What Would Jesus Do ... about the Creation/Evolution Controversy?

Perhaps you were raised as a Christian and now you're having to wrestle with seemingly anti-biblical concepts being taught in a biology course (or physics, or sociology, or anthropology,or ... ).

You're unsure how best to deal with the "cognitive dissonance"you're experiencing. Or maybe It's a friend who's going through such a trial. You might be pondering, "What would Jesus do?"

The word "Christian,"according to its original definition found in Acts 11:26, is a disciple of Christ.

The word "disciple" (Greek µafhJ'fT/~,mathetes) is related to the verb "to learn" (Greek µaveavw, manthano). (Greek was the original language of all the New Testament documents.)

A Christian Is therefore, by definition, a "learner" of Christ, a person who acknowledges Jesus as the unique "Teacher and Lord" (John 13:13) "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge"(Colossians2:3). Christians understand Jesus as the prophet foretold by Moses with the warning "you must listen to everything he tells you" (Deuteronomy18:15-19; cf. Acts 3:22f.). Christians accept Jesus as the one authenticatedby God the Father with the words "This is my Son, whom I have chosen: listen to him" (Luke 9:35).

So for serious Christians (as distinct from merely "nominal" or "cultural" Christians), It ls crucial to ask regarding any Issue:What would Jesus do or teach In this situation or on this topic? lfwe look into what this Master Teacher would do with the origins debate, we are Immediatelychallenged by the followlng key statement, in which Jesus respondsto a question from the Pharisees concerning marriage and divorce: "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginningthe Creator •made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has Joined,let man not separate" (Matthew 19:4-6).

We observe that when he Is questioned on his views concerning male-female relationships,Jesus goes straight to the Bible, using the challenge, "Haven't you read... ?" Obviously, he viewed the

Scriptures as the authoritative place to start when dealing with this crucial moral/ethicalquestion.

To address this hot contemporary issue, Jesus points specificallyto the book of Genesis, where marriagewas first instituted by God. Even a quick reading of Jesus's words leads us to conclude that he is clearly a creationist of some sort, since he affirms the existence of a "Creator."

Next, we see that since Jesus quotes prooftexts (two of them) from Scripture, he is clearly a Biblical creationist. (Unlike some of today's "Intelligent Design" advocates,Jesus is willing to identify exactly who this "Creator'' Is: the God of the Bible.)

Furthermore,since Jesus refers to Genesis as if it were the historical, authoritativeWord of God, he is clearly a Genesis1/teralfst.

In fact, his two quotations (spoken virtually within the same breath) are taken from each of the first two chapters of Genesis those chapters which are alleged by unbelieving scholars to contradict each otherl In addition, since Jesus states that the creation of humans took place "at the beginning''(compare Mark 10:6, "at the beginning of creation''), he is clearly a young-Earth creationist. (In the evolutionary scenario, humans don't arrive until almost the ~nd of the history of the universe.)

Thus we are faced with the fact that the Master Teacher, the one to whom Christians are required to listen, appears to strongly affirm creation.

E. o. Wilson, the noted Harvard biologist, recognized that the Bible as a whole makes "no provision for evolution."As a young student, Wilson found this quite disconcerting:"The biblical authors had missed the most important revelation of alll" (Consilience.New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1998. p. 6).

But what if the Bible is actually a true and sufficient guide for faith and life (as Jesus held)? The fact that it doesn't refer to evolution (or even allow for it) then becomes strong evidence against evolutionl Could Jesus have simply been "accommodating" himself to the beliefs of his contemporaries?(I.e., did he quote Scripture to them just because they believed it?) This seems very unlikely, based on his high regard for truth, and In light of his unwillingness to kowtow to popular opinions on other Issues.

Jesus quoted Scripture not only to his fellow Jews,

but also to his heavenly Father (Mark 15:34; John 17:12) and even to Satan (Luke 4:8). He cited Scripture during times of temptation, trial, and intense suffering. He understood his own ministry In terms of biblical prophecies, and he continued to do this even after his resurrection(Luke 24:25-27,44).

Jesus plainly regardedthe early chapters of Genesis as historical.This Is evident In his references to Abel (Luke 11:50f.), Noah, the Ark, and the Flood (Matthew 24:37-39; Luke 17:26f.), and Sodom and Gomorrah (Matthew 10:15).

Beyond all such arguments, the New Testament emphasizes that Jesus (as the Son of God) was an eyewitness of the creation because he was personally present-as the Creator! (John 1:1-3, 14: 1 Corinthians8:6; Colosslans 1:16; Hebrews 1:2,10-12). Unbelieversmay mock at this, but It Is the historic (orthodox) Christian teaching, and it dovetails with many of the amazing claims that Jesus made about himself - such as his claim that our eternal destinies depend on our relationshipto him (John 5:24-27).

For a variety of reasons, many Canadianswould like to call themselves"Christian," but are nervous about putting their full confidence in the Scriptures that Jesus upheld. The Master Teacher had an adjectiveto describe such people: ''foolish." "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!'' (Luke 24:25).

