Sector analysis

Middle East crisis highlights need for diversification: technology, energy and regional dynamics

The threats posed by maritime chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz to global trade, especially in the energy sector, are widely acknowledged among the market. Even so, roughly 25% of the world's seaborne oil trade and 20% of global LNG exports passed through the strait before the US-Israel military operation against Iran, meaning it was one of the busiest energy shipping channels in the world. The conflict served as a reminder to governments and businesses how dependency can represent a significant threat to energy security and the global economy, prompting an urgent push to reduce reliance through diversification.

In a landscape where geopolitical risks are redrawing trade flows, the growing appeal for countries outside traditional chokepoints places the Americas region in a distinctly advantageous position for buyers and investors. So far, the massive supply disruption has been offset somewhat by higher production and oil trade volumes from the Atlantic region, especially Brazil, Guyana and the US. OPEC data shows that war disruptions cut US oil imports, but American crude exports told a different story hitting a record 5.3m b/d in April as producers shifted seaborne volumes toward Asia's most exposed buyers, particularly Japan and South Korea.

Although US shale exports are set to keep growing, markets down south are rising as potential forces in the global energy mix. Lasting impacts from the Strait of Hormuz closure are set to remain in the longer term and the consequent drive for diversification opens a clear window for South America, with Brazil, Argentina, Guyana, Suriname and potentially Venezuela well placed to emerge, to varying degrees, as reliable suppliers insulated from geopolitical conflict.

As energy security becomes the most prominent element of the energy trilemma (alongside environmental sustainability and affordability), Brazil's deepwater reserves, Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale formation and emerging opportunities in Suriname and Guyana position the region to capture incremental global demand. Although crude oil from the region cannot replace all lost barrels in the short term, the quality and incremental barrels can help ease pressure on the supply side.

According to EICDataStream, production from Brazil may add 1.5m b/d of incremental crude by 2030. Guyana is expected to contribute 650,000 b/d, while Suriname is projected to add 220,000 b/d over the same period. Notable projects include three new FPSOs at Petrobras' giant Búzios pre-salt field in Brazil as well as four more of those at ExxonMobil's Stabroek block in Guyana.

Concurrently, Venezuela's potential return to global markets could become one of the most significant longterm shifts for the industry. While the country could eventually bring substantial oil volumes back to the market, rebuilding its oil sector will require major investment and several years of rehabilitation. Much of the infrastructure remains outdated and poorly maintained, meaning initial efforts will likely focus on restoring existing facilities before new investments can support production growth. As a result, any meaningful increase in output may still take 3-5 years to materialise.

Another way South America could benefit from the crisis in the Middle East is through rising commodity prices. Those tensions have inflated oil prices – from around US$60 to over US$100 – improving the economics for project advancement. One example is Petrobras' SEAP project in Northeast Brazil, which is expected to open a new gas frontier in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin with the deployment of two FPSOs (P-81 and P-87). The stronger price environment has reportedly been a decisive factor in Petrobras' decision to sanction both units, contracted with SBM under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model. Looking ahead, energy prices are expected to remain above pre-crisis levels, supporting investment momentum. However, these gains must be weighed against the broader macroeconomic pressures that elevated prices can unleash, particularly inflation.

On the demand side, OPEC projects global oil consumption will grow by 1.2m b/d in 2026 and a further 1.5m b/d in 2027, underpinned by an anticipated expansion of the global economy. Against this backdrop of resilient demand, the supply disruptions stemming from Middle Eastern instability have only sharpened the case for geographic diversification of oil flows. South American barrels are then well positioned to fill that role. For that potential to be fully realised, however, producers across the region must press ahead with E&P programmes to replenish reserves and lay the groundwork for sustained production growth in the years ahead.

Brazil's biodiesel expansion faces major challenges as feedstock pressure from other alternative fuels competition intensifies

Energy policy ambitions meet technical and feedstock realities

After nearly two decades of steady growth supported by mandatory blending mandates and abundant agricultural resources, Brazil's biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) market is now facing structural challenges related to feedstock availability, technical feasibility and competition from advanced biofuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable/green diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil, HVO).

The country increased its mandatory biodiesel blend to B15 in August 2025, reinforcing its position as the largest biodiesel market in Latin America and one of the largest globally. However, the recent postponement of the planned B16 implementation under the Fuel of the Future Law (Law No 14,993 of 2024) illustrates how future growth will increasingly depend on technical validation and supply chain sustainability rather than solely on regulatory ambition.

Law No 14,993 established a pathway towards B20 by 2030 through annual one-percentage-point increases in biodiesel blending. Nevertheless, Brazilian authorities delayed B16 to allow additional testing on engine compatibility, fuel stability, operational safety and emissions performance. According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), technical evaluations for blends above B15 should continue until at least 2027.

