Five FPSO projects to look out for in South America The offshore oil and gas market in South America has traditionally been associated with floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units, mainly because of Brazil’s various deepwater exploration and production (E&P) projects. In recent years, frontier exploration work in other areas in the region has further improved prospects for the FPSO market. Five South American projects in this segment are highlighted below:

Sépia Another key Brazilian project in the pre-salt province is Sépia, one of six fields ceded by the government to Petrobras under an oil-for-shares deal concluded in 2010. The field is estimated to hold 1.1bn barrels of oil equivalent and its development will also feature an FPSO with an oil processing capacity of 180,000bbl/d. Unlike Libra, however, the unit’s gas processing capacity will be 5MMcm/d. The bidding process for the Sépia FPSO, another tender that has been plagued by delays, saw the participation of BW Offshore, Exmar (bidding in partnership with local company Queiroz Galvão Naval), MODEC and SBM Offshore. MODEC came out as the lowest bidder and an award is expected during this present quarter. The FPSO is expected to start operations in 2020. Liza Guyana put itself on the oil and gas map in 2015 thanks to the massive Liza oil discovery. Discovered by ExxonMobil, Liza is located on the Stabroek licence and is estimated to hold up to 2bn barrels of oil equivalent. A 120,000bbl/d FPSO will be installed in the first development phase and a second 150,000bbl/d FPSO is already being planned as part of a second phase. In December 2016 SBM Offshore was awarded contracts to perform the unit’s front-end engineering design (FEED) and, subject to a final investment decision (expected by the middle of the year), supply the first FPSO. Start-up of the first phase is set for 2020.

Sea Lion Discovered in 2010, Sea Lion is the most successful discovery made off the Falkland Islands to date. It is operated by UK-based Premier Oil and contains 517m barrels of potentially recoverable resources. SBM Offshore was awarded a FEED contract for an 85,000bbl/d FPSO in January 2016 and a final investment decision from the operator is expected during the second half of 2017. Echidna Operated by Karoon, Echidna is located in Brazil’s Santos Basin but outside the pre-salt area. The discovery is smaller compared to the other four projects with 75m barrels of potentially recoverable resources. In 2016 the operator announced plans to install an FPSO with a capacity of up to 60,000bbl/d. In April 2017 Wood Group obtained a contract from Karoon to provide owner’s engineering services for the project. © 2003-2017 Shutterstock, Inc

Libra Brazil’s flagship E&P project, Libra is a pre-salt oil field which holds up to 12bn barrels of recoverable reserves. Awarded to a consortium formed by Petrobras (operator and 30% interest), Shell (20%), Total (20%), CNPC and CNOOC (10% each) in October 2013, the field’s pilot production phase will feature an FPSO able to process 180,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) and 12m cubic metres per day (MMcm/d) of oil and gas, respectively. A muchdelayed bidding process for a charter contract attracted bids from BW Offshore, MODEC and SBM Offshore and an award is expected this month. The unit is scheduled to begin operations in late 2020.

Pietro

Looking ahead FPSO-related projects will continue to provide opportunities for the local supply chain in the long-term. Petrobras plans to install 19 FPSOs between 2017 and 2021 and the Libra field alone is expected to require 18 such units throughout its development. The potential for business opportunities will continue to increase as additional Brazilian pre-salt fields are awarded (two bidding rounds will take place this year) and other fields are discovered elsewhere in the region. EIC Survive and ABLE Innovative flow measurement products under the ‘Master’ series

How is ABLE thriving?

ABLE has been developing successful bespoke solutions to tackle customers’ flow measurement needs, helping them to boost efficiency and lower costs. The company has been integrating existing technologies, adding successive layers of innovation to its own products, and using its own algorithms to tackle challenges that previously could not be solved.

The challenge

In 2004, the company received a request from Talisman and a client in Central Asia to develop a system which could robustly and effectively measure liquid flow under all conditions. Two existing ultrasonic technologies – DERF time-of-flight and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) – were already being used, but neither technology could provide a measurement solution for all measurement conditions. In 2010, ABLE was approached by TUV NEL, which at the time had a Joint Industry Project (JIP), where a solution was needed to quantify the content not just of water, but also oil and gas i.e. a true multiphase flow measurement. Between 2012-14, Apache Corporation was seeking the Holy Grail of partially full pipe mass flow measurement to optimise and automate its drilling operations.

