Welcome to The Learning Connexion. We’re pleased to bring you another term of inspiring and hands-on classes in the visual arts, here at our colourful campus. Whether you’re a currently enrolled student, or coming along as a casual student just wanting to join some classes, we’re sure you’ll find something to tempt you to explore your creativity. This booklet gives you a brief insight into the content of the weekend, evening and kids classes that we run. You’ll find more in-depth information on our website, www.tlc.ac.nz, under ‘Study with Us’.

Creative Art Classes for Kids (Term Classes)

These classes offer kids a range of interesting, challenging and cool projects to complete. Each week kids will learn new skills, gain confidence and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor. $10 discount for return students.

MONDAY CLASS

4th May – 29th June 3.30pm - 5.30pm. 6-10 years. $80 + $30 materials-per term (8 weeks). Please note that there will be no classes on 27th April and 1st June.

WEDNESDAY CLASS

29th April – 1st July 3.30pm - 5.30pm. 7-12 years. $100 + $45 materials (including clay & firing) - per term (10 weeks).

THURSDAY CLASS

30th April – 2nd July 3.30pm - 5.30pm. 9-14 years. $100 + $30 materials - per term (10 weeks).

MONDAY CLASSES - In this class kids will create a variety of different art projects. Each week, there will be a different activity ranging from painting,drawing, printing making, animation, sculpture, craft and more. Kids will learn new skills, gain confidence, play games and have loads of fun with our talented and dedicated tutor. Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice. This is a great class for younger artists and is focused on experimentation, play and self expression. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES - Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get your hands messy! In this class kids will use stories, music and imagination as their inspiration while they work on a variety of different ceramic projects including pottery and fanciful sculptures.

Techniques may include, but are not limited to: Learning about different types of clay from polymers, salt dough, paper clay and ceramics. Learning basic clay methods including how to make pinch, slab and coil pots, ceramics, rolling cylinders, altering shapes and applying surface textures, stamps and colors. Learning 3D modeling including sculptinging and paint miniatures, 3D models, dioramas and unique sculptures.

THURSDAY CLASSES - Our classes aim to build self-confidence, develop skills in creative thinking, experimentation, spontaneity and help students find their own creative voice. This is a great class for kids who are more 3D focused and like to work with their hands. At the end of the term students will be able to submit art for a group art exhibition.

2nd May - 14th June | 10am – 4.30pm | Lunch break of 30 minutes. Casual students: $75/day plus materials

Sculpting a Wall Figure

Christine Fagan | 2nd & 3rd May | 10am - 4.30pm

Here is your chance to sculpt a wall feature fit to be fired. You can choose from a bas relief tile, wall feature or wall planters. You will learn how to set up your basic armature, sculpt your chosen form and prepare your work for hanging and firing. This is an exciting class where you will learn how to prepare for kiln safe firing, using best practice finishing techniques and mounting. Suitable for beginners and students with some previous knowledge of clay.

Space, Action, Paint

Gary Freemantle | 2nd & 3rd May | 10am - 4.30pm

In this class we have the luxury of space within which to free up your painting approach by using your whole body with emphasis on expressive and intuitive use of form. Make broad gestures that dance and sing to create paintings that are lively and exciting to both create and look at. By remaining open to chance and serendipity we will live and paint in the moment. Try something new, experiment and discover unexpected creative possibilities. This class always produces great results and much productivity. No previous experience necessary. A good introductory class for casual students.

Basic Picture Framing

Leah Wynne | 23rd & 24th May | 10am - 4.30pm

Learn the skills and techniques of picture framing using professional equipment with tips and advice on how to do this at home with basic tools. Bring along your artwork or sentimental pieces that you have held off framing, and create your own framing masterpiece. Suitable for all levels.

Expressing the Human Form through Drawing and Painting

Dan Wilkinson | 6th June | 10am - 4.30pm

Express the amazing human form through an array of approaches and different media. We will look at some slides to see how others have captured the human form before embarking on five sustained hours of life drawing. Bring an open mind and different materials to work with during this exciting workshop. Expect to create a mini body of work which will hopefully inspire other artistic creations. Suitable for all levels.

Make a Knife

Dennis Berdinner | 6th, 7th & 13th June | 10am - 4.30pm

Ever wanted to make your own knife? In this 3 day class over two weekends, learn how to develop a design then forge and grind a piece of spring steel into a wonderful kitchen knife perfect for slicing, dicing and chopping . Note - finishing details of the knife may be required after completion of the class. Follow-up instruction will be provided, if required, during class. Suitable for all levels. Minimum age is 13, though if under 16 will need to be accompanied by a supervising caregiver or parent.

