Harper slings mud American-style JED MINOR EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

We now know that Canada is going to endure another federal election in the · coming months along with a bill close to the $288 million spent on the 2008election.

The minority parties in parfoµnent have decided to not support the federal budget tabled by Steven Harper's government, resulting in a no-confidence vote, which is forcing the election. In reality, however, the clues that an election • was coming were apparent for all to see in the Am~rican style attack ads directed at Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff in the last couple of months.

The hardcopy style TV ads complete with grainy, slow motion close ups, and this-guy-is-a-perpetrator annoying voice overs, aim to undercut Ignatieff's reputation by quoting various seemingly unpatriotic statements that he made while living in the UK and US.The maip tagline of the ads "he didn't come back for you" implies that Ignatieff returned to Canada after living abroad for many years to claim power in the Canadian government, rather than because he was concerned about the welfare of the Canadian people.

I don't like Ignatieff any more than I like Harper as a leader.

W estJ et CEO shares secrets of success TREVOR FIK STAFF WRITER industry is one litTheteredairline with the shells of former companies that were unwilling or unable to adapt to the volatile aviation landscape. In the past century, 78 airlines have failed in Canada alone, in comparison with the 356 that have gone out of business in the United States. So how, with the industry seemingly crumbling around us, has Canadian company WestJet managed to post positive gains for 23 consecutive quarters?

Given its emergence from humble beginnings as a Canadian aviation powerhouse, WestJet's success is obvious, and on March 23 WestJet CEO Gregg Saretsky spoke to a packed house at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium to share the secrets to WestJet's success.

The presentation began with Abbotsford Mayor George Peary's introduction of Saretsky and a discussion of the hard work and dedication that the city of Abbotsford and WestJet have put in to make the partnership a resounding success. Perry credited WestJet with putting the Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) on the map, adding that the relationship formed between the airport and airline was a result of the unique approach WestJet takes to doing business which each city it works out of.

such thing as a policy at WestJet, and the company is instead run on the basis of promises. The unique culture of care established by WestJet has assured that a company that began with three airplanes flying out of six cities grew into a corporation that has the now reachable goal of flying out of 130 cities with 94 aircraft in the coming years. .

Saretsky began his presentation with a video showcasing how the corporate brass at WestJet enjoy fostering an environment of fun, while simultaneously driving home the company's motto: "owners care."

The ten minute long rap was complete with costume changes and the donning of various bling and accessories that left many of Wes~Jet's department heads clad in gear more fitting of a 50 Cent video than a boardroom. Not your typical look for a company CEO, but at WestJet it appears it is not just business as usual.

Saretsky continued the presentation by laying out WestJet's 5 keys to success, adding that they all worked together to promote an environment of "care."

The company does this through doing more surveying of employees and customers than any other airline in Canada, testing new ideas, and beginning new promotions based on consumer and employee feedback.

"Through surveying and by having a member from corporate headquarters visit each base at least a couple times a year, we listen directly to employees as they work to improve the company."

The presentation concluded with the fifth, and possibly most important value needed to sustain the current level of WestJet success.

"It ends with Fun. Fun is part of the fabric of culture at WestJet. We do this by promoting new launch destinations, incorporating family members of employees in the business, and allowing those involved within the company to freely express their needs," Saretsky said.

WestJet was born out of the idea that in order to succeed in an industry that was marred by failure, something had to be done differently. By becoming a company that was driven by values instead of policy, and by encouraging each employee to use their best judgment when dealing with issues, the once unreachable goal of becoming one of the top airlines in the world has now become more attainable than ever.

Schroeder's teasing wit had the audience laughing throughout.

The author also shared segments of his unpublished manuscript for "Motorcycle Meditations: Reflections on a Life of Motorcycling"; he cited this vehicle as a key element of the three things every rebellious Mennonite needs: a set of wheels, a girlfriend that you don't have to take to church, and access to unlimited amounts of Molson X.· Schroeder has been awarded an honorary doctorate from UFV, and has been nominated for several awards, including the 2009 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize (for "Renovating Heaven") and the Governor-General's Award.

ello, and welcome to The Cascade's Belief Column! As most of you know UFV is attended by students from a wide variety of religions and philosophies, each representing a different tradition and a different perspective on life's mysteries. In this column members of four of those perspectives-Sikhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Atheism-- attempt to respond to some of the bigger questions leveled at the religious institution.