In 2015, Total approached ABLE needing a multi-phase metering system, especially for wet gas.

The solution

ABLE succeeded in developing fullyoperational solutions. For Talisman, ABLE combined the FFT and DERF time-of-flight ultrasonic technologies, using its own patented algorithm, and created SlugMaster, an integrated system capable of determining the flow of liquids to meet produced water fiscal requirements, without interruptions. For TUV NEL, ABLE introduced PhaseMaster, as a dual phase version of its existing SlugMaster. At the time no truly clamp-on multiphase flow meter existed anywhere in the world and ABLE provided the first patented prototype. The PhaseMaster delivered better than 1% uncertainty for liquids and typically 5% for gas. For Apache, once again adapting its existing technologies and using its own patented algorithms, ABLE introduced MudMaster to meet mass flow measurement requirements under partially full pipe conditions. For Total in 2015, ABLE took PhaseMaster a step further into the wet gas measurement arena. The company used an existing liquid PhaseMaster system and once again developed a fully functioning solution that met the customers’ wet gas requirement.

Aiken Rapid diversification from offshore to onshore; collaborating to accommodate excellence

Story type: #diversification #collaboration Benefits: Order intake £1.6m Key findings: For the industry: • Offshore oil and gas businesses can apply their skills and resources to multiple different sectors

How is Aiken thriving?

Aiken has overcome the rapid downturn by successfully and radically diversifying into other sectors. Previously focused on the offshore oil and gas market, Aiken refocused its resources and management to move into multiple completely new onshore sectors, through the collaborative mindset it created over the last two years.

The challenge

Like many other companies in Aberdeen, Aiken was greatly impacted by the downturn of the oil and gas industry and its effect on activities on the UK Continental Shelf. Although the company had engaged with BP on a large project on the Magnus platform, as this contract came to an end it became clear there was an obvious shortage of work available in the offshore market. This negative outlook reluctantly led to a downsizing process, although a 30-strong core team was maintained. It was acknowledged change was needed, and fast.

The solution

Change began to take place in late 2015, when the company realised that diversification was needed. Aiken found Jan Snel, a Dutch company with onshore module solutions. Sign theversion EICOnline newsletter This isup an for edited of the case study.

Aiken decided to embrace collaboration, a culture change for the company. A sole agent deal was struck and Aiken began tracking onshore tenders by using E-Tracker, opening their eyes to the wealth of opportunities beyond their traditional offshore markets. Aiken developed other collaborative partnerships focusing on a few key onshore sectors. The first ‘flat pack’ modular concept contract with Blackfriars railway station in London, for installation, operation and maintenance work was quickly followed by business for pre-assembled modules at Gatwick airport. Aiken is currently forging two additional key partnerships: one with Hunter, a US company specialising in blast rated modules and most recently one with Global Advantech strengthening its environmental division. This expansion into new areas hasn’t been without its challenges: at one time Aiken saw itself participating in too many tenders, which stretched the company’s resources too much, following analysis of the problems being encountered the management team refined its approach to pursuing only appropriate tenders for work. A purpose-built Jan Snel facility in the UK is being considered, which could potentially lead to a full joint venture with Aiken.

• Diversification can be accelerated through collaboration • Collaboration requires radical mindset change to bring fast success • Use of business intelligence tools accelerates business development focus For the government: • Collaboration should be supported at the supply chain level, not just between operators Government support? One-to-one

with Mark Brown CEO, Worldwide Recruitment Solutions Worldwide Recruitment Solutions (WRS) is a leading global recruitment solutions business servicing the needs of clients and contractors worldwide in the energy, infrastructure and engineering sectors. Its UK head office and global hubs in key geographies provide expertise worldwide; its footprint is supported by a selected network of approved and experienced partners who provide a host of in-country services, supporting its activities.

Q

WRS has recently launched its APAC power division, can you tell us a bit more about it?

Q

What are you looking forward to most over the next 12-18 months?