Human Rights Scrutinized During the Olympics SONJA SZLOVICSAK wish to use the 2010 Winter Games to STAFF WRITERdraw attention to areas of their interhe B.C. Civil Liberties Association is concerned that restrictions of free expression near Olympic venues during the Olympics is a violation of freedom of speech. The BCCLA is partnering with Pivot Legal Society to provide legal observers that will ensure that rights are not violated during the Olympics.

On September 16th, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympics (VANOC) released an outline of their position on freedom o( expression in public areas during the Olympics. 'lhe BCCLA and Pivot arc worried that the restrictions VANOC is placing on free expression will violate freedom of speech, which is a constitutional right.

VANOC has stated they will supply areas away from venues, but that are fully visible and accessible to the media and public, for protest. These protest areas are typical during the Olympics. During the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government provided the same protest areas, but required protesters to apply for a permit to protest. No permits were Issued, but there were accusations that protest applicants were arrested.

In a press release on September 16th,VANOC stated, "for those who

Safe assembly areas for this purpose are being proposed by Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit (VISU) and they will be facilitated by the police of juris• diction outside a ticketed Games venue."

Critics of th is policy are terming these safe assembly areas "protest pens."

VANOC has stated that: "Demonstrators are not required to use safe assembly areas, but they wlll be made available to ensure a clear space is maintained for demonstrations In the busy environment around each venue."

However, the Olympic Charter states: "No kind of demonstration or

political, religious or racial propaganda Is permitted In any Olympic sites, venues or other areas." The protest areas are supposed to allow protesters be near Olympic events, without interfering with the events. VANOC has not released Information regarding how large these protest areas will

VANOC is a legal advocacy group based in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. Pivot states one of its goals is to use the media as a public education tool to focus on issues such as police misconduct. The BCCLA states their mandate is: "to preserve, defend, maintain and extend civil liberties and human rights in British Columbia and across Canada."

Originated by Fraser Health and Act, now British Columhia (BC), "Breathing Easy" is a provincewide program being at institutions like UFV. As Student Services are providing the funding for "Breathing Easy," this particular segment of the province-wide program Is only for UFV students.

According to Statistics Canada, l6.S percent of the Canadian population were smokers in 2005. In the same report, BC was doing a bit better than the national average, provincial numbers sitting at 12.6 percent. While BC seems to be doing well in comparison to the national average, Sheila Edwards of the Nursing faculty wants students of UFV to "know the Impact on people's health and the benefits of quitting smoking." Edwards, a nursing faculty member since 1990 says, "we know it is difficult to quit smoking and that it is helpful to do so in a group."

Each participant of "Breathing Easy" will be provided with a workbook, lots of advice and all the support they need to get through the arduous process ofkickinga smoking habit. Dana Boogert, who graduated from UFV with a double major of English Literature and History in December 2008, had two cavities filled at the dentist on July 16th of this year.

Because she had bought the UFV Health And Dental Plan, she was still covered by Sun Life Assurance until August 31st, "In our Health and Dental Plan it says we get four hundred dollars ... they cover 80%of your fees for regular work, like having a cavity...so when 1 got the bill...it was for about three hundred and some dollars", "I was thinking, ''lhat's way too much'. And I knew 1 wasn't over the !four hundred dollar] limit. ..after the supposed deduction, it was still very high", Boogert called Sun Life Assurance to enquire. However, "it was very difficult to communicate with Sun Life.

I phoned the first time and said, Tm having some issues here, I don't believe what I was charged is correct ...[they said] we can assure you that it is right, we don't make mistakes ...then the transferred me to somebody else... they really were not helpful...they just didn't want to know".

UFV RegistrationNumbers are Increasing PAULBRAMMlR

STAFF WRITER no-one was quite sure how much ...We

tudent registration at UFV is up by 8.5 percent this year, according to the school's "Enrolment Tracking" data. The total amount of students who registered for the fall of this year is 28,914, compared to 26,876 from 2008/09. The total number of students registered has risen steadily over the last three years, from the initial nu mber of25,027 In 2007/08.

Robert Buchan, the Vice President, External of UFV, explained this increase, '"[1he figures are] a little higher [than projected expectations] for two major reasons - one, Is we're feeling the full effects of the recession, and we're inversely proportioned to the recession, and two, we got the university brand, where kids are more comfortable coming here Loget a credential, so we had a jump when we first got it and that's been sustained".

One of the reasons for the rise in registrations prior to the recession was the B.C. Government's Strategic lnltlallves Plan, which gave money to institutions In order to stimulate growth, "more than $40 million", according to the official mission statement of the Strategic Initiative Plan.

Now, however, the funding is no longer available. Buchan stated, "In past years we were expected to grow; we got pald money Logrow...We were one of the final schools to get growth money. This year ...there's no money to grow, bul we're still taking more students, so what you're seeing is a higher fill rate in classes - they've gone up Just slightly".

Buchan expects the amount of students registering each year wlll continue to grow, "We figured we would be up because of the recession;

think [the numbers] will continue to go up as long as It's hard to find a Job... we have pretty good demographics In the valley, so we're up probably a little bit higher than other schools, but the big universities arc up as well".

