Kia ora Welcome to The Learning Connexion. We’re pleased to bring you another term of inspiring and hands-on classes in the visual arts, here at our colourful campus. Whether you’re a currently enrolled student, or coming along as a casual student just wanting to join some classes, we’re sure you’ll find something to tempt you to explore your creativity. This booklet gives you a brief insight into the content of the weekend, evening and kids classes that we run. You’ll find more in-depth information on our website, www.tlc.ac.nz, under ‘Study with Us’.
Creative Art Classes for Kids We run creative art classes for kids after school, during term time, and in the school holidays.
Kids’ Term Classes Monday Class 3rd May – 5th July no class on Queens Birthday Monday (7 June) 3.30pm - 5.30pm, ages from 6 to 10 years $135 per term, including materials (9 weeks) Thursday Class 6th May - 8th July 3.30pm - 5.30pm, ages from 9 to 14 years $150 per term including materials (10 weeks) For more information, go to www.tlc.ac.nz
Kids’ Art Holiday Programme 5-12 year olds Dates Week 1: 19th - 23rd Apr Week 2: 27th - 30th Apr - please note there is no class on Monday 26th April Anzac Day observed Times (attend one or both sessions) 9.30am – 12.30pm 1.30pm – 4.30pm Cost Half day: $30 Full day: $55 (1 hour lunch break fully supervised) Early drop off from 8:30am: $5 Late pick up until 5:00pm: $5

Weekly Evening Classes | 7 Weeks 3rd May – 18th June 6.00pm – 9.00pm Held one evening a week. These evening classes run for seven weeks per term. Cost to casual students: $315 per term, plus materials. Please note: Enrolled students can attend any of these classes at no extra cost except materials if space is available.

KIDS’ TERM CLASSES These classes offer kids a range of interesting, challenging and cool projects to complete. Each week kids will learn new skills, gain confidence and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor. MONDAY CLASS 3rd May – 5th July - no class on Queens Birthday Monday (7 June)

MONDAY CLASSES In this class kids will create a variety of different art projects. Each week, there will be a different activity ranging from painting,drawing, printing making, animation, sculpture, craft and more. Kids will learn new skills, gain confidence, play games and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor.
Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice. This is a great class for younger artists and is focused on experimentation, play and self expression. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.

This is a great class for kids who are more 3D focused and like to work with their hands. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.

KIDS’ ART HOLIDAY PROGRAMME 5-12 year olds Whether you are working or just need a break, The Learning Connexion’s Kids’ Holiday Programme is timed just right to keep your kids happy, engaged and having creative holiday fun! Our holiday programme is taught by two experienced and wonderfully creative tutors. Held at our vibrant Taita campus, we provide children with an unforgettable authentic art school experience. This is a hugely popular programme, so book today to secure your child’s place. Our programme is now OSCAR approved, meaning that there are WINZ subsidies available if you need help meeting costs. Hatch A Creature In this class we will be making miniature creatures that hatch out of real clay eggs! Design some baby animals, creepy aliens or whatever creature you desire using polymer clay and paint.
Autumn Nature Houses Using natural materials, you’ll create a beautiful nature house for the fairies or goblins in your garden. Glow in the dark paint will be used to make the houses glow at night!
Tuesday
Air dry Clay Unicorns and Dragons In this class we will be learning how to draw, sculpt and build dragons and unicorns out of air dry clay. Create your own mythical creature!
Paint with Chocolate! Create some yummy art which you can eat with your friends! Learn how to paint with chocolate and create some expressive chocolate art inspired by the artist Jackson Pollock.
Wednesday
Matchbox Miniature Worlds Create a tiny secret world inside a match box using coloured card, polymer clay and 3D materials.
Acrylic Pouring and Paint Spinning Learn how to make colourful pour and spin paintings using acrylic paint and glitter. Learn how to pour onto stones and small canvases.
Thursday
Cartoons and Comics Improve your cartoon and comic drawing skills. In this class we will be looking at how to draw a variety of characters, facial expressions and comic symbols. Design and create your own comic books to take home.
Stop Motion Animation In this class we will be learning about illusion of motion and how to bring drawings and 2D images to life! Learn how to make a zoetrope, thermatrope and stop-motion animation movie!
Friday
Sunset Watercolour Art Learn how to create colourful paintings using watercolour techniques. We will be exploring a variety of techniques and sunset inspired paintings
Insect Art learn about some of our native New Zealand creepy crawlies while we create some bug jar drawings, swash painting and go on an insect scavenger hunt in the woods!

