Holo Holo Charters of Port Allen has become the first floating eatery to earn an Ocean Friendly Restaurant certification from Surfrider Kauai.

auai’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants has expanded to include its first floating eatery as Holo Holo Charters has jumped on board and gotten the certification from Surfrider Kauai. It’s a program designed to reduce the amount of single-use and polystyrene plastic that’s going into the ocean and dozens of Kauai restaurants are getting certified through Surfrider. Some of those restaurants include Little Fish Coffee and Kalaheo Coffee on the south and west sides; Aloha Aina Juice Café and The Greenery in Lihue; The Local and Tiki Taco in Kapaa; and Opakapaka Grill and Bar in Hanalei. Now, the first tour boat charter company has joined the mix. “Holo Holo Charters has been doing its part in

cutting down single-use plastics for quite some time and has been proactive in creating less overall debris that could end up in our ocean,” said Kit Furderer, spokesman for Holo Holo Charters. It was Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant state of Hawaii co-chair Anny Barlow who suggested the company get the certification after learning about some of those steps the company has taken to help keep the oceans clean. “Holo Holo Charters uses biodegradable cups and reduces single-use throw away items by using reusable dishes on board its vessels,” Furderer said. “Holo Holo Charters has long been a part of the global movement to clean up our environment and believes the smallest steps have the potential to make the biggest impact.” SEE HOLO HOLO, PAGE 5

Jeffrey Gettleman, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist and a seasoned war correspondent, For the past decade, he has served as the East

Africa bureau chief for the New York Times. He has had a following for quite some time as a journalist so this book was an exciting acquisition for his many followers. This book takes place in one of the most challenging places to visit in Africa but it is an account of his own personal life while he was there. It may very well challenge your own perspectives and standards, but it is a very honest account of his own experiences.

His book has been compared to another book we have reviewed which was “Barbarian Days”, which was also a very personal tale of love, changes as a man growing into his own while exploring his own passions which, for William Finnegan, was the world of surfing. “Love, Africa” covers Jeffrey being torn, not only between two women that found himself in love with, but also challenged by his experiences of seeing a torn Africa at the beginning

of change, much like himself. He was experiencing all of it for the very first time. Having met him in person, it is interesting to see this author come away from his experiences still with a positive attitude and a twinkle in his eye. Worthy read! ••• Ed Justus and Cynthia

Having risen well above the streets, Priest senses his good fortune can’t last. He wants to get out, along with his two girlfriends

(Lex Scott Davis, Andrea Londo), before fate comes for him. There are already signs that his even-keeled lifestyle is about to get rocky. A squabble threatens the peace with the rival crew dubbed Snow Patrol, a white-dressed gang of dealers who drive white cars, shoot white guns and pretty much look like the ATL chapter of the Storm Troopers. With one last score in mind, Priest does what few ready to give up a life of crime would do: He goes to great lengths to prove him-

self to a powerful Mexican cartel. “Don’t let the pretty hair fool you,” Priest pleads to the cartel boss (Esai Morales) after circumventing his regular supplier and mentor, the karate master Scatter (Michael Kenneth Williams). Williams’ presence begs the question: Wouldn’t “Superfly” be better — and carry more of a sense of danger, of real threat — if Williams was starring in it? Jackson comfortably carries the film with a smooth panache, but his Priest — like the movie — doesn’t make

much of an impression. Yet “Superfly” is also a generally entertaining movie, with good things in it. Mitchell (“Mudbound”) is predictably excellent as Priest’s less scrupulous partner and friend; he’s the film’s high point. And any movie that casts Big Boi as the mayor of Atlanta has done some things right. (“Superfly” would be better if there was more of him in it.) And Jennifer Morrison, one of the two crooked police detectives in the film, is unexpectedly terrific in a usually stereotypical role.

More celebrations awaited at the Historic County Building as food booths unwrapped offerings along with craft vendors and a day of entertainment to the delight of hundreds of visitors’ cameras.
