Sector analysis Outlook for global offshore wind The global offshore wind sector witnessed significant activity in 2018, continuing its rapid expansion. Global installed capacity reached approximately 18GW and estimates suggest 4.7GW in capacity additions in 2019.

The UK continues to lead the market in operational projects, with approximately 8GW online. It is followed

by Germany with 6.4GW and China with 3.6GW in operational assets.

The UK and Europe leading the way As a region, Europe is still the global offshore wind leader, with approximately 16GW worth of projects operational and 3.2GW under construction. However, 2018 witnessed considerable activity in overseas markets as well, with both Taiwan and the US making headlines. Taiwan is expected to reach its target of 5.5GW by 2025 and the US will see development of up to 6GW between 2021 and 2027. Developments in these markets are expected to pick up in the early 2020s as the first large-scale projects are implemented, with opportunities for local supply chain development as well as exports by established European suppliers. By 2030, offshore wind is estimated to reach an installed capacity of more than 115GW globally, with the International Energy Agency seeing up to 200GW of developments by 2040.

Technological developments driving growth The sector’s growth continues to be driven by individual governments’ policy commitments, technological innovation and improvements, and ongoing cost reductions throughout the supply chain. GE Renewable Energy announced production timelines for its 12MW Haliade X turbine in March 2018, while MHI Vestas continues to upgrade its V164 model with the launch of a 10MW unit in September 2018. Adapting to these technological developments has been a key topic of discussion for the supply chain, as installation contractors and ports consider upgrading their capacities and infrastructure.

Floating offshore wind Floating offshore wind (FOW) has caught the attention of developers as well as contractors in the oil and gas sector looking to diversify into the industry. While still at a nascent stage, a project pipeline is gaining visibility and the technology is maturing. Equinor is planning to establish an 88MW floating wind farm to power its Snorre and Gullfaks platforms by 2021. In the US, the developers of the 150MW Humboldt FOW project off the coast of California reached a milestone in submitting a lease application to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in September 2018.

Supply chain opportunities The offshore wind supply chain has seen significant development on the back of steady capacity growth and project pipelines. Clusters and hubs are increasingly becoming visible across the UK and continental Europe alongside offshore wind development zones. Developers continue to stress the importance of innovation, technological improvements and cost reductions, with contractors now facing a highly competitive environment.

Cable suppliers and installation contractors are preparing for additional demand from the growing pipeline, as well as closely following developments and requirements in the FOW sector. Array and export cable markets are estimated to reach a value of £13.6bn by 2028 if current global project pipelines are realised. The UK will represent the largest market, valued at £3.64bn, seeing a total 9,300km worth of cable installed, followed by China with 6,550km of cables and Germany with 4,400km.

O&G diversification The offshore wind industry offers significant opportunity for oil and gas contractors to diversify across the value chain. Similarities exist in project development activities such as geotechnical investigations, as well as in offshore operations such as substation installation and cable laying. Major Tier 1 contractors such as Van Oord and GeoSea have shifted to include offshore wind operations in their portfolio and benefit from the strong project pipeline. Offshore wind does not just represent a way of continuing operations during low oil and gas prices and activities, but a long-term business development strategy.

While the supply chain continues to mature and move towards standardisation and consolidation, it is not too late for companies to enter the market.

This month the EIC is going to Mexico. And you should be there with us! It’s still not too late to join our overseas delegation to Mexico on 18 February (see page 14 for an insight into what goes on during an EIC overseas delegation) and the EIC Connect Mexico Energy Forum on 19 February.

Since the North American country’s historic energy reform in 2013 broke Pemex’s monopoly on Mexico’s oil and gas industry, opening it to foreign investment, international oil companies and contractors have been queuing to enter the market.

The first auctions of oil and gas blocks have proven popular with a high number of bidders taking part. Already bearing fruit, most notably the Zama discovery – described as one of the largest shallow water finds in the past two decades – by a consortium of Mexico’s Sierra Oil & Gas, the US’ Talos Energy and the UK’s Premier Oil, newly-elected President López Obrador has committed to continuing the tender process, with around 500 more blocks up for grabs over the next five years.

