Horse department members Susan Hardenbergh, Lori Schryver, and Kristen Finch will lead eight people for an overnight experience to Patton’s Cabin, The Thacher School’s cozy nook in the Sespe Wilderness. The group will take an easy 45-minute hike to the cabin where you can ride horses, hike, swim, read under the big sycamores, and sleep under the stars (horses will be available for trail rides). You will be fed a hearty and delicious dinner that night (bring your own wine), and breakfast and lunch the next day.

Restrictions: A mutually agreeable weekend will do: visit for next year’s Senior Ex Weekend and depart for the Sespe after the festivities on Saturday afternoon, or when your seniors take off after graduation. Expires 6/30/2014.

This trip is the ultimate backcountry trip for mountain bikers: long steady climbs with views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands, technical single-track descents through remote canyons and a night of camping, good food and camaraderie without having to carry any camping gear on your bike. Join Brian Pidduck CdeP 1992 and Weston Richardson CdeP 1980 (parent of Jack ‘15) on an overnight mountain bike trip from Ojai to Patton’s Cabin in the Sespe on the Friday before Winter Alumni Weekend (January 10-11, 2014). Gear and food will be packed into Patton’s and be waiting for your arrival. At Patton’s we will enjoy a Bar-B-Que and relax in the rustic comfort of the cabin and revel in the beauty of a night in the Sespe. On the following day you can chose to ride back over Nordhoff Ridge and enjoy a thrilling descent of Gridley Canyon or drive back to Ojai from the Piedra Blanca Trailhead (a short distance from Patton’s Cabin). There are multiple routes for approaching Patton’s Cabin from Thacher. We will choose the appropriate route based upon the level of experience of the riders. That being said, this trip is best suited for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers.

Restrictions: Maximum of 6 riders. Trip will be Friday before Winter Alumni Weekend, January 10-11, 2014. Bikes will not be provided but can be rented from local bike shops. Brian and Weston can answer questions about appropriate gear, bikes and clothing for the trip. In addition, we will have first aid kit and tool kit for maintenance on the trail.

4. A Whydaho Summer Day of Guided Fly-Fishing and Overnight Stay

Enjoy a private tour of the Los Angeles area studio of Johannes Girardoni followed by lunch. Johannes Girardoni CdeP 1985 (parent of Julia ‘15) is an American-based sculptor and installation artist. Girardoni is best known for his reductive investigations at the intersection of sculpture and painting, through which he explores the continuously shifting relationship between reality and image. Among Girardoni’s recent works are site-specific sculptures and installations that blur the boundary between the disciplines of architecture and sculpture, re-orchestrate the “materials” of light and sound, and manipulate presence and representation.

Tiki rode a wave of popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s marked by the entrance of Hawaii as the 50th state in 1959 and the introduction of Tiki hut bars and restaurants around the continental U.S. The mid-1990s saw the beginning of a revival of the Tiki culture. Several books on the subject of Tiki kitsch have been published, including The Book of Tiki by Sven Kirsten.

Take a scenic ride through the Ojai Valley with Thacher parents, students, teachers, staff, alumni and friends. Mix in volunteers serving up snacks and a hot meal after the ride. Throw in some media hype and you are riding in the energy of a fondo, a friendly cycling tradition from Italy.

Some cyclists ride for the satisfaction and pride of just making it to the finish line. Others enjoy the camaraderie of riding with friends and family. All energy levels are welcome. 901. LA Thacher Moms Hike and Lunch Series

Join us for two spectacular hikes in the LA area during the school year.

You’ll explore new (or maybe familiar) hiking trails, enjoy a delicious lunch, and spend time with other Thacher mothers. The Eagle Rock Hike is in Topanga State Park, up to the amazing vistas at the top of Eagle Rock. We will likely see deer, squirrels, rabbits, and there is great birding. The Santa Monica area will be the venue for the second hike.

Count Me In! 902. Bay Area Thacher Moms Hike and Lunch Series

This is a fun opportunity to enjoy a series of beautiful hikes, eat a delicious lunch, and get to know more of your fellow Thacher Moms! This year will feature four hikes in the series, to be scheduled throughout the school year. Hiking locations include the lovely wooded costal range of Woodside, the dramatic trails of Mt. Tam, a Point Reyes excursion, and an exploration of the headlands of San Francisco. Each hike includes lunch, whether in the host’s house, a picnic along the trail or in a nearby restaurant. All you need is a good pair of hiking sneakers and a water bottle.

903. Run or Hike the Dipsea, Followed by Lunch at Stinson Beach

Meet in Old Mill Park in Mill Valley, at the start to the famous seven-mile Dipsea Trail, to experience a morning following the trail and scaling its many stairways through the verdant redwoods of the North Bay. Climb Cardiac Hill to take in panoramic coastline views. Then head down toward Stinson to enjoy a group picnic at the beach. Your leaders are Thacher alumni Morgan Smith (CdeP ‘85) and Sarah Lavender Smith (CdeP ‘86), parents of Colly ‘16. Both are avid trail runners who love to do the Dipsea.

When: Sunday, September 22, 2013. Morgan will start with the hikers at 8:30 a.m. Sarah will head out with the runners about 45 minutes later.

They will make sure that no one gets left behind. The whole group will finish around the same time and enjoy a catered box lunch at the park next to the beach. This is a Count-Me-In item, and must be purchased at the price listed. $180 per person (includes lunch and transportation).

Restrictions: This is a strenuous trail with approx. 2,200 feet of elevation gain and loss from start to end. You should be able to hike briskly or run at least five miles in order to take part in this outing.
