Figure 1: Market overview across all sectors in Asia Pacific, excluding China. Source: EICDataStream EICDataStream tracks over 3,900 projects as of June 2026. Total estimated investment (CAPEX) in the region stands at US$2.45tn with mature renewables and oil and gas accounting for the largest share at 35% and 28%. Energy transition and energy storage are seeing steady growth, with total CAPEX of US$315.2bn and US$185.2bn respectively, signalling growing momentum towards decarbonisation strategies. The region is seeing some interest in nuclear technology with projects progressing in early feasibility and conceptual designs such as the DaeguGyeongbuk SMR Power Plant (KHNP). This is driven by the need for low-carbon baseload power to complement renewables, support AI data centres and enable industrial decarbonisation, particularly for large scale hydrogen and ammonia production. Across ASEAN, SMRs such as the Philippines SMR Project by NuScale are increasingly viewed as the preferred choice for island grids, dedicated industrial hubs and the replacement of retiring coal assets.

Project start-ups are expected to peak in 2028 with 688 projects scheduled to come online and 2029 with 645 projects. Capital investments are skewed towards the established mature renewables sector with US$679.3bn compared to emerging low-carbon solutions with US$315.1bn, reflecting a gradual scaling up of the transitional energy landscape in the region. Energy security is contributing to continued growth in oil and gas, particularly in LNG, upstream, refining and petrochemicals, as projects continue to advance through the development pipeline. In addition, AI and data centres are emerging as key drivers of rising investment in renewables and transmission infrastructure, as governments are expanding their energy mix and upgrading key transmission lines to support demand growth. The sector’s total CAPEX is estimated at US$845bn comprising US$232bn in upstream, US$175bn in midstream and US$438bn in downstream. In the upstream sector, major projects such as Indonesia’s Abadi Gas Field and Australia’s Browse Field Development continue to progress, with both projects expected to reach final investment decision (FID) within the next few years. The region is also seeing an increasing number of licensing rounds being announced. Governments across the region are also intensifying efforts to support future gas demand. In Malaysia, the government approved two regasification terminals in Lumut and Yan in 2026, underscoring the country’s commitment to strengthening gas supply security. In Vietnam, a recent ministerial decree has accelerated LNG-to-power project development timelines.

Figure 6: APAC mature renewables key markets by projected capacity 2026-2032, excluding China. Source: EICDataStream APAC’s renewable energy pipeline shows the strongest opportunities in solar PV, followed by onshore wind. Solar remains the largest segment, with India leading at around 139GW of projected capacity. India continues to anchor demand through SECI auctions, as well as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaa (PM-KUSUM) scheme. This is followed by Australia at 87GW and the Philippines at nearly 20GW. Onshore wind is mainly driven by Australia, with around 104GW of pipeline capacity, far ahead of India’s 34GW. This momentum is supported by Australia’s Capacity Investment Scheme, with around 5.6GW of onshore wind capacity awarded under the latest National Electricity Market (NEM) generation tender, CIS Tender 7. Meanwhile, offshore wind has a smaller near-term capacity pipeline but offers stronger long-term potential, particularly in Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea. While offshore wind ambitions are growing across the region, large-scale capacity additions are unlikely to materialise until after 2032. Around 10.7GW of offshore wind capacity is expected to be tendered across APAC in the second half of 2026. Overall, near-term opportunities are strongest in solar and onshore wind, while offshore wind is emerging as the next major growth area.

Figure 5: APAC key oil and gas projects. Source: EICDataStream Abadi LNG Project The project is currently in the FEED tender phase for the FPSO, gas export pipeline (GEP) and SURF scopes following the award of these packages in August 2025. The operator is targeting FID by Q4 2026 with start-up anticipated in 2030. Lumut LNG Regasification Terminal (RGT3) Malaysia’s Ministry of Economy has issued notification letters to PETRONAS Gas for the development of the third regasification terminal (RGT-3) in Lumut based on a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) concept. Tuban Refinery and Petrochemical Complex (Pertamina) PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) has initiated the prequalification (PQ) process for the EPC contract covering two major refinery packages. The FID for the project is expected to be taken in 2026. For more information visit...

However, FID rates across these sectors remain low, with hydrogen at 7.6%, clean fuels at 4.53%, SMR/AMR at 0.98% and no FIDs recorded for nuclear fusion or floating offshore wind. Carbon capture shows stronger progress, with three large-scale projects having reached FID, namely the Kasawari, Tangguh and Arthit CCS projects. Apart from carbon capture, most projects that are moving forward remain small-scale, pilot or demonstration developments. This shows that these sectors are still at an early stage, with developers focused on proving technical feasibility and commercial viability before scaling up. To progress to FID, these sectors will need clearer regulation, long-term offtake, government support, access to financing, enabling infrastructure and a stronger supply chain.