Waste gas is a major contributor to CO2 emissions.

What work is Aggreko doing in this area?

We’ve been helping a number of O&G operators harness waste gas for power generation, helping them to monetise their gas, provide usable energy and reduce emissions. Not all waste gas can be captured, but the gas that can ticks a number of boxes: it can be used onsite to power production facilities; it can also provide additional revenue with the possibility of selling the excess to the national grid; and it helps reduce overall emissions. If it were possible to capture and use the current level of globally flared gas for power generation, it could provide more electricity than Africa’s current total annual consumption.

Can you tell us about your work on landfill gas?

A

Aggreko has engineered energy solutions which can be powered by many different types of niche gases, including biogas produced by landfill waste.

In Argentina, the largest domestic waste collection company serves around 10 million people, who create between 1,000 and 1,200 tonnes of waste every month.

They needed 4.5MW of additional power to meet their growing demand using the gas derived from household waste. We engineered and deployed a solution in less than a month, which overcame the challenges presented by using this type of uncontrolled biogas, drawing on our Next Generation Gas equipment.

Aggreko has moved into offshore wind. What were the drivers and challenges?

The energy market is evolving at a rapid rate, driven by several factors, one of which is decarbonisation. We see our role as pivotal in supporting this transition, providing an energy supply that can always be relied on.

Getting temporary power to an offshore wind farm is no easy task – the solution needs to be bespoke and flexible. In the North Sea, our client needed heaters and dehumidifiers to protect the electrical components in the turbines. Aggreko’s temporary power package enabled the commissioning phase of the wind farm to go ahead without a hitch.

It isn’t a secret that renewables cannot continuously power the grid. If the wind doesn’t blow, energy can’t be generated by a turbine. Battery solutions are needed to store energy during times of over-supply to help integrate wind power into the grid. Our microgrid and storage solutions team create solutions to meet the most complex needs and support businesses to incorporate renewable energy into their power supply. Our thermal solar hybrid power plants combine renewables with thermal power generation and battery storage to offer flexible, reliable power at a lower cost and integrate renewables into mainstream energy markets.

What’s next for Aggreko?

2019 will see us launch two new products. In partnership with Cummins, we’ve re-engineered our current Cummins engine within our Diesel portfolio. This will deliver a further 1.6% fuel efficiency, totalling more than 6% improvement to the standard Cummins G3 model. Our new Next Generation Gas model, the 420E, will deliver a 1.2% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the model we currently offer. This positions us as market leaders in fuel efficiency, achieving 44.1%. As well as the significant cost advantage for our customers, it also plays a role in helping to achieve sustainability objectives by using less fuel.

The project is expected to be completed within five years.

Operator: BP Value: US$1.3bn BP has approved the phase III expansion of Atlantis. The project, which is due to be completed in 2020, will exploit an additional 400MMbbl of oil. TechnipFMC has been awarded an integrated EPCI contract for subsea equipment.

Operator: Matelec Group Value: US$150m Construction of a 130MW heavy fuel oil power plant in Mbour. Plans are in place to convert the facility to a gas-fired plant when sources are available. Wärtsilä has been chosen as the lead contractor and engine supplier.

Elfab is first rupture disc company outside the US to achieve ASME certification

Elfab has enhanced its in-house testing capabilities with the new American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) certified Flow Lab. It is the first rupture disc company outside the US to gain this certification.

The Flow Lab is a test rig developed and assembled by Elfab’s engineering team. ASME certification authorises Elfab to apply a UD stamp to a wide range of rupture discs. The UD stamp is a legal requirement for many pressure relief products sold to the US and other geographical regions worldwide.

The Flow Lab enables Elfab to establish a rupture disc’s resistance to flow and its minimum net flow area. This data is used by pipeline and process engineering designers, and the new facility will see Elfab certifying products to both ASME and the European ISO4126-6 standards.

Offshore wind continues to blow FoundOcean in the right direction For the third successive year, offshore wind has helped to keep FoundOcean moving in a positive direction.

