Reinvent your future! All times are strange. Covid-19 has drawn attention to problems that have been present for a long time. Plagues are not new, although we’ve become better at spreading them. It’s fair to say that life is dangerous. Creativity is The Learning Connexion’s (TLC) focus and it involves coming to terms with danger. We encourage you to build skills that enable you to reinvent your future. This requires us to think for ourselves. TLC is at odds with the practice of meekly doing as we’re told. Much of education belongs to that tradition and the rewards come for getting the right answers and behaving nicely. Creativity might feel threatening because it questions tradition. Comfort, otherwise known as complacency, is a far bigger threat. It anchors us helplessly in the past. TLC is both conservative and creative. Our core values are conservative. TLC’s school agreement says: Look after yourself; look after others and look after the environment. We have to stay alert in a way that may be challenging. Does it mean that we have to change the world by ourselves? No and yes. It takes skill to decide what we can change and what is a waste of energy. To some extent each positive individual action changes the world. Individually the changes are small, although collectively they may be large. We are optimistic that we can work together for creativity that is in harmony with our world. Curiosity and conversations are a way of life and they never stop. OUR PHILOSOPHY At The Learning Connexion, we teach sustainable creativity through making. Our style of teaching is to draw out, rather than stuff in. By drawing from your life experiences, we enable you to develop your individual creativity and see how this relates to the wider community. We focus on learning by doing, so our programmes are hands-on and practical. Our mission is to achieve sustainable creativity for every student.

OUR PURPOSE For over 30 years The Learning Connexion has been a leader in the field of creative education. Our current creativity programmes offer the flexibility for students to tailor our programmes to meet their individual interests and needs. Through handson making students connect with what inspires them while learning a diverse range of technical and creativity skills.
Our NZQA approved creativity programmes support the development of transferable skills such as, innovation, risk-taking, leadership, engagement with community and businesses, with the aim of developing a sustainable creative practice. Each person’s own history and interests form the basis for their creative journey with The Learning Connexion.
I studied at The Learning Connexion a few years ago and felt that it was a pivotal point in my life. Thank you TLC! You have moulded my creative skill set massively! EXPERIENCED TUTORS AND MENTORS Our teaching staff are all practising artists, specialising in a wide range of disciplines. They bring real world expertise to their roles. Passionate about art and creativity, they are enthusiastic about sharing skills and facilitating each student's individual creative journey. Tutors facilitate classes at our campus and assist students in developing their creative processes and technical skills. The group dynamic within the classes is a powerful tool, where both students and tutors contribute equally to creative growth. Mentors work closely with students to support their individual needs. All students are assigned a mentor who works with them throughout their programme, guiding the development of their creative practice and providing feedback.
STUDENT SUPPORT We offer a dedicated onsite learning support staff member to support students’ learning needs, including help with study skills and learning strategies. We also have experienced programme support staff who are responsive to the daily challenges faced by our diverse group of students.
I love TLC’s down to earth unconventional nature. The fact that students are valued and celebrated as individuals who are encouraged to dig deep and follow their own paths rather than to regurgitate some fad; to be lions rather than sheep! For me, art and creativity is a way of seeing the world and realising there are so many things in the universe that we don’t know about. It helps me feel free. I don’t see my creativity as a separate facet of my life. I live and breathe art every single day. I need to create things in order to stay sane in this strange human society. Not being an artist isn’t an option. Enrolling at The Learning Connexion was the best decision I made. I found the prospectus in my high school art room and I knew TLC was for me. High School was a trap and attending TLC gave me the key to open the cage. The things I enjoyed most about studying at TLC were the positive, creative and relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to meet other openminded creatures. Currently I have several long-term projects on the go. I’m writing and illustrating a graphic novel. I have been painting a series of portraits of characters in space. In ceramics, I have

been making vessels with human and alien faces, for holding candles and succulents. I have also been working on a photography series focusing on the fluidity of gender expression. Through my art practice I have continued my journey to understand myself and my gender identity. My advice for people starting at TLC, is to relax, let in the inspiration and a stream of creativity will flow from within – go with it. Take as many opportunities as possible. Utilise the instruments of creation.

