Opportunities for oil and gas diversification to offshore wind Amid the plummet of commodity prices and onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, more energy companies across the value chain are looking towards renewable energy development to generate new revenue, spread risk, reduce unit costs, and contribute to a healthier climate. Companies have progressed towards more sustainable energy business models since before the onset of the current environment; however, many view the collapse of commodity prices as an accelerant towards a cleaner energy mix.

The effects of the pandemic on renewable project development in the US have not precisely mirrored those in the oil and gas sector. Companies have announced new projects; existing projects have reached financial close; regulatory bodies have awarded project permits; and new lease grants for renewable project development have all occurred in the North and Central America region since the onset of the pandemic. In fact, the state of New York issued awards for 21 new renewable projects totalling 1.28GW. Other examples include LS Power’s plans for a new 1GW onshore wind farm in Idaho, Orgis Energy’s contract awards to develop solar facilities in Tennessee and Mississippi, and Pattern Energy’s receipt of regulatory approval to construct a 1GW onshore wind farm in New Mexico. Offshore wind projects in the US – such as Ørsted and Dominion Virginia Power’s Coastal Virginia offshore wind project and Equinor’s Empire offshore wind project – have advanced construction and contracting activity.

Offshore wind development – in particular – presents considerable diversification opportunities. Many products, services and expertise in managing complex offshore projects are highly transferable. Offshore wind is a relatively new industry in the US, and there is a wide acceptance that the implementation of cost savings strategies is necessary to advance the sector.

Operators and contractors have begun implementing technologies and best practices from other sectors to address this need. A study conducted by Scottish Enterprise and BVG Associates identifies six main supply chain elements. Of which, four include high value opportunities for diversification: development and project management; balance of plant; installation and commissioning; operation and maintenance and service. Decommissioning was also considered to present opportunities, though not amongst those with the greatest potential.

Major oil and gas operators and contractors have already successfully diversified into the renewables space. Ørsted – formerly DONG Energy (Danish Oil and Natural Gas) – is an example of a company that stemmed from the oil and gas industry; and is now one of the largest offshore wind developers globally. In 2018, Ørsted established an office in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as well as an innovation hub in Rhode Island just two years later. The company is currently developing eight offshore wind facilities in the US, with a total estimated CAPEX of over US$9bn as tracked by EICDataStream.

Equinor (formerly Statoil) has also diversified from oil and gas to develop offshore wind facilities. Recently, Equinor announced its plan to rapidly grow its renewables fleet and transform into a global offshore wind major. Equinor is currently planning ten wind facilities in US waters, with a total estimated CAPEX of over US$14.5bn. Other examples include major EPC contractors, such as Aker Solutions and Wood, which have both established renewable energy development divisions. Also noteworthy is EIC member FoundOcean – installation support services provider – which has worked on offshore wind farms since 2010 and now supports both industries on a 50:50 basis.

In the US, offshore wind development has been primarily focused in the northeast region, due largely to the geographical characteristics of the coast, and availability of shallow water beds suitable for fixed infrastructure development. However, the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) recently announced the results of two studies for renewable energy development in the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM). One study took into consideration the potential development of a variety of project types and determined offshore wind to have the highest overall technical resource potential of 508GW. The second study conducted an economic modelling and site-specific analyses and determined a 600MW project could feasibly create approximately 4,470 construction jobs and 150 permanent positions – alongside further economic benefits. As offshore oil and gas expertise is highly condensed in the Gulf of Mexico, the consideration of offshore wind development in the region positions the US for a significant increase in opportunities in the near future.

Over the next five years offshore wind could contribute an additional 20% to the energy mix.

LASER SCAN INFORMATION GATEWAY S3Di Ltd is an ISO accredited independent professional survey company providing specialist dimensional control/laser scanning survey services to the worldwide oil and gas industry, with offices in Aberdeen, UK and Houston, Texas.

S3Di has launched an enhanced service which will enable operators and EPC companies to maintain the upkeep of assets despite the travel restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Laser scan data capture has been used within the UK oil and gas sector and beyond for some years. Traditionally its use has been to serve detail engineering design studies on a form of adhoc, AFE to AFE basis. The scan data has been utilised by engineering/designers but unavailable to the wider disciplines within the organisation.

