Sector analysis

Germany’s energy market revolution Germany has both the largest population and economy in the EU, accounting for 28% of the Eurozone GDP according to the International Monetary Fund. Its wealth of small and medium sized enterprises, of which 99% of all German companies belong to, creates an active and varied economic base that forms the backbone of German industry.

The country is a major centre for trade and technological development, and while heavily reliant on the service sector, it retains a prominent manufacturing base most notably in the automotive industry, with Germany the fourth largest producer of vehicles in the world. This sector contributes greatly to its export output with the country ranking third in the world for exports, behind only China and the US. Energy is a key foundation in providing the resources needed to support the factories and service industries located across the country. Germany is active across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry, and while phase-outs are planned in the coal and nuclear power sectors, the country is one of the world leaders in renewable energy investment as a result of its pioneering Energiewende (German for energy transition) policy.

In 2017, Germany was the sixth largest consumer of energy in the world. The country has the largest chemical industry in Europe forming a thriving downstream sector and major midstream projects such as the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, under development to expand natural gas import capacity from Russia, mean the country is a destination for billions of dollars of capital expenditure in the oil and gas industry.

In the electricity sector, Germany’s transformational energy policy, Energiewende, has been the driver towards the extensive deployment of renewable energy in the country and it has become a world leader among large industrial nations. Renewable power generated 36% of the country’s electricity in 2017, up from 29% in 2016, helped predominantly by the deployment of wind which is now the second largest electricity source above natural gas, nuclear and coal. Germany wants to achieve an 80% share of renewables in its power sector by 2050.

Much of this capacity will be achieved through the further expansion of offshore wind power. Price reductions and technological advancements have made offshore wind an increasingly attractive technology that is likely to make a significant contribution to reaching Germany’s climate targets while also replacing generation being taken offline in the conventional and nuclear power sectors.

Nuclear power was due to be a key bridging technology as part of the Energiewende policy, however, the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011 saw this part of the policy removed, and a date introduced to phase out all nuclear power generation in the country. Germany is now a major market for nuclear decommissioning in Europe, and the country is seeking relevant goods and services from foreign companies to assist in successfully decommissioning the 17 nuclear power plants that will all shut down by 2022.

The EIC will shortly be releasing its next Country Report, focusing on Germany. It will highlight the major projects in planning and under development across the oil and gas, power, nuclear and renewable sectors in Germany and provide analysis of the political, economic, social and technological factors to consider in the market. It also lays out how to go about doing business in the country and various market entry considerations in order to take advantage of the sizeable opportunities available across Germany’s energy industry.

Inside this issue...

It was a pleasure to catch up with so many of our member companies at the EIC National Awards Dinner last month, especially those who I’ve worked with on contributions to Inside Energy and Energy Focus but never met in person – it really does help to put a face to the name.

While I’m on the subject of contributions to Inside Energy, it’s always great to hear about members’ good news and even better to be able to share it. So, if you’ve won any contracts, made a new hire or launched a new product, let me know about it and I’ll do my best to include your story in our members’ news section.

Anyway, back to the National Awards Dinner – these seem to get better and better each year. The clean plates told their own story about the quality of the cooking, while the waiting staff certainly were attentive…appearing out of nowhere when anyone’s glass got remotely close to half empty. Yet again, the after-dinner entertainment was top drawer with TV impressionist Jon Culshaw of Dead Ringers and Spitting Image fame taking requests from the crowd. Donald Trump came up first, followed by among others Chris Eubank and Prince Charles – who actually makes an appearance in our members’ news section on page 12 having officially opened Balmoral’s new subsea test facility.

Jon was kind enough to stay on after his show to hand out the awards. All the winning entries were very special indeed, although an extra special mention should go to Aberdeenshire’s fire safety specialists Blaze who scooped a trio of awards, which I believe is a new record for the EIC National Awards Dinner.

Blaze dealt with the industry downturn by seeking new markets abroad. Its export journey took it to the copper mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a completely new country and sector for the family run company. In just three year’s they’ve gone from being 100% reliant on the UKCS to now generating 70% of their profits from exports. It’s an incredible story and one which rightly saw them receive the Diversification and Export awards and crowned EIC Company of the Year 2018.

Can you tell us about your work on the Lancaster field?