The launch of a power division is part of our wider growth strategy and is a natural evolution for the business. Market indicators, existing clients and the region’s commitment to developing its energy infrastructure were all major factors in this launch. Our newly-appointed Regional Director, Paul Wakefield, has previous experience of the Asia Pacific (APAC) power sector and has both a strong technical knowledge and network to make a difference for our clients. Paul’s vision for the business is to position WRS as a staffing partner of choice in helping the region develop and he has some exciting initiatives underway.

The continued growth and development of our presence in APAC. Having grown the team in Singapore and established a joint venture in Malaysia, WRS has had an eventful two years in the region, and the projects we are tracking via the EIC mean it’s an exciting time for the business. Our service offering to clients will continue to evolve (we have recently completed a salary and compensation benchmarking project for a chemicals client expanding into Asia) and as the energy markets continue to innovate and develop, it will be increasingly important that WRS positions itself ahead of the curve.

A

Q

What’s been your biggest success story in the last year?

Our work on the RAPID Project in Pengerang, Malaysia has transformed the way we do business in Asia. We set up a joint venture with SPS Oilfield Services in Kuala Lumpur (with whom we conduct our Malaysian business), and this has worked well and taught us a lot about the value of partnerships. Through our activity on RAPID we have already mobilised/placed over 100 personnel, a number that is forecast to grow significantly as the project ramps up this year.

A

A

Q

The industry recognises that a skills gap is emerging. How do you think we can encourage the next generation of energy industry workers?

As experienced engineering staff retire, we need younger people to take the helm and help to prevent a widening skills gap from developing within the energy and wider engineering sectors. These are specialised jobs, which require years of training and experience, so this is something we need to be addressing now. Apprenticeships are one answer, but not the only one – appealing to a wider audience is also

important, including minorities and women, helping people to see that these industries provide great career scope.

Another consideration is of course Brexit. Nobody knows what will happen in the years to come just yet, so we must prepare for a changing industry, where we may not be able to simply ‘ship in’ expertise. This is an issue that might be particularly pertinent for Hinkley Point C.

Q

What about WRS would come as a surprise to other EIC members?

WRS mobilises some 400 seafarers per month as part of our crew management service for the offshore industry. Our in-house travel department sources visas, work permits, and manages all travel requirements supported by a network of partners that provide in-country services as per our clients’ requirement. I wanted WRS to add value to our clients above and beyond a traditional recruitment business – our experience of compliantly hosting and moving people around the world provides an option for clients to operate a flexible workforce that can be scaled up or down as required, this itself has delivered significant cost savings to our clients by affording them a level of flexibility around fixed costs that proves beneficial in uncertain times.

Overseas events Showcase your company in the UK National Pavilion at ADIPEC 2017

The EIC will again be organising and managing the UK National Pavilion at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC), one of the world’s most influential oil and gas events. ADIPEC takes place every year in Abu Dhabi, the heart of the oil and gas industry. Exhibiting at ADIPEC, 13-16 November, gives your company an incredible opportunity to access the key players in this exciting region.

The Middle East: a buoyant market

The Middle East remains the world’s top oil producing and exporting region. In its latest Energy Outlook for the next 20 years, BP has forecast that the region will account for a third of the world’s oil production in 2035, with a 22% expansion of oil production supported by increased capacities in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran. Oil exports will increase, despite strong growth in regional oil consumption which is likely to make the region the largest consumer of oil per capita by 2035, surpassing North America. Middle East energy consumption will rise by 60% by 2035, with 96% of demand still met by fossil fuels. The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook report predicts real GDP growth rates for the Middle East region of 2.3% in 2017 and 3.2% in 2018. Despite the global energy industry currently undergoing a structural transformation, prompted by decarbonisation policies resulting from the Paris Agreement (COP21) and technology advancements significantly increasing the cost-competitiveness of renewable sources such as solar and wind power, over the longer-term, Middle East producers possess important advantages to thrive. The average cost of production in the Gulf region, estimated at around US$10 per barrel, is the lowest in the world and Middle East producers are already implementing plans to diversify their economies long before demand growth for fossil fuels reaches its inflection point, after 2035. Until then, increased reliance on abundant and low-cost Middle Eastern oil seems inescapable and Gulf countries will remain at the heart of the oil and gas industry. ADIPEC 2016

ADIPEC: Facilitating global business

Since its launch in 1984, ADIPEC has provided an unrivalled opportunity for experts and professionals to come together to network with peers and win business. ADIPEC remains in the top three oil and gas events across the world and is the largest energy event in the Middle East and North Africa region. The event is developing rapidly, with the 2016 edition breaking the event’s previous international participation record with over 95,000 visitors from 135 countries. Attendees from leading companies such as BP, CEPSA, Dragon Oil, Shell, Total and Wintershall will provide the opportunity for companies to engage and network with global industry leaders.