WAYS TO STUDY
T
he Learning Connexion’s goal is to provide a pathway of learning which best suits the individual needs of each student within an inclusive learning environment. We offer options for studying onsite or from home. Learning occurs through practical application of creative processes supported by a combination of tutor/mentor directed and independent study. All of our programmes can be completed full-time or part-time. Casual students can attend any of our classes. These flexible study options give our students the opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills while meeting existing personal commitments such as work and family. 19 | Ways to Study
ONSITE Located in Taita, Lower Hutt, The Learning Connexion campus is set within four hectares of New Zealand native bush. We have expansive views that look out over the Hutt Valley. Our campus is an action-packed art space, where students and tutors come to explore their creative ideas in a supportive environment. Studying onsite provides a vibrant, supportive community that enhances creativity with students having access to a wide range of specialist studios. See pages 27-30 for more information.
Students can also register to attend weekend and evening classes in addition to their main weekday and block classes, although this is subject to availability of space. Regular contact with staff and other students provides valuable feedback about ideas and processes.

DISTANCE DELIVERY The Learning Connexion offers a flexible and supportive study from home option for students anywhere in New Zealand. Distance delivery means you can learn to draw, paint, sculpt, design and create from the comfort of your own home receiving one to one support and guidance from our skilled mentors, all of whom are practising artists. Studying from home gives you the flexibility to maintain your current lifestyle without the pressure of travel and the conformity of traditional class structures. Communication with your mentor can be through Skype, Zoom, phone, email, social media or written feedback. We also offer you the opportunity to connect with other students, so potentially by the end of your programme, you will have a community of other creatives to continue working with. You can create a sustainable creative life from anywhere around the world! Students are each assigned a personal mentor who will help them develop their individual creative practice and guide them through their chosen programme providing feedback and suggestions along the way. Each student will also have access to TLC’s comprehensive video resources and programme materials online. In addition to this, distance delivery students can attend onsite classes at The Learning Connexion campus subject to availability.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS We welcome students from all over the world! If you are overseas and want to come and study in New Zealand you are very welcome to do so. In order to meet your student visa requirements you need to be enrolled as a full-time onsite student, and move to Wellington – ‘The coolest little capital in the world’ - for the duration of your programme. International students also have the option of studying part-time from their home country, or anywhere in the world, through distance delivery. As an artist, I like the medium of painting best. I’ve always enjoyed the physicality of holding a paintbrush and manipulating paint, in the tradition of abstract expressionism and impressionism. I’m inspired both by internal feelings and cues that I like to express through colour and gestural application of paint, as well as by the beauty and spirituality of nature. I like to show this in an emotionally charged and vibrant way rather than a literal depiction. I enrolled with The Learning Connexion because I had always wanted to go to art school but had completed other tertiary education instead. When my son left home I decided it was time to pursue this long-held goal. I liked the fact that I could study by distance part-time as it gave me the flexibility to balance other areas of my life with my study. It was a fantastic decision for me because it has really focussed my efforts and taken my practice and promotion of my art to a new level. I have produced a lot more work – enough for several solo exhibitions.

CASUAL CLASSES
CORRECTIONS STUDENTS
Not everyone has the time to commit to a long term programme. Casual classes are a great way to have a taste of what we have to offer. Each term we have a range of weekend, evening and five-day classes to suit most busy schedules, where you can explore painting, illustration, jewellery, ceramics, printmaking, photography, sculpting or even make a knife.
The Learning Connexion welcomes study enquiries from within Corrections facilities around New Zealand. Achieving a nationally recognised NZQA qualification in creativity gives Corrections students valuable skills for the future including making techniques, creativity, problem-solving, commitment, focus and confidence.