We have been contracted to provide engineering support during the early production system (EPS) phase of Hurricane Energy’s Lancaster field.

A

Hurricane Energy has agreed to extend Crondall Energy’s current involvement with the project as client’s engineer, supporting the delivery of the Aoku Mizu FPSO vessel.

We are now supporting the project team during the engineering and procurement phase of the FPSO in Europe, the vessel upgrades in Dubai and the installation and startup of the Aoku Mizu at the Lancaster field.

What are you doing to unlock the North Sea’s small pools?

We fully support the work being performed at the Oil and Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) on making marginal fields more economic. Through the OGTC we have been awarded two important studies around lowering the cost of small pools.

A

Our Tieback of the Future study is focused on applying new technology and the circular economy to reduce the cost and environmental footprint of subsea tie-backs.

The other study, Facility of the Future is developing a new concept in production facilities, a not normally manned production buoy incorporating the latest digital technology with the aim of achieving safer, lower-cost production.

How can we achieve the OGA’s Vision 2035 of an additional 3-4bn barrels?

A

We believe that this will require a combination of new technology, increased collaboration and alternative commercial structures. As a specialist independent consultant our role is to challenge conventional thinking.

This is a great time to apply new ideas. Following the recent period of low oil prices the industry is more willing to consider doing things differently and this provides opportunities.

Q

What do the next 12-18 months have in store for Crondall?

A

As market activity returns our plan is to grow the team to meet demand. We have recently opened an office in London and are now developing a strategic partnership to allow us to deliver specialist concept development services in Norway.

We are very excited about launching a phase 2 to our successful Anchoring Pipeline Technology Joint Industry project, and we plan further developments to our PROBE software, which we developed to improve the industry’s capability to efficiently perform pipeline lateral buckling design. We are also working on a number of new developments to lower the costs of subsea developments – watch this space!

Deep Green tidal array Operator: Minesto Value: US$37.5m Development of an 80MW tidal array in Wales. Minesto is considering the next phase of the project, which could see installation of a 10MW array consisting of twenty 500kW tidal kits.

Copperton onshore wind farm Operator: Gestamp Corporation Value: US$160m Located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, the 102MW project will consist of 34 turbines, for which Nordex has secured the supply contract.

Commissioning is scheduled for 2020.

Operator: Petrobras Value: US$5.5bn Aker Solutions has won a contract to provide an SPS and related services for phase I, consisting of 12 vertical subsea trees, four subsea distribution units, three topside master control stations for the FPSO and spare parts.

Operator: DRPIC Value: US$6.1bn Wood has been awarded a contract to provide Terrace Wall double-fired delayed coker heaters for the CDU. The contract will be delivered from its New Jersey facilities and is due to be completed in Q1 2020.

ABLE ABLE’s new game-changer FlareMaster solution integrates proven technology in new ways to solve multiple flare gas measurement problems, reducing reporting uncertainty and cutting O&G emissions taxes How is ABLE thriving?

Building on the technological sophistication of its previous products while staying faithful to its tradition of developing gamechanging solutions that boost efficiency and save costs, ABLE introduced FlareMaster to enable oil and gas companies to accurately measure flare gas and save money by reducing reporting uncertainty.

The challenge As the oil and gas industry grows increasingly conscious of the impact of climate change, legislation is being passed to tax oil and gas producers for carbon emissions from production platforms. This new scenario creates particular challenges for operating companies, as gas emissions taxes are based on the accuracy of flare measurement. Conditions such as blowdown make this task

problematic, as normal sensors stop operating. This leads to measurement loss and increased uncertainty, which in turn increases emissions taxes.

company did a survey of erratic flare meters used by ADNOC in the UAE. One of the problems they faced was that two dominant parts of natural gas – the methane and nitrogen – were separating at low/zero flows, causing a distortion to the ultrasonic sound waves used in the flow measurement equipment. ABLE quickly determined that it would be capable of tackling various problems by developing a single solution.

Taking advantage of the fundamentals of its existing SlugMaster product, a patented intelligent metering system specifically developed to consistently measure liquid flow without interruptions caused by changes in process parameters, ABLE introduced FlareMaster, the latest of its highly successful Master instrumentation products series.