Realistic Drawing In this class we will be learning how to observe and draw the natural environment. Learn how to shade and draw flowers and nature in a realistic style.
Expressive Painting Experiment with a range of different expressive painting techniques including squash, blow, string and roller painting. Develop skills in colour mixing and brush techniques as well having a fun time with paint!
Wednesday
Pinhole Cameras Cyanotype Sun prints In this class we will be looking at masking and silhouettes using cyanotype and spray bottle printmaking techniques. Collect interesting natural materials to create your own silhouette spray bottle and sun prints!
Papier Mache Masks Learn how to sculpt and papier-mâché your own professional theatre mask. Transform yourself into a character, animal or mythical creature of your choice.
Thursday
Light Installation Art In this class, we will be playing with light in different ways. Learn how to create your own miniature light box and shadow puppets to take home.
Clay Tile Art Learn how to make 3D ceramic tiles to wear as jewelry or decorate your walls and floors. Learn a variety of clay sculpting and stamping techniques. Creations can be fired in our kiln for a $5 firing fee.
Friday
Nature Photography Take a bush walk around the TLC campus and snap some photographs using our tablets. Learn about where ideas for photography come from and how to edit and compose different images. Feel free to bring in your own device!
Slime! Learn some slime science and get your hands messy! In this class you will learn how to create colourful glitter borax slime to take home and gross out your friends!
Please note: All classes need a minimum number to go ahead. If a class is cancelled we will let you know 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date. Jewellery - Open Studio Natalie Halley | Tuesdays Our open studio evening class provides a relaxed environment in which you can learn or expand your jewellery making skills. As a beginner, you will learn basic techniques and the safe handling of tools. As an intermediate or advanced student, you may wish to improve your skills in a particular field of jewellery making (for example, stone setting), have a go at trying a method new to you, or continue working on your project from a daytime class. This class will suit students at all levels of jewellery making.
Contemporary Painting and Drawing Kiran Gandhi | Wednesdays What is drawing and painting in today’s age of expansive visual media? They are vital and powerful hands-on media which can help you to manage your creative thoughts and help you to become a more effective communicator. These classes will help you to bring out your personal language, your story, to the best of your ability while being informed by the contemporary creative practices around you. There will be room in each session to develop your personal work and to get one to one feedback from your tutor. All ideas, and visual art forms as inspiration are welcome. Suitable for all levels.

An Evening with Clay Christine Fagan | Thursdays Have you ever wanted to have a go with one of the most fundamental mediums on the planet? Here’s your chance to create your own vessels and sculptural forms using clay. Learn some simple hand-building techniques which will enable you to construct vessels and sculptures easily. Learn basic glazing techniques with ready-made glazes. This fun-filled class is suitable for beginners and students with some knowledge of clay.

REGISTRATION PROCESS Every class is open to enrolled and casual students. We cannot guarantee you a place, so early bookings are essential.
REGISTRATION FORMS To register online, visit our website - tlc.ac.nz. From the menu select ‘Study with us’ and the class type you would like to register for. Choose the class you would like to attend and click the button at the bottom of the page to fill out the registration form.
WAYS TO REGISTER • Online at tlc.ac.nz • Email ps@tlc.ac.nz • Call 0800 278 769 and ask for Programme Support Casual students will receive confirmation of their class placement by email or post, once classes are finalised. All classes must be paid for prior to the start of the class.
Please note: All classes need a minimum number to go ahead. If a class is cancelled, we will let you know 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date. You may then either transfer to another equivalent class (subject to availability), or receive a full refund of paid class fees.
CANCELLATION POLICY Casual students If you are not able to attend a class please let us know at least 5 days before the class is due to run so that your class fees can be reimbursed. If we don’t hear from you within this time frame your refund will be reduced to 50%. We won’t be able to give refunds for cancellations received after the class has started. If there are good reasons why you have not been able to attend a class which you have paid for, we will consider your request for a refund or transfer to another class if that is possible.
Kids’ Term Classes If you have registered your child for a class and wish to cancel the registration, we require notice of your cancellation five days before the start of the class. Failure to do this will mean 50% of the full fee for class registration will still be charged.
Kids’ Art Holiday Programme Parents must give 24 hours notice if their child will not be attending booked sessions. Failure to do this will mean the full fee for day/s booked will still be charged. Booking and payment are required in advance of attendance. If you are receiving funding by an agency, please note that we do not require payment in advance unless you are aware of what your proportion of the payment will be.
