics and cartoons? Come and join us and learn how to draw some cartoon characters and fantasy creatures. This term we will be looking at cartoon artist, Rebecca Sugar and Steven Universe character designs.
In this class we will be making some glow in the dark pendants and animals. Turn your creations into earrings, necklaces or a key ring for your bag!

Paper Light Sculptures
Chocolate Art
In this class we will be looking at light artist Jim Sanborn and learning how to use paper, mixed media and LED lights to create magical glowing light sculptures. Make a castle, house or a miniature light-up scene as well as some light photography.
Create a variety of fancy chocolates and some chocolate apple pops to take home in a decorated box. Vegan-friendly just let us know if you have any dietary requirements.

Slime Painting
Special FX Makeup
Learn how to make your own slime from scratch! In this class we will be painting with slime and making some glowing slime suncatchers.
Want to learn how to create realistic wounds and scars? In this class we will be using professional makeup and materials to create special FX gore! We will also be using face paint and designing a makeup look.
Friday
Watercolour Animal Art
T-shirt Screen Printing
Come and learn how to use watercolour and paint an animal of your choice. Learn how to use different watercolour techniques to create some colourful paintings.
In this class we will be learning how to silk screen our own t-shirt designs using stencils and fabric paint. Please bring a t-shirt or pillow case to print your design onto. Cotton fabrics work best.
Please note: All classes need a minimum number to go ahead. If a class is cancelled we will let you know 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date. Make Better Friends with your DSLR Leigh Mitchell-Anyon 25th & 26th July
Is your digital camera confusing? Is it holding you up from making great photos? My weekend, hands-on workshop will give you greater control of your camera with a series of practical, enjoyable photography tasks plus tutorials. Demystify the camera menu and functions. Grow your camera skills and confidence by learning how to use the manual mode. You will have the opportunity to select tasks that will benefit you the most.
Dancing with Paint Gary Freemantle 25th & 26th July
In this class we have the luxury of space within which to free up your painting approach by using your whole body with emphasis on expressive and intuitive use of form. Make broad gestures that dance and sing to create paintings that are lively and exciting to both create and look at. By remaining open to chance and serendipity we will live and paint in the moment. Try something new, experiment and discover unexpected creative possibilities. This class always produces great results and much productivity. No previous experience necessary. A great introductory class for casual students. 07
This workshop will include basic Photoshop tutorials where you will learn how to improve your photos. As a group, we will build a wall of printed images to plot progress and share successes. Suitable for all levels of skill.
Basic Picture Framing Leah Wynne 15th & 16th August
Learn the skills and techniques of picture framing using professional equipment with tips and advice on how to do this at home with basic tools. Bring along your artwork or sentimental pieces that you have held off framing, and create your own framing masterpiece. Suitable for all levels.
Sculpting a Wall Figure Christine Fagan 15th & 16th August
Here is your chance to create a sculptural form using ‘bas relief ‘ technique which can be mounted on a wall for indoor or outdoor display. Explore the possibilities from textured tiles to 3D wall-mounted sculptures, then prepare your creation for firing using best practice techniques. This is an exciting and challenging class where you can learn how to prepare your work for kiln safe firing, finishing techniques and mounting. Suitable for beginners and students with some knowledge of clay.

Torch Fired Enamelling
Make a Knife
Enamelling is one of the oldest methods used to decorate metal. By fusing a glasslike coating onto copper or silver you can create colourful and imaginative designs and take your jewellery to another level.
Ever wanted to make your own knife? In this 3 day class over two weekends, learn how to develop a design then forge and grind a piece of spring steel into a wonderful kitchen knife perfect for slicing, dicing and chopping .
Natalie Halley 22nd & 23rd August
In this exciting weekend class we will explore some straightforward techniques that can be used with torch-fired enamelling. Try mixing different colours together or using stencils and sgraffito (scratching through a top layer to expose a layer of a different colour underneath) and create some wonderful pieces. After first practising on a couple of test pieces we will then dive straight into creating simple and fun jewellery such as earrings and pendants. Suitable for all levels.

Dennis Berdinner 29th, 30th August & 12th September
Note - finishing details of the knife may be required after completion of the class. Follow-up instruction will be provided, if required, during class. Suitable for all levels. Minimum age is 13, though if under 16 will need to be accompanied by a supervising caregiver or parent.

Jewellery - Open Studio
Contemporary Painting and Drawing
Our open studio evening class provides a relaxed environment in which you can learn or expand your jewellery making skills.
What is drawing and painting in today’s age of expansive visual media? They are vital and powerful hands-on media which can help you to manage your creative thoughts and help you to become a more effective communicator.
Natalie Halley | Tuesdays
As a beginner, you will learn basic techniques and the safe handling of tools. As an intermediate or advanced student, you may wish to improve your skills in a particular field of jewellery making (for example, stone setting), have a go at trying a method new to you, or continue working on your project from a daytime class. This class will suit students at all levels of jewellery making.
Kiran Gandhi | Wednesdays
These classes will help you to bring out your personal language, your story, to the best of your ability while being informed by the contemporary creative practices around you. There will be room in each session to develop your personal work and to get one to one feedback from your tutor. All ideas, and visual art forms as inspiration are welcome. Suitable for all levels.

An Evening with Clay
Christine Fagan | Thursdays Have you ever wanted to have a go with one of the most fundamental mediums on the planet? Here’s your chance to create your own vessels and sculptural forms using clay. Learn some simple hand-building techniques which will enable you to construct vessels and sculptures easily. Learn basic glazing techniques with readymade glazes. This fun-filled class is suitable for beginners and students with some knowledge of clay.
Soft Stone Sculpture with Oamaru Stone Perry Scott | Thursdays
This evening class gives you the opportunity to experience working creatively with Oamaru stone to create sculpture. Oamaru stone is a relatively soft stone which is very easy and enjoyable to work with. There is always an interesting mix of students working to individual briefs at different levels, so come along, have some fun creating and learning something new. Suitable for all levels.

REGISTRATION PROCESS Every class is open to enrolled and casual students. We cannot guarantee you a place, so early bookings are essential.

Casual students will receive confirmation of their class placement by email or post, once classes are finalised. All classes must be paid for prior to the start of the class.
Please note: All classes need a minimum number to go ahead. If a class is cancelled, we will let you know 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date. You may then either transfer to another equivalent class (subject to availability), or receive a full refund of paid class fees.
CANCELLATION POLICY Casual students
If you are not able to attend a class please let us know at least 5 days before the class is due to run so that your class fees can be reimbursed. If we don’t hear from you within this time frame your refund will be reduced to 50%. We won’t be able to give refunds for cancellations received after the class has started. If there are good reasons why you have not been able to attend a class which you have paid for, we will consider your request for a refund or transfer to another class if that is possible.
Kids Term Classes
If you have registered your child for a class and wish to cancel the registration, we require notice of your cancellation five days before the start of the class. Failure to do this will mean 50% of the full fee for class registration will still be charged.
Kids Holiday Art Programme
Parents must give 24 hours notice if their child will not be attending booked sessions. Failure to do this will mean the full fee for day/s booked will still be charged. Booking and payment are required in advance of attendance. If you are receiving funding by an agency, please note that we do not require payment in advance unless you are aware of what your proportion of the payment will be. 13
