We dedicate the 2018 Farm Fair to the

Jeffrey & Bridgette Orsatelli Ohana

he year 2018 marks a special milestone for the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) Hawaii 4-H Program. 100 years ago, in 1918, University of Hawaii Agriculture Research Director, Frederick Krauss, formed the first boys swine club with 31 plantation boys near the town of Haiku on the Island of Maui. This marked the beginning of 4-H in Hawaii. Today, 4-H projects on the island of Kauai continue to teach boys and girls life skills in science, healthy living, citizenship and career readiness with the help of dedicated volunteers, parents and a supportive community. As we celebrate 100 years of 4-H in Hawaii, we are proud to dedicate the 2018 Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair to the Orsatelli 4-H Ohana; the late Jeffrey Orsatelli, his wife Bridgette Orsatelli and their children Chad, Storm, Rayven and Chase. Being a family to reach out and embrace others,

6TH -19 16TH-19TH TH

4-H member Chantal Rusaw has become their hanai daughter and all 4-H club members are considered family to them. Although this dedication comes with great honor and pride, it is also very bittersweet and memories of fairs past will tug at many hearts this year. A month after the Farm Fair ended last year, Bridgette’s husband and soulmate, Jeffrey Orsatelli, fell ill, and with no known cause passed from this life. He was taken from his young family at the age of 52 and many who are here at the fair this year feel such a void without him. Jeff had a rugged appearance, but when it came to the kids and helping others, his heart softened and took it upon himself to make our 4-H Livestock tent a safe place to visit. 4-H members would model his work ethic. He would round up a couple of good friends and take care of hooking up water lines for 4-H animals and a handwashing sink for people, building

a stage for the auctioneer, securing panels for the Petting Zoo and 4-H projects and doing anything needing heavy work and strength. He did all of this and more, just because he knew it had to be done for the success of 4-H and safety of all who visited us at the fair. Bridgette has been a 4-H volunteer for many years but she has not bothered to keep track of exactly when that role began. Her mantra is always “it’s not about the years, it’s about the kids”. She has led the Kauai 4-H Livestock Club as its’ main leader for approximately 10 years, and in that time has sacrificed an extraordinary number of personal hours to advocate for and mentor youth. She is the caring adult in the lives of many 4-H members, and each gets treated equally as if they were her own child. Bridgette lovingly provides a safe experience for youth both physically and emotionally, striving to

have each child reach their highest potential. She believes in the 4-H way of teaching by experiential learning and helps kids learn from their mistakes to make their best, better. She helps youth find themselves, by losing themselves in the service for others. As youth join 4-H, they are given the opportunity to learn, grow and finally give back to younger members as teen leaders. The proof of her success is when 4-H alumni still call her for advice, come back to volunteer and continue to use her as their caring adult as they navigate life’s path. Bridgette and Jeff’s passion for

4-H and agriculture clearly has been passed down to their children. Chad was an active member in 4-H livestock projects until he graduated from 4-H in 2014 and now continues as a volunteer. Storm, Rayven and Chase have raised 4-H market projects this year and are eager to show and auction off their projects. As children of dedicated 4-H volunteers, they also display their pride for agriculture and livestock. As we celebrate 100 years of 4-H, we fondly remember Jeffrey and honor Bridgette and her family. Please join us at 6 pm in the Entertainment Tent to celebrate this amazing 4-H family.

loha! Welcome to the 2018 Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair! Every year, our community looks forward to this joyous event that brings together our families and friends for good food, good fun and good farming. There really is something for everyone at the Farm Fair – including livestock and produce shows, comedy and live music, vendor booths with ‘ono food and local products, and of course carnival rides and games. Since its beginnings, so many of our keiki and families have created long-lasting memories here at the fair. This four-day festival is truly part of our community, and our lives. For this reason, I am so grateful to the many organizations and individuals for their time and dedication to bring this fair to Kaua‘i year after year. I would like to extend a big Mahalo to the members of the Kaua‘i

County Farm Bureau and the many community stakeholders and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the continued success of the fair! In addition, I would like to thank our residents and visitors for supporting this event, which in turn, supports our farmers, ranchers and local businesses as well as non-profit community organizations. By coming together for the Farm Fair, we are contributing, supporting and continuing agriculture on Kaua‘i and enhancing our local economy. Mahalo to you all, for being an integral part of this important effort. I wish you all a wonderful time at the 2018 Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair!