3Di’s offering is the creation of a laser scan information gateway, visual web-based portal per asset, accessible to everyone within the organisation and its supply chain vendors. It is centred on the compilation of legacy laser scan datasets of an asset into a manageable format accessible to both engineering departments and the wider business functions.

The visual web-based portal will be created through the amalgamation of previous laser scan surveys undertaken by third party vendors as part of individual works completed over the years. Where obvious ‘blind spots’ exist within the laser scan coverage then these could be ‘filled’ as part of a future gap analysis exercise.

The offering will enable amalgamation of numerous legacy laser scan surveys into a master laser scan point cloud dataset, for use by multi engineering, integrity and construction disciplines to develop packages of work and in effect allow desktop engineering against asbuilt data to become the accepted industry norm.

Sections and entire scan projects can be downloaded as 3D point clouds in various formats FARO, CPE, .E57, .XYZ, .RCP and .POD or high-resolution panoramic images to be used directly for seamless scan-toengineering design.

Member news Atmos International receives Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2020 Atmos International, a specialist pipeline leak detection and location technology company, has received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2020 for its Atmos Wave product.

Founded by Dr Jun Zhang in 1995, Atmos now applies its leak detection technologies to over 1,500 pipelines in more than 60 countries. Headquartered in Manchester, UK, it employs over 180 people globally. Its technology – Atmos Wave, which uses negative pressure wave leak detection methods, detects much smaller leaks and thefts and locates them more accurately than other systems on the market.

The award signifies a landmark in our 25th year.

FTV Proclad International has officially unveiled its £2m investment in stateof-the-art welding rigs as the company continues its growth plans to provide additional production capacity and create an additional 10 jobs.

The £2m investment in three new custom designed high-tech dual tungsten weld cladding rigs will double the capacity at the firm’s Glenrothes headquarters, while enabling the specialist engineering solutions provider to expand its capabilities and improve quality.

FTV Proclad International’s inhouse research and development team has been heavily involved in designing the specific dual tungsten heads used in the welding rigs, to ensure that they meet the rigorous specifications and quality standards the company is renowned for.

MAN Energy Solutions to provide dual-fuel engines in Japan

MAN Energy Solutions has been commissioned by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd (KHI) to supply two MAN 12V51/60 dual-fuel engines to a Japanese power plant, a first for the domestic power market. The engines are bound for the Miyako Island power plant, which is owned and operated by the Okinawa Electric Power Company (OEPC).

The dual-fuel engines will generate around 24MW of electrical power in its role as the primary base-load provider for the small Japanese island and its 50,000 inhabitants, improving efficiency as well as drastically reducing emissions.

Sonardyne completes pioneering seabedto-shore data delivery operation

Sonardyne International Ltd and XOCEAN have successfully completed a live seabed-to-shore data harvesting mission using an unmanned surface vessel (USV) for A/S Norske Shell, as part of a seabed monitoring campaign at the giant Ormen Lange field.

By using an XOCEAN XO-450 USV to harvest data from an array Sonardyne’s long-endurance Fetch pressure monitoring transponders, an estimated 5.4 tonnes of CO2 per day was prevented from being emitted into the atmosphere, had a manned vessel been used. XOCEAN’s USVs have a negligible carbon footprint – around one thousandth of the emissions of a conventional vessel – and all other emissions are offset, resulting in a fully carbon neutral operation.

The project, which saw the USV transit a total of 300km from Kristiansund out to the Ormen Lange field and back, over just three days, is also thought to be one of the largest data harvesting missions, using a USV, to date.

In addition, it proved the ability to support this type of operation remotely without anyone involved having to travel, safely meeting current COVID-19 movement restrictions. The vessel was ‘posted’ to Norway and then launched by local marine operations service provider, SafePath AS. All other team members, including Sonardyne’s remote operations specialists in the UK, XOCEAN’s USV pilots in Ireland and Shell’s geophysicists in Norway and the US, remained working from their home offices.

The Fetch PMTs accurately collect pressure, temperature and inclination data at the seafloor, at pre-programmed intervals. Using this data, any vertical displacement of the seabed can be calculated.