The decision reflects growing recognition that higher biodiesel blends require more sophisticated quality control and broader co-ordination across the fuel supply chain.

Soybean oil dependence remains the main structural limitation

Brazil's biodiesel market continues to rely heavily on soybean oil. In 2026, approximately 74% of biodiesel feedstock is expected to come from soy methyl esters, while animal fats, used cooking oil (UCO) and other vegetable oils represent smaller shares.

This concentration creates structural vulnerability. While biodiesel production capacity can expand relatively quickly through investment, feedstock supply depends on agricultural cycles, export dynamics and competition from other industries.

The market is no longer challenged by industrial capacity, but by the availability of low-carbon lipid feedstocks.

This issue becomes increasingly relevant as global demand for SAF and renewable diesel accelerates. Feedstocks such as UCO, tallow and distilled corn oil are becoming more attractive for hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathways due to their lower carbon intensity (CI) and stronger international premiums.

As a result, Brazil's biodiesel sector is beginning to compete directly with aviation decarbonisation markets.

Although Brazil is expected to produce a record soybean crop exceeding 179m tonnes in 2026, rising biodiesel demand is already reducing the availability of soybean oil exports. By 2027, approximately 7.5m tonnes of soybean oil could be directed toward biodiesel production, compared with 4.1m tonnes for food use and only 1.5m tonnes for exports.

become increasingly important

Brazil continues to modernise its regulatory framework to support higher biodiesel blends.

Brazil's National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) recently updated biodiesel contamination testing methodologies and tightened diesel blend specifications, particularly for water content, acidity and cold-flow properties. These changes are essential as higher biodiesel concentrations increase sensitivity to storage, transport and operational conditions.

At the same time, Brazil's fuel quality monitoring programmes, including the Fuel Quality Monitoring Program (PMQC) biodiesel blends and the Biodiesel Quality Monitoring Program (PMQBio) for pure FAME, must be expanded significantly. Compliance levels remain acceptable, with biodiesel conformity rates exceeding 99% during early 2026.

The government is also investing in technical research. A national testing network supported by R$30m is currently evaluating blends up to B25, including physicochemical analyses, engine performance, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The programme demonstrates that future blend increases will depend increasingly on scientific validation rather than purely political decisions.

RenovaBio as Brazil's decarbonisation strategy

Brazil,s RenovaBio programme has consolidated itself as the most advanced market-based biofuel decarbonisation system in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Feedstock used for biodiesel production in Brazil from 2012 to 2027 (million litres/year)

Instead of relying on direct subsidies or carbon taxes, the programme uses tradable decarbonisation credits (CBIOs) linked to the lifecycle CI of biofuels. Producers with lower emissions profiles generate more credits, creating incentives for efficiency and sustainability improvements.

By April 2026, 315 biofuel plants were certified under RenovaBio and eligible to issue CBIOs. Ethanol remains dominant, but biodiesel participation (43 certified plants) continues expanding steadily.

Mandatory annual decarbonisation targets are also increasing rapidly. Brazil plans to raise annual CBIO targets from 49m in 2026 to more than 73m by 2035, while progressively reducing the CI of its fuel matrix.

Despite strong long-term fundamentals, CBIO prices weakened during 2025 and early 2026 due to policy uncertainty and delayed enforcement against non-compliant distributors. However, recent judicial decisions removing distributor exemptions should improve compliance and support market stability in the future.

Production capacity is sufficient, but feedstocks are not

Brazil currently operates 65 biodiesel plants with a total installed capacity exceeding 42,000 cubic metres per day. Biorefineries' utilisation rates remain at around 72%, suggesting sufficient industrial flexibility to support moderate increases in blending in the short term.

Nearly 30 additional biodiesel projects are expected to enter operation or expand between 2026 and 2028, potentially adding at least another 1.2bn litres of annual capacity.

Production and consumption of biodiesel in Brazil from 2013 to 2027 (million litres/year)

Still, industrial expansion alone will not solve the sector's long-term constraints.

Alternative feedstocks such as carinata, camelina and macaw palm are receiving growing attention because of their lower CI and diversification potential. However, these crops still face significant barriers to commercialisation and logistics.

Brazil also possesses significant untapped potential for UCO collection and improved animal fat recovery rates. Current UCO collection rates remain very low (3% in 2025) despite the size of the domestic food sector, with a high per-capita vegetable oil consumption (24kg per capita per year).

Feedstock diversification will therefore become essential if Brazil intends to move sustainably toward B20 or higher blends in the next decade.