Sikhism ikhs have a very strong belief in reincarnation. All animals including humans have a soul and our souls go through different life forms until we purify them to become one with God. Just like one changes clothes, our soul changes life forms. This very fact has been narrated by God through the Sikh Gurus. Nobody has seen what happens after death, so it is very hard for someone to understand what happens after death. The Sikh Gurus are in communion with God and they tell us that our souls have been separated from God and their dignity remains in merging back with God. Sikhism accepts the theory of Karma: man is punished or rewarded according to his actions.

Man's actions in this world will bear witness at the time of judgment. The messengers of the god of death, Yama, take the individual to the god of justice, Dharam Raj, who is very strict, like a moneylender. The scribes of Chitra and Gupta, who have written out the account, are called forth to present the balance-sheet of his or her actions. What does the balance-sheet show? It contains a record of good and evil deeds.

Sikhism believes in the immortality of the soul. The devotee has no fear of the pangs of death.

In fact a Sikh welcomes death, because it gives him a chance to merge into Divinity. The evil person, however, dreads death. For him, it will only continue the unending cycle of birth and death.

After death, man comes to the next birth according to what he deserves. If he has been wicked and evil, he takes birth in the lower species. If he has done good deeds, he takes birth in a good family.

Finally, if a person wants to end the cycle of birth then he or she has to merge with God by continuing spiritual efforts and living with the Holy Spirit.

Christianity he Bible is pretty clear on this topic. There is a happy ending, and a sad one; the choice is up to you.

As outlined in my previous articles, there is a choice facing each individual: to join in the greatest restorative work of history, or reject all that could be for the imperfection that is. Once you make the choice to join, God begins his restorative work with you and will wipe your slate clean and forgive every wrong or hurtful deed you've ever done and fill you with a peace so deep you have to experience it to believe it.

But it doesn't stop there. In fact, it's only a small beginning to the story of God's grace. You see, in the beginning of time, God created a perfect world, and actually walked and talked with the humans who lived there. After the human race decided to destroy it, God began working on another one: Heaven. He is creating a paradise unlike anything this world has ever experienced. In fact, it is perfect. (Note: Yes, there's nothing truly perfect in this world, but this paradise is "out of this world!" Literally.)

But therein lies the problem. A perfect world is incompatible with imperfect human beings. So, each of you have the choice to be purified by God by believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and died to pay your penalty so that you might live forever. Once you believe this and act on your belief, God will purify you and when you die you will be reunited with your Creator who loves you in a way beyond comprehension.

On the other hand, for those who reject perfection, they will be given their choice and live in a world completely devoid of any kind of perfection. I'd hate to imagine what that's like.

So the afterlife is essentially the result of a choice; the choice to reject death and embrace life.

Atheism have heard many people taik about many different versions of the "afterlife" that they claim exist.

Usually the story goes something like this: if you follow the rules of the ruler of the afterlife, while still in this life, you get in to the best parts of the after world. Some people will even promise you wild outlandish things, like a bunch of virgins, or meeting all your dead relatives. Why would you want to have awkward virgin-sex a bunch of times and then go meet all your relatives, who I hear are watching you when you do perverted things like that?

Some even say we will all be in the afterlife in 2012 because the world won't have an updated Mayan calendar. Not many claims can surprise me after all that, but I am surprised by how little attention is paid to the one thing that might give us a reasonable idea of what things really are like after life. How about the "before life"?

Do you remember what things were like before you were born?

Our best guess is you missed out on about 12 billion years worth of

stuff.

You and I did not exist in the least - and for all the fear generated by the prospect of simply not existing after we die, no one seems very sour on the fact that they were effectively dead since the beginning of time, until very, very recently. They are much more worried about missing out on the next mind-boggling amount of time. It's a pretty good bet that the afterlife is going to be a lot like the before life.

Still, I'm not expecting any of that to happen, anymore that I expect to one day wake up in Viking heaven. But if you are an archaeologist reading this article far in the future, and have the technology to bring me back, do it please.

UFVTheatredepartmentstealsfromstudents JENNIFER COLBOURNE STAFF WRITER f you thought the lead in this year's UFV Theatre production of Shakespeare's The Tempest seemed a little too old to be a student, you would be right.

