ashion influencers are a more recent addition to today’s lifestyle, and Joelle Souza of Omao is one of them. Married to Sheldon Souza, a bull rider on the rodeo circuit, Joelle and her daughters, Savannah and Montana, recently moved back to Omao from the Mainland, where she earned her “fashion influencer” title for posting blogs about Western wear. “I was inspired after going to rodeo with Sheldon,” Joelle said. “Rodeo is super dangerous, and I would get super dressed up because you just never know what’s going to happen. I do it for Sheldon.” Joelle and her family are involved in both the Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo and the Sunset Ho‘olaule‘a that will open the 2018 edition

princess crowns,” Joelle said. “Sheldon is a bull rider, and he wants the buckle for that event.” The crowning of the 19th annual rodeo queen and princess is one of the new facets for the three-day rodeo that takes place at the CJM Country Stables, about a mile past the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Poipu. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 20 for the first Friday Night Bash where ropers in high dollar roping 5 will be in the arena along with bull riders attempting to make the eight-second whistle, and women riding in the first go of wahine barrel racing. Outside the arena, music from Not My First Rodeo will tease dancers “until the cows come home.” Admission is charged on all three days. “Joelle bought me this shirt for my birthday,”

Sheldon said, using his denim jacket to ward off the approaching rains. “But my birthday is still a ways away. It’s nice, but not my birthday yet.” Pa‘u riders in traditional lei will be escorted by defending rodeo buckle holders Saturday, July 21, during the grand entry, opening a day filled with more action as paniolo compete for some of the $38,000 purse during Hawaiian heritage day. July 22 closes the threeday series with a family and fun day that includes pony rides, a petting zoo, carnival games, and keiki rodeo events including junior bull riding, barrel racing, sheep riding and stick horse reach roping. Champions from the three days of competition will emerge from the arena dust in roping, bull riding, and this year’s wild cow-milking contest, and Hawaii’s unique double mugging after gates open at 10:30 a.m. “Joyce Miranda has

been working hard on this rodeo,” said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack, Koloa Plantation Days events coordinator. “She’s come up with a lot of new facets to this already popular family event.” Under the Koloa Plantation Days overall theme of Landmarks in Time, Joelle takes the spotlight July 21 during the free Sunset Ho‘olaule‘a and festival opening that takes place at the Poipu Beach Athletic Club from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with support from Kimes Ranch and Ariat. Known as “The Aloha Cowgirl,” Joelle, who has been invited to participate in the Denim and Velvet Dec. 9 show during the Wranglers National Finals Rodeo at Stetson Country Christmas in Las Vegas, will be on stage with Brian Doty from “This is Country TV” to present the first Western fashion show. “Brian is flying here from Texas especially for the show,” Joelle said. “The show is just part of

Rayna Shafter, 13, who is playing the title role of Belle in Hawaii Children’s Theatre’s production of “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” This enchanting production has all of the elements of the full-length Broadway show and Disney movie, in a condensed form, said director Rebecca Hanson. “All of the memorable songs are in there. The three everyone will remember are “Be Our Guest,” “Something There,” and “Beauty and the Beast” and the song “Belle” is in the beginning of the show,” she said. Some of the actors have more than one part. As part of the Summer Stars program, each of the 62 child participants are cast in either ensemble or principal roles. By opening night, the children will have been rehearsing for six weeks. “It’s a really fun experience and everybody’s so close and it’s fun to be with the little kids and to get more experience and to help others too,” Shafter said. Acting is an important part of Shafter’s life. It’s something she’s been doing since she was seven years old. “It’s my passion, it’s what I love to do. It also helps me work as a person, becoming a better version of myself. When I’m reflecting as my character it helps me have some self-reflection, too, and it helps me to work hard,” she said. Playing the part of Belle has been exciting because Belle is one of Shafter’s favorite Disney princesses. For Caitlin Plowman, 9, of Lihue, who plays the role of Mrs. Potts, singing in harmony and memorizing all of her lines has been challenging, but she has a lot of support. “I like to like practice it at home with my family members, too, so that they can