The other statistics disclosed by the "Enrolment Tracking" are the numbers of students attending classes. These numbers arc compiled as the "Head Count". These numbers are also up: the domestic total of the 'Head Count' this September ls 8,578.

This is up from 7,974 In 2008, and 7,167 in 2007. That comprises a 7.6% increase from 2008 to this year.

Another possible reason for the increase in registration and the "Head Count" is what Buchan refers to as, "non-traditiona I students ... the 25-40 year olds who left high school and went to work, and now are saying, 'I have a mortgage, I have a family, I need some upgrading or re-skilling'.

That's a big bulge".

Buchan believes that the Fraser Valley will be an area that will not be as affected by the recession as others, "Abbotsford and the Valley are one of the lasl areas to go Into a recession and one of the Jirst lo come out, because they have a really strong agricultural base ...and it doesn't matter about the economy [because] everybody cats.

So, it's pretty strong".

The possibility of growth at UFV is something that Buchan welcomes, "We have eighty-some acres of campus in Chilliwack, whereas a lot of schools don't have that room to build.

So, we're poised for growth". However, Buchan made dear that any growth of U FV must not compromise the core values of the Institution, or the needs of the community, "We're about to

start a Strategic Planning Effort with the new President, and we'll decide how big is too big for us", According to Buchan, the Strategic Planning Effort will strive to form a consensus among the school and the outlying communities, "The Strategic Plan wlll be talking to students, faculty and the community, [saying] 'you're a community, you have needs, you have problems that need to be solved"'.

The Strategic Planning Effort will focus on two fundamental questions, "one is growth, and two, what's the balance of access versus merit? About 35 percent of the kids in Grade eight end up with a post-secondary credential; of a 100 here, 3S come out ...

If that's a batting average, that's really good; If it's a major public policy aim, that's not so good ... in theory, there should be more kids graduating from high school, there should be more corning for a post- secondary credential, and if they do that, we'll have steady growth".

Buchan believes that any growth that UFV experiences must be sustainable for the school, and the traditions that it prides itself upon, "One of the real advantages is the class size here, and the fact that teachers teach, and the teachers mark ... parents and teachers look at where they want to go, they'll look at schools that teach and are good at it. .. I visited some fourthyear classes at UBC that are still two to three hundred kids ... [a student] will get good atte_ntlon [at UPV]... the class Is smaller ... you will get access to the teacher".

The Globe and Mail Newspaper last week printed a piece by columnist Margaret Wente, deriding certain universities for losing sight of their

priorities, "universities are unaccountable for results ... because they arc run for the benefit of professors.

In the reward system of universities, it's research, not teaching, that matters. Professors are rewarded not for turning out high-quality graduates, but for turning out books and papers - even if they are unread. This perverse system stubbornly persists, despite lhc fact that everyone knows It's absurd".

From the same article, Mark Bauerlein, a professor of English at Emory University, is quoted as saying, "1lle system has reached absurd proportions ... productivity demands in language and literary studies levy a grave cost on higher education. Students need mentoring, and when they don't get it, many drift away permanently".

Buchan stresses that U FV is built on different Ideals, "Typically the research done here Is to Inform the teaching ... so the research informs the teaching as opposed to Informing the acadcrnic career".

In addition, Buchan believes that UFV is a welcoming environment for students to come to, "When we became a university, a couple of the values that popped out were that [UFV] was a nurturing, safe environrnenl... it was seen as a quite friendly place".

Buchan believes that VFV's success is linked to the growth of the communities that feed It, and that success for one mca ns success for the other, "There's a really growing, vibrant business community lin Abbotsford] ...What happens is, if you get out of high-school and you go away, you tend not to come back ...When we talk to engineering firms, accounting firms and others, if [the firms] bring In somebody to train from Prince

George, Vancouver or Victoria, they get their training and they tend to go.

If the person that [the firms] bring In was born [In Abbotsford] and went Loschool [at UFV]...lhe odds arc that they'll feel more comfortable".

Baker House Residence on campus is full this year; Buchan states that Residence can be seen as UFV in microcosm, due to the diversity of the students living there, "Residence Is full [this year] ... There's International students, but there's also ... [local] kids In residence that have gotten out of their parent's basement ...so they're close cnough ...to families In the valley, but they've got an Independence in residence ..." "[For a parent of a UFV student], having [their child] away at school but still having the family connection is really good ...The Valley has really diverse ethnic comt'nunities; there's a really strong sense of family. So if their kid can maintain their family support but still have their independence, It resonates really well".

For the future of UFV, Buchan, as Vice President, External, Is looking further ahead for models of success that the school can follow, "We're looking al...some Incredible under-grad teaching schools in the Maritimes ... that keep their student size reasonably small ... !such as! St. Francis Xavier, Mo~mt Allison, Acadia ... we're having a real hard look at those kinds of universities that don't aspire to have 30,000 students, but are regionally based and really good at under-grad teaching".

Student Unemployment on the Rise: StatsCan Report PAULBRAMMER STAFF WRITER is partly regulated by the understandccording to a report released by Statistics Canada on September 4, student unemployment reached 16.4 percent in the month of August. lhis figure is the highest August unemployment rate for students since comparable data became available In 1977.