Photographing Your Artworks

Leigh Mitchell-Anyon | 13th & 14th June | 10am - 4.30pm

If you want to sustain and develop your creative practice you’ll need great photographs of your art works to share with the world. A great image will enhance your image or ‘brand’. Conversely poor images will fail to attract attention and at worst still possibly erode your image or ‘brand’. Once you can take great photos the next step is to take control of all your visual material such as online presence/ social media, website or online portfolio, business cards/posters/flyers. Come along and learn some new tricks to get your work noticed. Suitable for all levels.

Evening Classes

4th May – 19th June | 6pm – 9pm (7 weeks) Casual students: $265 per term plus materials

Jewellery - Open Studio

Natalie Halley | Tuesdays | 6pm - 9pm (7 weeks)

This class is for you if you are a complete beginner and want to learn basic jewellery making skills in a relaxed environment. Or, come along if you have some experience and wish to improve your skills in a particular field of jewellery-making (such as stone setting) or you’d like to continue working on a project from a daytime class. This class will suit students at all levels of jewellery making.

An Evening with Clay

Christine Fagan | Tuesdays | 6pm - 9pm (7 weeks)

Have you ever wanted to have a go with one of the most fundamental mediums on the planet? Here’s your chance to create your own vessels and sculptural forms using clay. Learn some simple hand building techniques which will enable you to construct vessels and sculptures easily. This fun filled class is suitable for beginners and students with some knowledge of clay. Due to popular demand, this class will run on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings for term 1. Separate registration is required for each class.

Contemporary Painting and Drawing

Kiran Gandhi | Wednesdays | 6pm - 9pm (7 weeks)

What is drawing and painting in today’s age of expansive visual media? It is a vital and powerful medium that helps you manage your creative thoughts and helps you to become an effective communicator. These classes will help you to bring out your personal language, your story, to the best of your ability while being informed by the contemporary creative practices around you. These classes are suitable for beginners and those wanting to take their drawing and painting skills to the next level. Each class will begin with group skills exercises, painting and drawing demonstrations with a presentation of visual references. There will be room in each session to develop your personal work Suitable for all levels.

An Evening with Clay

Christine Fagan | Thursdays | 6pm - 9pm (7 weeks).

Soft Stone Sculpture with Oamaru Stone

Perry Scott | Thursdays | 6pm - 9pm (7 weeks)

This evening class gives you the opportunity to experience working creatively with Oamaru stone to create sculpture. Oamaru stone is a relatively soft stone which is very easy and enjoyable to work with. There is always an interesting mix of students working on individual briefs at different levels, so come along, have some fun creating and learning something new. Suitable for all levels.

Registration Process

Every class is open to enrolled and casual students. We cannot guarantee you a place, so early bookings are essential.

To register online, visit our website - tlc.ac.nz. From the menu select ‘Study with us’ and the class type you would like to register for. Choose the class you would like to attend and click the button at the bottom of the page to fill out the registration form.

Casual students will receive confirmation of their class placement by email or post, once classes are finalised. All classes must be paid for prior to the start of the class.

Please note: All classes need a minimum number to go ahead. If a class is cancelled, we will let you know 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date. You may then either transfer to another equivalent class (subject to availability), or receive a full refund of paid class fees.

Cancellation Policy

Casual Students - If you are not able to attend a class please let us know at least 5 days before the class is due to run so that your class fees can be reimbursed. If we don’t hear from you within this time frame your refund will be reduced to 50%. We won’t be able to give refunds for cancellations received after the class has started. If there are good reasons why you have not been able to attend a class which you have paid for, we will consider your request for a refund or transfer to another class if that is possible.

Kids Term Classes - if you have registered your child for a class and wish to cancel the registration, we require notice of your cancellation five days before the start of the class. Failure to do this will mean 50% of the full fee for class registration will still be charged.

Kids Holiday Art Programme - Parents must give 24 hours notice if their child will not be attending booked sessions. Failure to do this will mean the full fee for day/s booked will still be charged. Booking and payment are required in advance of attendance. If you are receiving funding by an agency, please note that we do not require payment in advance unless you are aware of what your proportion of the payment will be.
