Leonard Patton brings his Leonard Patton Quartet to headline the Westin Princeville Jazz and Wine Festival Saturday, Sept. 22.

Quartet is comprised of vocalist Leonard Patton, guitarist Louis Valenzuela, bassist Mackenzie Leighton and drummer Julien Cantelm. The San Diego-based musicians will entertain the crowd with their original,

contemporary arrangements of Brazilian and jazz standards. In 2017, the Leonard Patton Quartet broke the Guinness Book of World Records for the most live musical performances in a 24-hour period after performing 70 mini-concerts.

Throughout the evening, a silent auction will offer bidders hotel stays, airfare, activities, dining certificates and more, all benefitting KLA. As a nonprofit organization, KLA aims to maximize ocean safety in and around Kauai waters through education, training and maintaining high standards of professional and open-water lifesaving practices and techniques.

art-time Maui resident Willie Nelson is country music personified, but he’s no red-headed stranger to the Great American Songbook, either. On “My Way,” the prolific Texan swings and croons through 11 songs associated with Frank Sinatra, with whom he formed an unlikely and undeniable mutual admiration society.

Nelson has been releasing albums at a pace rarely seen these days among major stars, much less 85-year-olds who’ve been on the road forever. “My

Way,” second of the year after the reflective “Last Man Standing,” is a joy from start to finish.

With “Stardust,” his smash 1978 LP, Nelson became an early adherent to the now-ubiquitous crossover interpretation of pop standards and though he’s recorded some of these songs before — including opener “Fly Me to the Moon” and one of Sinatra’s greatest performances, “One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)” — the right-sized string and horn arrangements led here by Matt Rollings accommodate both Ol’ Blue Eyes’ world and Nelson’s own

idiosyncratic interpretations.

“Fly Me to the Moon” gains a slightly more spirited pace than on Nelson’s 2009 “American Classic,” while “Summer Wind” includes a lyrical Nelson solo on Trigger, that nylon-string Martin guitar of his with an extra hole resulting from years of use.

The backing really shines on “One for My Baby” and Nelson’s vocal shows how he is indeed a “kind of poet” even when the song is not his own composition.

Nelson’s experience lends a special grace to “It Was a Very Good Year” and “Young at Heart.”

P

izzetta Italian Kitchen and Bar. That just sounds like a place you would want to visit.

And to that, we say, go for it.

This wonderful, cozy restaurant in Koloa has what anyone could want

when dining out. A warm setting, friendly staff, prompt service and, yes, great pizza.

The night before the Kauai Marathon, my wife and I stopped here so I could fuel up for the next day’s 26.2 miles. Despite a line out the door just a little after 5 p.m., it was only a matter of minutes before we were led by a young

hostess to a corner table.

Not the best table in the house, mind you, a bit tight for quarters, but when the place is hopping like this one, likely many of them planning to run the next day, you can’t be too picky.

The water glasses were promptly filled and after about a five-minute wait, our waitress arrived. She quickly apologized for the

delay in service and even apologized for the many diners and chairs so near our table, which right away made us appreciate her efforts and her smile.

The 12-inch vegetarian pizza we ordered was delivered to our table sooner than I expected, considering the crowd. And I have this one word to say about

it: bravissimo! Perhaps one of the best pizzas we have had. Perfection on the crust, not too thin so it seems there isn’t much to it, and not too thick so it seems later like you ate a giant ball of dough. It was a beautiful pizza, filled with flavor and taste, and one that the two of us had no trouble finishing.

A little thing to point out: sometimes when you only order water, as we did, they don’t refill it too often or too quickly. At Pizzetta, our water glasses were refilled as soon as we emptied them.

waitress left it with us at just about the right time.

Too soon, and you feel like you’re being rushed out the door. Too late, and it’s like they forgot about us.

As busy as it was, staff paid close attention to us.

Pizzetta is casual and nice. You’ll be fine if you’re wearing shorts and a tank top or an aloha shirt and long pants. The place was overflowing with conversation. Men and women sat around the bar, sipping beers or mixed drinks, watching the big-screen TV above the bar, chatting and just enjoying the ambiance.

A bit noisy, but it was a Saturday night.

They have more than pizza at this fine Italian restaurant. Calzones, pasta dishes, salads, antipasti and a variety of specialties are available.

The penne Siciliano, the seafood fettuccine, the spaghetti pomodoro and the eggplant parmigiana all, as we read about them on the menu, sounded like a feast that we’ll certainly try on our return.

Pizzas, by the way, included the margherita, Italian sausage, Hawaiian, shrimp puttanesca and the super combo and, judging by how many we saw delivered to tables, they are popular.

The prices range from $10 to $15 for salads, $15 to $30 for a pizza, and the $20 range for specialties. It’s not over or under-priced, but is, not surprisingly, just right.

Wherever you live on Kauai, the drive will be worth it to try Pizzetta in Old Koloa Town.

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE HAWAII HOME, READ THIS BOOK BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY

N

ot long after I moved to Kauai in 2013, a friend gave me a book she said would be invaluable for life in Hawaii. She was right.

The book, “Culture Shock! A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette Hawaii,” by Brent Massey, is one of those must-reads for anyone who wants to live here, and might even come in handy for those who do live here.

Little upsets locals more than newbies and visitors who show little respect for the customs, cultures and traditions of Hawaii.