Outlook: growth continues, but at a slower and more complex pace

Brazil's biodiesel market will likely continue expanding through higher mandates and rising diesel demand. Biodiesel production is expected to reach nearly 11bn litres in 2026, supported by B15 implementation and growing transportation demand.

SGS INSPIRE forecasts that diesel demand will grow between 2026 and 2040, implying that biodiesel demand will increase progressively.

Future increases beyond B15 will depend on feedstock availability, scientific validation, fuel quality management and co-ordination with competing low-carbon fuel pathways. SAF production, renewable diesel and other advanced biofuels will increasingly compete for the same lipid resources.

The country still possesses major advantages, including agricultural scale, strong industrial infrastructure and one of the world's most advanced biofuels regulatory systems. Nevertheless, future competitiveness will increasingly depend on diversification, carbon efficiency and supply chain resilience.

The era of rapid biodiesel expansion driven primarily by mandates is gradually ending. Brazil is now entering a different stage in which technical feasibility, feedstock economics and decarbonisation performance will determine the pace of growth.

Spotlight on technology

Onsite heat treatment is critical to construction, maintenance and turnaround projects, yet much of the work is still performed with limited visibility into the equipment systems that drive successful heat cycles. While temperature monitoring remains standard, it reflects only the output, not the operating conditions that determine reliability.

Superheat's SmartCenter™ facilities addresses this gap by providing centralised, real-time visibility into critical equipment diagnostics that underpin heat treatment execution. Recent SmartCenter™ upgrades expand beyond temperature control to monitor key operating parameters live, including engine speed, coolant temperature, generator wattage, injector rail pressure, voltage draw, fluid levels and battery reserve.

This level of visibility delivers 100% digital transparency into equipment system health, allowing operators to identify issues as they develop, not after a cycle is disrupted. If a parameter exceeds tolerance, SmartCenter™ automatically alerts both the panel operator and onsite technicians while triggering built-in failsafe protocols to protect personnel, equipment and project integrity.

The result is proactive diagnostics, faster decision-making and tighter co-ordination between field teams and centralised oversight, reducing risk, minimising delays and improving overall heat cycle reliability and execution.

As expectations evolve, so should how onsite heat treatment providers are evaluated. Beyond temperature charts, operators should be asking what equipment tolerances are visible in real time, what automated safeguards are in place and where systems are actively monitored and controlled. Insight into equipment health is no longer optional – it directly impacts safety, schedule certainty and project outcomes.

To learn more about Superheat’s SmartCenter™ capabilities, watch the video above and visit www.superheat.com to begin your next onsite heat treatment project.

Amarinth defies space constraints with technical breakthrough for major LNG expansion project

Amarinth, a world-class, net zero manufacturer of centrifugal pumps and associated equipment designed to minimise long-term operating costs with high-performance solutions across a diverse range of global markets, from onshore and offshore oil and gas industries to renewable and nuclear energy, defence, desalination and the process and industrial markets, has successfully engineered a bespoke suite of API 685 VS4 magnetic drive pumps for a high-profile LNG processing expansion in the Middle East, overcoming spatial limitations and complex maintenance hurdles to deliver a solution that reduces construction costs while ensuring zero emissions.

Renowned for its engineering agility, Amarinth was approached to solve the complex technical challenges associated with in-ground hydrocarbon and solvent drain drum tanks, where traditional pumping solutions were deemed insufficient for the project's spatial and safety requirements.

The project centred on massive inground hydrocarbon drain drum tanks some 2 metres in diameter and up to 10 metres in length. To ensure the most cost-effective fabrication, the contractor required the upstands and downstands (the vertical sections where the pumps are housed) to be as small as possible.

Minimising this footprint was critical to reducing flange loading and material costs, but it left Amarinth's engineers with very little room for error. The pumps had to be slender enough to thread through horizontal piping during installation, yet powerful enough to maintain rigorous flow duties, with impeller diameters across the different tanks ranging from 235mm to 635mm.

With very tight deadlines, Amarinth couldn't wait for the tanks to be completed to design the pumps and so worked closely with the fabricator during the tank design stages.

This project perfectly illustrates our engineering agility. By collaborating closely with the fabricator and rethinking the modularity of our API 685 VS4 magnetic drive pumps, we have designed a solution that isn't just technically superior, it's more cost-effective and easier to maintain.

Amarinth's engineering team utilised advanced computer modelling to design 5.5-metre-long API 685 magnetic drive vertical pumps that maintain a slim profile without sacrificing stability and require no external seal support system.

Key innovations include:

• Vibration control: to prevent resonance in the 5.5 metre shaft assembly, Amarinth optimised bearing spacing and design, ensuring the pumps remain within strict vibration tolerances even during the high-stress startup phase.