The UK National Pavilion

Exhibiting in the UK National Pavilion at ADIPEC will offer significant benefits and opportunities including: prime stand location, enhanced unique stand design, pavilion lounge, promotion in industry publications, entry in the UK Pavilion brochure and much more. With offices in Dubai and across the world, the EIC can offer tailored regional and global advice and facilitate meetings and networking opportunities with key decision makers and industry players. To request the event floorplan, application pack and further information, please contact fern.canning@the-eic.com

The EIC Pavilion at ADIPEC gives us the perfect platform to meet new clients, get enquiries and ultimately win new business. Ellie Tough, TWMA

The EIC provides great support during events and is always happy to go the extra mile. Owen James, Pharos Marine

Spotlight on technology Green’s Power Ltd

www.greenspower.co.uk

ECONOMISERS AND WASTE HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEMS Green’s is a world leader in the design and manufacture of bespoke waste heat recovery systems that often include its patented economisers. The company helps the energy industry reduce emissions, improve efficiency and cut costs. Alongside its engineering and production capabilities, it provides inspection, repairs, spares and maintenance services for virtually all makes of boilers and related equipment.

Waste heat recovery explained

A waste heat recovery unit/heat exchanger recovers heat from hot streams that would otherwise go unused into the atmosphere usually taking exit gases from boilers. The diagram above shows waste heat recovery using an economiser application, technology that was first developed by Green’s in the 1800s.

The technology

The main equipment includes: Economiser – waste heat in the exhaust gas leaving the boiler is passed over the economiser’s heating surface, which often includes finned tubes heating the feedwater that passes through the tubes before it enters the boiler, which increases boiler efficiency. Economisers also enable boilers to react more readily to loads by using heated feedwater, protecting them from thermal stresses caused by relatively cold water entering which helps to prolong boiler service life too. Waste heat boilers or exhaust gas boilers can be used to create steam without needing a separate boiler. This steam can be used in other processes and, if superheated, drive a steam turbine to generate electricity. Flue gas coolers cool down flue gas from boilers and utilise waste heat to heat up water which is then used in the plant. Air preheaters preheat combustion air and are also used for drying fuel. It can be applied at the very end of boiler exhaust systems as a flue gas and air heat exchanger.

Using the recovered waste heat

Common uses include: • pre-heating combustion air for boilers and furnaces • pre-heating fresh air used to ventilate the building • hot water generation including pre-heating boiler feed water • direct steam generation for power generation • space heating • drying fuel Any EIC members who wish to be profiled in this section please contact Edward White, EIC Editor and Communications Manager edward.white@the-eic.com

EIC training Blame is no game

Imagine this: a worker is killed when a broken part is ejected from a machine at high speed through a guard that should have stopped it. This is a tragedy for the worker, their family and friends, their colleagues, their employer – the list is a long one. The death is investigated and there are questions to be answered. Was it an unforeseeable accident? Did the worker’s actions contribute to their death? Was the guard open when it should have been closed? Did the guard fail? Was the employer at fault? Was the machine poorly designed? Employers are responsible for the safety of their workers but manufacturers and suppliers are responsible for the safety of the products they put on the market, including those that employers provide for their workers to use. When an incident occurs the blame may shift from the worker or employer using the product to the supplier or manufacture who produced it. Therefore, anyone who puts a product on the market or into use is required to ensure that product is safe. This can be done by: • Identifying the applicable product safety legislation • Making an assessment of the risks and reducing them until they are safe • Complying with essential requirements or harmonised standards • Testing, verifying and recording • Following the correct compliance procedures and declaring compliance • Marking the product In our imaginary incident the manufacturer of the machine will hold a technical file for the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations. This file is considered a strategic asset and demonstrates how a manufacturer has fulfilled its duty of care during design and production. The file contains documents that can prove that a product was designed to comply with the machinery directives that apply to it. If the design or construction of the machine is thought to be a contributory cause of the incident the file will be closely examined – if the manufacturer has done its job properly they will be exonerated. To give EIC members a better understanding of the machinery directives and how to comply with them Amtri Veritas will be delivering a one-day course on 12 July at the EIC offices in London. Sign Get inup touch for the EICOnline newsletter