FlareMaster, which has already been patented, is a modular system featuring a Rockwell Automation Allen Bradley controller. The first module has a flare meter which correctly measures (with a +/- 1% uncertainty) the full gas density of the flare, preventing over-reporting of gas emissions and reducing

associated financial penalties. The second module, used in conjunction with the first, equips the flare with a complete dual redundancy supervisory system which allows measurement to take place under all process conditions, including extreme flare stack blowdown. Not only does this innovative product boost efficiency, it also reduces taxes that apply to gas emissions.

FlareMaster sells for approximately £50-60k, providing excellent business prospects for ABLE.

ABLE has been very successful with FlareMaster’s Module 1, having obtained several orders.

The company is about to begin field trials of FlareMaster’s Module 2 at Premier Oil’s Voyager FPSO, with hopes that this solution will establish itself as the global industry standard for coping with flare metering, opening up thousands of market opportunities globally. Each

Should FlareMaster become highly successful in the near future, global demand could be large, triggering a scale-up process. This would require investment in infrastructure and resources, in addition to new manufacturing and leadership roles.

Key findings: For the industry: • Companies should protect their ‘bread and butter’ core business, but be flexible enough to allow opportunities to emerge • Don’t undervalue a new innovation – commercial and technical disciplines should be separated when discussing pricing with customers For the government: • Engagement with innovative companies is necessary to determine their needs • The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy should set FlareMaster as an industry standard, as well as enforce continuous oil and water monitoring for overboard dumping of produced water • The government must step up efforts to promote supporting initiatives among the industry

Advanced Insulation Its MS400 panels are enabling EPC companies to save 50% in topsides weight and enhance fire protection, insulation and blast resistance

How is Advanced Insulation thriving?

The challenge

The company’s innovative MS400 phenolic foam panel has enabled EPC contractors and yards to reduce topsides weight by 50% compared to conventional steelmade products, while providing greater fire protection, thermal insulation and blast resistance.

The weight of topsides is a major issue for oil and gas players worldwide. As market dynamics require increasingly leaner projects and offshore platforms become ever more complex, light-weight topside options are sought to guarantee that E&P projects remain safe as well as

physically and economically feasible.

Moreover, reduced weight not only enables more equipment to go onto the platform itself (e.g. to improve living conditions) but also reduces transport and lifting costs.

The solution One of the earliest opportunities presented to Advanced Insulation to tackle this challenge was BP’s Clair Ridge platform. The project was so critically overweight at the design stage (10%) that the operator started looking for new ideas, challenging everything. In 2009, Advanced Insulation was approached by BP, which was looking for a quick solution for light-weight blast panels to protect the platform underdeck from fire, sea and low temperatures.

The oil major had used stainless steel previously, but found they were not only expensive but heavy and easily-dented.

Advanced Insulation had the ideal solution for BP. Thanks to valuable insights provided by an employee who had worked at a major South Korean shipyard for years, the company pushed for the development of a better blast

protection solution that would last longer, be easier to apply on-site and weigh less. This led to the introduction of the MS400 lightweight syntactic phenolic foam material. Featuring dry-fit panels that can be installed on deck and bulkhead plates, they do not require any welding, which removes corrosion risk. After an extensive testing period by BP, which involved a four-month certification process, the MS400 material showed impressive results: topside weight was reduced from 30kg to 14kg per square metre.

After Clair Ridge, more and more O&G players became aware of the benefits offered by MS400. One such company was the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard, which was working in partnership with CB&I on the topsides of Equinor’s (then Statoil) Mariner project on the UKCS. The qualification process for MS400 – conducted by CB&I – took six months and, as the contractors and operator perceived the product’s advantages, its scope in the project increased from 1,000 to 8,000 square metres. The experience with the Mariner project opened doors for additional business opportunities at Equinor.

The operator, which is pushing for the use environmentally safer materials, now specifies MS400 for all its projects. Advanced Insulation is now working on the Johan Sverdrup project, in which MS400 panels will be installed on a 500 square metre surface.

Member news Amarinth secures pump orders for Mozambique Coral South project

Suffolk-based Amarinth has secured orders totalling US$750k of API 610 OH2 pumps with Plan 53B support systems for the Coral South Development project, Mozambique.

