SONGS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS Slack-key concert supports nursing, music students
S
ince 1916, The Mokihana Club has been supporting Kauai’s healthcare system, starting with the first public health nurse hired to the island that year. And Saturday, March 9, the club is continuing the tradition into 2019 with a fundraising concert that will raise scholarship money for nursing and music students at Kauai Community College. “Each year the club does some big event to raise money,” said Terri Gately, club spokeswoman and member. “In the past they’ve done the golf scramble, and this year we’ve decided to do this big concert.” Headlining The Mokihana Club Scholarship Benefit Concert and Silent Auction are Hawaiian slackkey guitar masters Keola Beamer and Jeff Peterson, with Moanalani Beamer. “We’re real excited about that, and love their music, and most people in the community are familiar with them,” Gately said. The silent auction items have poured in from all over the island, and people can bid on hotel stays and restaurant gift certificates, spa treatments, quilts and tours. “There’s such a variety of items in all price ranges, with something for everyone,” Gately said. There’ll also be a no-host bar so people can get wine and beer. The event will be at the AquaKauai Beach Resort. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the silent auction and the concert starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds go to the scholarship fund. That partnership between

The Mokihana Club and KCC was created in 2003. Music came onto the scene in 1955, when The Mokihana Club sponsored the first performance of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra on Kauai. Though the sponsorship of music programs was taken over by the Kauai Concert Association, The Mokihana Club was still interested in helping young people with
musical talent. An annual music scholarship was established, one that awards scholarships to qualifying high school graduates who wish to pursue musical studies. Lately, The Mokihana Club has about 20 people apply for the scholarships in total, with a majority of the applications coming from SEE SONGS, PAGE 3

the medical sector of study. In 2018, about 15 scholarships were given out for nursing students, and six were given out to music students. “It’s a nice amount so they (students) can get started in college. Each scholarship might be different,” Gately said. “Usually, it’s
about $20,000 to the nursing program and $5,000 or $10,000 for music students, depending on funds. There’s far more nursing students who apply.” To date, a total of $112,000 in scholarships has been awarded to honor and support students who choose to study nursing. Founded by Mable Wilcox, The Mokihana Club is open to all women, and the mission is to “be a force of
social and cultural stimulation, and to undertake civic development and improvement on the island of Kauai.” Tickets are $50 for general admission and $75 for golden circle admission. alty Wahine Gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salts and Aunty Lilikoi have done it again! For the second straight year, Island Volcano Seasoning captured the Golden Chile First Place Cook Off — Dry Seasoning/Rub Fowl category at the Fiery Food Challenge in Irving, Texas. “Salty Wahine made a huge repeat splast at the Fiery Food Challenge with our second entry in this prestigious event,” said Laura Cristobal Andersland, owner of Hanapepe-based Salty Wahine. “Salty Wahine erupted for five awards — two first-place awards, first place People’s Choice in Spice Rub for the second year, and two third-place awards. I can’t believe we beat all these Texas barbeque rubs for two years in a row. It is nice to know that Kauai products can compete internationally and hold our own.” In addition to the Golden Chile first place in the Dry Seasoning/ Rub Fowl category, Island Volcano earned a second Golden Chile in the Dry Seasoning/Rub Pork category, and went on to earn its second People’s Choice award in the Dry Seasoning/Rub category. Wasabi Mustard and the other for her Passion Fruit Keawe Barbeque Sauce. Aunty Lilikoi also earned a second-place award for her Passion Fruit Wasabi Dressing. The Fiery Food Challenge pits products from across the United States and internationally against one another in more than 85 cate-
gories. Professional judges evaluate hundreds of sauces, salsas and other spicy treats before awarding first-, second- and third-place prizes in each of the categories. The awards are also displayed at Zest Fest, a spicy, zesty and flavorful food event held during the Fiery Food Challenge at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas, Texas. “Island Volcano was developed by my son Sean just three years ago,” Cristobal said. “He wanted a rub better than his mom’s Hawaiian Rub, and came up with a spicy version of Hawaiian Rub. With the Fiery Food Golden Chiles, Island Volcano has already earned 18 international awards. Salty Wahine has picked up 36 international awards for its products, 17 of which belong to Island Volcano.” Wynona Adams, the most recent associate in the Salty Wahine visitor center, said Island Volcano brings heat to food. “I use it on a lot of stuff I cook with,” Adams said. “I like the heat, and it’s easy to use. bout 200 runners completed either the 2K, 5K or 10K distances of the 42nd annual Captain Cook Caper Run on Saturday in Waimea. Everyone, from the keiki to the kupuna who fell into the 51-to-99 age group, had a good time in the race that benefits Waimea High School programs. The weather was pretty much close to ideal, with sunshine, blue skies and a nice breeze. The race was part of the Waimea Town Celebration. Kawaihoola Curnan was the 10K in 37:45. Alex Dutcher led the women in the 10K in 39:21. Jeremy Gibbons won the 5K in 21:03, while Hildegarde Miyasir led the women in 24:06. Sean Mullikin led the 2K in 8:37, while Makana Duncan was also clocked in 8:37.