The data will help Norske Shell to proactively inform its reservoir management strategy.

Sonardyne’s long-life Fetch PMTs incorporate a high-speed acoustic modem, which allows stored data to be extracted at any time, wirelessly through the water, on demand.

On this mission, the XO-450 was equipped with a compatible Sonardyne acoustic transceiver attached beneath its hull.

EIC guest editorial Shifting the balance of power

Mr Tristan Chapman, Senior Vice President for Innovation & Clean Energy and Dr Mark Spring, Principal Engineer at Lloyd’s Register Analysis carried out by Imperial College London for the latest Drax Electric Insights report has shown that in the first three months of the year, wind farms collectively generated 30.5% of Britain’s electricity, 13% of this generated from offshore wind.

Over the next five years we believe offshore wind could contribute an additional 20% to the energy mix.

Britain is the world leader in offshore wind development, but if we are to maintain pole position, we must address some of the key barriers to growth and investment in the sector.

The pitfalls of planning

The UK government needs to send out a much stronger signal to industry that it is committed to supporting offshore wind and this has to start with the planning process.

The recent high-profile delays to Vattenfall’s planning consent for the Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas projects have undermined confidence in the process and could potentially discourage future investment.

Offshore wind power provides clean energy security and is a vital boost to the country’s low carbon economy, but these messages will be lost if we continue to see decisions about major infrastructure projects being deferred.

Dependable pipeline of floating wind farms

There is almost 30GW of offshore wind currently operating worldwide, mostly on bottom-fixed foundations, with floating wind generating only around 0.1% of the global total, so there is significant potential for growth. But the real challenge for floating wind is how quickly can installation costs be reduced and is the technology that we currently have the best?

To date, many diverse floating platform design concepts have been demonstrated at sea but the only floating offshore wind projects using multiple turbines are Fukushima FORWARD, Equinor’s 30MW Hywind Scotland and WindFloat Atlantic from EDPR and Principle Power. Having acquired French developer, Eolfi, Shell is supporting the Groix & Belle-Ile three-turbine pilot project off the coast of Brittany in France, which won’t be operational until 2022. Deployment of these new technologies needs to be expedited if floating wind is going to make a meaningful contribution to the energy transition and the high cost of development is to be addressed.

Differentiated tariffs for floating wind, grants for UK supply chain companies in the floating wind sector and grants for research and development for the most experienced technology houses would encourage investment in floating wind. If implemented in the UK, these would enable a major global role to be played, via exports of technology, sharing of insights and advising countries that will be reliant on floating wind for their transition to a zero-carbon economy. Countries with North Sea coastlines are under the spotlight, as the rest of the world seeks to learn the lessons that have led to the precipitous drop in prices of wind-generated electricity towards parity with fossil-fuels. UK companies have already been playing an important part in the start of such a global energy transition.

Storage solutions

UK demand for electricity plummeted during the COVID-19 lockdown. It’s likely that future increases in demand will be gradual but sustained and history suggests there is enough energy to supply our needs, when taking into account fluctuations of wind and sun.

However, storage of energy remains a key challenge and it is imperative that we develop efficient storage technologies that can be relied upon for more than a few hours, an implicit limitation of ultracapacitors or battery technology. Early grid-connected systems include pumped hydro and batteries, both of which have limitations regarding suitability and size. Lloyd’s Register (LR) has assisted in the development of the world’s largest battery bank and completed strategic reviews of the technical and commercial maturity of these technologies, but public policy has fallen behind, leaving a gulf to be navigated before they can offer grid stabilising and intermittency-mitigating benefits.

Energy integration

For offshore wind to reach scale and continue achieving cost reductions, integration with the wider energy equation needs to be considered. The growing imperative to decarbonise our whole economy may mean that future schemes have the potential to be used for much more than just providing electricity to our grid, for example, to generate blue hydrogen, capturing and storing the CO2 produced at source, or green hydrogen made from water using renewable energy, like Belgium’s Hyport Oostende project, the world’s first commercialscale green hydrogen plant to be powered solely by offshore wind energy, due onstream in 2022. At LR we are supporting clients in these areas where pilot projects are also planned.

