the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which has risen because investors have anticipated faster growth and higher inflation since the election.


Average US 30-year mortgage rate dips to 4.15 percent WASHINGTON — Long-term mortgage rates slipped again this week. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the rate on 30-year, fixed-rate loans eased to 4.15 percent from 4.17 percent last week. The benchmark rate stood at 3.65 percent a year ago and averaged 3.65 percent through 2016, lowest in records going back to 1971. The rate on 15-year mortgages dropped to 3.35 percent this week from 3.39 percent and 2.95 percent a year ago. Both rates fell for the second straight week. But rates have soared since President Donald Trump was elected Nov. 8. Investors have bid rates higher because they expect Trump’s plans to cut taxes and increase spending on infrastructure will boost growth and inflation.

Optimism among US homebuilders weakens U.S. homebuilders are feeling a bit less confident this month, reflecting a dimmer outlook for sales in the months ahead and fewer would-be buyers dropping by builders’ sales offices. The surprising decline comes ahead of the spring home-buying season, which is traditionally builders’ busiest time of the year and helps set the pace for home construction. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo builder sentiment index released Wednesday fell to 65 this month. That’s down two points from a revised reading of 67 in January. Analysts had been expecting an increase. Readings above 50 indicate more builders view sales conditions as good rather than poor. The index has been above 60 since September. The latest reading marks the second decline in a row for the index, which reached the highest level in 11 years in December. The February number also fell shy of analyst predictions. They expected the index to hit 68, according to FactSet. ••• Associated Press