Shockingly, not only was the role of Prospero given to a community member, but it is said he didn't even audition. Apparently the theatre department found University of the Fraser Valley actors too talentless and inept to find anyone capable of handling such an important role - what else are we supposed to assume?

For one, they certainly didn't choose this guy for his age; if anyone has read anything of The Tempest, they'd know most of the characters are the same age as Prospero. Not only does it then seem odd to have such a vastly older man on stage with twentysomethings, but it also undermines the fact that this is univer-

four adults over thirty as they did in Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, it is likely they can pull off playing a

wide range of ages. It's the magic of theatre, after all - not the realism of film.

Surprisingly, it is actually UFV policy to allow community members into UFV plays. Now, while it is true that the community is a great support to UFV theatre, it does not make sense that funds and opportunities intended for UFV students should be spent on non-students. The huge amounts of time and money poured into UFV theatre are supposedly intended for those paying tuition fees, who plan to use the practical experience of being in a theatre production toward their educational career. We already have community theatre groups as an outlet for hobby actors to have their fifteen seconds of local fame.

This isn't the first time that UFV has seen community members steal the show. Paper Wheat stands out in particular; under the auspices of celebrating 30 years of theatre, most of the production

ended up being taken over by mature non-students. Wait - we celebrated 30 years of theatre by keeping students from actually acting?

There was no need to dedicate the long, onerous second act to our self-glorified has-beens. The old actors could have just come out at the end of the show as a tribute, instead of taking things over. The effect was, like with Prospero, just weird.

It seems that UFV theatre missed the memo that we're a real university now, and no longer a tiny, struggling community college bending the rules and making do. Real university theatre programs close their productions off from non-students. Otherwise, why have university theatre at all? We wouldn't let community members play for our sports teams, submit to our literary magazine, or run for the Student Union. We shouldn't let them steal roles in our plays.

The opposition strikes: another federal election SARAH KINGSTON CONTRIBUTOR

rime Minister Stephen HarpP er dissolved Parliament on March 26 after the Conservative government was declared in contempt of Parliament. This means that on May 2 Canada will undergo its fourth general election in seven years. As a result, almost 500 bills that were in front of the House of Commons and the Senate have been killed.

These events were set in motion because the Conservative government tried to hide costs of the crime-fighting agenda and the cost of F-35 fighter jet purchases.

This is the first time in Canadian history that a government has been found in contempt of Parliament. It is the sixth non-confidence vote in Canadian history and the second in less than ten years (Paul Martin, 2005).

According to an Ipsos Reid poll endorsed by Postmedia News and Global National, the Conservative party still has 43 per cent approval among decided voters, which puts them in the running for a majority .government. Support for NDP was second but still significantly behind the Tories and the lack of Liberal support is fairly unprecedented; the poll found that almost half of Canadians believe that Ignatieff has a "hidden agenda." Nationally, this poll has a margin of error of three percentage points, 19times out of 20.

Elections Canada estimates the total cost of the 2008 General Election was $288.2million, a cost

that falls at the feet of Canadian taxpayers. If the Ispos Reid poll is correct and the Harper government maintains the support of Canadians, why are they forcing another ~lection?

Government house leader John Baird told reporters, "What they aren't telling Canadians is that this was an opposition stacked committee, who used the tyranny of the majority to get the predetermined outcome they wanted."

The Liberal motion was passed

with a vote of 156 to 145on March 25. The Conservative party holds 143 seats in the House of Commons, the Liberals hold 77, the Bloc Quebecois, 47, the NDP holds 36 seats, there· are two independent MPs and three vacant seats.

Though the vote breakdown has not been released, one can assume that all Conservatives and the two independent MPs voted against the motion and the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois voted in favor of it.

y now, it is almost clicM to complain about expensive food on campus. Yet, does anyone have a solution? I do, but let me first outline the problems that need to be addressed, as I see them.

Firstly, buying fresh fruit and veggies on campus is impossible.

The closest thing available from our friends at Sodexho in the cafeteria - and the Roadrunner Cafe - is a fruit cup or veggie platter for $4.25.What you get is about one or two servings of fruit or vegetables (one even has dip!). I mean, sure there is the convenience factor, but, as adults, do we really need to pay significantly more for baby carrots and to have our food cut up for us?

