EIC’s five golden rules for a healthy energy supply chain

The EIC outlines five “golden rules” for a resilient energy supply chain: stable, long-term policy; diverse, integrated technologies; a clear pipeline of profitable projects; sustained funding for innovation; and proactive international trade. Countries like Norway, the UAE, and Germany demonstrate that consistent strategy, multi-technology adoption, and export engagement drive

faster renewable deployment, stronger industrial capacity, and global competitiveness. By contrast, fragmented policies and weak pipelines, seen in the UK and US, undermine investment and slow climate progress. Adhering to these principles ensures energy security, affordability, and sustainability — critical for industrial resilience and longterm economic prosperity.

Nuclear power remains a significant part of the global energy mix, with total installed capacity of around 100 GW worldwide.

Across the APAC region (excluding China), there is approximately 50 GW of operational nuclear capacity, alongside 25 GW undergoing decommissioning and around 23.5 GW that has been permanently ceased or suspended.

This trend is largely driven by ageing reactor fleets in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, alongside public sentiment shaped by the

Fukushima disaster in 2011, which led to the shutdown of much of Japan’s nuclear capacity.

More recently, attitudes towards nuclear energy have begun to shift, driven by growing energy security concerns, geopolitical tensions, rising power demand and the expansion of data centres.

In response, Japan has adjusted its nuclear policy to allow reactor restarts under strict safety protocols and, in 2023, introduced measures permitting operation beyond the previous 60-year limit. Taiwan,

which took its nuclear fleet offline last year, is also reversing course, with plans to restart selected plants anticipated by March this year.

Overall, nuclear power remains a dynamic and evolving sector across the APAC region, warranting close attention in the years ahead.

25 years of EICDataStream

We celebrated 25 years of EICDataStream last year. The system went live in April 2000 and has been continuously developed and improved ever since by Bob Gear (Head of Information Systems) - the architect of the system - and his team. Major improvements are coming with the integration of CAPEX and OPEX data into a single product, and use of AI for more convenient searching is being investigated. Check out the EICDataStream podcast to learn more about the early days of EICDataStream.

EIC MARKET

MI Updates

As 2025 draws to a close we have just run our latest data sets that review market trends. A brief snapshot of this data shows that the cleantech sectors inclusive of all renewable sectors, Nuclear, Carbon Capture, Hydrogen, Energy Storage and Clean Fuels represent 70% of the projects tracked in EICDataStream. The oil and gas industry continues to see significant activity and currently the sector has close to US$1tn of projects that have reached a final investment decision under development.

EIC Consult News

For the past few months, the Consult team has been involved in three major projects for the UK Department for Business and Trade, in which we will identify British supply chain strengths across the decommissioning, hydrogen, and carbon capture sectors. The analysis assesses how and where these strengths can provide a competitive advantage in selected international markets, including Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America.

Hydrogen Realities Hit Africa with No Offtake, Insufficient Pipelines and Nascent Supply Chain: EIC Insight Report

The latest Africa Hydrogen Report highlights how hydrogen realities are hitting Africa’s export push, with a lack of firm offtake agreements, insufficient pipeline infrastructure and a nascent local supply chain raising doubts over how quickly projects can move from plans to final investment decisions.

Data from EICDataStream shows 78 green hydrogen projects proposed across the continent, led by Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. Many countries are positioning themselves as future suppliers of green hydrogen and derivatives such as ammonia, aiming to convert abundant solar and wind resources into exports for Asia and Europe. Some are also exploring opportunities in green steel. However, the market remains at an early stage. Only two smallscale green hydrogen projects are currently operating in Africa, both in Namibia, with a combined capacity of 17 megawatts.

The report estimates Africa’s proposed electrolyser capacity at

around 38 gigawatts, backed by $194bn in planned investment. Costs are higher than in Europe because many projects include major supporting infrastructure, including pipelines, power generation and desalination. Investment is also concentrated. Egypt, Morocco and South Africa account for roughly 80% of proposed spending, with Egypt alone representing close to half.

EICDataStream News by Zul Aiman, Research Analyst CAPEX

Philippines’ Green Energy Auction (GEA4) results were announced in November 2025, awarding over 10GW of renewable capacity to 123 operators. Domestic players dominated 60% of the awards while foreign developers claimed the rest. Local’s Citicore led ground-mounted solar with over 800MW across 17 projects and SMC Global topped the table with 2.23GW where mostly from ground-mounted and floating solar farms, largely driven by the 630MW Cauayan Solar Phase 2.