TLC EDUCATIONAL TRUST
CREATIVITY CHANGES THE FACE OF EDUCATION During the Covid-19 pandemic New Zealand experienced a surge of inventiveness, humour and kindness, the same factors that drive The Learning Connexion’s approach to creativity. The TLC Educational Trust was established in 2000 with the purpose of supporting education in the field of art and creativity. The Trust has two major roles. One is to be a leader in applied research (relating to creativity) and the other is to support students who are unable to meet the cost of fees and materials. This enables a wider range of students to have access to tertiary study.
TLC’s feedback indicates a 54% improvement in the well-being of graduates between commencement and completion of their programme. This merits deeper research that could have implications for the whole of education. Donations and direct involvement will help us all to make a difference. As an artist I'm very focused on my projects. My aim has been to make very complicated pieces to see how far I can push my skills. I love nature and trees, the interlocking roots and the colours, so a lot of my jewellery has some of those elements in them. I’ve cast twigs into silver for rings, carved roots into wax in my designs, sawn out leaves to solder onto pendants. I love the friendly environment at The Learning Connexion, the fact you are free to create in almost every medium from drawing to digital or glass. If you ask for help someone will take the time to talk you through what you're trying to do. The tutors are so knowledgeable and really want you to succeed, making studying here a really great experience. I’ve been trying to make something that looks very professional for a while and I recently made a bracelet. I really wasn’t sure how it would look, but when I finally finished, it was exactly how I wanted it – dainty and clean. It really showed me how far I’ve come and how much TLC has taught me.

he Learning Connexion offers tertiary level, NZQA approved national qualifications in creativity. Our programmes are student-centered, hands-on, and emphasise the connections between the processes of art and the wider field of creativity. The overall goal is to achieve sustainable creativity for every student. Throughout all of our programmes, students work closely with tutors and mentors to develop study briefs which connect with the ideas, processes and materials they choose to explore. Tutors and mentors provide assistance to meet technical needs and to develop an appropriate set of skills for each student, as well as give personalised feedback to help support each student’s creative exploration. All of our programmes can be studied from home via distance learning, or onsite at our Taita campus. All students participate in both tutor directed and supervised independent study and research. The programme is a structured introduction to a wide range of art and creativity ideas and applications. You’ll gain foundation skills in creativity, including the ability to explore ideas in a range of styles and media. In essence, Level 4 is about exploring your creative practice.

Commitment and the ability to maintain active engagement throughout the programme are key requirements for this qualification. Students entering into the Certificate programme do not need to have previous art experience or prior qualifications. Students applying for enrolment in this programme must demonstrate an ability to successfully complete this programme of study.
Graduates will be able to apply creative thinking and processes, with guidance, across a range of disciplines.

I’m a mixed media artist and my main focus is collage featuring washi (Japanese paper) and paper stitching. I often work spontaneously and intuitively. Although I prioritise intricacy and attention to detail, I also value negative space and a minimalist approach. I think those aspects are an expression of my Japanese heritage and personify the essence of my work.
One of my arty friends was studying at The Learning Connexion and she recommended it to me. It was a good decision and helped me get started along my creative path. My focus was elsewhere when I started at TLC, but I found collage to be my best while studying. I’ve also learnt a good habit of ‘practising creativity’ as a Distance Delivery student.
I also work on printmaking. I’ve been participating in several printmaking exhibitions and print exchanges outside New Zealand. Printing methods I use are lino-cut and drypoint with chin-collé. I often use prints as parts of my collages.
One of my wow moments was having my first solo exhibition at Taupo Museum in early 2018, just after I finished my Diploma (Level 6). I would like to be represented by a gallery and exhibit my work regularly. I would also like to be a finalist at a major art awards.

Connecting with Community The Learning Connexion has a strong focus on connecting our students with creative opportunities, art projects and collaborations with our local communities. We have well established relationships with galleries, art groups, the council and a variety of community groups. Whether it is about possibilities to exhibit, being part of a creative project, funding applications, art competitions or our own regular student exhibitions - there’s a multitude of ways to get involved. As part of the school’s community approach we visit schools, offer creative workshops in community hubs, participate in local festivals and career expos and support other local initiatives. We have a well established online community and a culture that encourages problem solving and creative growth.
STUDENT EXHIBITIONS Each term we hold a student-led exhibition on campus and/or online, showcasing our student work to the wider community, and providing students the opportunity to market and sell their work. As well as being wonderful events, these exhibitions help our students build confidence and understand how their work is connecting with a wider audience. They learn a range of relevant skills, such as preparing work for exhibitions, selecting the right work for exhibiting, advertising an event - as well as marketing their own artwork and creativity practice.

