By analysing the impact of the sun on a site, as well as the building’s location, the spatial arrengement, orientation,

and

other design features, I can take full advantage of passive solar design features and increase the energy efficiency, comfort and financial value of the building.

Being located in Boston, we have to take in account both the heat of summer and cold of winter. Shade is needed in summer and sun is desirable in winter.

Site Analysis B-3-65, 149 Newbury St Boston, MA 02116 SUN PATH Assessing the passage of sun accross the site is important. A sun path diagram can help establish the position of the sun relative to a site and can be used to determine the effect of shadows cast by buildings, trees and landforms on and around the site.

In order to utilize effective passive solar design features on these sites, we need to take careful consideration of the building design including the location. (e.g. locate as high as possible on the site), orientation and use of skylights, clerestories can maximize the benefits of solar access.

Fun fact, each additional hour of direct sunlight exposure for a house per day, averaged across the year, added 2.4% to its market value. 1 WIND The prevailing wind direction must be considered in relation to the design of a building, in particular, for locations of doors and opening windows, and provision of shelter for outdoor areas. According to, bracing requirements must be calculated separately for both lateral wind loads and earthquake loadings; the bracing must be designed for the greater of the two loads.

PROGRAM Building heights surrounding the site will affect wind affect wind speed and daylighting. Wind speed is lower when a site is surrounded by taller buildings. Also, wind speed will increase where it funnels around or between buildings. The higher the building, the more exposed it will be to higher winds, particularly where the building is taller than adjacent buildings or vegetation.

is slowed by trees and vegetation. Plants, trees and landscape features provide shade and wind shelter, help with stormwater and erosion control, provide a habitat for native or other wildlife and can make a site more attractive.

Site Considerations

When assessing the existing topography and vegetation of a site, considerations include: - access to winter sun - the amount of shading required - provision of shelter from strong, cold winds - enhancement of cooling breezes - privacy - existing biodiversity - planted species – native or introduced - age of the existing planting

Plants as a passive design tool

Plants and trees can assist the passive design of buildings by: - providing shade - funnelling breezes where cooling is required - providing shelter from intrusive winds - reducing glare by filtering summer sun - having species that let in winter sun during cooler weather.

RAIN The amount of rainfall on a site will affect aspects of a building design, such as roof form, flashings, stormwater drainage ect. In Boston, months with the largest precipitation are March, December, November with 289 mm precipitation.

The annual amount of precipitation in Boston is 1057 mm but, a building design should be able to cope with the maximum expected rainfall.

Being part of the growth endeavor of a brand such as William Grant & Sons was an exciting prospect for Design Plus Architects. The brief was in-sync with their company’s values of pride, responsibility, professionalism, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. These values were not necessarily imbibed as metaphors but were also prevalent in an objective requirement - of several small meeting rooms, semiformal discussion zones, well-lit interiors, a possible gathering of 70+ people for a town hall, proverbial open office; essentially a lively and happy working environment.

The Music school is for students from Pre-K to middle school with about 150 students. The cafetorium includes a 200 seats performance hall and a 66 seats cafeteria, tables included. Furthermore, it includes practice rooms, classrooms, science labs, dance studios on the south facing

side,

mechanical

space,

restrooms, elevators and shaft on the north facing walls. The library is located at the last floor.

- The cafetorioum is at the heart of the building, like a spine who connects the building at every level, from the basement to the 3rd floor. The performance hall extends with an atrium at level IV and V which will act like a skylight to bring natural light throughout the building.

My space is designed to have a heart. Its purpose is to impact people in a positive way, tobring people together, to create interaction and community. It is a school designed to promote togetherness and interaction. To help people learn from each other and be more friendly. To help them feel more comfortable with one another and themselves. To help increase interaction between people, the building will have more bridges between its spaces.

Visible throughout the atrium is a central performance hall that acts as a connective spine between all five floors.

The concentric rings, inspired by the Steward Gardner Museum auditorium, spiral upward and become a central gathering point at each floor landing. Clean lines, timeless materials, and local products are core to this New England design.

The auditorium is enclosed by operable walls, nanawalls, to facilitate flexibility within the space.

The cafetorium

is a flexible room sharing both the cafeteria and the auditorium. It is placed at the center of the school to facilitate interaction and sociability.

It is compacted in order to save space and be more economical. The cafeteria can contain up to 66 people at the time. In a school of 120 students, two lunch sessions will be necessary for everyone to fit.

The ground floor

is the moment where the user makes a direct transition from the exterior to the performance space.

Upon checkinf in at the reception desk on drops off their items in the vestibule or coat room.

FOURTH LEVEL -

The fourth and

fifth level houses the library. The library is a space of contemplation and focus, so it is place in the highest floors for maximum privacy.

The library is penetrated by a doubled height atrium that let the natural light enter the space. Both the central atrium and the elevated glazed walls provides a great view to the city and create ambiguity from interior to exterior. And that’s an interesting moment for the user.

storage room to temporarily store the auditorium chairs when needed and add malleability to the space.

The central auditorium is extended by the doubled floor atrium to create the ‘Heart’ of the building.

This system acts as a connective spine that connects each floor landing from the basement to the last, thus brings them together.

Structural Systems My structure is a simple grid. It responds to the scale of the main program elements and to the ortagonal organisation of the buils form of Newbury St and in the Backbay.

STRUCTURE = STEEL -

A steel structure will be used for the school, as it is faster and cheaper.

Steel is 60% lighter meaning cheaper foundations too. The site has ground water and bad soils, that’s why piles