In the real world - that is, offcampus - to buy an apple or orange costs maybe $0.50each, bulk.

A banana is even less. So, unless you pick some crazy fruit that is out of season, there is no reason for fresh produce to cost so much.

Yet, at our school, a serving or two of fruit costs eight times what an apple does. All of this money leaves the campus and goes into the Sodexho corporate structure.

They can-do what they like with whatever profits they make from their operations of campus, and their fruit and veggie products are all profit margin.

However, student money is not only wasted on food in the cafeteria. Whether you go there or not, Casey's on Campus costs you money. This past fiscal year,

On the Casey's facebook page they promise that the pub returns all profits to students. Instead of making good on their promise they are taking money from the SUS that could almost certainly be better used elsewhere - more SUS scholarships would be nice.

But it is not only that Casey's is a business floundering in a sea of problems and wasting student money. As a pub for a commuter campus in a province that has increasingly harsh drinking and driving laws, Casey's has a fundamentally flawed business. Outdated, I think, is a good adjective to describe it

That said Casey's does serve a useful function as a place for students to study in relative peace and quiet on a campus that is sorely lacking in study spaces.

However, what if I could offer you a solution to all of these ·problems? Imagine: cheap, fresh, healthy food on campus, an end to the drain of Casey's on SUS funds, and a relatively silent and larger study space for students.

Here is my solution to all of these problems: a fruit stand and study space for students in the space Casey's currently occupies in the Envision Athletic centre.

Putting aside whom I believe should be in office, as long as Prime Minister Harper maintains the support of Canadians this is a pointless, costly, progress-impeding election that has killed almost 500 bills that are likely be re-submitted like others that were cut in 2006 and 2008 from elections and in 2008 and 2009 from prorogations.

All government needs to be held accountable to its constituents; however, considering the continued support of Prime Minister Harper from Canadians the end of the 40th parliament is a frivolous attempt at change and a transparent endeavor to take down a minority government. If Canadians are not displeased with Prime Minister Harper's time in office, it is possible that votes may swing to favor a majority government. As long as support for the Tory government continues the upcoming election will only be an additional unnecessary expense to the Canadian public.

It could happen! As a result, laptops are a preferred means of note taking for students today, especially those who can brag al;>outtheir words-per-minute. But due to controversy over laptops in class, our right to type our notes could be in jeop~dy; some profs have even gone so far as to ban personal computers in class, which is detrimental to a modern learning environment.

When sty.dents opt for handwritten notes, short-hand is quickly invented for greater efficiency during class, but when. looking back on those same notes, th~y sometimes seem to be written in an entirely different language.

Hand writing quickly becomes illegible and the chicken scratches on page after page of Staples notebooks taken· from innocent trees are just as easily discarded at the end of semester as the stack of parking passes piling up on the dashboard.

For exam prep, these ink covered notebooks are only useful if they are accompanied by a keen memory of each and every class and lecture. Most often, I have found; when hand-written notes are taken, the only thil).gsstudents write down are the notes the prof takes the time to write up on the board; from experience, those notes are limited to a phrase or two tha(is deemed war.thy for all to see, but have little credibility as stand-alone notes. For the profs who do use Powerpoint slideshows, students spend most of the class vigorously reading and writing rather than listening to what the professor is saying ·between the notes. As far as· Abbotsford goes, Abbotsford's sex show is hellishly "naughty." Or, at least, those are presuqi.ably the feelings of the group of Christians who protested outside the Tradex entrance. "Do It God's Way!" read· one sign, held by a self-satisfied man who smiled and waved at us as we drove in.

Apparently doing it God's way means with no sex toys or kinky outfits. I know more than a few Christian friends who would disagree, but what would Abbotsford be without a handful of extremists trying to ruin everyone else's adult and legal fun?

On the whole, though, the sex show really just hits that pe~fect "in-between," being neither too G-rated nor too XXX-rated.

There were easily as many, if not more, adults over the age of 40 at the show than under. It was largely professional and, well, mature. Hardly the den of orgies those who have tried to get it shut down probably imagine it to be.