Ever since the Scottish-based company was founded back in 1966, it has maintained a strong global presence in offshore oil and gas, and although the recent downturn did impact on the business, the effects of the downturn were largely mitigated by the company’s activities in offshore wind. Since 2015, the company has taken part in nearly 20 offshore wind projects.

As for many offshore service companies, offshore wind has buffered the company from the full effects of the oil and gas downturn.

As Jim Bell, CEO of FoundOcean, points out, ‘With European wind projects forging ahead with renewed confidence, and with a rapidly developing South East Asian market, we are now having to rethink our business, particularly as we are also aware of a noticeable pick up in other sectors. We’re very excited about these emerging opportunities, and planning for growth is a much more welcome activity than the opposite.’

The company’s flexibility and can-do attitude is one of its key strengths, and along with its large fleet of equipment, allows the company to readily adapt to its clients’ requirements.

Petrofac wins £7.9m Ithaca contract Leading oil and gas service provider Petrofac has been awarded a £7.9m construction and commissioning contract by Ithaca Energy.

Fabricom currently employs over 100 personnel from its offices in Aberdeen and Newcastle upon Tyne, providing fully integrated EPC services to the energy industry.

The company provides specialist services ranging from concept development and brownfield modifications through to late life extensions and decommissioning.

The Ithaca-operated FPF-1 floating production facility

Petrofac will be responsible for the topsides construction and commissioning works that are to be undertaken on the Ithaca-operated FPF-1 floating production facility, for the tieback of the BP-operated Vorlich field subsea development in the Central North Sea. As duty holder of the FPF-1 asset Petrofac will fully integrate its operations and construction teams in support of the construction work scope, which is due to commence this month and complete in 2020.

Successful management buy-out of Servelec Controls Servelec Controls, one of the UK’s leading systems integrators, is pleased to confirm a successful management buy-out led by Managing Director Andrew Mills and backed by private equity firm Alcuin Capital Partners.

Sonardyne launches new era in acoustic and inertial operations A new platform bringing a reduction in complexity and overheads for offshore operations has been launched by leading underwater positioning and navigation specialist Sonardyne International Ltd. Available now, Sonardyne’s Fusion 2 long baseline (LBL) and inertial navigation system (INS) software offers marine survey contractors and offshore construction companies a single solution from which they can undertake field development projects faster and easier than ever.

Spotlight on technology Crondall Energy

PROBE (PROBALISTIC BUCKLING EVALUATION) Crondall Energy is a leading independent oil and gas consultancy providing strategic, commercial and technical services for offshore oil and gas projects that use floating production and subsea technologies.

The company works with a range of project stakeholders, including oil companies, investors and law firms. It helps its clients to manage technical, commercial and strategic risks and achieve positive project outcomes.

Pipeline challenges

A major design challenge for deepwater pipelines, is lateral buckling due to the high axial compressive force developed under operating conditions. Buckle locations are very difficult to predict, being dependent upon a number of uncertainties (such as pipe-soil interaction and inherent out-of-straightness). Current design methods make conservative assumptions to produce a safe design, often resulting in mitigation measures that cost millions of dollars. These mitigation measures may not be sufficient or may not be necessary.

Managing design uncertainties Crondall Energy has been involved in pipeline design for many years and realised that the only way to manage the design uncertainty is within a probabilistic framework. It developed the PROBE computer programme to perform a full structural reliability analysis, using Monte Carlo simulation of a pipeline undergoing lateral buckling. The lateral buckling response of the pipeline is simulated many millions of times using different, randomly selected, values of the uncertain variables. By counting the number of simulations that lead to an unacceptable condition (for example local buckling of the pipe wall or girth weld fracture) the overall probability of failure can be calculated.

PROBE has been used on many international projects to show that mitigation, based on traditional design approaches, can often be eliminated.

Overseas events It’s all about delegations

The last few months have seen the EIC Overseas Events team running some very successful trade delegations. In September we took a group of eight companies to Mozambique and South Africa where delegates enjoyed meeting key operators, EPCs and local partners, including Chevron, Shell, TechnipFMC, SASOL, Anadarko, the CCS JV and many more. November saw us take nine delegates to Uganda and Kenya led by Lord Popat, where we met with Total, CNOOC, GE, Mott MacDonald, Tullow Oil and National Oil of Kenya among others.