MOANATŪITEREPO The Learning Connexion has been committed to working with our neighbour Taita College on the Te Repo regeneration initiative facilitated by teacher Simon Hirini from Taita College. Our communities are situated upon a geographical marvel that was once farmed and occupied by the former Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The collaborative action of cleansing the swamp has opened up many learning opportunities, from understanding the natural network of the environment, how to care for and sustain fauna and repurposing found materials to create artworks.
TE RĀ O TE RAUKURA For a number of years The Learning Connexion has participated in the Te Rā O Te Raukura Festival in Waiwhetu, Lower Hutt. This cultural festival is a mix of live music and education, as well as food and craft stalls. It is a great opportunity for TLC to connect with
a wide range of community groups and use art as a tool for wellbeing and connection. TLC is passionate about encouraging our students to fully engage with our neighbours, establish networks, develop leadership skills to foster a culture of creativity.
CLUBHOUSES The Learning Connexion is committed to working with youth and offering alternative pathways to their creative career. We partner with local organizations like Taita Clubhouse, which provides young people with leadership opportunities, and the opportunity to be involved with creative projects based around different technological platforms. Our shared Kaupapa with Taita Clubhouse means we can provide meaningful creative activity for young people, while also giving our students first hand experience delivering workshops in a variety of energetic spaces.

HUAKINA In Te Reo Māori 'Huakina' means 'to open'. For prisoners in Aotearoa New Zealand, art is often a means of opening up new forms of expression and pathways back to normal life. Huakina, an innovative exhibition curated by The Learning Connexion School of Creativity and Art, in conjunction with Expressions Whirinaki, explored the potential of the Huakina theme. Featuring art by prisoner and guest artists, Huakina - to open - was a rare opportunity to view work made by prisoner artists from around New Zealand alongside well-known guest artists including John Walsh, Nigel Brown, Shane Hansen, Dale Copeland, Sean Duffell, Flox and more. “The process of creating or viewing art can be a healing process, or it can create bridges of understanding between wide gaps that may exist between cultures, individuals, or throughout vast histories of time,” says contemporary Māori artist Darcy Nicholas.

I’ve been working with wood and bone since 1984 which has helped me develop my passion for Māori art. I like developing my own designs using traditional art and design and making them into contemporary designs. I enjoy studying at TLC as this is a new journey for me. My enjoyment is being with people, sharing ideas, being able to have access to the tools you need for projects in process. TLC makes me feel I’m part of their family as the tutors, mentors and administration staff are so warm. Being with TLC has given me stability and a structured living – a sense of purpose and knowing where I'm going to be in five to ten years time. For me it was about making me an empire and living off the skills I know and the art I produce. Alongside Māori art my other passion is aimed at youth at risk, helping those aged 12-18 as I feel these are the times when Māori and Pasifika children are most at risk. My aim is to work with youth, teaching them life skills, implementing my carving and art skills.

Since August last year, getting out of prison and registering with TLC was the best decision which has brought me to where I am today. TLC has given me momentum, energy, good wairua, confidence and made me a people person. I’ve learnt how to read and write, paint with water acrylic on canvas, use oil pastels and get into the habit of drawing and designing. It has been so exciting progressing to develop more creative mahi. One subject I love is jewellery as collaborating silver, gold, copper and bronze with greenstone is amazing. I've started off with some rings and pendants. My life has been surrounded by gangs, drugs, alcohol and abuse, and all of this led me to a life of institutions; ‘boys homes’, corrective training schools, prisons which have been more downs than ups. I found TLC through prison. I think my decision to enrol has been so helpful in organising my everyday life and this has allowed me to grow and develop my skills and knowledge not just in art but my love for art. My passions, my creativeness, my drive, my fire, my wairua, balancing my health and fitness - as well as my spiritual wellbeing. All have seen a big increase.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING The Learning Connexion’s New Zealand Certificate in Creativity (Level 4) programme is ‘open entry’ and no previous experience is needed to enrol in this programme. Commitment and the ability to maintain active engagement throughout the programme are key requirements of this qualification. Students wanting to enrol into the New Zealand Diploma in Creativity programmes at levels 5 and 6 are required to either complete the Certificate Programme at level 4, or submit a portfolio for assessment as part of the recognition of prior learning (RPL) process. Students applying for enrolment in any programme must demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme of study they are applying to enrol in. In addition to submitting a portfolio, applicants for the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) – Level 7 are required to participate in an interview, the results of which become part of the application process. THE FINE PRINT Persons under 18 years of age are legally classified as minors. When minors apply for enrolment, the enrolment contract must be co-signed by a parent or guardian. In addition, proof of guardianship is required. Persons under 16 years of age must meet Ministry of Education criteria. Contact us for more information on how to enrol a minor.

