(RE-MODELED) RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
STUDHORSE OLSON KUNDIG COURSE GOALS / LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Revit course taken to complete this project enabled me to understand and explore architecture within digital practice, to understand the role of graphic communication in professional practice, and how the use of BIM is redefining the scope and scale of professional services. The course examined the relationship between the scale of design and the scale of representation and how this relationship undermines abstract representation in design. The course sought to explore the boundaries of BIM and its ability to visualize and communicate three dimensional space between consultant team and client teams, understand the concepts and techniques of digital modeling, and explore design opportunities in digital media in all phases of professional services. The course is designed to develop a working knowledge and strong foundation in BIM and a general understanding of the design principles, legal, and technical applications of this type of digital practice. It successfully developed critical thinking in digital terms that has provided me with the problem solving and creative thinking skills required to pursue professional practice. The implicit objective throughout the course was to impress concepts so that we could develop our own design methodology and process within the digital realm. REVIT

SUSTAINABAL DESIGN DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE CITIES SHINING LIGHT ON SUSTAINABILITY IN A CONTEMPORARY SETTING
Ascend four flights into an exhibition space that allows visitors to explore spec ific topics of sustainability. This contemporary space serves as an educational experience that aims to enlighten the community regarding the realm of sustainabili ty. Small lecture rooms provide a setting fit for discussion, debate and the exc hange of information. Classrooms serve local students and Baltimore city dwellers, providing an oasis for workshops, group activities, discussions, and community serv ice projects. Office spaces bring a diverse network of individuals, with backg rounds in community outreach, marketing, sustainability, and architecture, giving them room to gather and provide resources for the community. The buildi ng flaunts a round exhibition space that resembles the curvature of the sun. the surrounding program takes its form from the hierarchical exhibition space. Important spaces in the program are extruded from the building's interior, symboli zing the unorthodox nature of mankind's relationship with the natural environment. the goal of the building is to restore a mutualistic relationship between the natu ral and built environment. The building stand as a prototype for the future urban development regarding sustainability. “In-Light” boasts an outdoor green wall that is visible from the inside of the southern sectors. The wall is a direct product of our re- duced energy cost, acting as an extra layer of insulation. The green wall also blocks high frequency sound, offering a serene study space on all upper levels of the building. On the roof of the building sits four solar panels, which are transparent, allowing sunlight to enter the exhibition space. Lastly, the exter ior of the building is covered in fritted glass encased by wooden operable louvers. SKETCH-UP | PHOTOSHOP

TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR ARTISTS
BALUARDO DELLA GINERVA VIA DI BELVEDERE, FLORENCE, METROPOLITAN CITY OF FLORENCE, ITALY
The objective is to design a living and working space for artists to reside in for 6 months at a time. The complex will be a collaborative space, shared by all artists and open to the public to showcase the art created. The pre-existing site offers views of Florence's Tuscan landscape and River Arno and is completely clear for the construction and integration of this new complex. While paying homage to its history, dating back to the year 800, the site's original walls are the primary element connecting the new design to the site's previous use as a fortification demonstrating Florence's wealth and defense capabilities. A place that was once home to troops almost 100 years after its creation, is sought to be redeveloped into a nurturing residence and work-shop for talented artists. "Nel Mezzo" is a space that captures the collaborative vibrations of the artist and the elongated landscape created by its distance from the busy city center. The artists who reside here are naturally lured to the middle of the estate, where a generously spacious studio awaits them, giving them and their creations the opportunity to take center stage. The space is abundant in greenery, natural light, and scenic moments. Spaces around the studio are nurturing and calming, with courtyards to connect residents and visitors to the natural environment, and art pieces that serve as highlights of their varied talents. Altogether they are combined to create the perfect atmosphere for living, working, and collaborating. AUTOCAD | SKETCH-UP | HAND-DRAWING

