2017-18 Thayer Calendar Art Pages

Fiona Griffin '17: I was really inspired by the art faculty who helped me during my time at Thayer, and I wanted to leave something that they could look at and remember me by. My favorite detail is the mission statement; it came out really nicely. I really like the optical illusion of walking into the tunnel.

Fiona's mural can be found in the Middle School first floor hallway.

Alex Bodio '18: I was inspired to make this because I had seen other classmates’ photos that expressed unearthly images. I had stumbled upon an image like this before and thought it would be awesome to make one of my own. This is by far my favorite photo/image I have created because of how clean it looks, with that unearthly feel.

Dan Nguyen '17: What inspired me was mandala art and the way they use colors and geometry. Mr. Branfman also got new underglazes which inspired me to play with the new and different colors that were available. I liked how this piece was originally a tester piece for the new underglazes but it turned out to be a very detailed final piece instead.

Connor Donovan '17: I was scrolling through my Instagram looking for some inspiration and came across a very old photo I had taken when I was a freshman. It was a picture of an old diner we drove past in Fall River called the "Nite Owl." It was a really bad photo, but I thought it could make an interesting painting. I wanted to draw out the beauty of that little diner.

y favorite detail is the chimney and the surrounding area. That's the M spot where my eye goes when I look at the painting. I had to rework and readjust that area a few times, but it ended up coming out really nice without looking too contrived. The highlights and shadows are soft but smooth, and the wires draping across the roof cap add to the composition.

I was inspired by a recent trip to North Captiva Island, Florida and the way the sunlight backlit a line of palm trees along the beach. I like the monochromatic color scheme of the pastel against the orange paper as it reminded me of the green trees and shrubbery against the blue sky. I think the contrast of the black and white pastels highlight the contrast of light and dark that was captured by the original picture.

For most of the year in art I was drawing angels with pastels and this was the first piece that I decided to draw the polar opposite--a demon-like figure. This was my first piece done with charcoal, and I love how it’s blacker than any other medium I have used.

Annie Kennedy '19: I love this photo I took because of the detail shown in it. The old photo is lined up with what the house is today and it shows the past compared to the present. It represents change in our lives.

Maddie Burke '21: What inspired me to make the piece is that I always feel like I am running around with my head cut off from gymnastics and school. My favorite detail of the piece is the background because it took a while to make. I really like this piece because it took me a long time to make and I am proud of it.

Claire Fideli '23: An image I saw on Pinterest inspired me to do the elephant painting. My favorite detail was the array of colors I painted with - I love rainbows! I loved the colors and I was proud of being able to draw the elephant freehand. I am so excited because this is the first time any of my art pieces have been published. I am excited to share my piece with the whole Thayer community.

Anna Kester '22: My favorite detail of the piece is the background. Although the hearts are the focal point, I like the broken look of the back. I like that my design was simple and the lines of lead were neat and didn't clutter the glass.

Conor Walsh '22: On cold nights near Christmas, my family and I make a fire and sit by it in our living room. I liked how in my piece all the colors in the flame made it seem like there was heat. I wanted to represent this warm happy moment in my stained glass, as it was a present for my parents.

Mike McHugh '22: This is a picture of my dog Casey. I like that every time I saw the picture in class it reminded me of him and made me smile.

My favorite part are the ears - I think they look just like his ears in real life.

Felice Cabral '17: I drew this piece when I needed to relieve some of the stress from junior year. When I draw these black & white zentangles, I just go in whatever direction that my marker takes me. I love them because whatever is on my mind gets translated into art and put onto paper.

My favorite detail is the stems because the greens matched with the flowers and their bright colors very well. I like my choice of colors and how they look nice together.

I was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's sunflower paintings and how each flower had its own unique personality. I tried to keep that vibe while creating my piece using very vibrant colors. To add my own special touch I used a rustic tin can instead of a honey jar.

My favorite part of the painting would either be the way I made the vase or the flowers. I outlined the vase and put spots inside, and I also made lots of the flowers with vibrant colors and made sure that some flowers differed from others.

Lucy Relaford '18: Most of my fashion illustration pieces are inspired by my experiences or everyday things; for example, the wilting hydrangeas or San Francisco which inspired two of these pieces. I enjoy working in watercolor because it is versatile and easy to create different textures and patterns with.

Jack Healey '17: I was thinking back to when I did art in preschool and when we put marbles in paint and then moved the canvas around so the marbles would move. There weren't any thoughts going through my head besides the fact that I wanted the paintings to have a 'random' vibe to them.

Christian Ciffolillo '17: I was inspired to make this sculpture of a fish because of my passion for fishing. I spend a large portion of my free time fishing and it’s become a very important pasttime for me. What makes this piece so special is that it's a rainbow trout, a fish that’s a challenge for me to catch. My favorite detail is the distinct pink stripe that makes the rainbow trout so beautiful and unique. This was by far my favorite piece of art I made in my three years of taking pottery.

Callie Habegger '19: Let me just say that pastels are tough to work with.

Having had little experience with this medium, I'm all around happy with my creation. My favorite detail is the white, wispy lines rolling off of the sand dune's edge and into the sky.

Alexandra Rooney '17: (L) I like this swirling rim style, I've done it on many of my pots. It reminds me that it's ok for things not to be perfect. I was inspired to glaze in simple brush strokes from my teacher, Branf.

(R) This pot was completely inspired by Branf. He works with raku and likes to use texture to affect the way the glaze sits on the pot which is what I did here. The uneven rim also gives you the complete feeling that goes along with the texture.