Student Fee Protection and Student Fee Indemnification In accordance with section 236A of the Education Act 1989 and subsequent amendments, The Learning Connexion has an approved Trust Account for Student Fee Protection and Student Fee Indemnification. PAYMENT OPTIONS Students can pay tuition fees via StudyLink, cash, online banking or credit card. Full payments must be arranged or made no later than the first day of the students’ programme. Alternative payment may happen through a flexible scheduled payment plan if discussed with Accounts first. There is no interest charged however a $50 administration fee applies. Student Loans and Allowances Both part-time and full-time students at The Learning Connexion may be eligible for a student loan. Frequently Asked Questions
What’s different about The Learning Connexion programmes? Our programmes are student centered and flexible, allowing students to develop creativity skills in a way that has real meaning to them. We provide a safe and positive environment in which your creativity can prosper. If you work hard and commit yourself fully to your programme, you will succeed. Do I have to be academically minded? Our qualifications are all ‘hands-on’ programmes. There are no written exams. Research and critical analysis are part of the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) programme. The programmes can be explored in a variety of ways to suit your individual learning style. Can I do any of TLC’s programmes without previous art experience? Yes. Our Certificate programme is aimed at helping students achieve a viable level of artistic skill. It is also an opportunity to try out a range of artistic disciplines. The more you use your skills, the better they will become! See pages 37-38 for more information. What sort of career can I expect after completing my programme? The creativity skills you develop at The Learning Connexion can be transferred to many fields. We encourage students to explore options that link with their core motivation. The courses are here

Potential careers include: entrepreneur, advertising, project management and administration, professional artist, costume designer, craftsperson, teacher, film or television producer, florist, graphic designer, hairdresser, illustrator, scenic painter, interior and landscape designer, muralist, jeweller, mason, blacksmith, photographer, screen printer, sign writer, tattoo artist, work in theatre/film production and design. Do you recognise previous training or experience in art? Yes. If you have previous experience or qualifications, you can apply to ‘skip’ our level 4 Certificate in Creativity and apply for direct entry to either the level 5 or 6 Diploma in Creativity, or the Advanced Diploma in Art and Creativity at level 7. You will need to submit a portfolio for assessment. Entry to any programme level will be at the discretion of the Academic Board. See page 62 for more information. Can I put my programme on hold and take a term off? You cannot put your programme on hold once you have enrolled. In some cases we may be able to grant an extension, but only where there are extenuating circumstances. Talk to Programme Support and see what creative solutions they come up with.
Do I need to purchase anything? Yes. This is dependent upon your personal creative needs and goals. We have starter kit materials available to purchase from the TLC Materials Shop. For more information please visit tlc.ac.nz. We also encourage you to improvise at low cost (use recycled materials; rethink what you can do with nature fibres and other media; swap materials and tools with other people). Can I study part-time and work to support myself? Yes, you can study any of our four qualifications part-time or full-time (subject to entry requirements). This gives you the opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills while meeting existing personal commitments. Can I get a student loan and/or student allowance? TLC’s programmes are accredited and approved by NZQA so students are eligible for a Student Loan and/ or a Student Allowance provided that they meet StudyLink criteria. How can I be part of the Learning Connexion Community? TLC encourages all students to make direct contact with other students.