Orrin Evans 'CaptainBlackBig Band'

In no way is Orrin Evans' Captain Black Big Band anything like the melodic swing dance big bands that typified the halcyon jazz days. Instead, it falls into the category of most modern jazz; it contains some classic elements, but is largely influenced by trends in fusion jazz. No longer for the dance halls, this kind of music is most appropriate for sipping fancy martinis in upscale bars.

Like most of the few who manage to maintain a name for themselves in the ever-shrinking elite jazz music market, Evans' music is flawless. The rhythms are tight, the dissonant harmonies are right on pitch, the solos are melodically experimental but still smoothly grooving. The musicians of Evans' big band are clearly the creme de la creme. Yet, like a lot of fusionesque jazz, none of the songs stand out distinctly; still, the album is perfect if you are throwing a classy party and are looking for a smooth blend of avant-garde background music.

Bringing together a stunning combination of sun kissed melodies, raucous post-punk guitar work, and classic girl group backing vocals, Dum Dum Girls' latest EP,He GetsMe High,is near-perfect collection of noise pop. On the standout title track, the band gets incredible mileage out of a simple three chord progression, showcasing song writer Dee Dee's enviable knack for revitalizing go-to rock and roll ·conventions and making them her own. Continuing Dum Dum Girls' tradition of ending their records with a carefully selected c~ver tune (last year's I Will Be featured Sonny and Cher's "Baby Don't Go"), a terrific rendition of The Smiths' "There Is .A Light That Never Goes Out," caps the fourteen minute collection. He Gets Me High is certainly a brief volume, but its four tracks are some of the group's finest material to date: a promising sign for their next full-length.

After years of departure from the music scene, legendary Canadian musician Robbie Robertson is set to return with his first release in thirteen years, How to Become Clairvoyant. Ol_l the. disc, Robertson strays away frQm the Native American influences of his past two albums and instead focuses on reviving the roots and blues style that he became famous for playing with the Band and the Hawks. Often, this is through the lens of a more mod~rn approach, reflected even in the album's artwork. A collaborative effort, Robertson teams up with musical allie&old and young including Eric Clapton, , Steve Winwood, Trent Reznor, Tom Morello, Robert Randolph, Rocco Deluca and Angela McCluskey. Pino Palladino and Ian Thomas make up the rhythm section the holds down the fQrt. The result is exhilarating and refreshing; a welcome return.

Keren Ann, a singer-songwriter who spends her time working in Paris, New York, and Tel Aviv.

While her name may not be immediately recognizabl~, her music has managed to permeate the• North American market. With songs on shows like Grey'sAnatomy and Six Feet' Under, she also penned the campaign song for H&M's spring line. 101 shows her comprehensive · ·abilities: the songs are soulful and eclectic, reflecting her classical training and engineering capabilities. The album itself suffers from a bit of a personality disorder ~ "Sugar Mama" is a laid-back reincarnation of a 60s surf ·song, "101" sounds like modern Whitman set to a trance soundtrack, and "Run With You" could have been yanked straight out of a classic Bond movie. At times, the lack of coherence can be frustrating; the only mood the album reflects is confusion. For those of you who embrace the teeny machines with the apple on the back, this would fit right in with your 'random' ·playlist.

Radiohead The King of Limbs

Harvey dislikes repeating herself. That's why her 8th studio release, Let England Shake, is best reviewed apart from her body of work. In fact, England stands apart from all other_ alternative rock; its aggressive beauty-in-theface-of-darkness stance takes a refreshing look at concepts of war at home and afar.

Gentle and insistent, the beats and melodies on England have .a timeless quality, as though Harvey's new sound has been steeped in a maturity that comes from the time period she is referencing. The album is about war in general and World War I in most specific instances. Harvey evokes a dreamy 60's sound, which is strongly evident on the firsf and title track that kicks the album off with an apocalyptic-sock-hop melody. The insistent and gently clanging beat, · influenced by traditional folk, is the perfect backdrop for her airy and echoing vocals.

The album, written over the cour~e of two and a half years and recorded in a 19th century church in Dorset (Harvey's home county), is a personal album that reflects Harvey's relationship with her home country - directly referenced in song titles such as "England," "Let England Shake," and "The Glorious Land." At the same time, the · album speaks about universal concepts; songs

with lyrics like "Later in the dark I 1 thought I heard Louis' voice·/ PJ HARVEY calling for his mother then me / · but I couldn't get to him" could apply to any wartime friendship.

