Hawaiians were able to enjoy a quality lifestyle filled with abundance. The Holo Holo Pono Pledge was created in hopes of inspiring people to make a promise to respect the aina (land), kai (sea) and Hawaiian traditions that are alive today. It is an oath to ensure you get the most out of your time on Kaua‘i; to create memories and have experiences, while keeping you and your loved ones safe, all while preserving the natural beauty, unique history and rich resources of the island. Inspired by Olof Yrr Atladottir formally of the Icelandic Tourist Board, who visited Kaua‘i to share her take on responsible tourism, the Holo Holo Pono Pledge was created by Holo Holo Charters, a boat tour company offering daily adventures to the Napali Coast and Ni‘ihau, two authentic Hawaiian historical destinations. As a locally-owned company, Holo Holo Charters felt it was

their kuleana (responsibility) to do their part in giving the visitors the experiences they seek, while helping to preserve the destination both environmentally and culturally for the people, plants and animals who live on the island and inhabit the waters. The Holo Holo Pono Pledge focuses on Na Waiwai (Hawaiian treasured values), given to the Hawaiians by their ancestors who first voyaged to Kaua‘i and understood the importance of a sustainable lifestyle. Holo Holo Charters believes it’s not enough to just make people aware of reducing plastic usage, so it doesn’t end up in our ocean, or encouraging people to use only non-toxic, reef-safe sunscreens to protect the sea life, but wanted to tie in their pledge as a promise to the Hawaiian people and culture. Let’s be honest, taking a pledge is not the most obvious way to start your vacation, however the little effort given is

greatly rewarded. Getting into the mindset of being a responsible traveler will open many doors and allow you to maximize your adventures. Shop locally, adapt to “Hawaiian time” and interact with residents who have the best tips on things to see and do as they are truly passionate and proud of their homeland. The topics in the pledge carry such an important message about the quality of life on Kaua‘i and other respective Hawai‘i destinations. The benefits of having a deeper connection to the island and its people are priceless and will remain with you for a lifetime. That’s the win-win of the responsible traveler! Will you embrace these values and hold a special place in your heart for Kaua‘i, to malama (to care for and nurture) her by taking the Holo Holo Pono Pledge?
