ne Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will be “Feelin’ Alright” in Kauai on Feb. 9 during “The Very Best of Dave Mason” tour.
Dave Mason will be performing hits from his illustrious career, including classics like “Feelin’ Alright,” among other favorites, at Kauai Beach Resort. “It’s what I love doing, it’s my passion,” Mason said. “I’ll be basically doing it until
I can’t do it anymore, or until nobody comes to the shows.” Mason founded the legendary band, Traffic, with Steve Winwood in 1967 while still a teenager before establishing himself as a successful songwriter,

That means we will be hosting our 23rd Souper Bowl Sunday to benefit the Lihue Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies.” The annual fundraiser features a handmade soup bowl, available in traditional, fluted, or a saimin variety with built-in chopstick holders filled with a soup created by Gaylord’s executive chef Mark Sassone, the bowl going home with the diner. “This is the first time we actually know what chef is going to make,” Pittman said. “Normally, we don’t know what the soup creation is going to be until the week

CONTINENT OF PAN: IS IT LEGEND? CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

airly often in our bookstore, we get asked for books (which we have) about the lost continent of Mu (or Lemuria, as it is also commonly known),
the once-proposed large landmass in the Pacific Ocean that could have connected seemingly disparate places such as Hawaii, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Easter Island, and many others. The idea theorizes that at some point this massive body of land (the Pacific tectonic plate) sunk into the ocean tens of thousands of years ago, dividing up a vast and advanced culture that used to reside there, the remnants of which are
our modern-day Polynesian cultures and edges of Asia and Central/South American cultures. Fascinating idea, right? Author and anthropologist Susan M. Martinez, Ph. D., has penned a very interesting book entitled “The Lost Continent of Pan: The Oceanic Civilization at the Origin of World Culture”. At 501 pages, this work is chock full of information which ties together many intriguing connections between distant societies,
and is full of illustrations and photos of artifacts of ancient history which aid in her explanations. Her proposition is that this legendary pacific continent may have a name common to many cultures: Pan! The concept of such a place having existed is tantalizing! In fact, King Kalakaua was an avid proponent of such a place having existed, he himself being a chronicler of Hawaiian myths and legends. Cultural similarities,
religious and mythological similarities, linguistic similarities… Dr. Martinez highlights and explains them all, and even tackles the question of what might

If you’ve heard of “A Fantastic Woman,” which recently picked up a best foreign language film nomination for Chile, you’ve likely heard this fact. It might even be the only thing you know about it. What’s astonishing about the actual experience of watching “A Fantastic Woman” is how small of “a thing” it really is, and in that way perhaps one of the truest expressions of modern transgender life that we’ve ever seen in a fictional film. Marina is just Marina. She has a delicate beauty, and a cool choppy Alexa Chung-like haircut and style. On stage, she’s performs with a sultry confidence. Off stage, she’s quieter and almost reserved, but very present, especially around

Orlando’s ex-wife tells her in no uncertain terms that she is not welcome at the funeral or wake. His grief stricken son is disgusted by her and makes no attempt to hide. And all Marina wants to do is grieve in her own way. Lelio’s film occasionally delves into some magical realism as Marina struggles to maintain her composure amid such callous inhumanity from so many people, which is a beautiful if jarring disruption in a film that’s otherwise so committed to reality. It’s Vega’s extraordinary performance, full of grace and depth, that keeps “A Fantastic Woman” in check from becoming something either too campy or too sanctimonious. It’s one that has the power to make an audience really understand and internalize why it is an act of bravery to simply live life as herself, and perhaps even change some minds in the process.