This figure is up five percentage points from August of last year. According to the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, this means that there were 128,000 (9.S percent) less jobs for students aged 15-24 than there were In August of 2008 - this was the fastest year-over-year rate of decline for a month of August since 1983. The total amount of money lost from these jobs is over $S00 million.

Arati Sharma, National Director of the Canadian A1Jiance of Student Associations, said, "The reality Is more students will be in need of student financial assistance this fall.

The government must recognize that changes to the student financial aid system are essential at this time".

The "pre-study income contribution" is then deducted from the amount of money In loans the student receives. However, due to so many Jess Jobs being available for students aged I S-24, and the cut amount of hours that those In employment are having to deal with (the average number of hours worked during the summer by students was 23.4 hours per week, the lowest since 1977), students are going to have markedly less, or nothing at all, to contribute to their pre-study Income.

Sharma went on to say, "The problem Is that all students are required to make this contribution whether they earned any money during the summer or not, and regardless of how much they earned".

Under the current system, there is no allowance made for the possibility that a student may be underemployed, or unable to find employment at all. Furthermore, if a student works throughout the school year, the government reduces a student's loan

by every dollar earned above $50 per week.

CASA is proposing that these stipulations are suspended for the year ahead, "One step that will ensure students have the necessary resources for the upcoming school year is to temporarily suspend the required summer income contribution for the 2009· 2010 school year. This wlll put up to $2,500 back into a student's pocket".

"1hese claw backs are increasing the burden for students who need financial assistance the most ... If removing these requirements is not Immediate, students will be forced to take on more private debt, and for some, it will be a choice of whether or not to complete their education."

On September IS, CASA met with Justin Trudeau, Member of Parliament for Papineau, to discuss the situation, "Students arc grateful for the opportunity to talk about these issues with Mr. Trudeau," said Sharma.

"It Is crucial for all our leaders to recognize the urgent need for changes to the post-secondary education system In Canada and we welcome any opportunity to discuss these concerns".

Jack Brown, the President of the Student Union Society, said, 'Student unemployment Is the worst I've ever seen it ... this has a major impact on students ... some are unable to return to their studies ... and that is unacceptable."

"We are looking for better support from the government, more effective policies, more effective funding ... we liaise regularly with provincial and federal politicians ..directly with the provincial MLA ... we arc a member of CASA, which regularly deals with the federal government on behalf of students ...

"We do get regular updates [from CASA], [their approach] generally seems to be In line with ... the certain approach we want the federal government to take ... CASA is only a federal lobbying group ... there's no provincial lobbying group apart from the CFSBC, which we are not a part of, so we've only been able to liaise directly with the local MLAs on issues like this."

When questioned about the answer to the problem of student unemployment, Brown said, "The only answer ... is to let your representatives know ... tell the university, more importantly, tell your MPs and the MLAs, only ... when actual students start talking to their representatives will real change happen ... we need more effective students loans and grants, we need lower tuition fees, we need better access ... that can only happen when students express themselves to the policy makers and the law makers''.

There is a shortage of parking at UFV, and It seems to make tempers

I don't quite understand how U FV plans to keep spectators from parking on campus during classes. Last summer, UFV allowed spectators Lo park In some of our lots, and gave students free parking in the remaining lots. One solution Is ensuring that everyone coming into the university parking lots has UFV identification. ITowcver, this would prevent visitors from finding parking, and people picking students up may not have student identification.

This semester, now that the campus is full and the parking lots are packed, parking al UFV will be difficult to manage. They were then taken by Ministry of Children and Family Development officials.

At the time the potential charges Included abuse, assault and/or neglect of children. However, the Abbotsford police will not be recommending charges against the father, because they were not able to establish how long the children were in the vehicle.

The seven week investigation and witness Interviews did not provide su lficienl information to warrant charges.

Since there was no record of the length of time the children spent in the car, they claim they cannot charge the man. However, that seems un-

TI1eheat was so excruciating that the children suffered from dehydration, and at their age, it could have been fatal. lhe police should have at least charged the father with neglect. '111e children could have been kidnapped, or the father could have stumbled out of the Fat Pig and driven them home drunk. He might have crashed and killed them.

How is it possible that someone could display such ignorance in letting their children sit in a car in a heat wave with no open windows or anything? It's sad that he was allowed to go free and not face any punishment for his actions. He could have killed those children.

The evidence was there in the pained faces of the neglected children. 1he man should have at least been charged for endangering their lives.

A Festival for All Cultures Abby Fest Promotes Multiculturalism intheValley APRIL HODSON about the cultural or religious group

CONTRIBUTORthat each outfit came from and Inforn September 26th Abby Fest, the Abbotsford Multicultural Festival, rocked the new Entertainment and Sports Center in a global way. Featuring music and dance, delicious food, activities for the kids and booths packed with information about different countries around the world. 1his free (except for parking), annual event even had a fashion show featuring outfits from all over the world. The place was packed with both people and fun.

'Ihe aim of this event was to increase awarenessof Multiculturalism.