Coral South is the first project in the development of the considerable gas resources discovered by Eni in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of Mozambique.

The Coral field contains approximately 450bn cubic metres of gas. Floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility vessels moored above the offshore natural gas fields will be used to produce, liquefy and store the natural gas at sea. Coral South will be the first ultra-deepwater FLNG facility in the world.

The US$750k comprised of two orders, both secured through the Amarinth Malaysia sales office. The first order, which was required on a 28-week delivery, was for an API 610 OH2 pump with Plan 53B seal support system for installation on a de-sanding package.

This was quickly followed by a larger order for eight API 610 OH2 bespoke pumps with Plan 53B support systems. The bespoke design requirement for these pumps called for a 600lb flange rating on the discharge and suction nozzles, double the normal API 610 loading. These pumps will be used in hazardous areas and so had to be fully IEC/EX compliant on all electrical items and, like the first pump, were also required on a tight 28-week deadline.

Royal launch for Balmoral subsea test facility

HRH Charles, Prince of Wales, officially opened Balmoral Offshore Engineering’s (BOE) subsea test facility in Aberdeen on 3 October 2018.

The new building covers an area the size of more than six tennis courts rising to 18 metres in height with craneage capacity of up to 40 tonnes.

McDermott awarded olefins technology contract in Thailand

McDermott International has been awarded a sizeable technology contract for Map Ta Phut Olefins Company’s (MOC) petrochemical plant in Rayong Province, Thailand.

Jo Bird receives Queen’s Award

McDermott will provide the basic engineering and licence of Lummus’ olefins technology and will design and supply the proprietary SRT® III heater for the MOC Debottleneck project, a parallel gas cracker added to increase plant capacity which will utilise Lummus’ side cracker technology.

Handing over the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation to MD Guy Atkins, Mrs Anne Maw, LordLieutenant of Somerset, praised the skills and commitment of everyone in the company and expressed admiration at the precision and ability that went into the manufacturing process.

We have worked with MOC since their first project in 2005.

This additional capacity will be realised by using our unique side cracker technology, which permits the cost effective expansion of a liquid feed plant that has already reached its maximum capacity using conventional technology.

Gardner Denver unveils new transit compressor at IAA

Following three years of development, Gardner Denver launched its new Hydrovane TX02 transit compressor at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018, in Hannover, Germany.

The TX02 has been developed specifically for use with the newest commercial hybrid-electric and fullyelectric energy-efficient vehicles and offers the lowest noise levels available from any compressor on the market.

Speaking at the event, Jonathan Marsh, Product Director at Gardner Denver, said, ‘Today’s new generation of hybrid and fully-electric vehicles are now running quieter and cleaner than ever before and any onboard equipment must comply with these fundamental changes.

‘As a result, we have re-invented every aspect of our compressed air offering, fine-tuning the TX02 technology to give simplified operation and straightforward integration in to vehicle powertrains while delivering the lowest noise levels of any transit compressor on the market.

‘The launch of the TX02 marks the next chapter in Gardner Denver’s transition as a major automotive industry supplier.’

Somerset-based Jo Bird, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of storage cabinets to protect vital lifesaving equipment, has won its second Queen’s Award in the space of five years.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are among the UK’s most prestigious business awards to celebrate and encourage business excellence. Out of 1.8 million companies in the UK, only around 200 receive a Queen’s Award.

Five years earlier the company received its first Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. The company exports its products across the globe to over 30 different countries.

US Naval Surface Warfare Center selects Sonardyne for underwater vehicle testing

Underwater target tracking technology from Houston-based Sonardyne has been chosen by the US Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Carderock Division for use at its South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility (SFOMF).

Located in Maryland, Carderock Division is the US Navy’s research, engineering, modelling, and test centre for surface and undersea technologies.

It is the largest, most comprehensive establishment of its kind in the world. Thanks to its proximity to the Gulf Stream, Carderock’s SFOMF provides a demanding open ocean test environment for subsea systems and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) in development for both the Navy and wider maritime industry.

To support this work, Carderock Division has ordered Sonardyne’s high accuracy Ranger 2 Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) acoustic tracking system.

The Ranger 2 system will enable operators to track the precise underwater position of any subsea system or UUV that comes through the SFOMF for testing. The system offers the capability of tracking systems in both shallow and deepwater, near the surface and over very long ranges.

