WOMEN IN GOLD HOLISTIC GYNECOLOGY
GOOD LIFE MATTERS Eine wirksame Frauenheilkunde setzt immer auch ein Vertrauensverhältnis voraus.

How do we want to live? Especially now during the corona virus pandemic, but also due to global warming, we are learning how important parks, trees and green spaces are for the quality of life in our cities. How urban greenery is being advanced in Frankfurt with exciting projects – and has been for 150 years by the way – is the subject of our THE FRANKFURTER cover story, for which we also "get on the roof" of international showpieces. GREEN BOULEVARD IN PARIS When Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, announced in January 2021 that work on the "extraordinary garden" on the Champs-Élysées would start this year, an image went around the world that made the boulevard from the Place de la Concorde up to the Arc de Triomphe look like a green promenade. Paris is just one example of the metropolises all around the world that want to counter the effects of climate change with more greenery and so reduce global warming. After all, cities heat up much faster than places in the countryside. This is due to the heat-storing effect of asphalt and concrete. More and more heat islands that do not cool down even at night are being created. The very hot summers of the last few years have already shown us this. Forecasts show that some metropolises could be up to eight degrees Celsius warmer in 2100 than they are today.

View of the "Green City" Frankfurt am Main from the new Goethe Tower.
FRANKFURT – THE CITY AS A “SPOnge" And Frankfurt is likely to be at the forefront here. In 2018, the city received the "warmest city in Germany" award – a "bittersweet title" as the Frankfurt Environmental Agency puts it. However, urban greenery should also help mitigate other climate change consequences such as heavy rain and winds – and increasing noise pollution and particulate matter pollution. In line with the idea of "sponge city", the greenery is supposed to absorb water and release it when needed. And since last year, another decisive aspect has been added: due to the pandemic, residents with limited mobility are increasingly seeking recreation right on their doorstep – in parks, public green spaces and in community gardens. This is why people are now talking about "stressed greenery".

At the online conference on how climate shapes the city held in Frankfurt in September 2020, it was agreed that climate adaptation in cities is a task that can only be solved by society as a whole. Community gardens are a good example of how city dwellers themselves can help to garden public green spaces. The movement came from the USA and Great Britain to the world's metropolises in the noughties. City dwellers made fallow land available for small community and neighbourhood gardens on their own initiative and, at the same time, saw them as a social project, since urban gardening thrives on participation and learning from one another. After the first wave, which produced the Prinzessinnengärten in Berlin and the Frankfurter Garten (now: Neuer Frankfurter Garten) in Frankfurt, these initiatives are now a firm fixture in the urban landscape. There are over 20 of these urban gardening projects in Frankfurt, including Tortuga Eschersheim, Essbares Fechenheim and the Ginnheimer Kirchplatzgärtchen. What unites them all is the desire to bring a piece of land and nature back into the city and to try out and promote sustainability.

The relationship between the big city and nature has c hanged a lot over time. Industrialisation in the 18th and 19th centuries turned cities into today's densely populated hubs, where nature – with its fallow land, kitchen gardens and fields – was largely displaced. However, as the cities became increasingly inhospitable and stuffy – also due to the fumes of the nearby factories – parks and green spaces were created. They were designed according to the ideas of well-known landscape designers such as Peter Joseph Lenné and were strongly oriented towards the romantic image of a well-orchestrated, beauti f ul and harmonious landscape. In Frankfurt, the Grüneburgpark and the Günthersburgpark bear witness to these ideas. Colonisation brought exotic plants from distant lands into the domestic realm, and palms and cacti were grown in greenhouses to the amazement of the city's residents. Frankfurt’s Palmengarten is one of the most prominent examples of this in Germany. In 2021, the garden that Heinrich Siesmayer modelled on English and French lines will celebrate its 150th anniversary. To mark this occas ion and the 30th anniversary of the GrünGürtel, the green belt, the Historisches Museum Frankfurt is staging no fewer than three exhibitions on the theme of "The City and the Green – Frankfurt Parks and Green Spaces t hrough the Ages". Today, we are at the beginning of a new phase: when we look at climate change, dwindling biodiversity, resource depletion and pollution of the oceans, we can see that our relationship with nature is out of balance. The Covid-19 pandemic is adding to this. If we take philosophers like Bruno Latour seriously, we should rapidly bring our lifestyle back into harmony with nature. In the microcosm of the city, development is already being measured in terms of repair and reconnecting with n ature.

