‘Aina: That Which Feeds Us’ premieres at KCC

S

ince the ancient days of Hawaii, island people have treasured the concept of malama aina. That concept will be displayed through the new film, “Aina: That Which Feeds Us.â€? â€œI think they did a really good job of talking about the importance of the land to all of us,â€? Aina storyteller Sabra Kauka said. “It’s a documentary and it’s brief but it says a lot of important things.â€? The environmentally conscious movie directed by Josh Thome comes from the perspective of Kauai’s people and speaks about the representations of two extreme versions of agriculture on Kauai. The first is the traditional Hawaiian ecological system and the second is companies’ use of pesticides on genetically modified crops. Executive director for the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association Bennette Misalucha released a commentary regarding the film. â€œObviously I’ve not see the movie but after seeing the trailer my fear is that the film

is full of a historic nostalgia that provides no real solution for feeding our population, expected to double by 2050, and generates misinformed fears about modern farming,â€? Misalucha said. Misalucha wrote that pesticides are the most tested and thoroughly reviewed chemicals in the world and are regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. â€œPesticides are an essential tool for keeping our food free of insects and diseases; they help protect Hawaii from invasive species that would destroy not just our ag. industry, but our homes,

‘that which feeds us,’â€? Kauka said. “This is real life. This is who we are, what we believe.â€? Kauka is looking forward to the film’s debut. â€œFirst of all, they have some beautiful footage in it and secondly, I think the thoughts of the people that are interviewed in the movie, and beyond myself, are timely, pertinent and valuable,â€? she said. “I think we need to be a lot more aware of what we’re doing to the Earth and all the species that live on the Earth.â€?Â

Misalucha said HCIA’s goal is to provide facts regarding the use of pesticides and it will continue to expedite respectful, fact-based conversations about their use. â€œIt is to the benefit of all users of pesticide products to utilize these tools through safe practices as stated on the label,â€? Misalucha said. Aina will be shown at Kauai Community College’s Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Saturday. It will be followed by a panel with

the global crossroads facing our native species, and agriculture. ultimately our economy,â€? “Quite literally, aina means Misalucha said. SEE AINA, PAGE 6 Local taro farmer and aquatic biologist Don Heacock doesn’t believe in the use of pesticides and views them as a dangerous resource. â€œIt’s unnecessary. et a bunch of green bananas, peel the skin, grate them, add in pork, olives, and several other ingredients, and cook. You got yourself pasteles. Simple, right? Wrong. Tell that to 76-year-old Adela Rivera of Lawai Valley. “It takes pretty much a whole day. It’s not an easy job,” she said. “There is no shortcut in making your pastele, your gandule rice and your Puerto Rican food. You do that, and you ruin your recipe.” The pastele maker, who has over 60 years of cooking experience with the Puerto Rican dish, is among several contestants in the inaugural Pastele Cook-off at the Kauai Veteran’s Center at 6 p.m. Saturday. The event is hosted by Janet and Godwin Esaki of

the Kapaa Banana Company. Godwin, a third-generation banana farmer, came up with the idea of the cook-off after several of his customers bragged about their pasteles. “All the guys who buy the bananas for pastele said that theirs are the best, so I said, ‘We should have a contest then you can put your pastele where my mouth is,’” he said. A traditional Puerto Rican dish, and a favorite among locals, pasteles generally include grated green bananas, pork, achiote oil and olives. Proceeds will benefit Lihue Aikido Club, Leadership Kauai and The Kauai Veterans Center. Contestants will be judged on four criteria — appearance, flavor, texture and overall authenticity. The top three winners will receive cash prizes, while one contestant will win a

people’s choice award — a free stay at Kauai Beach Resort. Janet said contestants will be allowed to cook other specialty dishes — such as gandule rice and pastele stew — and sell leftover pasteles and dishes to spectators. Kachi Kachi music will be provided by Wally Rita y Los Kauaianos. The cook-off will have a beer garden as well as wine. Entry fee is $55, which includes a case of bananas and a vendor booth for pastele sales. Entry forms and tickets are available at Vicky’s Fabrics and Kauai Music and Sound in Kapaa; Sueoka’s in Koloa; and Party Wonderland, Tanaka Plumbing and Aloha Feed in Lihue. Doors open at 6 p.m. and attendees are asked to donate $15. Info: (808) 822-1158

restaurant in the heart of Kalaheo is getting a makeover from the owners of a popular Mexican eatery. “We’re real excited that we’re here,” said Tony Aguilar, co-owner of Paco’s Tacos Cantina, who, along with his brother Paco, bought Birdie’s restaurant from Ron Horoshko. “We love to make food for people.” When he and Paco visited Kukuiolono golf course for the first time last month to survey a new location for their expanding business, they were astonished by the beauty of the ocean, cool breeze and surrounding mountains. “I never thought it was this beautiful,” Tony Aguilar said. “I mean who has this view, right?” The name of the restaurant at the clubhouse at Kukuiolono golf course will be changed from Birdie’s to Paco’s Tacos Cantina. The Aguilars also own Paco’s Tacos house and a Paco’s Tacos lunch wagon

Aguilar said guests can expect a full menu change starting Aug. 1. Breakfast items are between $8 and $10 and will consist of traditional, Mexican cuisine. Breakfast is served all day. Lunch platters range between $5 and $16.

Other new aspects of the restaurant and bar will include draft beer and a selection of tequila. Some things, however, will not change. For instance, the Sunday brunch will remain, as will live music on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The grand opening of Paco’s Tacos Cantina is expected to be on the second week of August. World wasn’t always ‘Drug Crazy’

CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

B

onjour! Yes, we are still traveling! This week’s book, “Drug Crazy — How We Got Into This Mess and How We Can Get Out,â€? by Mike Gray, is astounding! In our personal lives, we haven’t met anyone that isn’t frustrated with the “war on drugs.â€? This book lays out why. Did you know that originally drugs were not illegal, and were prescribed only by a pharmacist? So, what changed? What you learn will utterly surprise you. The writer starts his timeline of the first drug laws, which started in the United States (the first country to do so), banning opium in order to have a reason

to deport Chinese workers who were competing in the California labor pool; to follow later was marijuana to deport competing Mexicans, and so on. More and more laws were put in place which began to create a lucrative black market for what had once been cheap and prac-

tically crime-free. Over 100 years later, here we are today. â€œDrug Crazyâ€? is an objective, well-researched analysis of how our “war on drugsâ€? has created our drug lords and our career anti-drug advocates, and both, by the way, benefit extremely from the billions of dollars that our country spends to “fight drugs.â€? This book clearly shows how this crusade started and how its repercussions has affected every nation in the world. The good news is “Drug Crazyâ€? presents a clear, simple way to remedy the entire issue. Other counties have begun the process, and having far lower crime as a result. Because we found this book so important, we always make sure to have several copies available on our shelves, and if you vote, this book gives you knowledge on how to begin to make a difference. â€˘â€˘â€˘Â ED AND CYNTHIA JUSTUS ARE THE OWNERS OF THE BOOKSTORE IN HANAPEPE.Â

Kauka said. “We need to raise consciousness and that’s what this movie does.â€?Â