The SFOMF has housed an active, continuously operating Navy range for more than 50 years.

Its main mission is to perform electromagnetic signature tests of Navy assets, using multiple fixed, inwater electromagnetic and acoustic measurement sites.

Sparrows was commended for providing 102 bespoke WindMaster turbine platform cranes to the East Anglian ONE offshore wind farm for ScottishPower Renewables.

The WindMaster, which was specifically developed for the renewables market, is the only luffing crane designed and manufactured in the UK suitable for the offshore wind industry.

Sparrows further strengthened its position in the global sector in December last year with the acquisition of Alpha Offshore Service A/S. The Danish-based company provides engineering personnel and inspection services to the wind energy industry.

UK and Europe news Regional update October saw a broad variety of events delivered in the UK. EIC CEO Stuart Broadley presented the key findings and recommendations of the Survive & Thrive II report at the beginning of the month.

The EIC will host a Releasing the Potential of Renewable Energy lunch briefing with Dr Alan Whitehead MP, Shadow Secretary for Energy and Climate Change on 15 November at The Industry Forum in London.

This was followed by an Opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa export showcase featuring speakers from Tullow Oil, Wood, Worley Parsons and the Ugandan National Oil Company. This event was followed by an exclusive networking reception at the House of Commons hosted

by Lord Popat, HM Trade Envoy to Uganda and Rwanda.

Individual meetings with Britain in South East Asia (BiSEA) representatives from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam ran in our London office and we held business presentations with Sinopec in London and Aberdeen introducing delegates to supply chain opportunities in China, as well as how to do business with the company through its international online marketplace platform, through which 90% of its transactions are made.

A highlight of the year, the EIC’s National Awards Dinner returned to 8 Northumberland Avenue with 350 guests enjoying good food, superb entertainment and excellent networking. We handed out 10 awards on the night. A very satisfied Blaze landed the Diversification and Export Awards as well as being crowned EIC Company of the Year 2018.

This year we were extremely privileged to have Baroness Fairhead deliver the keynote speech and also to assist in presenting the Export Award. Jon Culshaw, with his warmth and gentle humour, provided first-class entertainment with his impressions to order. For pictures from the dinner see page 24.

In November we look forward to events such as Opportunities in the Energy from Waste sector on 1 November. Providing an introduction to this rapidly growing sector, it will explore developing technologies such as advanced conversion technologies and combined heat and power, as well as looking to the future of the sector and advances and projects in waste to chemicals and fuels.

Hydrogen could prove to be a key tool for decarbonisation, although there are technical and logistical challenges to overcome. Clearly a subject of interest, our event hosted by Costain at their Manchester premises on 7 November, the Hydrogen Economy: Decarbonising the UK Energy Sector is now fully booked.

Lastly, dates which should be in everyone’s diary are 27 and 28 November for EIC Connect Oil & Gas. With a full and compelling speaker line up, a combination of conference sessions, supply chain briefings, highlevel round table discussions and one-to-one meetings with global operators and contractors, it promises to be a very lucrative two days. We are delighted to be welcoming the Rt Hon Liam Fox, MP, Secretary of State for International Trade, who will deliver the keynote address, providing a timely update on Brexit and what this means to the UK supply chain.

Floating offshore wind sector moves forward

Europe’s floating offshore wind sector witnessed key developments this summer, with new project announcements and contracts awarded. Equinor has strengthened plans to construct an 88MW floating project in the Northern North Sea, designed to supply 35% of annual electricity used by the Snorre and Gullfaks field platforms in the Tampen area. In France, Ideol’s 2MW Floatgen project began supplying power to the French grid in September.

Lastly, developers of the 25MW WindFloat Atlantic project in Portugal have signed an order with MHI Vestas for three V164-8.4MW turbines, as well as with First Subsea for the provision of platform mooring connectors.

Middle East news Regional update

November is one of the busiest months of the year for the Dubai office. We start out with our attendance at Africa Oil Week (an event not to be missed by anybody who Terry W illis has the African continent on their radar) which is then closely followed

by ADIPEC, the world’s largest oil and gas exhibition and conference where the EIC hosts the largest of all its UK pavilions worldwide which this year consists of over 70 companies and for the first time encompasses a presentation area as well as a meeting area for one-toone appointments.

