A Message from our Artistic Director People say that theatre is a family. It's true!

This season could not represent that statement more. In all of our shows the characters are close friends who become like a family, they may be strangers and are brought together through an event, or they were already family members who are moved closer to one another. No matter the show this season, you'll get a sense of family.

It could be onstage with the characters or off stage with the actors. When you spend weeks with a group of people working toward a common goal, you form a little show family. Those people are important to you because they will be by your side through the production.

TGRC is a place where relationships are formed and they grow stronger with each show. Get on stage with us, be a part backstage, or be in the audience.

No matter what, you're not just a friend, but you are our TGRC family.

Casting Shows We would like to take a moment to explain how individuals are cast to perform at the Theatre Guild of Rockingham County. Please understand that the Guild's number one goal for each performance is to create the best show possible.

The hiring of the production staff which includes the director, stage manager, musical director, and choreographer is the first step in the casting process. Ultimately, the production team collaborates to make all casting decisions. The Guild does not pre-cast shows and encourages directors to consider non-traditional casting options based on available auditionees.

Directors have to visualize everything that goes into making a show come to life. How well one fits into the director's vision will play a major role casting a particular show. Acting, singing, and dancing are not the only factors directors consider. Looks, age, height, and similarities among those auditioning are taken into consideration, too. Even the best actor may not be cast in a show because they do not fit the vision the director has for a particular role or for the show as a whole.

Many times, maturing actors transitioning from youth shows to full productions may find themselves faced with an entirely different set of challenges when auditioning with more experienced individuals.

Cultivating young talent and helping them with these adjustments is one of The Guild's primary goals.

We hope this information has provided a better understanding of The Guild's casting process and encouraged new faces to audition.

The Nail: Joining our past to our future...

Historically, many actors consider a bent nail from the stage a good luck piece. TGRC's Bent Nail tradition started when tow bent nails from the stage of Peter Pan (1998) were welded together.

Since that time, the nail has been passed from show to show, when each director selects a cast or staff member to wear the charm during the performances. Receiving the nail is a very special honor within TGRC and the announcement of the recipient is eagerly anticipated by every member of the production.
