Happily ever after Article by Jonathan Milne
Imagine living ‘happily ever after’. No need for creativity. No need to do anything because everything is perfect. Yeah, right! The reason ‘happily ever after’ is placed at the end of stories is that there wouldn’t be anything to say if it was at the beginning. In an exciting story things go wrong. Sometimes signalled in the first line. Tolstoy began Anna Karenina, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Ominous? If you’re one of the rare people who collects novels you might pass time checking the opening lines. Titles can be fun too. ‘The prettiest horse in the glue factory’ (Corey White) grabbed my attention. Titles and first lines are often offbalance. Sometimes the entire story is off-balance, which helps to keep us engaged. It’s like flying. In Hitchhiker’s Guild to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams said, “There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and
miss. ... Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that presents the difficulties.” Flying and creativity have something in common. You’re aiming to do something that isn’t possible with available knowledge. What can you do differently? Scientists, who tend to be cautious, say that they are doing research or conducting an experiment – they shy away from the word ‘creativity’. One of the lessons to be learned from science is that the creative side combines uncertainty with sustained methodology. Scientists use techniques that have to be precise and consistent. They also have to look for something that doesn’t presently exist and may be very annoying (especially if they find it). Einstein was a nuisance when he figured that matter and energy were interchangeable. Experiments still indicate that he was on to something, even if it’s weird and required deep revision of books and teaching. The knack of living weaves the predictable and the unknown. Miles Davis said, “It’s not the note
understanding how best to relate to creativity. That’s great. We need to find ways to communicate why creativity is so important – Creativity says YES to both. You’ll meet easy notes and you’ll be tested particularly in times when the myths of eternal growth and prosperity by rough notes. are falling apart. My own university education was There isn’t any formula for the best horrible and I’ve spent much of tactics to deal with unpredictable my life trying to build something events (like life itself). If you get it different. It is thanks to all those boring lectures that we now have a right, maybe you can achieve a school built on experiential learning. variation on ‘happily ever after’. The catch is that it is never perfect. The Recently, the NZ Qualifications plus is that you steadily get better at Authority has had difficulty playing and the jazz never stops. you play that’s the wrong note – it’s the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong.”
