He’s directing “A Winter Concert” by the Chamber Music Kauai this weekend. Performances are set for 7 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. Both concerts are free and are at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue. Shepherd founded the group that spe-

Studies, he said, have shown the uplifting effect of that type of music. “I wanted to make that a kind of a mission because it’s such beautiful and positive music,” he said. The Kauai Community College professor said he wanted to counter “the negative stuff ” that he believes permeates today’s popular culture. ‘I think it can be toxic, especially for young people, to be exposed to that,” he said.

She said the concert will be a great way of welcoming Christmas and listening to classics, “which we don’t hear much anymore.” And for sure the audience will not leave disappointed. “You’ll go away with that Christmasy feeling,” she said.

A Winter Concert will be the opposite. Bad vibes must be left outside the doors. “This is so uplifting and it’s nourishing for the heart and soul,” Shepherd said. The 30-member group includes a chorus and orchestra. Monica Chung is the accompanist. The show will open with three dances from “Terpischore” arranged by Shepherd. It will be followed by performances of different music, including “Eternal Source of Light Divine,” by G.F. Handle, “Brandenburg Concerto No. 2” in F Major by J.S. Bach, and “Dona nobis pacem,” also by Bach.

“The Bethlehem Star” written by Shepherd will also be performed by Chamber Music Kauai. Mary Jean Abigania, a soprano, and Tia Lardizabal, an alto, are both part of the group for the first time this year. Abigania said she’s a busy mom who still wanted to join because the music they play is relaxing, “not like the busyness of the coming holidays.” “We’re not just a group. We trust each other, we work well together, we blend together,” she said.

The idea of opening up a Coconut’s Fish Café franchise came from visiting the flagship restaurant on Maui, where Fisher said he had the best fish and chips of his life. “I have fish and chips at a lot of places. It’s a quick, easy thing to order and I’ve always been disappointed, but these are different,” Fisher said. Light and fresh — enough food to give you energy for that surf sesh, but not heavy enough to put you to sleep; that’s how the pair describe pretty much everything on the menu. “The chowder is an exception, and it’s really popular,” Wood said. The blackened mahi sandwich is Fisher’s second favorite from the menu and that’s listed among other fish sandwiches like grilled ono ($12.99), seared ahi ($14.99), and the faithful hamburger ($11.49).

Tacos are served on two white corn tortillas and the restaurant offers 17 different ingredients as toppings, including coleslaw and mango salsa, for between $12.99 and $14.49. A keiki menu, vegetarian and gluten free options, poke bowls, salads and pupus fill in the rest of Coconut’s Fish Café’s options. In 2009, the first Coconut’s Fish Cafe opened in Maui, and Wood and Fisher said founder, Michael Phillips, joined them on Kauai when they were shopping for locations. “He started the first one just because he wanted a place that had good food that was consistent, at a good price,” Fisher said. “He wasn’t planning on franchising, but it exploded and now we’re the eighth.” Coconut’s Fish Café is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is at 4-831 Kuhio Highway.

It’s not necessarily a Christmas event but it does have spiritual elements. Music should have a sense of deep joy and peace, he said. “I think that’s a huge component of music,” Shepherd said. “Those things are so important and they’re really not emphasized enough,” he said. “Everything is too commercial. That element is so in danger of being lost in our culture. Come to our concert if you want to feel it.”

Ori Uvira opened the event with a cultural presentation followed by a special canine presentation featuring designs from Petco, Barkaroo Bakery and Kids, Cats and Canines. This opened an afternoon of shows featuring notable designers from Kauai and off-island as Ori Uvira combined a contemporary Polynesian dance number with contemporary Polynesian fashion. Joseph Figaroa, president of the Hawaii Fashion Week, served as the day’s host at the event which was sponsored by The Figaroa Collection, Koloa Landing Resort, World Fashion Bank, Ralph Malani of Honolulu, A Touch of Glass, and Da Shop located in Port Allen.