While it is impossible to predict exactly what will happen in the future, we can clearly see that offshore wind is an evolving sector which is becoming increasingly complex and competitive as new entrants bid to secure their slice of this multi-billion-pound pie.

And if the UK gets it right, as the balance of power continues to shift from fossil fuels to renewables, not only will we be on track for a zero-carbon economy by 2050, but playing a key role in the global energy transition.

Diversity and inclusion in the energy sector – it’s good for business!

Dr Manisha Patel, Business Development Manager at MES and southern region committee member at the EIC shares how companies across the international energy supply chain can benefit from diverse and inclusive cultures and how working with people who are different to us is good for business.

Workplaces can be a powerful platform for making the world a better place. Diversity and inclusion have been on the agenda for many companies for a while now. We have come a long way over the years, but there is still work to be done to make workplaces adopt more equality where all professionals have equal opportunities to succeed. We can all play our part in increasing our self-awareness and managing our unconscious biases to close the equality gap and have a positive impact on the energy supply chain and sector.

Diversity

Diversity in the workplace is where our companies reflect the communities we serve. It includes gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexuality, language, education, background and so on. A study by McKinsey showed that organisations with more gender diversity are 21% more likely to outperform others while those that are ethnically diverse outperform others by 33%.

Figure 1 presents just some of the benefits of diversity in the workplace.

Inclusion

Inclusion is when every single person in the community is valued, heard, respected, empowered and feels a sense of belonging. It goes beyond tolerance to actually celebrating and elevating each person. In order for a diverse workforce to have an impact, their voices need to be heard and therefore, inclusion is an integral part which goes hand in hand with diversity. It is reported that companies with more inclusive cultures are more likely to strengthen customer loyalty and enhance employee engagement and productivity. Some statistics on the benefits of inclusion in the workplace reported in Salesforce report, ‘The Impact of Equality and Values Driven Business’ are shown in Figure 2.

Professional development

Each one of us, as a colleague, manager, mentor, coach, sponsor etc has the opportunity to support at least one other person with their professional development throughout our careers. Therefore, for those professionals to get most value from our input, it’s in our best interest to raise our personal game first. Here are some suggestions and reminders for professional development: • Surround yourself with a strong support network of mentors, coaches, sponsors, allies, champions.

• Attend networking events.

• Join and become a volunteer at professional associations such as the Energy Institute.

• Build your personal brand.

• Increase your digitally fluency – don’t be afraid to be seen.

• Work on your self-awareness, unconscious biases, emotional and social intelligence.

• Focus your energy on things within your control. There is often more than one way of meeting the same goal.

• Do your homework and keep an eye open for the next development opportunity.

Diversity and inclusion are not tick-box exercises, having more diverse and inclusive cultures across the sector is the right and smart thing to do.

Please remember that no one person is the same, we all have unique mindsets, behaviours, value propositions, but we all also have our unique unconscious biases.

Kindness, understanding and respect for other people’s map of the world is a must across the supply chain and if we all start with these, we can all start to enjoy the benefits of a more peaceful and happier society.

Virtual Meet the Buyer one-to-one sessions

The overseas events team hosted its first ever Meet the Buyer virtual one-to-one sessions at the end of May. These meetings, Camilla Tew which normally take place on UK pavilions during overseas exhibitions, represent a great opportunity for exhibitors to present their services and products to buyers attending the show.

However, given that current times are anything but normal, the EIC decided to try and find new ways to promote business opportunities to its members and exhibitors.

After the cancellation of OTC 2020, due to the current pandemic, the overseas events team saw a networking gap which needed to be filled.

Through a virtual meeting platform, the team was able to organise private and quick meetings between relevant US buyers and UK pavilion exhibitors. Buyers and exhibitors, who received the initiative with great enthusiasm, were able to meet each other virtually and talk about their needs and future business opportunities.

I would like to start by saying congratulations to our colleague Caitlin Henderson, UK Events Co-ordinator for receiving EIC’s Worthy Award, virtually presented Jo Cam pbell

by CEO Stuart Broadley.

Caitlin has been with the EIC for nearly two years, joining as a graduate from university.