The actress, who will be entering fourth grade at King Kaumualii Elementary School, said acting has shown her not to be afraid of what other people think and to embrace her differences. She said she’s had fun with this production because she has had to learn accents. “She’s (Mrs. Potts), English so I get to speak in an accent which is really cool and I get to learn how to say different words which is cool,” she said. Acting is important for kids, said Finnley Garcia, 12, who plays a hat seller and

SOME GET THEIR SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE FROM TAROT CARDS CYNTHIA LYNN & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

A

loha readers! There are so many ways that people look

for spiritual guidance. Some people get their guidance through meditation, some through listening quietly after praying, some look in their religion’s sacred text, and some find other means. Here’s another: ever heard of tarot cards? Every tarot deck has 78 cards and each card has a picture on it that depicts what that card means. Its history goes all the way back to ancient Egypt but became more publicly

known in the 14th century in Europe. Some people will use this deck of cards in various ways as a visual tool to guide their day or answer questions they might have. It is somewhat similar to potshotting one’s favorite spiritual, inspirational or religious books when in search of a little guidance! “Tarot Made Easy” explains each card, each of the four suits, the Major Arcana (of which there are

22) and the Minor Arcana (the numbered cards nearly identical to regular deck of cards… which the tarot is where they originally came from!) and show us different layouts to use to determine the answers to our questions we have in our lives. This particular book has been one the most comprehensive and easy-to-use guides that we suggest on understanding the tarot and how to use the Tarot for the beginner or even the

seasoned reader. Sometimes people are taught fairly strict rules to interpret the cards, but author Nancy Garen puts some of those

rules aside and has each card that gets put down in front to interpret (or read) in a simple way, covering a wide variety of areas in our lives that we might have questions about. Whether one uses tarot for fun, games, serious guidance, or is simply curious, this is a great companion for any deck. ••• Cynthia Lynn and Ed Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

IN ‘SKYSCRAPER,’ THE ROCK TOWERS OVER ACTION TROPES JAKE COYLE ASSOCIATED PRESS

I

like to imagine what King Kong, as a popcorn-chomping moviegoer, might make of “Skyscraper,” the latest summer actioner staring Dwayne Johnson. Would he, watching a goliath ascend the exterior of a high-rise with helicopters and klieg lights swirling, woundedly mumble, “Hey, that’s my gig.” But in Rawson Marshall

Thurber’s thriller, there is Johnson steadily — and without too much trouble, really — swinging up a 100-story-high crane to then leap across a mammoth chasm and land in an open window on the burning 220-story tower where his wife and twin kids are trapped. It goes without saying that if you’re the sort to scoff at a tale’s implausibility, “Skyscraper” may not be the movie you’re

looking for. But then again, few go to a movie starring the Rock and a tall building (they do have great chemistry) for sensible and realistic rescue methods. They go for the dumb fun, the crazy stunts and, above all, the Kong-sized appeal of Johnson. Johnson plays Will Sawyer, a former military man who, after a haunting hostage encounter, has become a security systems consultant.

Along with his former combat surgeon wife (the nice-to-see-again Neve Campbell, whose part exceeds the stereotypical spouse role) and their two kids (McKenna Roberts, Noah Cottrell), Sawyer is in Hong Kong to ready the security for “The Pearl,” a state-of-the-art skyscraper promoted as three times the size of the Empire State Building. The building is the pride of billionaire developer

Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han). Sawyer’s family is installed on floor 96, a precarious spot when, just below them, a band of terrorists led by Kores Botha (a ho-hum Roland Moller) sets a floor on fire, blazing a crimson line across the night skyline. Their aim, like countless bandits before them, is to smoke out Zhao. It’s an overly elaborate plan considering they mostly desire the flash drive Zhao carries

with him. “Skyscraper” is counting on your amnesia to the past, on screen and off, and it will readily supply you with two hours of mindless escape. It does the job better than most, thanks largely to its hulking hero. When Johnson makes his crane leap — the movie’s much-promoted central set piece — throngs surrounding the building ooh and aah. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the Rock.