It's clear that Harvey's intent on the album is to reference themes in a way that allows the listener to insert themselves into the songs; she wants the tone and feeling to wash over our bodies and the lyrics to ../ inform our minds with vibrant concrete images to enforce her themes. While some songs on the album reference specific battles and political decisions (including the Gallipoli campaign of World •' I War i and England's involvement ·,. ~ in the Afghanistan war), the real . ... emphasis should be placed on the .. feeling and atmosphere created by }:iarvey and her team.

sounds like a fun way to spend your time. Yet,that is exactly what a roomful of students, faculty and community members did last Thursday, March 24 and no one in attendance seemed too sad to do so, especially since the reading was by legendary BC author George Bowering. Words can be deceiving.

Bowering, the first parliamentary poet laureate of Canada, is a prolific writer with dozens of works of fiction, poetry, history, and literary criticism. In 2002, the same year he was made poet laureate, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 2004. Bowering is best known for his Avant Garde approach to all his work and inclusion as a founding member of the influential TISH magazine and group of poets that includes Fred Wah, Frank Davey, and Jamie Reid. These are just the bare bones of a prolific career that can be found on any online source.

Facebook also insists that Bowering "now spends his time trolling facebook and heckling schoolchildren from his patio." Words can be deceiving.

"A Short Sad Reading" was named so because Bowering read from his, now out-of-print novel A Short Sad Book.Neither, of course, are depressing affairs, unless you happen to be certain bird-named antagonists that Bowering lambasts throughout the book. The book's title is a nod to Gertrude Stein's A Long Gay Book.Throughout the story, told in Bowering's unique anti-narrative, the story of Canada's true secret history is unfolded. The story, of course, is entirely untrue. Words can be deceiving.

Throughout the reading, Bowering kept up a comical repartee with his audience and read well from his book. Oearly practiced in the art of speaking as well as writing, he kept the crowd at full attention. Afterwards, he accepted questions from the seats and answered them with vigour, giving attendees the chance to learn from a long time institution of the Canadian literary world. Of course, Bowering would hardly like to be associated with, let alone called

The well-attended reading was put together by UFV English professor Carl Peters, a former student of Bowering's at SFU. "A Short Sad Reading" was well attended and is yet another in a series of excellent readers that have been at UFV on behalf of the English department in the past few years including George McWhirter, Judith Copithorne, Sonnet L'Abbe, Joseph Boyden, Lionel Kearns, and two visits by bill bissett amongst many others. With events like the South Asian writers "One Book, One

UFV" and visits from CBC news correspondents and the CEO of Westjet, this is only one department's part in the growing reputation of the "small" Fraser Valley university. Words can be deceiving.

So, like Evangeline, his novels heroine, George Bowering got into his spaceship and left UFV's Abbotsford campus, but not before awakening a love of words and an encouragement to distrust the hardline "facts" of the "innocent" novel. Words can be many things.

Going to the MSA Arena to watch our boys and girls on the weekend involves seeing players and parents from all walks of life.

Nonetheless, a community is built both on and off the ice. John Wayne MacMullin, the program facilitator for MSA Ford, works towards giving back to the community as much as possible. He played a big role in successfully bringing the Drive One 4UR Community and Drive One 4UR School programs to Abbotsford. "MSA Ford has been an intrinsic part of this community for 60 years," he said.

MSA Ford also holds community fundraisers for schools throughout the Lower Mainland, donating money to events such as dry-grad, text books, and school equipment. , MacMullin has been a part of supporting Abbotsford sports pro-

grams and schools for years, with 11 more events booked in the next three months. "We involve ourselves in supporting every facet of our community that needs us, through, sponsorship, donations, fund-raisers, charity drives, gifts, assistance to transportation, [and] raffles," he said.

Having community members and companies give back to organizations that positively influence the youth of Abbotsford is refreshing for all community members to reflect on. The money raised in the Drive One 4UR Community is going not just to the championship, but to Canuck Place as well.

Watching the Abbotsford Hawks and other AMHA players is a refreshing opportunity. There are girls and boys who strive to be the best and are proud of representing their home team here in Abbotsford.