TI1eorganizers feel that this will help build and sustain trust and mutual respect in our diverse culture. Bypro• moting multiculturalism they hope to encourage racial harmony and understanding. Also they hope to give citizens a sense of cultural identity and allow those with a cultural identity already to keep them. It gives us all a chance to celebratethe traditions of other cultures ln a fun festival set• ting.

The stage was full of entertainment. Th.etcwas a fashion show where ethnic outfits were shown off.The MC even provided a bit of information

mation about the outfit itself and how, where and why it was worn. 'Therewas music from many cultures as well as dancing from Celtic, Bhangra, Ukrni• nian and Chinese traditions.

For those who wanted to learn more about the origin of the dancers there were booths with information about many of the cultures. These booths included simple information such as where the cultures were from and what their flag looked like as well as more in depth material such as day to day living in that lifestyle. If the posters did not answer all of your questions someone, often dressed In traditional clothing, was there ready to help. lt was an excellent opportuni• ty to learn about life around the world and to learn how people from other cultures live here.

The festival was very well done.

The empty ice rink was an excellent indoor setting for the celebration. The bleacherswere nice, providing seating for the stage and a place to enjoy your meal. Speaking of food, the arena smelled delicious! lt tasted great too, of course; though, the scent of the food wafting about the arena could have made anyone hungry.

There was something in it for the kids as well.A children's area featured colouring, face painting, clowns that made very Impressive balloon creatures and a bouncy castle. Most notably there was a game for which involved filling out a passport with

signatures from different cultures; If the spots were all signed the ballot could be entered to win a prize.

The only complaint about the event itself was that there were a lot of booths from companies and businesses, which were not really keeping

with the mulllcultural theme, This is a slight oversight, especially since the event wasfree and the bills had to be paid somehow.

Overall, the event was success, and will likely continue Lopromote multiculturalism In the years Locome.

nly in one artist medium can a character pogo sticking while eating oatmeal in voice class actually seem funny. TI1eatre sports is certainly one of the stranger performing arts, and Friday's show al UFV Easl by the Vancouver Theatre Sports League was no exception. 1he scenes ranged from hilariously witty to downright weird- at one point, everyone was literally laughing too hard to even hear what the performers were saying.

As could be expected, a significant amount of audience participation was involved.The audience served as a collective Drew Carey (circa Whose Line is it Anyway?), giving scene suggestions and occasionally serving as human props.

Of course, the downside to this is that Drew Carey did a much better job. Twohundred people all yelling cues resulted more often in confusion than a great scene. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the scenes were pretty funny- however, the audic;ncc was not. The audience-free performances were really the best ones, although trying to explain how looking for a Doberman with a pineapple in a gnome pub was hilarious really isn't easy. Youhad to be there.

he Reach Art Gallery in Abbotsford opened within the last year and is dedicated to preserving and showcasing arts from the different cultures represented within the Fraser Valley.On now until January 3rd, is an exhibit highlighting three different cultures brought together by a common thread (oh! She did it!) The exhibit shows textiles, and more specificallyquilts from the Salish, Mennonite and Ralli people groups. lhe Salish of the Fraser River and Vancouver Island regions take part in Sto;lo weaving, spinning, netting and sewing. In traditional times, the blankets that would be made were regarded as ptlzed, were given as gifts and even believed to possess spiritual powers.

The woven blankets were meant to show the transformation process; transformIng ordinary animal hair into an object of beauty, strength and status. In the 1920'sweaving among the Sto;lo began to disappear, but forty years later, In the 1960'sa renewed commitment to Sto;lo culture and spirituality began to emerge within the elders, and this commitment exists Lothis day.

The Mennonite culture In North America started in the 17lh century and the Mennonite women who came over were taught to quilt by the English women who were living In the colonies.

111(.~ quilting process became a way Lu express creativity and individuality. The quills were oftentimes used Loshow ap

preciation, or to raise money and awareness for missions work. The Mennonite culture is heavily Influenced by the Christian faith, and so making quilts can be seen as blessing the poor as the Bibleasks.

They are made using scrnps of fabric from old clothing; sometimes a piece uf fabric will he saved for years until the "right" project comes along.

This tradition is passed on from mother to daughter.

Although each culture Is vastly different and from various places in the world, it is inspiring to sec each one showcased alongside the other and sec the ways in which they arc diffcrcnl and also the ways in which they are similar.

All these textiles arc a hugepart of the given cultures, representing aspects of their values and spirituality; but also all made by the women of these cultures. ·111eexhibit is really hip, and the Reach Itself is a grcal venue. Tf you haven't been there yet, make a point of going. Admission is free which is not a had price for some great tirl and cultural awareness.

Of course, Improv-style the story escalated into the building of the "Mount of Para" being the cause of World War 11(and constructed by Abbotsford slaves, no less), but it really ended up being quite witty ("I shall do it twice!'' "J do thee one better- fricel").I don't blame you if you don't believeme.

