March for Babies - Kauai 2016 Date: Saturday, May 7, 2016

Kauai 2016 Ambassador Family he 2016 Kauai March for Babies Ambassador family is the Shinno family. Stephanie Shinno was expecting her second child – the first boy in mid-May; but Syler had other plans. After arriving at KVMH with contractions, the hospital decided on a C-section and Syler was born on April 6, 2007 at just over 5 lbs. – over a month pre-mature. At first, everything seemed ok, but Syler was diagnosed with sleep apnea which required an emergency flight to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oahu where the only NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit) is located. Syler spent several days in an incubator. While at the hospital, Stephanie recalls, “He was sleeping, and at times we had to rub his belly to remind him to breathe. They (March of Dimes volunteers) taught me how to read his vital signs, gave me free bottles to store breast milk, free diapers, and a pacifier. Agencies, such as the March of Dimes, make it possible for parents like me to receive these necessities so I could focus on our little man.”

Syler celebrated his 9th birthday on April 6. He attends Wilcox Elementary; plays basketball, football at Lihue Boys & Girls Club, dances hip hop at Aloha Dance Studio, and loves playing golf with Mom (Stephanie), his older sister Aaliyah Nero, and his younger brother Lytron Shinno. He is also a Bear Cub Scout with Pack 148. The March of Dimes is a uniquely American story whose effects have been felt all over the world! FDR founded this organization in 1938 to eradicate the disease that crippled him and millions of others…by asking school children to collect and mail in dimes. As incredible as it sounds, the research effort that led to the eradication of polio was funded not with multi-million dollar gifts, but with spare change. In addition to raising the money to fund the research to develop the vaccine we also fielded a volunteer organization to facilitate the vaccination to hundreds of millions of children and adults. Those efforts gave birth to this organization, The March of Dimes. And the result was the fulfillment of our mission: the elimination of polio in the United States.

NICU Family Support

The NICU Family Support program was started 13 years ago and is in more than 120 hospitals across the country. This program provides information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home, and in the event of a newborn death. The program contributes to NICU staff professional development and promotes the philosophy of family-centered care throughout NICUs. Babies in the NICU may have been born too small, too soon, or with a medical condition that requires intensive care. Throughout the NICU experience, parents can be involved in their baby’s care in a variety of important ways. The March of Dimes has developed the NICU Family Support program to help support families during their baby’s time in the NICU. The program also educates NICU staff about the best

ways to support babies, families, and each other. Hospitals with a NICU Family Support program are able to offer their families special materials including keepsake booklets for their baby, a guide for parenting in the NICU, and a NICU glossary and guide. There are special materials for families with babies in the NICU less than 14 days, a common experience that can also be very frightening and stressful. As part of the program, March of Dimes also provides information for extended family members such as grandparents and siblings, and materials just for dads. In addition, families can access March of Dimes NICU resources online from any device with an internet connection.

How March of Dimes helps local families

NICU Family Support also provides ongoing education for hospital staff. This education focuses on best practices in supporting families, and the benefits of appropriate family-centered care for NICU babies at every stage of development. Education for staff is based on evidence based care, to help support staff in their important role. The program is currently implemented in over 120 NICUs across the country including here in Hawaii at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

The Hawaii Chapter supports a part-time NICU Family Support Specialist at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. The program was launched in 2005. Since that time we have: • Distributed more than 5,000 parent care kits to families • Offered more than 325 parent activities/parent education hours • Touched the lives of over 4,000 family members who attended • Activities/education hours including parents, grandparents and siblings • Trained over 60 Kapiolani staff in Family-Centered Care (plus 10 non-Kapiolani staff trainings) • Invested over a half a million dollars in this program In the United States, a baby is born prematurely every minute, and approximately 72 die each day before reaching their first birthday. Worldwide, 15 million babies are born too soon each year. Babies born just a few weeks early are at risk for developmental delays and medical problems.