Visit Emailwww.the-eic.com/Forms/NewsletterSignup training@the-eic.com • Phone +44 (0)20 7091 8600

You will learn about applicable directives, the key role of risk assessment and risk reduction, how to meet Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSRs), what goes into a technical file, which compliance procedure to follow and how to declare compliance and mark your product. This course will be delivered by Alastair Meakin, Scheme Manager – Amtri Veritas. Alastair has 20 years experience in machinery directive compliance and applying European Standards and European legislation. He has been involved in both Annex IV EC-type examinations and voluntary examination of machinery, including machinery such as injection moulding machines, saws, presses, machining centres, electro-discharge machinery, robots and wing assembly machinery. Middle East news Regional update

June will see us adjusting our working practices to take into account Ramadan. This is the time of year when working hours are reduced and it becomes a little bit more Terry W illis challenging to realise one’s objectives. For those of you who may not be familiar with Ramadan, it is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar when the muslim community abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. It can be a time of reflection and prayer, when friends and family meet in a sedate atmosphere embracing the holy month. This change of lifestyle inevitably has an effect on working practices, so UK companies need to be aware of this cultural amendment when seeking out contacts throughout the month. The time of the day when the fast is broken is called Iftar and it is our intention to host a networking night on 13 June at the Mint Leaf, an ever popular venue with members.

June is also the month when we bid farewell to one of our serviced office occupants. Bob Jennings from Seatrax has been with us for the statutory two years and is moving on to pastures new which leaves a vacancy for any member contemplating a move to the region. For a competitive price, we provide a fully serviced office within our own offices and arrange for residency and other necessary requirements in order to be fully compliant with local laws. Please contact the office if this option is of interest dubai@the-eic.com We intend to run another delegation to Tehran in September. This is a unique occasion where members can get a full overview of opportunities in Iran as well as make a number of important contacts. Please sign up and we look forward to welcoming everybody in September. There are plans to visit Kazakhstan in late September as well as Uganda in November. We are also planning a Gulf tour taking in the markets of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait in October. Details of all these events can be found on our website. Iran lifts offshore gas production capacity at South Pars

Iran has completed six offshore gas projects valued at US$20bn at the giant South Pars field, lifting natural gas production to 570m cubic metres a day. Phases 17 to 21 of South Pars came onstream, with each phase producing 28m cubic metres of gas a day, apart from phase 19 which produces 56m cubic metres a day. The increase in gas production at South Pars puts it almost on par with neighbours Qatar, the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

With EIC Connect Oil & Gas UAE completed, our efforts move forward to ADIPEC which this year is running from 13-16 November. This is now the largest event that the EIC runs and, at the time of writing, there are still a number of stands available for this prestigious occasion. Qatar to develop new gas project after 12-year freeze

Qatar Petroleum has announced plans for a new development in the offshore North field after a 12-year freeze on new projects. The company will develop a patch in the southern section of the field that it shares with Iran, with production expected to begin in the next five to seven years. The North field, and the connected South Pars field in Iran, is the world’s biggest reservoir of non-associated gas. The development will have a capacity of 2bn cubic feet of gas per day, or 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent. Qatar is currently the world’s top exporter of liquefied natural gas, producing around 77m tonnes annually.