They can understand that you don’t know everything about Hawaii and its history and how to pronounce Hawaiian words. But their tolerance is limited for those who are disrespectful of, really, the basics, like green sea turtles are

great to see, but don’t approach and touch them. Snorkeling is a wonderful activity, but don’t stand on the reefs.

Massey writes that people in Hawaii are — contrary to common public perception that they don’t like anyone from the mainland — friendly, helpful and kind with a smile. But they aren’t big on those who are rude.

So, to help you navigate your way, Massey offers tips on fitting in, settling in, enjoying Hawaii, working in Hawaii, learning the language and the history of the islands.

He sums things up well with this paragraph: “You may know Hawaii’s travel industry’s advertising, but most don’t know the history of Hawaii or even Polynesia. You are at a disadvantage, having so much information and lack of information. It is common to assume that

moving to Hawaii is like moving to any other state in America; after all, how different could it be?”

“Hawaii has a long history that is different from mainland USA.” Hawaii is different, as anyone

knows who visits or lives here. It’s not like where you came from and, as they will tell you, if that’s what you want, go back home.

For instance, I came from Idaho, an in-your-face state where people speak their mind and don’t pretend to like you if they don’t. If someone was upset with something I wrote in the newspaper, they called me up or just came down to the office. My old boss told me of a story in Idaho where a public official came to visit him shortly after he started his new job as the editor, and told him he wanted him fired and he thought he should know that, up front.

That wouldn’t happen here. Blunt speaking is frowned upon, and if you do that, don’t expect to be invited to pau hana events.

Massey does a good job of very clearly outlining the customs of Hawaii and offering tips to newcomers on what to do, what to

avoid, how to get along and how to understand what you don’t understand about life here.

It’s a book filled with good information you need to know about Hawaii.

His goal with it is to help prevent you from being frustrated, isolated, deciding you made the biggest mistake of your life and packing your bags to return home.

“There are thousands of people who move to Hawaii each year and then move back to the mainland a year later,” Massey writes.

“This book will help you avoid being another short-timer statistic by dispelling the misinformation, myths and stereotypes you may have already learned about Hawaii.”

Well said.

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY GIVES HEART TO ‘WHITE BOY RICK’ LINDSEY BAHR ASSOCIATED PRESS

T

here’s a “where are they now” at the end of “White Boy Rick,” an astonishing true story about a teenager in a rough part of Detroit in the 1980s who became an undercover FBI informant, that might have served the movie better had the audience been aware from the beginning.

This kid, Richard Wershe Jr., ended up being arrested and sentenced to life in prison for possessing eight

kilograms of cocaine under a controversial Michigan drug policy, the so-called 650-lifer law. He was only 17 — a minor — and, until recently, was still behind bars.

This isn’t the story that’s told in director Yann Demange’s film, but it is context that would have helped frame the whole endeavor and perhaps make us care a little more about Rick from the beginning.

As it is, this movie is all about how he ended up there. Rick, played by newcomer Richie Merritt,

is the son of a smart and charismatic but down-onhis-luck, lower-class dad/ hustler, Richard Sr. (Matthew McConaughey, sporting a big mustache and long, combed-back hair), who’s trying to advance their station in life by re-selling modified AK-47s to local drug lords in east Detroit.

Rick’s mom left them, and his sister, Dawn (Bel Powley), is on the verge of becoming a full-blown junkie.

The film starts out in 1984 when Rick is 14, and shows how this soft-spoken boy

with a tough-guy demeanor gets so easily swept up in and seduced by the glamour of the drug scene, the parties, the access, the girls and, of course, the money.

Two FBI agents (played

by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Rory Cochrane) pay Richard Sr. a visit one day, trying to get him to give some info about the people he sells guns to. He declines, but Rick Jr. jumps in to tell them a little. And in no time at all, he’s a full-on informant, playing a double game with some of the city’s most

powerful dealers, like Lil’ Man (Jonathan Majors), and making money on his own.

Demange gives a real sense of place and time in “White Boy Rick,” from the homes and the cars to the clubs and the glorious neon “Skate & Roll” sign outside one of their regular gathering spots.

McConaughey is so good and emotionally affecting as Richard Sr., in both vulnerable and tough moments.

The film overstays its welcome, especially in the slow-going third act, and

fails to really develop some of the essential characters outside of the Wershe family.

Overall, it is a bewildering story of the callousness of the adults who helped encourage Rick to get into this position (the betrayals will make your blood boil), and an indictment of how U.S. laws can tend to hurt the most vulnerable classes.

It also doesn’t take itself too deadly seriously, which is maybe the best thing to happen to this Scorsese-adjacent genre in a while.

TOOTING THE PAULO WHISTLE P aulo, the oldest operating steam locomotive in Hawaii, needs some work, and the Grove Farm Museum hosted the first Sugar Plantation Bash as a fundraiser to help get Paulo back on the tracks.

Angelo Catiggay and his family from the Philippines Islands Hawaii Islands Bicycle Club had never been to the museum before, but had to help Kenny Ishii dispense shave ice (perfect for that humid Saturday afternoon), and Anolani Higashi of Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala (they left for Japan Wednesday) had never even driven down the road.

People who took advantage of the museum’s open house were treated to sampling of fresh poi from Josh Fukino kalo, and Paula Rosa made sure there were enough cookies available from the museum’s original firewood oven under the blanket of entertainment that included the Joyful Noise taiko ensemble, Filipino cultural dances from Bailes de Jose and the Paraluman dancers, and more — all to help Paulo get back on the tracks.