In addition to the show, there was also a workshop beforehand by the leader of the troop, Michael Robinson. Robinson has taught many students (Including Cate Blanchett) and has worked with Whose Line Ts It Anyway? stars Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles, in addition to acting on stage, film and television (even appearing on Lost!). Using a variety of exercises, Robinson taught young UFV actors to think on their feet, make connections, support the other actors and, most important of all, to use their Imaginations.

Hopefully ILwon't be long unlil our own UFV students are putting on their own lmprov shows. Until then, you'll Just have to wall until next year lo catch TI1eatresports again or Just watch 1·eruns of Whose Line Is It Anyway.

aeryeung (Jae) Nam is a 46-year old South Korean artist whose work has been exhibited on three continents - North America, Asia, and Europe.

Nam studied art at Dongduc Uni• versity in Seoul, and received the 'Korean Young Artist' award in 1983, followed by the 'Korean Contemporary Art Award' in 1981, but it wasn't until 2000 that her work was shown outside of Asia, in Barcelona, at the 'Spain Embassy lnvitatlon'.

Her work has been exhibited twice at UFV, once in Abbotsford, and in Chilliwack in 2005.

According to Visual Arts Instructor Chris Friesen, Nam's latest exhibit, "A Communication Tool For Mass Media", has "brought many references and allusions to her central themes of mass media and culture ...

Nam uses [painting) to ...comment on an industry ..."

"However, It Is not newsrooms, televisions and printing processes [that] Nam is focusing on, but rather the individual expression this medium can facilitate and how it can communicate to a larger audience".

It is instantly accessible, even to those who aren't generally fans of jazz, a single repeated riff moves between instruments and is repeated throughout the piece, really tying the song together. lhe solos .are passionate and well played, making "Bright Mississippi" a warm and inviting track for get-togethers as the nights grow colder.

When you go to a certain amount of concerts (especially performances by big bands), you get used to hearing the same platitudes which you're pretty sure were the exact same thing they said to the last city. However, when Vedder took the time to state that tonight felt like the first night of the North American tour, I'd like to think that it was genuine. lt seemed that bit more truthful when Eddie took a dig at his hometown, Seattle, where they'd just played two nights. He said that the band should move to Vancouver, but then we'd turn Into a shit city In five years as welll It was said with a grin, but It seems the band were less than pleased

by the reception in their hometown.

Other cool moments included Vedder's claim that they felt like they'd won the Stanley Cup when they came out for the first encore, and also a reference to Chris Chelios, which I think must be a first at a rock concert.

Our presence behind the stage was rewarded when Vedder announced to the front that they were going to turn round to play a song for the back, at which point, everyone around us went mental, and the band launched Into a cover of "Last Kiss".

Favourites like "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" and the closing song, "Yellow Ledbetter", played with the house lights up, were met with howls of ap-

proval, but, for me, the finest track of the evening was the fifth encore, "Alive", from their first album, Ten. To say that the crowd went crazy is a gross understatement, as the clas• sic reverberated round GM Place like they'd never been away.

As the band left the stage, Eddie Vedder seemed pretty reluctant to get off, repeatedly approaching the ml• crophone to thank us once again, and tell us that they'd be back next year.

After we wove our way through the crowds outside GM Place, the general consensus between the drunk blokes and stoned students on the bus was that Pearl Jam effin' rocked.

Without booze, weed, or even nlc• otine, I had to agree.

tudded leather, skankin' and Pacific Pilsner were the underlying themes at the ska-punk show on a fall evening at Pub 340. The headliners were the Wrecktals and picking-It-up with them were the Bone Daddies and Los Furios. As all of the bands were hometown heroes, this show drew In a sizeable crowd from the get-go. It was certainly the place to be on that evening for fans of ska or punk. This show definitely set the bar high for the Wrecktals who were taking off for a tour ofBritish Columbia.

the Bone Daddies. Definitely a skaInfluenced band, their sound also contains elements ofother genres. No• tably, an organ accentuated the synco• patlons of the Bone Daddies' ska-beat while a tenor sax floated around in the background. Sometimes this tenor sax would take the lead in some blistering solos. Well-dressed in dark suits, the aesthetic of the Bone Daddies seemed a bit apart from the Pub 340 clientele. however, it did not seem to matter to the punks who were already forming a mosh pit.

Next up were Los Furlos whose high paced music got people skankb1g In little to no time. Their second song was "Ghost Town" and this crowd pleaser was a treat to see live.

TI1erels something about Los Furlos that echoes Montreal's Planet Smashers. The positive feelings oozed from the bumbling bass, guitars and horn section. This vibe was noticeably transmitted to the crowd as people really starting moving. While the vocalist chanted his lyrics it was difficult to not feed on the vibe Los Furios was laying down. Even though it was not their night to headline, Los Furios

Just about stole the show.

Last up and cranking the amps were The Wrccktals. By this point most of the crowd had bellies full of liquid courage and mosh-pit induced fervour. While the pit was not the most dangerous to ever exist, standing anywhere near the stage was not for people who don't like their spaces infrl ngcd upon. At some points during the set, Matt Moron of Abbotsford's North or Die hopped up on stage to shout into the microphone while the ska-punk thumped along. For most in the crowd.whose Inhibitions were gone, this was probably a bit fuzzy.