She continues to go above and beyond supporting the UK events team, the wider EIC and all of our members.

We were delighted to finish June on a high, having hosted five LIVE e-vents which included Global Offshore Wind – Regional Opportunities amidst Global Expansion, Opportunities in Nuclear New Tech, Hydrogen and CCUS reality, Open Forum – UK Energy Transition Project Spotlight and finishing the month with a Focus on Latest Technologies. We worked with a variety of speakers including some of our member companies Mott MacDonald and Booth Welsh, and had our first virtual exhibitor SeaRoc Group. June also saw the highest rate of attendance with over 600 registering for our webinars.

The EIC and World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO) are launching a series of global offshore wind e-vents after hosting a very successful webinar on 10 June – Regional Opportunities amidst Global Expansion. The global offshore wind project pipeline shows no sign of slowing down, despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 situation.

While some activities have been delayed and halted, the majority of project work has continued to be carried out across the regions. Hydrogen a priority in the renewable landscape

Towards the end of May the European Commission put forward its revamped long-term EU budget.

In the economic recovery plan the European Green Deal is an imperative component. A standout takeaway from the announcement was the importance given to clean hydrogen, and the wellneeded attention was highly acclaimed across the industry. Officials established the technology as key to unlocking complete decarbonisation.

Future investments and the new Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Alliance initiative will allow for the rapid upscaling of its use and production, and will kickstart the hydrogen economy. With the continuous activity seen and Europe now putting its full weight behind renewable hydrogen, anticipation is brewing for the sector’s future.

Middle East news Regional update

At the time of writing the region is slowly starting to come out of the current lockdown measures with Dubai government workers having returned to their offices in Ryan M cPhers on a phased approach and the mosques in KSA opening for the first time in over two months. We all remain vigilant during this time and hope that this is the start of a return to what was previously considered ‘normal practice’, although I suspect that the last few months have reshaped the landscape and we will evolve into a ‘new normal’.

We continue to develop our weekly series of webinars providing a transparent overview of what is happening across the region through our market updates. This has included additional topics such as the Causation of Disputes in a Low Oil Price Market alongside EIC member companies HKA and Addleshaw Goddard; and an overview of the Middle East Renewables Market which resulted in a record attendance illustrating the importance of this growing market.

With the ongoing transition to a virtual platform I am delighted to announce that we will deliver our KSA Connect event via this medium. Plans are underway to hold this event in the final quarter of 2020 with more information available in the coming weeks. We look forward to welcoming as many of you along as possible where you will be able to engage from the comfort of your own home/office.

From a macro perspective movement in the region has seen Saudi Arabia pledge to deepen its production restrictions by a million barrels per day, bringing its output to the lowest in 18 years. Saudi Arabia’s total production cut would average 4.8m bpd, bringing its total output for June to 7.492m bpd. Kuwait also announced it was slashing an additional 80,000 bpd, with UAE energy minister Suhail Al Mazrouei announcing plans to cut an additional 100,000 bpd.

ADNOC issues joint tender to develop subsea power transmission network

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) has issued a joint tender with Abu Dhabi Power Corp (ADPower) to develop a high-voltage, direct current subsea power transmission network, linking ADNOC’s offshore production facilities to ADPower’s onshore electricity grid. A special purpose vehicle 30% owned

by ADNOC, ADPower (30%) and a select group of developers and investors (40%) will fund the capital project, the first project of its kind in the MENA region.

Chinese Silk Road Fund acquires 49% stake in Saudi renewables firm China’s state investment fund Silk Road Fund has completed an acquisition of a 49% stake in Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power Renewable Energy Holding.

The holding company is the renewable energy arm of Saudi power generation and water desalination company ACWA Power. It currently operates 1,668MW of clean power projects in the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco.

Asia Pacific news Regional update

We are happy to report that there are positive signs that the COVID-19 pandemic is reducing its dangerous spread across the Asia Azman Pacific region as the Nasir number of positive cases continues to decrease while the number of recoveries increases. More and more countries in Asia are lifting city lockdowns and allowing economic operations and daily lives to proceed as normal. Some restrictions are still in place for large gatherings and travel between countries, which means events and exhibitions are yet to be allowed to resume. Within the Asia region, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia are regarded as having done well in containing the spread of the virus.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak globally, we took the decision to postpone EIC Connect Indonesia to a new date in September 2020. This means we are going to have to move the scheduled EIC Connect Malaysia to November 2020 and EIC Connect Vietnam to March 2021.