2019 is off to a busy start for the team with Pamela Nicholson taking 11 delegates on a trade delegation to Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana, where they enjoyed insightful meetings with BP, Shell, Massy Wood, TechnipFMC, WorleyParsons, SBM, Atlantic LNG and more.

UK and Europe news Regional update

I’d like to start by wishing you all a belated happy New Year.

2019 has been an exciting time so far for us at the EIC, with a few internal structural changes coming into effect Johan na Cam pbell that will further enhance our event’s calendar and the membership experience for you all.

As this is my first regional update let me take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was previously the Business Lead and Events Manager for Scotland, based in the EIC’s Aberdeen office and have recently been appointed as Head of UK and Europe, taking over the role from Terri Sylvester who has now been appointed as Head of Training and Administration within the business.

As a part of my new role I will be relocating to EIC’s London headquarters and will be responsible for all events across the whole of the UK. We’re also aiming to expand an exciting events programme throughout mainland Europe.

Looking ahead, the UK Events team will be working hard to increase its current events programme in every region, committed to continuing to create valuable business opportunities for the global energy supply chain.

On 17 January, we held a sold-out business presentation from WorleyParsons in Aberdeen with its senior management team delivering an informative presentation before hosting over 50 one-to-ones with attendees.

Following on from the success of our summer networking event, the EIC bought people together from across the industry for our New Year Networking Evening on 23 January in London. This event provided attendees with a chance to entertain clients, socialise with other suppliers and make new connections.

We also held a really interesting panel session in Aberdeen on the 25 January. It included representatives from CNNOC International (formerly Nexen), Aker Solutions, Apollo, industry regulator the OGA and supply chain consultant Robin Critchard, who discussed the ever-changing supply chain landscape. Topics included what contingency plans to make for Brexit, what the supply chain needs from government and likewise what the OGA is looking for from industry to make its Vision 2035 a reality.

Interconnection projects across Europe progressing

Developers of power interconnectors in continental Europe and the UK have announced progress in recent months. SSE commissioned its 100mile Caithness-Moray subsea interconnector in early January 2019, following National Grid/ ScottishPower’s completion of the Western Link HVDC subsea line between Scotland and England and Wales in October 2018. National Grid and Energinet reached a project milestone for the 1.4GW Viking Link in signing a joint operations agreement in January 2019. In the same month, Nexans completed the installation and testing of the 500kV HVDC subsea link for the MON.ITA interconnection between Montenegro and Italy. Finally, Poland and Lithuania announced the construction of a new subsea transmission line, called the Harmony Link, to be commissioned by 2025.

Middle East news Regional update

So this is it then, the final farewell, my very last newsletter. After a 15-year journey, it is time to pass the baton over to the next generation, with Ryan Terry W illis McPherson agreeing to manage the EIC’s Dubai office.

During this month, we will be doing our best to introduce Ryan to the local membership with our annual golf tournament taking place on the 21st being my final swan song. After forty plus delegations introducing both members and non-members to new markets, local events in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi being too numerous to count, plus at least 10 ADIPECs, none of these would have been possible without the strong support of both the London and Dubai teams, for which sincere thanks are due.

Siemens to build most efficient power plant in UAE

February will start with my final trade delegation to Nigeria. This is a first for both the EIC and Ryan. With a full programme of meetings, it will give the delegates an opportunity to assess potential business leads as well as engage with local businesses, something which is essential given the very well-established Nigerian local content legislation that needs to be adhered to.

Later in the month, we will be returning to the Egypt Petroleum Show with a slightly expanded UK presence which is not surprising, given the current high level of opportunities in both the hydrocarbon and renewables sectors.

German engineering giant Siemens will build what it claims will be the most efficient power plant in the UAE. The 600MW combined cycle gas-fired power plant will be located in Jebel Ali, Dubai, at an industrial facility owned by Emirates Global Aluminium. It will be the first time that Siemens’ H-class gas turbine will be deployed in the Gulf and is expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions from the facility by around 10% and cut NOx emissions by approximately 58%.