Probably the saddest thing about the evening was that only Los Fu• ri.os seemed to have albums for sale.

While purchasing a Los Furlos CD, the member from the Bone Daddies at the table mentioned that they would be releasing a new CD in the near future. It was very refreshing to see a venue fill up like that after seeing the way the Marltlmes treat their punk music in licensed establishments.

For fans of ska/punk, keep your eyes open for any of these bands coming to a venue near you, it will definitely be worth your time and effort.

I have, however, heard that this movie is boring. Though I disagree, I do see where these people are coming from. It was funny but not rollickingly funny. More of an understated and ironic sort of humour, which some may find dull. Also it isn't really action packed like Ocean's11;No explosions or black cat suits, Just briefcases and regular suits. Anyone who came to watch wanting to see yet another Ocean's sequel might have been dis-

appointed by this. And even the crime drama part of it isn't really keeping you on the edge of your scat; it is, again, very subtle. But this is likely because it deals with corporate crimes with none of that CSTcrap. However, because it is a funny and subtle crime

drama, it is very unique. Those who find it boring probably only Iind it so as a result of misplaced expectations, leaving the marketing of the movie to blame. If you come in with an open mind and Ignore what the commercials said, you'll probably like it.

laying fit is one of the biggest challenges as a student with a large percentage of lime spent in class, studying and at work, Regular exercise Is an essential that is too often ignored, especially for students in their early to mid-twenties who arc discovering the lack of their teenage metabolisms {now McDonalds and 7/J 1 slurpccs, believe it or not, make you fat).· For some, making the time is a challenge; for others, trying out for sports teams and working out in public gyms arc daunting.Little known

(located in University Jlouse) offers a program designed to meet these very needs.

Campus Recreation, coordinated largely by student work-studies, is cost-ellcctive, located conveniently on campus, and available to everyone. Carlos Vidal, this year's Campus Rec Manager and a fellow student, explains "people don't know that we have sports teams that you don't have lo try out for, that are co-cd and available to all students to just have fun."

The intramurals consist of a mix of students from all levels. Competition is good-spirited and the atmosphere

easy-going.

This semester there are three leagues: Indoor Soccer, 3 on 3 Basket• ball and Dodgcball. Though soccer is full, there are still spots left for basketball and dodgeball. Sign-up at Uhousc for small fee.

If you can't commit to a league, there are also one-day tournaments, such as the dodgcball tournament planned for November 21st. Yosu is offered as well on 'lhursdays from 9am-10am, $5 drop-In or $30 for IO classes.

aving the Olympics In Vancouver and Whistler next year will, if all goes well, bring a myriad of benefits to the outlying areas, not least Abbotsford.

Despite being some seventy clicks from the city, Abbotsford will be swept up by Olympic fever, which should culminate in the passage of the Olympic torch through the city on its way Loits destination at the Games. l fowevcr, there is more to Abbotsford's involvement in the Winter Olympics - the Russian figure skating team, widely regarded as the finest figure skaters in the world, and the hot favourites to scoop all three Figure Skating golds next February, will be staying in, and training in, Abbotsford.

Not only that, but one of UFV's own students and employees will be the Cummunity llost for the Russian team. Alicia Tjutjunnik, a fourth-year Communications and Business stu• dent, was picked for the illustrious position.

1he team arrives on the first of February, and will stay in Abbotsford until they make the trip to Vancouver on the seventeenth. '!hey will train at the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre.

Tjutjunnik, despite struggling with a nasty head cold, is enthused about the opportunity of rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the world of figure skating, "l am very honoured to present the Russian figure skaters ... They're coming from February 1st to 17th ...1hey have a scheduled practice at the Ab botsford Recteation Centre that will be open to the public ...also, there will be an opening ceremony where the whole community will be invited to the preview." lclor those of you out there who, like me, arc ignorant of what kind of training regimen the Russian skaters will be on, rest assured that it will be intense to say the least. "3 to 4 times a d;iy ltrniningl, each one to two hours, roughly I think they will have six to eight hours a day training." And here I was thinking that nn hour at the gym every other day was back-breaking work.

Tjuljunnik's position involves organising the team of volunteers that will chaperone the skaters, "All the volunteers who would like to help out, I will be co ordinating them. I will be the first contact for anything, and arrange any rides ...bccause [the team) might like to go shopping or watch a movie ...for each athlete there will be one vo\untcer assignccl....trying to accommodate all their 1ne~ds, andi try,

teer group." 111addition, she will be, "the translator [for the team]."

The terms of the position demand that Tjutjunnik be prepared at all hours of the day to provide her services for the team, "I will be available 21/7 for them ... it depends how much the team needs me ...because, as a community, we want to ...make them feel good and welcome thcm ...so they can get ready for the competition.We want to make sure that they're very successful."

As for the numbers, "on the team wlll be 12, plus all the trainers, nutritionists, doctors, the president of the Russia,) fedcration ...there are goir1g to be around 29 people all together.''