We will still try to organise these three Connect events if the situation allows. Obviously with so much uncertainty at the moment, we will keep everyone updated.

In lieu of the normal physical events that we organise for members on a monthly basis, we have been organising weekly webinars free of charge to members starting from mid-April via our video-conferencing platform. Two EICDataStream workshops were held in a month to give specific training to members on certain features of the database. We have also held webinars on Waste-toEnergy, Carbon Capture and Storage, Hydrogen and Wind Energy. Please look out for further announcements via emails or the EIC website.

Upcoming webinars that are being planned by EIC Asia Pacific include a business presentation with Petronas followed by another webinar by Malaysian-based EIC member Serba Dinamik and UK-based IT company Aveva on the topic of digitalisation in energy. We have also planned an engagement session with international EPCs like Worley, Bechtel, Petrofac and McDermott which is scheduled for July 2020 followed by a series of country-focused webinars on the latest updates for energy projects in Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei, South Korea and Taiwan which will run from July 2020 to September 2020.

Air Products to invest in coal-to-methanol plant

Air Products has signed a definitive agreement for a long-term onsite contract for a proposed coalto-methanol production plant in Bengalon, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. PT Bakrie Capital Indonesia and PT Ithaca Resources will supply the coal feedstock and both parties have already signed an offtake agreement on methanol production for sale within Indonesia. Air Products will invest about USS$2bn to build, own and operate the air separation, gasification, syngas clean-up, utilities and methanol production facility which will produce 2mtpa of methanol from almost 6mtpa of coal.

South Korea to double renewables energy target

South Korea could ramp up its shift toward renewable power, and away from coal and nuclear, under a proposal by a government working group tasked with helping shape its energy future. The government is aiming to raise the share of renewables to 20%. The submitted proposal is aiming for renewable sources to account for 40% of the nation’s power by 2034.

The current plan targets 20% by 2030. Governments and financial institutions are under pressure to move away from carbon-emitting fossil fuels as warnings over the pace of global warming grow more dire.

We hope this month’s Inside Energy finds our members safe and well. Indeed, we are in some challenging times amidst much uncertainty.

However, I must say, the Houston team has never Amand a Duho n been busier! We continue to see projects in the region delayed – not cancelled, new oil discoveries in the US and Gulf of Mexico, a push towards renewables across the region, and business life in general moving faster than ever.

These are positive signs, and the EIC is continuing to deliver important business intelligence, EIC LIVE e-vents, and bespoke services through EIC Inform.

In May we launched the Upstream Mexico business workshop series. We were delighted to welcome back XWELLS’ General Manager, Thibaud Cadieu to take forward the workshops with a series of presentations around understanding the new energy business environment in Mexico. Module Four gave an excellent update on the current state of Pemex and its business plan. We were delighted to hear from delegates that they are pushing forward with strategic partnerships as a means to enter the market.

In addition, on 15 May, Monique Aceves, Business Development Manager for EIC Houston hosted our Fortnightly Coffee Break with guest speakers Neil Golding, Director, Market Intelligence with the EIC and John Young, independent adviser and avid EIC benefits user. Neil provided a global market update, while John provided a detailed overview of building a business strategy through EICDataStream with case studies.

Later, we were honoured to host a Regional Open Day with deugro Group attended by both EIC members and non-members. EIC staff provided a high-level market update, and demos of EICDataStream, EICAssetMap and EICSupplyMap. Karen Breaux-Clarke, Corporate Vice President, Sales & Business Development, Oil & Gas, and John Ziomek, Business Development Representative, Project Logistics with deugro Group provided an overview of the organisation and insight into the value and how they take advantage of their EIC membership benefits.