COMMERCIAL DESIGN STORE-FRONT | FACADE DESIGN CONNECTICUT AVE NW, DC
This project dealt with the design of the vertical surface of a building in context. I was instructed to design a new façade for an infill space in Dupont Circle (near the metro). The current façade was to be demolished and my new proposal would replace the old and stark façade. Compositional concerns, as well as those of character, iconography, and symbolism, were to be addressed. Issues of proportion, scale, light/shade/shadow, abstraction, representation, and construction were to be studied. GOALS: To understand basic façade compositional strategies for the infill type To understand basic façade strategies needed for a storefront design: what’s revealed, what’s hidden, and in-between? To understand the relationship between compositional strategy and tectonic type To understand and be able to manipulate ideas of the program as they relate to the façade To develop analytical and graphic techniques to enhance my understanding and representation of the façade To manipulate architectural elements and compositions as they relate to iconographic and symbolic intentions, scale and proportions, and notions of public, private & civic activities To investigate the role of the façade both in the city and on the street, sidewalk, etc. SKETCH-UP | AUTOCAD

PAVILION DESIGN
ORDERING SYSTEMS & SPATIAL SEQUENCE
USE 1-2 OF THE FOLLOWING 4 THEMES:
CEREMONY, RITUAL, CONTEMPLATION, DIALOGUE, and TENSION. I was instructed to concentrate on creating a narrative as I composed the spaces and their sequencing. I was also instructed to explore each theme at least once. This allowed me to be selective about which ideas to develop and clarify the overall thought process. I had to start by recording the definitions of each word along with my own interpretations of them. The theme (concept) was meant to provide a foundation for the design. Throughout the design process, I was expected to establish spatial order and spatial hierarchy. I also had to consider the movement of sunlight, the use of the materials, and the relationship between the parts to each other and to the whole.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING DESIGN
URBAN SPA & CAFE CONSTITUTION AVE, NW D.C.
This project is a multi-level, commercial in-fill building that will be transformed into an urban spa and cafe. Nestled within a vibrant parcel, the building is adjacent to R street NW with 19th street NW on the opposite corridor. The building faces the hustle and bustle of Constitution Ave, NW, serving as an organic tool for foot-traffic. The appropriate use of vertical square footage, party walls, and rear entry ways for loading products and supplies are a few of the objectives for this kind of design. Creating space for mechanical systems, and ADA approved wash rooms are also essential to this design process. Because this is an infill project, strategically filtering natural light throughout the building will be yet another challenge. For this project, the physical model is to be built in section to portray that this building is an in-fill project. DC is known for it's cultural diversity and inclusiveness, it's historical landmarks, and it's abundance of retail shop selections, ranging from luxury to fast fashion and fast food to fine-dining. This urban cafe and spa has to stand out to the DC demographic, which tends to consist of about 25 million tourists a year.

GARDEN DESIGN
A PLACE FOR YOUR PAST TIME REMEDY GARDEN
The main program was meant to focus on my personal interest or pastime, such as reading, drawing, music (listening or playing), dancing, writing, and board games. Here, visitors with similar interests would be able to share ideas and collaborate. The building’s sequence (entrance and exiting) was expected to flow naturally with the garden’s circulation. The building’s maximum capacity was expected to be ten (10) people at any given moment. Objective: T he project focused on the following design issues: The relation between the existing object and the proposed transformation The experience of the interior space The relations between semi-public and public spaces The architectural composition and stair resolution The creation of spaces and sequential events The structural framework Façade design (thresholds) Rooftop design

THE ABSTRACTED CUBE PLAYFUL PEAKS
For the given project, the client has not yet developed a specific program but is looking for my direction in developing a clear logic for the formal development of the abstracted cube. The final structure would contain larger spaces for group gatherings (group instruction, watching movies, etc...), medium-sized spaces for smaller group gatherings (game playing, study groups, etc...), and a few smaller, more intimate spaces (intended for individuals to relax, study or finish homework).