Due to the magnitude of the Olympics, and the intense competition between countries, the majority of the training sessions wiJI be kept under wraps from Joe Public, "l11ere's only going to be certain times that the public can watch ...and there's only going to be certain amounts of people that can watch."

After the team has left Abbots• ford, they will stay "at the Olympic Villagc ...in the Village, every country has their own house, and each country has their own parties ar)d evcr)tS going on." 'r1)e Russian team won all three Figure Skating golds at the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, and, although the team has not been fi. nalised yet, as the national selectiun process has not been finalised, one name will certainly be top of the list; that of arguably the brightest star in the Russian firmament of figure skat• ers • Evgeni Plushenko.

A~cr the 200G Winter Olympics, Plushenko left the amateur skating scene, citing that he was ''tired of skating for the benefit of the state."

However, that self-imposed exile did not last long, and the skating superstar ls once again in the mix, and, at the relatively young age of 27, will be hotly-tipped to sweep aside all competition In Vancouver.

Tjutjunnik was elated at the prospect of such world-renowned athletes coming to Abbotsford. "I'm very excited for this opporlu n it.y... and for the community and the university [to be) involved in such an amazing opportunity."

For Tjutjunnik, who was born in the former USSR (now the sovereign state of Kyrgyzstan), and currently resides In Abbotsford, the Games will present :i conflict of interest. grew up In an eastern European family, so I feel like I'm some sort of an expert on cabbage. I grew up eating cabbage rolls, cabbage soup and some weird cabbage and noodle concoction. Cabbage is a part of a healthy diet; it is low in carbohydrates and high in fiber. ll contains vitamin C, iron, magnesium, folate, vitamin A, calcium and lots of other good stuff.

However, cabbage is not a meal by Itself. l11ere is no protein in cabbage, and not enough calories to sustain a he11lthy person. Yet fur some reason, there is u diet based entirely on cabbage soup.

Back In the 1980s, somebody came up with the Cabbage Soup Diet. Since then, it has reappeared under several names. It's been called the "Sacred Hearl Diet", the ''TJ Miracle Soup Diet" and the "Russian Peasant Diet" to name a few. 1hey all have the same promise: Follow the diet for seven days, and you'll lose 10 pounds. The diet Is not meant to be a long term weight loss plan.

There arc a few problems with this plan: for one, it's impossible to lose 10 pounds of fat in a week-many doctors and dieticians assert that the weight Joss from the cabbage soup diet is just water weight, which means that the weight will be back once the diet ls finished. The cabbage soup contains a lot sodium, which will cause you to

intake, which will slow your metabolism and could actually cause you to gain weight once the diet is finished; and the diet does not contain enough oft he necessary food groups.

There are days where you cat no grains and no protein. If you lead an active lifestyle, you need protein.

A typical cabbage soup recipe contains a head of cabbage, green onions, green peppers, carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes, celery, spinach and some sort ofRoup mix. All the vegetables are chopped into bite sized pieces, placed in boiling water until they arc softened, and then the soup mix is added. l11e soup sounds healthy, because of all the vegetables, but boiling vegetables removes many vitamins. Vitamin C, for example, is water soluble. The idea is to eat the soup everyday.

On the first day of the diet, the dieter is restricted to eating Just the cabbage soup, and as much fruit as the dieter wants (except bananas). Dieters can drink only unsweetened tea and water. No milk or juice (and definitely no pop or booze).

On day two, fruit is forbidden, but leafy vegetables arc allowed. Corn, peas and beans are not allowed. 'l11e dieter is instructed to drink plenty of water, and eat the cabbage soup. For dinner, the dieter may have a baked potato with butter (but no sour cream or bacon bits).

On day three, the dieter can have everything from day one and two ex-

cept the baked potato.

Day four consists of just cabbage soup and bananas. 'lhe dieter can drink skim milk, and must drink plenty of water.

By day five, a cabbage soup dieter is supposed to have Just cabbage soup, tomatoes, and JO to 20 ounces of beef or baked skinless chicken breast. 111e only thing they are allowed to drink is water.

On day six, dieters are allowed as much beef and leafy vegetables as they want, as well as their cabbage soup.

They can only drink willer on day six. l?inally, on day seven, dieters are told to cat as much veggies, brown rice and soup as they want. They arc allowed to drink unsweetened fruit juices.

The diet is very restrictive, and it's hard to imagine anyone feeling fu II off just cabbage soup and vegetables. One plus about the diet, though, is it states that dieters must drink 8 ounces of water everyday. However, this is just good advice. Drinking plenty of water is what almost all diets recommend.

People aiming for actual weight Joss should avoid this diet altogether. it's not healthy, and even if you follow it religiously, you will not lose the 10 pounds It promises. If you're really desperate to lose weight, try Jenny Crais or Wcightwatchers. At least then you're allowed some wiggle room in your diet.

Maybe a fresh start is exactly what Cheechoo needs to get his goal scoring touch back. Michalek has had more than twenty goals in the last three seasons.

So even if Chcechoo has another mediocre season, and Michalek stays above his 20-goal average, they can potentially combine for 10 go11ls.

Heatley scored 39 for the Senators last season. So maybe th is is one of those rare trades were everyone wins.