Asia Pacific news Regional update

EIC Asia Pacific visited Brunei at the end of January to attend a networking event with the British High Commission in the capital Azman Bandar Seri Begawan. We Nasir met with the British High Commissioner to Brunei, Richard Lindsay, to discuss future EIC activities in Brunei. In the evening we attended a networking reception hosted by the British High Commission and attended by business players in the country which included Brunei Shell, Petroleum Brunei, Sapura Brunei, Wood Group, ExxonMobil and senior officials from Brunei’s Ministry of Energy.

Towards the end of this month we’ll attend the Japan Wind Expo in Tokyo, the largest exhibition and conference for wind energy in East Asia. The event showcases products like wind turbines, wind power generation systems and the like. We’ll be there to evaluate the viability of having a UK pavilion at this exhibition in the future.

In April (date tbc) we’ll hold a business presentation by Sapura Energy, led by Projects Director Mr Anwar Ali. He’ll be talking through the groups’ project pipeline, while members of Sapura’s procurement team will also be on hand to answer any questions about how to register and work with Sapura.

Future business presentations in our Kuala Lumpur office will involve speakers from companies such as PETRONAS subsidiary EPOMS, TechnipFMC, TNB and Wood. Watch this space for more details.

PTTEP unveils US$16bn 5-year investment plan

Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) has released its five-year investment plan (2019-23) worth a combined US$16.1bn to support its business expansion both domestically and overseas. For 2019, the company has set aside US$3.25bn for PTTEP and its subsidiaries, US$1.84bn of which will be capital expenditure and the remaining US$1.41bn operating expenditure. The company also targets average petroleum sales volume at 318,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

South Korea presses on with Shwe gas field

South Korea’s Posco Daewoo is preparing to launch work on the third phase of development at its Shwe gas field off Myanmar. This will involve the fabrication and installation of the low-pressure compression platform that will be linked to the existing Shwe offshore drilling, production and processing platform. A tender is expected to follow, with bid submissions likely in early 2019. Contract award is scheduled for the end of 2019, with fabrication to start in 2021 and commissioning in 2025.

On 29 January we worked with the Canadian Consulate General in Dallas to provide the Regional Showcase: Opportunities in the Oil and Gas Sector in Canada event. Mexico’s fourth long-term power auction postponed

Following the inauguration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico’s fourth long-term power auction has been further postponed. Bids previously due on 4 December 2018 will now be due on 28 February 2019.

The National Energy Control Center (CENACE) cited the delay is due to changes in staff at the Secretariat of Energy (Sener), state power utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) and CENACE itself.

Record-breaking offshore wind auction results

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has announced the results of a wind lease auction offshore Massachusetts. Winning bids for three offshore wind lease areas totalled US$405m, more than US$1,000 per acre. The lease areas have a combined potential for 4.1GW of commercial wind power development.

Petrobras releases 2019-23 business plan

The Brazilian major plans to invest US$84.1bn in the next four years, according to its 2019-23 business and management plan released in December 2018. The E&P segment is slated to receive US$68.8bn in the period, with a strong focus on the development of presalt reserves. A total of 13 new production units will start operations by 2023 in the Santos, Campos and Sergipe-Alagoas basins. Petrobras also plans to invest US$8.2bn in the refining sector, US$5bn in natural gas infrastructure and US$300m in petrochemicals.

The Brazilian national oil company has also allocated US$400m to wind, solar and biofuels projects. A highlight is the development of a pilot 5MW offshore wind turbine in north-eastern Brazil.

YPF to invest up to US$5bn per year by 2023

The Argentine national oil company has also released investment plans for the next four years. Its annual CAPEX target for 2019-23 will range between US$4-US$5bn, of which 75% will be directed to the E&P segment. YPF will invest heavily in unconventionals, which will receive around 70% of the company’s upstream expenditure. Shale deposits in the Vaca Muerta formation have transformed Argentina’s energy outlook, allowing the country to increase gas production and resume gas exports to Chile.