June was an exciting month, as we hosted our first event around carbon, capture, utilisation and storage, and further EIC Houston team coffee breaks; with more event announcements forthcoming. In order to maintain the same level of excellence amid COVID-19, the EIC has strived to deliver insightful and valuable EIC LIVE e-vents. In May, we held a high quality webinar gathering over 100 attendees. Opportunities with SBM Offshore Brazil presented by Andre Surkamp, Project Specialist and Bruno Freitas Business Acquisition Director. They covered an overview of SBM Offshore in Brazil, with seven FPSO’s, gave information on how suppliers can connect with them and shared an interesting market perspective showing the relevance of Brazil which will remain the main FPSO market worldwide.

Argentina fixes oil barrel price to shield local market

The government of Argentina, after negotiations with provinces, oil producers and refining players, has introduced a US$45 barrel price for oil produced locally. The measure is initially valid until the end of December 2020 or if international oil prices exceed US$45 for 10 consecutive days. The decision also calls for oil producers to maintain 2019 production levels. The artificial price is meant to protect activity in Argentina’s resource-rich Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas play from the current downturn in oil prices.

Colombia to offer E&P blocks Despite the downturn in oil prices, Colombia’s National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) will accept bids in October 2020 for 39 exploration blocks, of which five are located offshore.

Later in May, Trident’s Supply Chain and Logistics Manager, Olivier Jahan presented on Opportunities with Trident Energy Brazil.

This young operator is taking over the Pampo and Enchova fields acquired from Petrobras last year, which group 10 concessions in shallow and deep water together with the existing production facilities, which includes 4 oil platforms (2 fixed and 2 semisubmersible). With a huge challenge in hand, Trident is prepared with a team full of expertise to unlock the value of mid-life oil and gas assets. They presented an overview of the operation which they plan to take over this summer. Opportunities for the supply chain are plenty particularly for those who can apply new ideas and technology to support their strict focus on both production and operational efficiencies.

The country is keen on reversing a decrease in oil production since 2013.

Petrobras won’t invest in renewables in the short term

Brazil’s national oil company has reaffirmed its decision not to invest in renewables in the short-term. According to the company’s CEO Roberto Castello Branco, Petrobras’s involvement in the renewables segment will be limited to research. The company has pledged, however, to reduce emissions in the oil extraction process. Petrobras recently cancelled a 5MW offshore wind pilot project in Brazil’s Northeast region.

Example of EIC Inform service delivery ABC Valves is a manufacturer and supply company to major projects and applications in the UK oil and gas industry.

Its products meet complex specifications for end users such as BP, Shell, Equinor and ExxonMobil, among others.

The company has been active in the UK and Middle East region for over 50 years with much success. However, its attempts to infiltrate the US market have proved difficult. The company undertook several, expensive, market visits to find they were not meeting with the right contacts, never would receive a response from follow-up emails or calls; or could not get an appointment at all.

The MD took forward 40 hours of EIC Inform which provided the following: • A detailed conversation with EIC staff (analyst and regional director) to understand the company’s offering and an understanding of efforts taken thus far to entering the US market.

• The EIC undertook extensive EICDataStream research in identifying specific project opportunities over a two five-year period, and identified specific contacts consisting of category management with operators, and front-end engineering and procurement for specific EPCs known to be potentially bidding on specific projects.

• The EIC then undertook outreach to over 40 contacts in the USA with operators and contractors, introducing ABC Valves, its specific product offering and how it could solve problems for operators and EPCs. This outreach also ascertained interest in meeting with ABC Valves during a planned visit to Houston for OTC. • The EIC received interest from eight companies to meet with ABC Valves, and eight inquires for further information.

The EIC confirmed eight meetings developing a visit programme for ABC Valves and put ABC Valves in direct contact with all 16 companies.

• The project took the EIC about 60 hours to complete over a course of six weeks. Feedback from the client was excellent, and they have commissioned a second EIC Inform service for Mexico.

• Within one year, the company had received several orders and opened a virtual office with the EIC in Houston.

Costs of EIC Inform As an informative service exclusive to EIC members, EIC Inform offers competitive rates at just £50 per hour.

Services are not one-size-fits-all, as regional resource, complexities of market, and competition all play a part in the offering and value presented to members. Therefore, EIC Inform may not be a fit for all members, and time spent may require less or more time depending on the project.