Asia Pacific news We are organising a major event in Jakarta, Indonesia on 1 November 2017 in collaboration with the main oil and gas regulator SKK Azman MIGAS. The event will be Nasir held in SKK MIGAS’s own building which indicates the support the EIC is receiving from them. The latest update is that we are adding a session where six member companies will give briefings on their latest technology for cost optimisation, enhancing efficiency and production. SKK MIGAS is particularly interested to hear from and meet with UK companies with experience in the North Sea, especially in the areas of deepwater production, enhanced oil recovery and utilisation of latest technologies for boosting production. We are also expecting up to 15 international oil companies currently operating in Indonesia to give short briefings on their supply chain needs for the next few years. Indonesia’s state-held energy company Pertamina plans to invest US$54bn in upstream production by 2025 to raise its oil, gas and geothermal output by 185% or around 1.91m barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), compared to just 670,000boepd for November 2016. Indonesia is also seeking to more than double its refined oil production capacity to 2.3m boepd by 2025 from the current production of 1m bpd. In Malaysia, Sky-Futures Partners Ltd has been chosen by PETRONAS to be the Chairman for the Asset Integrity Working Group as part of PETRONAS’ cost reduction initiatives called CORAL 2.0. The EIC plans to invite SkyFutures to give a business presentation to share their experience and lessons learned with EIC members in the near future. Our Regional Analyst, Angeline Elias, was invited to speak at Roxtec’s Power & Renewables seminar in Singapore on 18-19 May 2017 where she gave an update on renewables project opportunities in the region to some 30 delegates from Roxtec’s various units. Angeline also recently published an article in Offshore Energy magazine titled ‘Opportunities in South East Asia for 2017-18’. Finally, we would like to urge member companies to visit the UK pavilion at Oil and Gas Asia 2017 to be held in the Kuala Lumpur Conference & Exhibition Centre on 11-13 July 2017. Minister of Mines and Energy Fernando Coelho Filho said at OTC last month, ‘Put your money aside for the Brazilian bidding rounds coming this year.’ Offering a further Clariss e Roch positive outlook for the a industry, Carla Lacerda, Exxon’s President for Brazil also commented, ‘ExxonMobil sees great opportunities in Brazil.’ It was discussed that significant changes have contributed to the positive mood such as having multiple operators being able to join pre-salt fields; the soon to be announced reduction/simplification of local content rules; promotion of unitisation of key fields and having a predictable calendar of bidding rounds. There is also a great link between the supply chain in Guyana and Brazil, and British companies established in Brazil could take advantage of this link. Many of the companies in the UK pavilion expressed interest in Latin America. The one-to-one meetings with advisors from the UK Department for International Trade held in the UK Lounge were a huge success, with Brazil, Mexico and Trinidad fully booked as well as a lot of interest in countries like Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela.

In June, Brazil Offshore Conference & Exhibition is taking place again in Macaé and is focused on the OPEX side of business. The EIC Rio team is visiting the show and we look forward to meeting members there. Petrobras is still the main operator and the EIC provides a service to support the supply chain in getting registered with them. For more details please contact luanna.souza@the-eic.com On 27 April 2017, we held another Fundamentals of FPSOs workshop with a former Petrobras engineer as speaker. Attendees from operators and the supply chain gave very positive feedback. See the events calendar on page 14 for the next FPSO course in the Rio office. We were Amand a Duho n pleased to see SafeHouse, a supplier of technology-led engineered solutions for working safely in hazardous environments, and Process Vision, a manufacturer that aims to improve process safety with its gas/liquid separator monitoring systems, expand their presence in Houston as a result of using EICLaunchPad. We currently have three office suites available, as well as virtual and hot desk services. If you are interested in finding out more about EICLaunchPad, please contact natalia.bueno@the-eic.com The Houston team is working diligently to continue to add value to EIC membership by preparing a thoughtprovoking agenda for this year including EIC Connect Oil & Gas USA 2017, business presentations, regional showcases and corporate entertainment events. In April, we held our Topgolf event. This ‘tee time’ spent aiming at outfield targets as well as being a lot of fun was a great opportunity for networking and client entertainment. Attendees enjoyed beverages, a buffet and three hours of golf. Many thanks to our sponsors LoneStar Fasteners and Nylacast: their support helped to deliver a successful event and valuable networking opportunity. Last month the EIC hosted the UK National Pavilion at OTC for the 17th year. As always we made sure that there were lots of opportunities to network with key industry stakeholders during the course of the event.