During ADIPEC we are holding a networking reception on the evening of Tuesday 13 November at the A-Loft Hotel where once again it will be our pleasure to host Baroness Rona Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion at the Department for International Trade. In addition, we are also hoping to engage with the newly appointed Trade Commissioner Simon Penney plus the UK Ambassador Patrick Moody and Consul General Andrew Jackson who is also responsible for DIT activities across the region.

Another notable event taking place later in November is the Saudi Aramco IKTVA event. IKTVA or In Kingdom Total Value Added is the local content programme which has continued to be successfully marketed by Aramco across its whole business. Like last year, the plan is to have a mini-exhibition where all the main players have a stand plus there will be a programme of presentations which will illustrate future business opportunities plus how the programme works. Once again, we were privileged to have Lord Popat, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy for Uganda, taking the lead and thus ensuring an excellent visit. The outlook is certainly bright for East Africa as a whole and particularly for Uganda, Kenya and Mozambique where incidentally, we were in September.

GE Power JV picks up contract for El Dabaa nuclear power plant

AAEM, a joint venture (JV) including GE Power and power engineering company Atomenergomash, has secured a contract to supply the turbine island equipment for the US$30bn El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt. Under the contract, AAEM will provide the basic design of four conventional islands and supply four nuclear turbine generator sets for Egypt’s first nuclear power plant. The two firms will also provide technical field advisory services during installation and commissioning of supplied equipment for the El Dabaa project.

Ensco and Rowan agree US$12bn merger

London-headquartered offshore drilling contractor Ensco has agreed to acquire Rowan Companies to create a combined company with a value of US$12bn. The new company will have a fleet of 82 rigs and a presence across six continents. The transaction, subject to approval by the shareholders of Ensco, Rowan and the regulatory authorities, is due to be completed during the first half of 2019.

Rowan shareholders will own a 39.5% stake in the new company.

The US is seeing exponential interest in the offshore wind industry. Industry experts estimate the US has a potential for 4,223GW and expect 2.5GW to be installed by 2023, and 8GW by 2028. New Jersey released a solicitation for 1.1GW in September 2018, with plans to issue two additional solicitations for 1.2GW in 2020 and 2022. Hawaii currently has approximately 800MW of unsolicited lease requests offshore Oahu and plans to announce an additional lease sale following a call for nominations. Future solicitations are also in the works for leasing areas offshore New York and California.

Shell takes FID on US$40bn LNG project in Canada

The conference provides delegates with a better understanding of the regulatory framework involved in identifying areas of the ocean for offshore wind development, in-depth knowledge of permitting an offshore wind project, and insight into important details on stakeholder engagement, workforce training, and supply chain development. Shell Canada Energy has taken a final investment decision (FID) on LNG Canada, a US$40bn LNG liquefaction and export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia. The scope of the project will include two LNG storage tanks, processing cooling towers, plant piping and facility site flare systems.

The project is expected to create approximately 4,500 jobs during the first phase of construction, with a potential to increase to 7,500 jobs during peak periods. Stakeholders in the project include Shell with 40%; PETRONAS with 25%; Mitsubishi Corporation and PetroChina, each with 15%; and KOGAS with the remaining 5%.

South America news Regional update

Hosting the UK pavilion at Rio Oil & Gas is always a special occasion. This year it was made even better with the Brazilian market picking up in 2018. In partnership with Amand a Duho DIT, the pavilion gathered n nine exhibitors and was filled with activities such as over 40 one-to-one meetings with procurement representatives from key operators and contractors such as Petrobras, BHGE, Brasa Shipyard, Halliburton SBM and Wood, and 10 EICDataStream sessions as well as expert advice on how to get registered with Petrobras.

As planned, lots of excellent network opportunities arose due to all the activities we’d organised including the opening of the pavilion by the Brazilian Executive Secretary at the Ministry of Mines and Energy Mr Marcio Felix and HM British Ambassador to Brazil Vijay Rangarajan. The bagpipe band we invited echoed throughout the pavilion attracting lots of other delegates. As did the two sessions of whisky tasting sessions we hosted with about 10 different single malts on offer.

