BUTTERFLY BIOSPHERE Butterfly Biosphere opened to the public in January 2019 as Thanksgiving Point’s fifth venue, and is the first of its kind in Utah as a USDA certified building. Butterfly Biosphere is located in the Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Building Honoring Hilda Ruth Harrell. The Conservatory, the largest in North America, is a year-round nature experience in a real rainforest environment and features 10,000 square feet housing thousands of butterflies from around the world. Guests coming and going from the Conservatory are checked for “butterfly hitchhikers” inside a special, magnetically sealed vestibule for biosecurity. Guests learn about the life cycle of the butterfly, from chrysalis to maturity. Guests may release a newly hatched butterfly inside the Conservatory and get up close to these fascinating animals. Throughout the Biosphere are interactive exhibits, terrariums, and dozens of insects, spiders, and other invertebrates from across the globe. These displays are regularly changed, so guests can meet new species each visit. Children’s activity play areas include the Costa Rica Climber, a 7,000 square foot area. The Discovery Zone includes daily “Hold a Critter” shows and a Bee classroom featuring a live Eastern Honeybee hive. New in 2020 is the Leafcutter Ant Exhibit featuring animals from Trinidad. Guests observe nearly 65,000 ants farming as a colony to create and maintain their home.