Examples like Singapore, Paris or the Vauban housing project in Freiburg show what happens when cities consistently focus on more urban greenery. Singapore is in the process of becoming the greenest city in the world and has created requirements and subsidies for this. Paris has set itself the goal of transforming the city in a sustainable way and is focusing on more greenery, cycle paths and footpaths. And in the south of Freiburg, Vauban was developed more than 20 years ago as a holistic ecological district characterised by dense development, short distances, a mixed community, lots of greenery and innovative architectural solutions. Globally, it is seen as a pioneer for sustainable neighbourhoods. And Frankfurt? Since 2014, our city has borne the epithet of "Green City". We have over 300 parks and green spaces, the afore-mentioned community gardens, a wealth of environmental initiatives and last but not least the beautiful Main River. But there are challenges: on average, Frankfurt is Germany’s hottest city, with a high population density and an influx of almost 15,000 people every year. Ninety-seven per cent of the trees in the city forest have been weakened by the recent very hot summers. Ever more green spaces have to make way for new housing. The city is under pressure to do something. Some new neighbourhoods are being eagerly planned, such as the so-called Josefstadt in the northwest towards the A5, which focuses on the interconnectedness of landscape and city, community, experiencing nature and co-gardening under the sign of the circular economy. However, the existing infrastructure also has to be addressed. That’s why, in 2017, Frankfurt initiated the "Frankfurt freshens up" programme, which subsidises facades, backyard and roof greening and, more recently, rainwater collection systems and public drinking fountains with sums of up to €50,000. The city of Frankfurt is spending two million euros a year on the programme; it will end in 2021 but will continue in a different form.

The "Simply Green" exhibition at the German Architecture Museum (DAM) is exhibiting a selection of these projects and more from all parts of Germany. It is also providing pragmatic information on the advantages of individual green facades and roofs and dispelling prejudices and obstacles such as "too expensive to maintain", "destroys the building material", and "cumbersome approval procedures". Moreover, it is not only showing successful projects, but also systems of facade greening in the museum's atriums, which have now been planted. What’s more, you can even buy planting bags for €19 at the DAM, which – filled with soil and seeds – can be placed on a flat roof or an inner courtyard area. Nature will take care of the rest – without any planning permission at all.

You only have to look at nearby Darmstadt to see how well greening buildings can work in the long term. In the 1970s, against the backdrop of Darmstadt's long tradition of experimental building culture, the architect Ot Hoffmann completed his tree house not far from the Landesmuseum in the city centre; its plants still sway magnificently over the railings today. Hoffmann's tree house was just one example of the design expression of the then new environmental movement, which resulted in terraced houses full of bushes or in artistic interventions such as the planting of 15 "tree tenants" into flats by Friedensreich Hundertwasser for the Milan Triennale in 1973.

Der Mailänder „Bosco Verticale“ von Stefano Boeri Architetti und Laura Gatti gilt als das Wahrzeichen der neuen grünen Architektur. Milan's "Bosco Verticale" by Stefano Boeri Architetti and Laura Gatti is considered the landmark of the new green architecture.
These days, green architecture and urban development are a far less idealistic, philosophical and spiritual matter. They are characterised by aspects such as climate adaptation, participation and wellbeing. In the "Bosco Verticale" in Milan, completed in 2014, the strong desire for a green and sustainable city crystallises in a completely new dimension. Milanese architect Stefano Boeri and landscape designer Laura Gatti surrounded two high-rise towers – 80 metres and 110 metres high – with mature trees and shrubs that had previously had to withstand tests in a wind tunnel. Today, this project is a pioneer and a landmark of a new green style of architecture. Currently, more than 20 new "Boschi Verticali" are being planned around the globe – the tallest in China with a height of 250 metres, and in Eindhoven a tree house with social housing is being built. Because this new architecture also has to defend itself against the claim that it has the reputation of being a luxury hobby – going by the prices per square metre of the flats in the Milan tower. In Frankfurt, at the entrance to the Europaviertel, the high-rise "Eden" tower is currently being built with a not-so-elaborate green façade and a height of 98 metres.

A green roof, as the "Simply Green" exhibition at the DAM calculates, gets much less hot. For the "City Hall" example in Chicago, it reduces the heat from 70 to 24 degrees Celsius. This not only benefits the direct microclimate in the neighbourhood, but also the air-conditioning systems, which suck in significantly cooler air and so consume less energy. One example of extensive green roofs is the "Kö-Bogen II" retail building in Düsseldorf, which was completed in 2020 by ingenhoven architects. The roof is laid out like a staircase, planted with a hornbeam hedge and accessible to the public. The added value is particularly striking now: while the shops in the lockdown are closed, people can at least spend time on the green roof of the building. Many people are already thinking about what city centres will look like after the pandemic, when there will probably be far fewer shops there. Basically, against the above backdrop, one can only wish for more greenery – open to all, diverse, creating identity and as a necessity to continue to make the city liveable.