Brazilian auction for surplus volumes planned for 2019 A special bidding round that will offer acreage in the pre-salt area known as the ‘transfer-of-rights’ surplus volumes is planned to take place in the first half of 2019. The ‘transfer-of-rights’ term refers to a 2010 transaction between the government and Petrobras in which the company was allowed to produce up to 5bn barrels of oil from selected blocks in the pre-salt area. Additional appraisal work found that the blocks contained additional volumes amounting to at least 8.3bn barrels of oil equivalent. Although preparations are being made for the bidding round, the general election this year means that any decisions on the auction’s execution will be made by the next administration.

We once again organised the 6th edition of the Rio Samba & Gas gathering. About 40 guests enjoyed a pleasant evening at Rio Scenarium with great Brazilian music, while having the opportunity to network with oil and gas industry players.

There are currently 42 FPSOs operating in Brazil and 50 more expected units through to 2027 according to Brazil’s ANP – the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels. Colombia to organise first renewable energy auction

Colombia’s first auction for renewable energy projects will be held in 2019. The government is looking to award 10-year power purchase agreements for 1GW of new capacity at the tender process, which will take place on 2 January. Auction rules will be made public on 1 October, while qualified bidders will be revealed on 17 December.

Preliminary information shows that 54 projects in the hydro, wind, solar PV and biomass segments have been registered. The auction is part of the South American country’s push to generate 1.5GW of renewable electricity by 2022.

Asia Pacific news Regional update

Power and renewables projects especially wind and solar continue to increase in value and numbers across the Asia Pacific region.

Azman The countries which are Nasir active in this sector include Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. Two reasons for the current trend are the need to meet an everincreasing energy demand and the pressure to meet pledges made at COP21.

Japan is seeking to make renewable sources central to its energy supply and ensure a stable flow from weatherdependent solar and wind with advances in battery and hydrogen power technology, under a forthcoming strategy through to 2050. The government has said renewable energy such as solar and wind power should be at the centre of the country’s energy plan given falling costs and technological progress in the field. Recently, ENGIE and Electric Power Development (J-POWER) signed a memorandum of understanding related to nonexclusive collaboration on power projects, particularly large-scale commercial offshore wind projects.

Taiwan is seeking a dramatic energy transformation targeting 20% of its energy mix to come from renewable energy sources by 2025 (approximately 27GW of capacity). A new law is being put in place to aid the transformation and is backed by attractive feed in tariffs and a supportive regulatory framework. These conditions are already attracting interest from foreign investors.

Taiwan’s offshore wind market grabbed headlines this year, first with the government’s award of a reported aggregate capacity of 3,836MW for the development of 10 separate offshore wind farms in April and again just recently with the award of a further 1,664MW of capacity via competitive auction. The scale of the sector and competitive tariffs achieved at auction suggest Taiwan now joins the ranks of established offshore wind markets elsewhere in the world, and all in the context of an already booming solar PV industry.

Thailand is in the midst of a renewable energy revolution. Just three years ago it seemed fanciful to imagine renewable sources of energy accounting for approximately 20% of its installed capacity by 2036 but now it seems feasible to imagine nearly half of the country’s installed capacity coming from renewables in 20 years. Given the abundance of solar energy potential, it is clear that solar PV will be the most significant driver of this revolution. Other renewable sources, such as wind and biomass, will also play significant roles in Thailand’s diversified energy mix.

Myanmar lines up new licensing rounds in 2019

Myanmar plans to hold new onshore and offshore licensing rounds in the first six months of next year, the first in six years. The offshore round is expected to be opened in the first quarter, to be followed by an onshore licensing round before the end of June.

Bangladesh deal for largest LNG-based power plant

Bangladesh’s state-run North-West Power Generation Company and Germany’s Siemens have signed a joint development agreement for a 3,600MW power plant at Payra, southern Bangladesh that will be operated on regasified liquefied natural gas (LNG). The plant is estimated to require US$3bn of investment.

New PSC signed in Mongolia Australia’s Elixir Petroleum has signed a production sharing contract (PSC) for the Nomgon coal bed methane gas permit in Mongolia. The permit holder is Golden Horde, which Elixir has agreed to acquire.

A seismic acquisition programme is planned for the second quarter of 2019 and an initial drilling programme in the second half of 2019.