Compare the message boards on each of the official NHL team websites and you might find the Canucks' board is leaps and bounds more popular than those in most other cities. Tum your radio dial to Team 1040 and chances are good that there will be a couple of people chatting about the Canucks - if they aren't broadcasting one of their games, that is.

Maybe it's because we don't have a big NBA or MLB team, but for whatever reason, it is our favourite distraction here; the outcome of a game can change the collective mood of the entire city. But wouldn't you know it, Luongo let in a goal a few minutes later, and a significant portion of those watching were silently casting blame towards the announcers.

For some fans it goes much further. If you really want a win, wear your lucky jersey. Don't get over confident, even with a four-goal lead, until the final buzzer. Don't predict a score before a game.

Hockey fans come in all shapes and sizes, and they often come with their own set of traditions and anxiety-reducing practices.

eave it to the Australians to take a game and make it criminally violent. Aussie Rules Football is a baffling combination of soccer, rugby, basketball, and, occasionally, UFC fighting. Essentially, the goal of the game is to either carry or kick the ball between the goal posts - a classic sporting concept. Except that this sport has earned its nickname, Aussie No Rules Footy. You can do basically anything you want to get the ball across the line, or to stop the opposite team from doing so. Each team plays with 18 men on the field at a time, although they do not play so much as they engage in brutal, body-crushing warfare.

To picture a typical Aussie Rules match, imagine a good old game of American football, but subtract all the pads and steroids, and add in a different ball and a lot more hitting.

The game is played on an ovalshaped grass field, and the ball used is oval as well. Negotiating these odd angles is central to the sport; throwing the ball is not allowed, so the most efficient way to move the ball around the field is by kicking the odd-shaped ball.

The game has no offside rule, and players can be anywhere on the field even before play begins. Each match starts with a ball-up, roughly equivalent to a basketball tip off, and continues for four 20-minute stop-time quarters.

The highlight reels for the game focus almost entirely on three things: breakaways, aerial marking (or speckies), and hits.

Breakaways end up looking like a combination of football and basketball, because according to the rules, the player must bounce the ball at least once every 15 metres.

Aerial marking is when players catch kicks out of the air, often by climbing up other players. Favourite memory? This year definitely has, like coming this far has definitely been--I mean Sweet Sixte~n, and my last year has definitely been perfect. Compared to my first year where we'd play_SFU and get knocked out right away.

Anycrazy pranks?

No.

Just that he's so versatile in the way that he coaches and cares about us individuaUy. I've heard stories about players transferring from our team saying how the [new] coach, you can't go approach the coach about anything else but basketball, whereas with Al you can talk about school and your personal life. I've gone through some rough times where he's helped me thr:ough; he's pretty much my second dad.

If you had to pick a five-player UFVdream team through all the years you'veplayed, all the playersyou'veplayed with,whowouldyou pick? Withyourselfas a starting guardobviously.

ally dose to her. Our friendship has really grown. Bridget O'Brien because she's pretty much like my sister, and Tiffany Bo~well...I went to high school with her, and she played here for a couple years.· She's one of my best friends too, and I really enjoy playing with her.

Probably Sam Hill just because she's so experienced and was like the mother of our team.

Whatwasthe team'sbiggest accomplishment duringyour time at UFV? Well the years that [Al] brought in Aieisha and Ch:illiwack [recruits], these last two years. There have been so many fresh recruits who are super competitive, I mean a whole bunch of versatile players. I think it changed a lot about our program. I think the Junior Cascades program in the summer helped, because it brought in some recruits for Al. I think a lot of the players in their second year played. on the Junior Cascades program.

Just the competitiveness ...a passion ...when you're out there, I can't really explain it, but I feel connected to it. Anything else I do is not near as fun. It's just so fun playing with my team, for my team. It's really exciting to have people come watch you do something that you like to do.

mostimportantpiece of advice you'dhavefor a student comingintoUFV? Like an athlete or just anyone?

Either.

Probably for an athlete, you're not going to be able to eat whatever you want anymore (laughs).

And for a student, I don't know. I So nothingaboutdominating struggled my first year a lot with your·opponent,scoringover my courses. Staying organized is somebody,. or crossingthem important. Finding the balance between school, time, work and up? . sports I guess.

Yeah, definitely scoring threes on someone's face.
