“World Oceans Day is becoming increasingly a really great day to explore all aspects of the ocean,” said Jean Souza of NOAA and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

“From outdoor immersive activities to outreach activities, there is something now on Kauai for everyone.”

You’ll find Souza helping with the inflatable whale, among other things at Kukui Grove. That walk-through whale will be presented by sanctuary volunteers hosting keiki and adults from 5 to 8 tonight and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The realistic-looking, inflatable humpback whale presents a unique and entertaining way to understand the inner workings of the whale, migration, conservation and research,” Souza said. “The hope is to inspire a wonderment that lasts a lifetime.”

Tana Ball, KPNWR volunteer educator, will be on hand Saturday as well, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with albatross activities near the Keiki Korner Children’s Play area.

This will be accompanied by a display of art projects by Kapaa Elementary School’s third-graders throughout the center, featuring the preservation of the moli and its habitat. Keiki can learn about the moli with Ball, do the moli dance, and even become a moli in a unique, dress-up learning experience, according to McFerrin Warrack.

“The ‘Moli Life Cycle’ (program) in the elementary schools is all about empowering the thirdgrade students to understand what is happening to the Laysan albatross (moli) and other sea creatures (and how that) will affect their own future,” said Ball.

“We encourage the students, after learning about the plastics in the oceans, rising seas, to use their voice to create messages to help ‘save our moli.’”

The students all created their own artwork. This year, they are working on a public service announcement calendar to help get their message out to the public.

“The students are our future, so it is in their hands,” Ball said.

Student artwork can be viewed at Kukui Grove for two weeks starting on World Oceans Day. The Purple Striped Honu Theatre will be performing an original, short, theater piece, “Where’s Mom?” about a monk seal, next to the Keiki Korner Children’s Play area.

Bring a keiki for one of their three performances at 10:30, 11, and 11:30 a.m. Saturday. This is children’s theater, performed by adults, in a short, fun and colorful way. Showtime characters and center tenants will also be participating for some sea-inspired fun, crafts and tattoos for the keiki.

In the evening, a family movie

night will be held screening “Aquaman” on center stage in the newly renovated food court. The film is free and will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Prior to the film there will be activities during the afternoon, including free outdoor games for kids and a swimsuit model competition with Focus International Hawaii from 3 to 6 p.m. for a festive environment to close the day.

he United Nations has invited leading environmental artist, Anne de Carbuccia, to be a speaker at the UN’s New York headquarters on June 7 for this year’s World Oceans Day 2019 de Carbuccia celebration.

The theme designated by the UN this year is Gender and The Ocean. She will be speaking about her recent expedition to Xcalak, Mexico, and her collaboration with two young women who are ocean protectors in their local community.

These women are an example for the world on community-driven stewardship at a local level, as well as how individuals can be a powerful catalyst for change in ensuring oceans are healthy for future generations, she said.

They have overcome gender-specific difficulties in conservation, and they are transmitting inclusive environmental leadership values for the next generation. de Carbuccia will also be showing video footage that she shot in Xcalak highlighting these two women and their community. The world’s second largest barrier reef passes just offshore of this fishing village. de Carbuccia’s gallery in New York City, One Planet One Future, will also open a new exhibition, Water at Dusk, in celebration of World Oceans Day that is free and open to the public from now through June 29th. Visitors will have a chance to see new works of art themed around the ocean as well as view her debut short film, “One Ocean.”

‘LILO & STITCH’ IS A JOYOUS DELIGHT ABOUT LOVE, OHANA AND AN ALIEN BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY

◗ Editor’s note: This is the first of a weekly series of reviews of movies with scenes shot on Kauai, or that have a connection to Kauai. e’ll start with “Lilo & Stitch,” a brilliant 2002 Walt Disney Pictures film that tells the story of an extraterrestrial creature, “Experiment 626,” that is genetically engineered to seek and destroy and cause all sorts of trouble. Stitch is kind of like a little mini Superman, only with big teeth, a devious sense of humor and bent of destruction. It is sentenced to be imprisoned by an alien court of some sort, but escapes and lands its highjacked space ship on Kauai.

And while animated, there are

clear depictions of Kauai and its beauty, its colors, its mountains.

Once here, it meets a Hawaiian girl, Lilo Pelekai, who has her own challenges, seems to have no friends and is being looked after by her older sister Nani after their parents are killed in a car crash. Experiment 626 ends up in the animal shelter and, disguised as a most-peculiar-looking dog, is adopted by Lilo.

These two share heart-warming adventures, tender moments and also the destruction of Lilo’s home.

Through it all, they form more than a friendship, as this little creature with giant ears becomes part of their family. Despite its design to cause chaos, Stitch learns about

becoming part of an ohana. Stitch, made to be a little destroyer, protects this Hawaii family from the intergalactic bad guy sent to bring him in.

Stitch and Lilo are terrific. Lilo has a heart of gold and, as it turns out, so does Stitch. The way they look after each other is what we wish for all our families. Aloha, in the end, rules.

A scene near the end of the movie, when Stitch is finally captured and about to be returned to his world in outer space, is beautiful: “Can Stitch say goodbye?”

“Yes.” He walks and hugs Lilo, to which the head martian says, “Who are you?”

Stitch’s answer is the stuff of tears.

“This is my family. I found it all on my own. It’s little, and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good.”

Few words with a powerful message. The alien leader relents and

Stitch gets to stay with his family.

Stitch steals the show with his infectious smile and his impersonation of Elvis.

This movie is still floating around out there in DVD form, and you may find it at a thrift store for a few bucks.

One complaint: It does seem to stereotype visitors as careless, chubby, sunburned Caucasians who carry cameras, rest on lounge chairs and eat ice cream. Doesn’t seem like that was really needed.

But from the opening scene of colorful fish in the ocean, to the closing collage of this ohana, this movie is a delight.

Wouldn’t Molly’s character be a little more believable if she was a devoted comedy writer, those Tina Fey referenced when she last year told Letterman that they had been out there, wanting to write on his show.

Maybe when it comes to late-night television, realism isn’t the way to go. You just can’t beat “The Larry Sanders Show,” after all. But “Late Night” isn’t quite sure how real it wants to be, cartoonishly exaggerating some angles and telling others straight.

Most of the real-life late-night hosts are referenced or make cameos, including Seth Meyers and Bill Maher.

early 2,000 people, including patrons and volunteers, converged at Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Wailua Sunday for the Rotary Club of Kauai’s 30th Taste of Hawaii.

Patrons were treated to an extravagant brunch from nearly 50 food-and-beverage vendors, and 17 bands performed.

Patrons were able to vote on their favorite food offerings and musical ensembles at the gathering designed to offer patrons a fine afternoon while raising funds for the Rotary Club of Kapaa and its numerous service projects that better the community.

Ron Wiley, the event emcee, was surprised and honored for his community work by being named an honorary member of the club by Jakki Nelson and Ron Lemay during one of the musical group introductions.
