Celebrating 20 years of Kapaa music

T

he keyboard will be there Saturday at the Kapaa Middle School covered court when the Kapaa Middle School Choir Boosters Club “Celebrate 20 Years of Music Alumni Reunion.” “I had a portable keyboard that was a great addition to my teaching style,” said Mary DENNIS FUJIMOTO Lardizabal, the Kapaa Middle TGIFR!DAY School music director who will celebrate 20 years of Dennis Fujimoto/The Garden Island teaching at the school. “When I moved to Kauai in Mary Lardizabal, the Kapaa Middle School music director, her keyboard, and students from the choir and ukulele band get together before a holiday performance at the Safeway in Lihue. 1990, it was very challeng-

ing to find a job in my field, which was mass communication in radio and television. I started substitute teaching and enjoyed it very much, using the keyboard to add to my teaching style.” Renee Thronas, the Kapaa High School’s music director, retired in 1994 and Wayne Watanabe, the Kapaa High principal, offered the position to Lardizabal. She was completing her teaching credentials through the first cohort program offered at

Kauai Community College through the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “Mrs. Thronas had a thriving music program,” Lardizabal said. “During the music celebration reunion, we will feature some of her students because her programs overlapped the ones we started.” When Kapaa Middle School opened in 1997, Lardizabal was one of the teachers who welcomed SEE MUSIC, PAGE 5

‘God was leading me to do it’ Kauai filmmaker to present sneak peak of ‘Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song’

ward-winning filmmaker and Kauai native Stephanie Castillo knew little about her late brother-in-law, Thomas Chapin. She knew he was a musician, but it wasn’t until she read his obituary that she realized he was someone special to the jazz community. “I really didn’t know much about jazz or his world or what he was playing in until I read the obituary,” she said. “That’s when I was like, ‘Wow, he was somebody.’” After two years away from the Garden Isle, Castillo

returns to Kauai on Jan. 8 and will present clips of her documentary, “Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song,” at the St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church Parish Hall. “My experience of making this film felt very much like God was leading me to do it, and leading me as I was doing it,” she said. The sneak peek will feature a Q&A with Castillo and the showing of selected segments of her 2 1/2 hour film. The documentary explores the life and music of Chapin, a master alto sax and flute player who performed in

Castillo flew to places Chapin performed and asked sources who knew about him one question: Does Thomas Chapin deserve a film? “They all said absolutely, yes he does,” she said. “That’s what the film is based on: the answers of why Thomas Photo courtesy Akasha Inc. later went on to form his own trio. Today, Castillo said, his music is inspiring a new generation of artists and musicians. “I think the people of Kauai should know who he is like everybody else in the world,” she said. “They have a special advantage knowing that he had ties to Kauai.” One tie with Kauai, Castillo relates, involves Chapin hearing “clacking sounds” close to shore by the Russian Fort in Waimea. “While he and (his wife)

Terri were taking a walk by the Russian Fort, he heard this clacking,” she said. “What it was, was a group of kukui nuts. The ocean was pushing them against the rocks. He went in the water and he got a whole bunch of the kukui nuts, brought them to New York and made one of his instruments that he plays with. Kauai is in his music as well.” “God-led Filmmaking: An Evening with Stephanie J. Castillo” begins 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 and is free. For more information, call 808245-3796 or 808-647-4346.

All about ‘Star Wars’ CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

H

appy New Year! Now that the future is the past with 2015 behind us (“Back to the Future, Part II” reference — geek alert), all sorts of exciting new things await us beginning with the continuing run of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (a.k.a. Episode VII), the long-awaited next chapter in the “Star Wars” film saga. By now, you may have seen (or are waiting to see) this record-breaking blockbuster movie. Grossing over a BILLION dollars worldwide, it is showing no

signs of slowing down, with everyone planning on seeing it at least two or three more times (seen it twice already!). There is a lot going on in this new movie, and being introduced to both old and new characters (even with repeat viewings) there is still so much to see. That being said, this week’s book

perfectly coincides with the new film! Publisher DK (always high-quality books) has released this beautiful new book, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens — The Visual Dictionary,” and what a guide it is! This large format hardcover is beautifully laid out, covering all the characters, ships, droids, weaponry and

supplementary characters as well. We found it really interesting how much back story the book gives for each of the characters and their universe, providing greater depth to what was portrayed on-screen. It explains the transitions between the end of “Return of the Jedi” and this new film, how the defeated Empire changed into the New Republic and the creation of the villainous First Order, wonderfully providing a richer context to enjoy the film with. It even reveals the inner workings of the famous lightsabers! Best of all, it is written for both kids and adults to enjoy equally. Until next week, “May the Force be with you!” ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are the owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.