• Gulley sucker arrangement: unlike standard pumps that leave sediment at the tank bottom, Amarinth's unique design clears debris and dirty water from the very base of the downstand, protecting the long-term integrity of the system.

• Optimised vantage points: due to access restrictions onsite, Amarinth designed a custom baseplate that aligns all vital gauges and instrumentation within a narrow, optimised viewing angle, allowing operators to monitor performance safely from a single vantage point.

The pumps have been designed to API 685 3rd edition specifications, ensuring hermetic containment of volatile fluids and eliminating the potential of fugitive emissions associated with traditional mechanical seals.

In-ground tanks are installed at an angle, typically requiring two different pump lengths for each end. However, identical pumps were required to simplify maintenance. Amarinth's solution was a bespoke modular design that achieves complete interchangeability. This allows a single bare shaft pump to serve either position in the tank during maintenance, reducing the inventory costs and simplifying long-term servicing.

Recognising an aggressive project schedule, Amarinth will bypass traditional manufacturing bottlenecks, such as testing, using its split delivery methodology that it has developed with its supportive supply chain. Instead of waiting for the full order to be completed, where one small issue can delay everything, Amarinth will manufacture and deliver tested batches of pumps in parallel with the tank fabrication. This ensures that the moment a tank is completed, the pumps will be onsite and ready for installation.

Veolia: water security in the oil and gas sector

Water scarcity is no longer just an environmental concern but has become a strategic risk for the oil and gas industry. Regions with limited freshwater availability are now home to some of the world's largest energy exploration and production complexes and exclusive dependence on conventional supply sources is an increasing vulnerability for operational continuity.

Offshore platforms, coastal refineries and energy industrial complexes require significant volumes of water for cooling, steam generation and reservoir injection. With intensified drought periods, regulatory restrictions on water intake and ESG pressure on operators, diversifying the water matrix is no longer optional, it has become a strategic necessity.

In this context, seawater desalination emerges as one of the most robust solutions to ensure water security in coastal and offshore operations. Today, desalination technology enables the development of reliable, scalable alternative sources that are increasingly competitive, reducing operational costs and contributing to companies' decarbonisation goals.

Securing safe and independent water sources brings concrete benefits to operations: it ensures productive continuity even in scenarios of severe water restrictions, reduces exposure to regulatory and licensing risks, decreases competition for resources with local communities and strengthens companies' ESG reputations. Additionally, predictable supply allows for more efficient operational planning, with less exposure to emergency costs and unplanned interruptions.

Designed to operate in highly demanding environments, Veolia's reverse osmosis desalination systems combine state-of-the-art membranes and integrated energy recovery to serve operations on offshore platforms and isolated coastal terminals.

In a modular format, these solutions bring together intake, pre-treatment and final polishing in compact, automated and easily installable units, ensuring continuous operation with minimal human intervention.

Veolia’s systems deliver certifiedquality process water with a reduced carbon footprint, aligning water security and decarbonisation in a single solution.

Zelim's ZOE becomes world's first fully certified man-overboard detection system

Zelim's AI-enabled ZOE man-overboard detection (MOB) system has received official ISO 21195:2020 certification from the independent classification body Lloyd's Register, following successful completion of testing.

This follows extensive sea trials on board the Ambition vessel, managed by Ambassador Cruise Line – the first time the ISO testing has been completed on a cruise vessel. The performance of ZOE was monitored while the cruise ship was underway for a continuous period of 90 days, during which the ZOE system achieved a 97% detection rate during simulated man-overboard tests, exceeding the ISO's minimum requirement.

The standard that ZOE has met – ISO 21195 – is a globally recognised benchmark, developed in collaboration between the cruise industry, the US Coast Guard and technology providers, which sets out the minimum required performance for automatic man-overboard detection systems used on passenger ships. While child detection is not a requirement as part of the ISO assessment, ZOE's certification has made it the first MOB detection system capable of detecting both adults and children using ISO 21195.

The certification of ZOE is expected to have a significant impact on the cruise industry and the maritime sector more widely, offering a reliable, proven solution to meet requirements outlined in The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 (CVSSA).

Photo 2026 © Copyright Veolia

Developed by Zelim, ZOE MOB harnesses advanced computer vision and video analytics to deliver 360 degree surveillance for vessel crew. The system is trained on a proprietary maritime dataset of over 9.5m annotated objects and is designed to detect man-overboard incidents instantaneously.

This ISO award reflects Zelim's ongoing mission to make unmanned search and rescue the industry standard. Having completed all three phases of ISO 21195 testing, the company will now focus efforts on securing widespread global uptake of the ZOE technology, both in the global cruise sector and in other industries such as defence.
